2 - Establishing Prayer regularly

Surah ‘Al-Baqarah (The Heifer - a young Cow) - 2

BisMIllaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

3b.  And establish worship
3b.  Wa yuqiimuunas-Salaata

Lesson

Yuqiimuuna – (they establish), this word has been derived from ‘iqaamat, which means “to establish”. The aim from ‘Iqaamatis-Salaat is “everyone should establish the prayer with its full terms and restrictions and excite other people to offer prayers regularly.

As-Salaata - Literal meaning of this word is “supplication”. In the terms of Islamic Law Salaat is the name of a particular worship, which is called “Prayer”. This worship is named Salaat because maximum part of this worship comprises of supplication. One, who offers prayer, supplicates in this worship by tongue, with heart as well as other apparent parts of the body also.

After belief in the Unseen, second virtue of the pious people has been described that “they establish the Prayer (worship) regularly.” The prayer is the best source of bowing before God, proclaiming one’s devotion, producing close relationship with Allah Almighty, and managing unity and discipline among the entire people of the nation. Prayer is the most superior worship in all bodily devotions. And it is the best source of declaring about Belief and Oneness of God. An individual has many advantages in it like code of morality, medical and material benefits, as well as it is useful for the entire nation in the social affairs.

The entire Muslims stand in a row behind the spiritual guide (Imam), after being pure and clean, five times a day, turning unto the Square Building of Makkah (Masjidul Haraam). Standing before their Lord, they accept that they are slaves of God Almighty and brothers of one another mutually. By this worship, hearts of all participants, who stand in congregational prayer in a line, become pure from selfishness, envy and impurity. Mutual friendship, love and equality increases into them. The participants of this collective prayer perceive and help in one another’s troubles and distress etc. The mankind stops committing sins and shameless acts.

Passion of obedience of the Commander grows by establishing congregational worship. The nation learns the lesson of punctuality and regularity. So, during the raising days of Islam, main reason of success of the Muslims was establishment of the worship properly. Infamous people, who were not under any sovereignty, became most disciplined nation by establishing prayers and proved themselves a model role of unity for the world.

It has come in the Sayings of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him), “the prayer is the only difference among Muslims and Infidels”. We should observe ourselves in the light of this Hadith that, which society do we belong to? In another Hadith, the Prophet (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) said: The prayer is ascension (Me’-raaj) of the Believer. He will be unlucky, who does not desire to reach such higher dignity.

Prayer is a worship which is useful in all matters like moral and spiritual, individual and collective matters. Therefore, it has been determined “A Pillar of the Religion”.

Attributes of Good people (1) Belief in the Unseen - Quran Chaptr 2-3a (Pt-1 Stg-1)(L–18)-درس قرآن

Attributes of Good people (1) Belief in the Unseen

Surah ‘Al-Baqarah (The Heifer - a young Cow) - 2

BisMIllaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

3a.  Who believe in the Unseen
3a.  ‘Allaziina yu’-minuuna bil-Gaybi

Lesson

‘Allaziina – (Those people, who), according to the rules of grammar, this word is called “Relative Pronoun”. Singular of it is ‘allazii. This word has been used again and again in the Holy Qur-‘aan.

Yu’-minuuna – (they believe, have faith). This word has been derived from ‘Iimaan. ‘Iimaan means Belief, ‘to admit the Truth of anything with tongue, have faith in the heart about it and plan to act according to it. That individual, who believes, comes in peace from all doubts. This is the Belief, which is reliable in the Divine Law of the Religion.

Gaybi – it aims “such World, which is higher than this apparent universe, the news about which, can only be known by means of any Prophet (Peace be upon Him). For example: Nature and Attributes of God Almighty, the Angels (peace be upon Them), the Paradise and the Hell, the Day of Resurrection, the accounts of good manners and the evils (sins), rewards and punishment according to personal acts etc. “The Belief in the Unseen” cannot be perfect without Belief in the Prophet (Peace be upon Him).

It was narrated in the previous lesson that Holy Qur-’aan is Code of Life for those people, who desire to reap advantage from it being extremely sincere and with pure intention, who have ability and excitement to live with care and look after their own. And they have ambition to pass their lives with chastity and cautiously.

First attribute of the pious people has been described in this verse, which will grow into them with the Guidance of Holy Qur-’aan i.e. they believe in such things without looking, existence of which is higher than apparent senses.

Without belief, the heart remains unsatisfied, restless and unstable, because without its existence - doubts, hesitation, whims and suspicions make a room in the hearts. But a believer does not fear in stress and strain, at the time of severe and painful calamity and trial. Moreover, he gets encourage because he believes that he has a big support and strong trust. And he gains happiness of his brain from it, satisfaction of the heart and comfort of his soul. This faith in the World of Unseen is marrow of the Religion and soul of Belief. Without it, the Belief cannot be matured.

