Help from patience and prayer

Surah ‘Al-‘Baqarah (The Cow) – Chapter – 2)

BisMIllaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

45.  And seek help in patience and prayer. And truly it is hard save for the humble-minded—
45. Wasta-‘iinuu bis-Sabri was-Salaah. Wa ‘innahaa lakabii-ratun ‘illaa ‘alal- Khaashi-iin.

Commentary

‘Ista-‘iinuu – (seek help). This word has been derived from ‘awn, which means “help and support”. Origin of this word is ‘ista-‘aanat, which means “to seek help”. When anyone feels a work difficult, he needs help of any other person/thing. In such situation, whoever requests for help, he is called musta-‘iin, and who helps the needy, is called – Mu-‘iin. More words from it are musta-‘iin, which is from ‘ista-‘aanat (begging for help), and ‘a-‘aanat from mu-‘iin (helping someone).

‘As-Sabru – (power of endurance, and tolerance), it is needed every time. Whenever any good work is being performed, doing it wholeheartedly is also patience; and whenever someone has to suffer from any calamity, bearing it without confusion is tolerance too. During working hard, the patience is necessary also. To keep the wishes pressed needs patience too. In short, the patience is required every time and if we behold; it is the foundation of every good virtue.

God Almighty bestowed the human being two things, soul and body, and these both are very great blessings. Duty of the soul is to acquire knowledge, to devise and to take the work from the body. And it is the duty of the body that it should move in accord with the intention of the soul. The prayer is a means of gratitude for these spiritual and bodily blessings. Recognizing God Almighty is the thanks of the knowledge. The gratitude of the blessings of standing position is that someone should pray God Almighty in straight standing position, then bow and remember Him in such position and then fall prostrate and remember Allah in such position; that due to His blessings hands from elbows, legs from knees, hands and feet from wrists and ankles can be bent. This is the great blessings; otherwise if any joint becomes stiff, then it would have a severe thrashing. Then the person should sit down and think that how is it a great blessing? Remember the blessing of turning the neck at the time of saying “‘As-salaamu ‘Alaykum  wa RahmatUllaah” to the right and then to the left.  At last someone should thank God with tongue also adopting every position of the body with intention. It is called a prayer.

'Al- Khaashi-iin – (humble-minded people); this word has been derived from khushuu’, which means “to disclose ones humility” and it is the biggest worship by the heart, the individuals who suppose themselves weak and feeble without help of God, they are called ‘al-Khaashi-iin. It is the great worship of the heart to assert his humility during standing position, bowing position, falling prostrate position and in sitting position before God Almighty, because in the prostrate position, all limbs of the body are bent which is a sign of capability to work and health of the body. So the prostration is the best form for declaration of the gratitude and conception of helplessness. We should think that if the body parts do not turn and move then the human being is helpless and crippled. From it, those people should learn who deem that the prayer is useless.

Enjoining for righteousness - Quran Chptr 2-44 (Pt-1,Stg-1)(L-75) -درس قرآن

Quran Chptr 2-44 (Pt-1,Stg-1)(L-75) -درس قرآن

Enjoining for righteousness

Surah ‘Al-‘Baqarah (The Cow) – Chapter – 2)

BisMIllaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

44.  Enjoin ye righteousness upon mankind while ye yourselves forget (to practice it)? And ye are readers of the Scripture! Have ye then no sense?
44.  ‘Ata’-muruunan-naasa bil-birri  wa  tansawna ‘anfusakum  wa  ‘antum  tatluunal-Kitaab. ‘Afalaa  ta’-qiluun.

Commentary

‘Al-birri – meanings of this word are goodness and favor. Politeness, worship with full sincerity, good manners and kindness; all these things are included in it. Opposite to this word are errors, evils and sins.

Al-Kitaab – here ‘al-Kitaab means “Torah”, in which all commandments for the Jews regarding good deeds, adorations and religious matters were narrated.

Whenever the days for destruction of any nation come, then among them, greedy for wealth, easygoing scholars and leaders grow, who apparently; preach the people every time to correct their habits, sympathize with other people with truth and faith at the time of negotiation, not to tell a lie, not to deceive any person, offer prayers, keep fasting and serve the people. But the preachers do not act upon their preaching themselves. Except comfort and pleasure of this world, they have no concern with anything. They wish only the influence of their preaching over others, so that they may get maximum rewards, tributes and offering at the name of alms; so that they may get maximum chances to be addicted to pleasure.

This badness had been grown in the scholars of the Children of Israel. They were seekers only of worldly wealth and property, respect and celebrity. If they had intention to make the people good-natured by their influence, then it would be certainly praise-worthy, but making others good without it that they should make good at first themselves, cannot be so. And from it they were at a great distance.

In this verse, the scholars are being ashamed in these words, “what are you going to do this? You guide the people to be good and pious with your tongues every time, whereas personally you are far away from the Truth. Do you desire only that the people should accept you their leader and spiritual guide; and serve you always? Alas! You read Torah and still you are convinced of showiness and indolent from correction of yourselves. It is the first demand of the wisdom that a person should show himself as example for others in the truth. Against the facts, you are criminals of deceiving the people. If you are sincere in advising the people, at first, you should act also yourselves according to your sayings.”

It could not be proved more useful to admonish and frighten the Jews; however, there is a hidden advice for the scholars; who believe that Holy Qur’aan is a true Book, i.e. “They should arrange to correct themselves before correcting others, because becoming a hypocrite, treacherous, in-sincere and cheat is forerunner of destruction and ruin of the nation.

Establishment of Worship - Quran Chptr 2-43 (Pt-1,Stg-1)(L-74) -درس قرآن

Quran Chptr 2-43 (Pt-1,Stg-1)(L-74) -درس قرآن

Establishment of Worship

Surah ‘Al-‘Baqarah (The Cow) – Chapter – 2)

BisMIllaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

43.  And establish worship and pay the poor-due, and bow your heads with those who bow (in worship).
43.  Wa  ‘aqiimus-Salaata wa   ‘aatuz-Zakaata  warka-‘uu  ma-‘ar-raaki-‘iin.

Commentary

‘Az-Zakaata – (the poor-due), zakaat means “to increase”. Like this zakaatuz-zara’ means “husbandry increased”. By expending wealth on lawful works and paying to the deserving people for the cause of Allah Almighty, it increases. Therefore, after passing away a year, giving a prescribed portion of the wealth in the name of God Almighty, is called Zakaat. Other meanings of it are chastity, purity and cleanliness. Really after paying Zakaat (the Poor-due), the property becomes pure. Salaat (prayer) and Zakaat are two such duties, which remained part of worship always in every religion; however, difference remained among their forms and propositions.

‘Arka-‘uu – (Bow), this word has come out from Rakuu’, which means “to lean, to bow”. As it is a part of the Prayer, so it is also used usually for the whole prayer. Sometimes, the word ‘Asjuduu (fall prostrate) has come along with it too.

God Almighty commanded the Jews to correct at first their faith and belief at the time of inviting them unto Islam, and that they should produce the real teachings of God before the people in its original form, and not to mix up (neither reduce nor increase) anything with it at their own.

Now they are being taught for actions. So, it is commanded that they should form a habit themselves for offering prayers, perform this duty punctually and regularly. The prayer is the most superior form of worship from entire other bodily worships and the best way of recognizing God Almighty and pleasing to Him.

After the prayer, they are being instructed that they should pay Zakaat (the poor-due) in accordance with the rules every year from their wealth. They should pay a prescribed part of their wealth (2.5%) every year to the poor, meek, deserving and needy people for the sake of God Almighty. They should expend the wealth given by Allah Almighty on useful public works of welfare.

The Jews were very rich because maximum people of them were merchants and artificers, so it was dangerous for them that boundless love for wealth might be born in their hearts. Its remedy is attainable with offering prayers and giving Alms and poor-dues to the poor and needy people with sympathy and knowledge about their necessities. Therefore, they were commanded that they should offer congregational prayers in the Masjid with those who offer prayers and bow when they bow, and pay the poor-due to the deserving persons. This congregation and unity has many advantages.

Hiding the Truth is forbidden - Quran Chptr 2-42 (Pt-1,Stg-1)(L-73) -درس قرآن

Quran Chptr 2-42 (Pt-1,Stg-1)(L-73) -درس قرآن

Hiding the Truth is forbidden

Surah ‘Al-‘Baqarah (The Cow) – Chapter – 2)

BisMIllaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

42.  And confound not truth with falsehood, and do not conceal the truth knowingly.
42.  Wa laa talbisul-Haqqa bil-baatili  wa taktumul-Haqqa  wa ‘antum  ta’-lamuun.

Commentary

Laa talbisuu – (do not confound). This word has been derived from labasa, which means “to mix up a thing with any other, so that, it may become difficult to distinguish among them i.e. to expose the false as true or to coat the lie as such that it appears like really true.

Taktumuu – (do not conceal). This word has come out from the word katama. Meaning of katama is to conceal. There are two ways to change the Commands of God Almighty, which are as under:

•        Changing the meaning or the word itself.

•        Concealing the truth.

The Children of Israel used both methods to change the foretelling about the teachings of the Heavenly Scriptures and the last Messenger, Muhammad (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam). Due to destruction of Torah, some commandments of God Almighty had been disappeared or lost, then which commands remained in existence, those were changed by these people for the sake of their own convenience for time being.