We prepared ourselves for obtaining Guidance from Holy Qur-’aan and joined the people, who fear God Almighty. Now we should produce such virtues in ourselves, according to the teachings of Holy Qur’aan, for which, It has guided us. We should believe in all the facts of Unseen without any hesitation, which have been caused to know us by means of the last Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him).

Our Lord! Bestow us power, resources and strength, so that we may ward off evil and become Your real slaves.

Aim of Holy Qur’aan - Quran Chaptr 2-2b (Pt-1 Stg-1)(L–17)-درس قرآن

Aim of Holy Qur’aan

Surah ‘Al-Baqarah (The Heifer - a young Cow) - 2

BisMIllaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

2b.  A guidance unto those who ward off (evil).
2b.  Hudal-lil-Muttaqiin.

Lesson

Hudan – (Guidance), Knowledge of the Path, preparations and provisions for the Journey and ability, strength and power to reach the destination. These all things are included in the meanings of ‘Guidance’. Explanation of this word has passed in the first Chapter “The Opening” (‘Al-Faatihah)

Muttaqiin – This word is Plural of Muttaqii, which has been derived from “Taqwaa”. Muttaqii is the individual who fear God, it aims “the temperate, Abstinent and Sober, who fears God in heart, who lives in abstinence and who performs his duty with care. One incident of Sayyidina Abi bin Ka’b (May Allah be pleased with him) is worth considering for explanation of the word Taqwaa (Piety).

Once, Sayyidina ‘Umar (May Allah be pleased with him) asked from Sayyidina Abi bin Ka’ab (May Allah be pleased with him) about the meanings of Muttaqii (the Pious). He replied, if you pass through a forest which is full of thorns and shrubs, what will you do? He answered, “I shall fold up my clothes, so that the skirt of my garment may not involve with thorns. Sayyidina Abi bin Ka’ab (May Allah be pleased with him) said, “It is Taqwaa”.

Known that the Guidance of Holy Qur-’aan is beneficial for those people who desire to reach their destination keeping themselves safe and sound from every kind of thorns (evils and sins etc.) in the (forest of) life of this world.

Two types of mankind are found. Some of them have indifferent temperament. They are so thoughtless that without meditation, they interrupt in every matter. Some are those who think before starting every work carefully. It is obvious that the people; who live a careful life, they reap advantage of Guidance. These are the people into whom, attribute of piety is found. The Abstinence will reach at the top with the teachings of Holy Qur-’aan and those virtues will be produced in sobers which have been described ahead.

This Noble Scripture, “The Holy Qur-’aan” has been revealed for the guidance of the entire world. And it has been addressing the entire people of the world, but practically, only those persons can reap advantage from this Word who seek and need to know the Truth. Every work needs some basic elements for beginning, for example; feet are necessary for walking, eyes for looking, likewise; for attaining Guidance from Holy Qur-’aan, fear of God is necessary in the hearts i.e. existence of the substance of care is must. The sun shines upon the entire world. But those people, who have lost their power of seeing, for them, its light is useless. If the earth is salty, the rain will prove nothing on it. It is important for keeping the piety in our hearts that we should settle our accounts at our own regularly. Once, Sayyidina Umar (May Allah be pleased with him) said: “Prior to it, that anyone else calls for your account, you must check your account yourself.

Position of Holy Qur’aan - Quran Chaptr 2-2a (Pt-1 Stg-1)(L–16)-درس قرآن

Position of Holy Qur’aan

Surah ‘Al-Baqarah (The Heifer - a young Cow) - 2

BisMIllaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

2a.  This is the Scripture whereof
There is no doubt.
2a.  Zaalikal-  Kitaabu  laa  rayba  fiiH.

Lesson

Zaalika  - (This). This word is used for indicating towards anything. In Arabic language, besides the word Zaalika, some more words have also been used for indicating towards something. Usually Zaalika is used to indicate toward a thing away, but due to dignity and greatness of Holy Qur-’aan, its meaning is used as nearby “here”.

‘Al-Kitaabu - Every written thing is called Kitaab (the Book). Whenever  ‘Al comes before a noun, it becomes a particular noun. So, which ‘Al is used here before Kitaab, it makes the book, “A Particular Book” i.e. Holy Qur-’aan.

Every human being in this world needs to know true principles, so that, after adopting these principles, one may acquire his object. Some people desire to know such principles with their own sense/wisdom. But it is evident from the experience that which principles come out by means of own sense of anyone; cannot be real and certain, because, people have different opinions in different matters. As though, we cannot be unanimous on one principle collectively, but there will be “Many mouths, many tongues”.