At the time of ascension of Islam, the scholars from the Children of Israel had ruined the remaining form of their religion. They used to change the commandments of those Celestial Scriptures according to their wishes. Which Scriptures had been lost; they had produced self written books with the names of those Heavenly Books. Often, after writing paraphrase and explanation, these were mixed up with the original text and they did not use to mark any difference between the two. The scholar, priest or monk, who had the Heavenly Commandments, he used to reduce or increase it for the sake of any worldly temptation or earnings greed.

The entire signs and foretelling regarding the birth and prophet-hood of the last Messenger, Muhammad (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) did exist in their Holy Books. But when He (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) was born, they began to hide these all signs due to burning in the fire of their jealousy and began to narrate from some of them by perverting. So, God Almighty commanded, “Confound not truth with falsehood, and do not conceal the truth knowingly. Due to your depravity, other people go astray also.”

Purpose of discussion regarding important incidents of the history in respect of the Children of Israel, which Holy Qur’an describes, is that the Jews might be informed about their evils on one side, and on the other hand, the Muslims should be caused to understand properly that there is no scope in the religion for these kinds of misguidance. So, we should meditate in these events, which our Lord, Allah Almighty has revealed for us in the Holy Qur’aan, and the rising and wretchedness of the Children of Israel. We should not cause to grow the badness and evils in ourselves like this.

Revelations of God - insignificance by the Jews - Quran Chptr 2-41b (Pt-1,Stg-1)(L-72) -درس قرآن

Quran Chptr 2-41b (Pt-1,Stg-1)(L-72) -درس قرآن

Revelations of God - insignificance by the Jews

Surah ‘Al-‘Baqarah (The Cow) – Chapter – 2)

BisMIllaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

41b.  and part not with My Revelations for a trifling price, and keep your duty unto Me.
41b.  Wa  laa tash-taruu  bi-‘AayaaTii samanan  qaliilaa;  wa ‘iyyaaya  fattaquun.

Commentary

Samanan qaliilaa- (a trifling price), it means that you should not become desirous of wealth; giving up the Right. The world is a contemptible and undervalued thing comparing to the Right and the Truth, whether it seems apparently very great thing because it is temporary and frail.

Wa ‘iyyaaya fattaquun – (and keep your duty unto Me). Ittiqaa means “to save oneself from the badness (evils)”. Here it aims “the fear of God’s wrath should be cause of avoiding the badness”, as though, the individual, who has fear of Allah in his heart, can save himself from the act of badness”.

Which soft behavior has been adopted by Holy Qur’aan with the Jews and fairly invited them towards Islam; that is also a proof about Holy Qur’aan that it is the Word of God Almighty. The ways of disclosing the events and method of addressing; shows full respect of the Jews. Nothing is narrated like that, which may provoke them. It is the miracle of Holy Qur’aan which created proper environment for declaration of the Truth. If we, the Muslims follow at least some of it, then the entire fears of the world would be finished.

The behavior; which the Jews adopted with Islam, its foundation seems nothing but stubbornness and misunderstanding. The aim from selling the Revelations of God is that “the Jewish Scholars used to change the Commands of God (Torah) for casual benefits of this world, issued self invented religious decrees for some money, and hid the Orders of God and committed them inter-mixed for hiding their own badness. Whenever scholars of any nation indulge in these types of defects, then it is difficult for that nation to save itself from the destruction.

In this lesson, Allah Almighty caused much to understand about the good conduct. The Life in this world and its benefits are for a few days. Due to this reason, He admonishes to the Jews that they should not take decisions by changing His Orders for the sake of contemptible rewards, because the reward of telling correctly about My Commandments is better for the both worlds (this life and on the Day of Resurrection) than these casual advantages and some compensations.

Quran invites all - Quran Chptr 2-41a (Pt-1,Stg-1)(L-71) -درس قرآن

Quran Chptr 2-41a (Pt-1,Stg-1)(L-71) -درس قرآن

Quran invites all

Surah ‘Al-‘Baqarah (The Cow) – Chapter – 2)

BisMIllaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

41a.  And believe in that which I have revealed, confirming that which ye possess already (of the Scripture), and be not first to disbelieve therein,
41a.  Wa  ‘aaminuu  bimaaa  ‘an-zaltu  musaddiqal-limaa  ma-‘a-kum  wa  laa  takuunuuu ‘aw-wala  kaafirim-bih.

Commentary

Maaa ‘an-zaltu – (which I have revealed), it signifies toward Holy Qur’aan, which was revealed on the last Prophet (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam). This is the Last Holy Word of God Almighty.