To curb this tendency, Lord of the Worlds, God Almighty revealed for us His Holy Word with entire kindness, and commanded also that the verses of this Book are filled with full philosophy, are true and final. There is no doubt in it. Which covenants have been made in it, certainly; those shall be fulfilled. And which teachings have been conveyed by it; doubtless will produce true results. If any individual feels any doubt in any matter, `that can be removed by a little meditation in the verses of Holy Qur-’aan itself.

Teachings of Holy Qur-’aan are not far from the approach of sense and wisdom. Human beings are invited that they should examine the Truth of Holy Qur-’aan practically. Surely, using it, they will feel comfort in every matter. Who does not know that the Arabian nation had been drowned in the darkness of ignorance? She was most backward comparing to all other nations. Maximum people were cruel and uncivilized. When this nation acted upon the teachings of Holy Qur-’aan, she succeeded in all fields of life; like economics, politics, science, arts, social matters, civilization manners etc. Those people who were behind all, they commanded the entire due to acting upon Holy Qur-’aanic teachings. Every Promise of Holy Qur-’aan was fulfilled. But when the people gave up acting upon its commandments, the same old diseases returned in the nation.

We should make a vow, from the beginning wholeheartedly, to act upon these teachings, give up all kinds of doubts and suspicions and acquire success in accordance with the Promises of Allah Almighty in this life and on the Day of Resurrection.

The Letters “Muqatt’aat” - Quran Chaptr 2-1 (Pt-1 Stg-1)(L–15)-درس قرآن

The Letters “Muqatt’aat

Surah ‘Al-Baqarah (The Heifer - a young Cow) - 2

BisMIllaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

1.  Alif. Lam. Mim.
1.  ‘ALIF-LAAAM-MIIIM.

Lesson

Sura ‘Al-Baqarah begins with above three letters. These kinds of letters are called “Huruuf  Muqatta-‘aat”. These letters are written collectively but are recited separately. Above three letters (Alif. Lam. Mim) have come in the beginning of five more Chapters of Holy Qur-‘aan excluding ‘Baqarah’ (The Cow), besides these three letters, some other letters have also been included in the beginning of some different Surahs of the Holy Qur-’aan. The Surahs which begin with these types of letters are twenty nine in numbers.

If we say: What are the meanings of Alif-Laaam-Miiim? Nobody can reply absolutely, because it is a Secret from the Secrets of God. Only Allah Almighty, His Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him), the Companions of the Messenger (may Allah be agreed upon them) and the Scholars of the Muslim nation know its meanings. Different Saints have tried to explain about these letters according to their personal views. For instance:

Sayyidina ibn ‘Abbas (may God Almighty be pleased with him) narrated that aim from ‘ALIF-LAAAM-MIIIM is ‘AnAllaahu ‘A’-lamu (God says), “I am Allah, Who knows the best.” One saint said, “Alif means Allah (God), who revealed the Holy Word. Laaam means the arch Angel Gabriel (peace be upon Him), who used to bring down the revelation of Allah, and Miiim means The Prophet Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) upon whom, this Holy Scripture ‘Qur’aan’ has been revealed by means of the Angel Gabriel (peace be upon Him).

A young Egyptian Scholar, named Sayyad Nasooh Zahir told after counting and having trust in the alphabetical letters that actually number of verses of the Surahs can be found in these letters. Another research scholar said historically that there are historical events with days and years discussed in these letters, which are held in that particular Surah.

In brief, the knowledge of these letters was found by the saints, research scholars and philosophers and they told us. These kinds of letters were already in use in the Arabic language before Islam. To them, every individual who has knowledge of Arabic language, knows perfectly. Besides the Arabic, this custom of use exists in other languages like English, Persian, and Urdu etc. also, for example: the names of exams BA, MA, LLB, the names of organizations i.e. UNO, SPS, IMF etc. These instances are very famous but even till some people don’t know them. Only those persons know them, who have any concern or interest with them.

God Almighty has given us chance to learn and understand the Holy Qur’an. It is our duty that we must try to understand the Word of God entirely, act upon its Instructions and spread its science, deeds and arts nearby and far. Solution of all the disasters of the world over may be found in this Scripture. And our own success depends on it.

Introduction – Surah ‘Al-Baqarah - Quran Chaptr 2-Intro (Pt-1 Stg-1)(L–13 & 14)-درس قرآن

Quran Chaptr 2-Intro (Pt-1 Stg-1)(L–13)-درس قرآن
Introduction – Surah ‘Al-Baqarah (the Cow)

BisMIllaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

Suratul-Baqarah is the second Chapter of Holy Qur-‘aan. It was revealed in Madinah. This Surah is the longest Chapter of Holy Qur-’aan. It contains 286 verses and 40 sections. Baqarah means “the Cow”. It has been named, ‘Al-Baqarah because an event in respect of ‘A Cow’ has been described in it.