Maa  ma-‘a-kum – (which you have), it aims the Holy Scripture Torah, which was revealed on the Prophet Moses (Peace be upon Him). Its truth and religious rules are approved by Holy Qur’aan.

The Children of Israel are the people, who have been invited first of all to believe in Holy Qur’aan. These people were the most famous out of the Believers of Heavenly Scripture. They used to live in the vicinity of Madinah. This principle was also in accord with such rule that goodness and its invitation should be begun from the relatives and neighbors first. In the previous verse, Allah Almighty reminded them His rewards and blessings upon them and commanded that they should fulfill their covenant, which they had made with Him.

The covenant which is being asked to be fulfilled is, believing in this Scripture “Holy Qur’aan”, which has been revealed on the Last Messenger, Muhammad (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam). So they should believe in It and act upon Its Instructions. This Scripture, “Holy Qur’aan” authenticates the Principles of their Holy Scripture also.

After this, it is being admonished that: lest you might be the first disbelievers of the Holy Qur’aan from the people, who know the Religion of God Almighty. As much knowledge regarding acquaintance of the last Prophet Muhammad (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) and the Truth of Holy Qur’aan you have, no other nation has so much. Therefore, it is expected from you that you will not become an example of infidelity and refusal for others. But as you are being invited first out of the learned men (the persons who believe in one of the four inspired Books of God), you will become cause of temptation for others by believing in it first, that they admit and believe in it observing you. You should never be afraid that if you will believe in this last Holy Word and last Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam), you will lose your worldly dignity, influence and impression. But contrary to it, you will see that all badness will perish due to blessings of Islam. This world will become comfortable for you and in the next life, on the Day of Resurrection; you will be avoided from punishment.

Allah favored the Jews - Quran Chptr 2-40b (Pt-1,Stg-1)(L-70) -درس قرآن

Quran Chptr 2-40b (Pt-1,Stg-1)(L-70) -درس قرآن

Allah favored the Jews

Surah ‘Al-‘Baqarah (The Cow) – Chapter – 2)

BisMIllaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

40b.  remember  My favour wherewith I favoured you, and fulfill your (part of the) covenant, I shall fulfill My (part of the) covenant, and fear Me.
40b.  ‘Az-kuruu  ni’-matiallatiii   ‘an-‘amTu-‘alaykum  wa    ‘awfuu  ‘bi-‘AhDiii  ‘Uufi   bi-‘Ahdikum. Wa  ‘iyyaa-ya  farhabuun.

Commentary

Baniii-‘Israaa-‘Iil  – (the Children of Israel), Israel was the surname of Prophet Jacob (Peace be upon Him), who was son of Prophet Isaac (Peace be upon Him) and grandson of Prophet Abraham (Peace be upon Him). This word is of Hebrew language. And it means “the servant of God. These people are also called “the Jews”.

Ni’-matii - (My favor), it aims those favors and blessings of Allah Almighty, which He had bestowed on the Jews, for example; He caused to set them free from the torment of the slavery, drowned their enemy pharaoh, made their way to cross the red sea, provided them food in the desert like “Mann-o- Salwaa” the delicious food without any hard work and labor, and helped them Unseen in calamities etc.

‘Ahdiii  - My (part of the) covenant.  Covenant is a promise between two parties. Here covenant means the promise which servants (Human beings) made with their Creator (Allah) before coming in this world. As, Allah Almighty bestowed wisdom and sense to humankind, granted power to consider about Signs of His Omnipotence and then the human beings accepted responsibility that they will recognize their Creator, will believe in the Prophets (Peace be upon them) sent by God Almighty and will follow the Guidance of Allah Almighty. In return, Allah Almighty promised that the believers will be sent to the Paradise.

Farhabuun – {you should (fear Me,) observe your duty} it means that you should not fear any other than Allah Almighty.

Allah Almighty promised with Adam (Peace be upon Him) after his birth and sending him on earth that He will send his Prophets (Peace be upon them) for his children according to the occasions and will convey His own Guidance and Instructions by means of Them (Peace be upon them) to His servants. Prophets (peace be upon them) came according to this covenant. Messenger Muhammad (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) was sent as the last Messenger of all. The religion, which was bestowed to Him, is a universal religion. So, the series of the teachings of the Religion - Islam begins from this Section.

The Jews were aware of the religion of God Almighty, therefore they are being addressed particularly first of all. And they are being reminded that: your ancestors have seen the blessings of God’s religion and you know about it very well. Now you should believe in this last Prophet (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam), so that you may deserve the same blessings again. If you will do so, then it will be considered that you have fulfilled your covenant and in return, Allah will fulfill His covenant: Your sins will be forgiven and you will be bestowed with success in this world and on the Day of Resurrection.