The most important teachings regarding beliefs and deeds have been included in it. It is stated that Umar (Radi Allaahu ‘Anhu), Companion of Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him), took many years to understand this Surah. It does not mean “learning by heart”, but “learning and understanding the Commandments and Instructions mentioned in it”. An abstract of its subjects has been explained as under:

1.   At first, it has been described in this Chapter that Holy Qur-’aan is Guidance for those people who fear Allah Almighty and there is a foundation of abstinence in their hearts.

2.  After hearing the Commandments mentioned in Holy Qur’aan, three kinds of people will grow as it happens in the world in relation to every new movement. First, the Believers, who will have full faith in it. Second, the Infidels, who will oppose it and the third, such Hypocrites, who will show themselves as believers but actually their hearts will deny it.

3.  After that, the first commandment for the entire people is that they should worship Allah only, and the Truth of Holy Qur-’aan has been proved.

4.  In the fourth section, Birth of Adam (peace be upon Him) his entitlement as a vicegerent on the earth has been mentioned. Then, from fifth section to onward, recitation in respect of a big dynasty’s life “The Children of Israel” begins. Hundreds of Prophets and Messengers (peace be upon Them) were born in this dynasty. Allah Almighty narrated the circumstances of this dynasty “as a lesson to be taken” and it was also described that this nation did not remain capable of God’s viceroy due to its evil deeds and wickedness.

5.  From section 5 to 15, many incidents of the history of the Children of Israel have been stated; for example, their covenants and agreements, splendor of God on the Mount Sinai, the incident of the Day of Saturday (Sabbath), the event of The Cow, circumstances of slaying the Prophets (peace be upon Them), impure efforts of enchantment, charm and magic, unfair conduct of disgracing the Prophets (peace be upon Them), false faiths about forgiveness and deliverance on the Day of Judgment etc.

6.  With effect from the section-16 onward, more events and incidents in respect of the Children of Israel, birth of The Last Prophet and Messenger Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) in Arab from the generation of Adam (peace be upon Him) have been explained. Moreover, there is also recitation on The Square Building of Makkah (Masjid ul Haraam). And the higher grades in respect of the Martyrs in the Way of Allah have been explained here.

7.  In section-20, the Signs of the Power of God Almighty have been discussed along with the matters relating to the Forbidden and Lawful things.

Quran Chaptr 2-Intro (Pt-1 Stg-1)(L–14)-درس قرآن
Summary

In the twentieth Section of Surah ‘Al-Baqarah, it is commanded that what the actual Goodness is. After this section, up to the section # 26, the matters relating to inheritance, revenge, supplication, fasting, pilgrimage to MakkahJehad (to try and strive), sacrifice of wealth in the Way of God have been described including orders and instructions for them.

With effect from section 27, the matters of family and social life have begun, i.e. marriage, divorce, menstruation, Iddat, second marriage, bringing up and looking after the children and Haqq mahr (the money or its value incumbent on the husband) etc.

In section 32, again the matter of Jehad has been discussed. And in the example, war of Saul (peace be upon Him) against Goliath has been described. God Almighty commanded: Victory or defeat does not depend; either on war equipment or decrease and increase of the manpower. Usually small Armies overcome large Armies.

In 34th Section, there is ‘Aayat ul Kursii, in which many Attributes of Allah Almighty like; the Living, the Eternal etc. have been mentioned. And that there is no compulsion for anyone to accept Islam because its excellence, signs and proofs are obvious.

After that some instructive events in respect of Prophet Abraham (peace be upon Him) have been discussed here. Up to the section-39, commandments about Alms-giving and charity, abstinence, prohibition from usury and interest, laws and instructions regarding evidence and some principles of trade have been explained.

At the end of this Surah in section-40, summary of Belief and Islam have been described including a perfect supplication. Last words of this supplication are, “Fan-sur-naa-‘alal-Qawmil-kaafiriin” (So give us victory over the disbelieving folk). It is the result of the invitation by Holy Qur-’aan, as though, which nation will grow with the teachings of Holy Qur’aan, by means of such nation, the Law of God will overcome on the infidelity. Consequence of the Believers of God Almighty and infidels has been narrated here that the believers will succeed, whereas the infidels will fail and subdued, as the end of the Surah is; just like its beginning.

It should not be forgotten that this abstract is only to show a concept of its subjects. Otherwise, it is impossible for anyone, to summarize the facts and excellence of the Speech of God in a few words.

We should think and care for the Commandments and Instructions of God Almighty, mentioned in this Surah. We should understand its philosophy and grip up our loins to act upon its instructions. Our Lord! Give us knowledge and power for it.
