Surah ‘Al-Baqarah (The Cow) – Chapter – 2)

BisMillaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَقُولُوا۟ رَٰعِنَا وَقُولُوا۟ ٱنظُرْنَا وَٱسْمَعُوا۟ وَلِلْكَٰفِرِينَ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ (104

104.  O ye who believe, say not (unto the Prophet): “Listen to us” but say “Look upon us”, and be ye listeners. And for disbelievers is a painful doom.

104.  Yaaa-‘ayyu-hallaziina  ‘aa-manuu  laa taquuluu  raa-‘inaa  wa quulunzurnaa  was-ma-‘uu.  Wa lil-Kaafiriina ‘azaabun  ‘aliim.

Commentary

Raa-‘inaa – (Listen to us, show us favor)

‘Unzurnaa – (Look upon us), this word has the same meanings also, “Listen to us, show us favor”. The Children of Israel used to exist in the Conference of the Messenger of God Almighty Muhammad (glory, grace, peace and blessings be upon Him), and listen to the Advice and preaching. Whenever they could not hear any word and wished to ask again, then they used to say raa-‘ina.

Hearing the word raa-‘ina from them, some times the Muslims began to use this word too. God Almighty prevented them that they should not use this word. If they wish to say so, they should use the word “’unzurnaa”. In fact, the Children of Israel used to say this word raa-‘inaa due to ill-will and joke. They intentionally used to say as ra-‘iinaa, which means ‘our shepherd’ and in the Jewish language, the word raa-‘inaa is used for the words “fool, blockhead, most foolish, stupid and idiot” also.

Allah Almighty forbade the Muslims from using this word (raa-‘inaa) and commanded to replace it as ‘unzurnaa, which means “Look upon us”. The aspect of joke or censure is not found in this word. Along with the use of this word, it has been ordered also: “be ye listeners” (was-ma-‘uu), so that you would not have to ask again for repetition.

It is learnt from the command of ‘as-ma-‘uu too that the Sayings, Advice and preaching by the Prophet of God Almighty Muhammad (glory, grace, peace and blessings be upon Him) should be heard with full attention. So the individuals, who consider that only the Holy Qur’an is sufficient for guidance of the human beings, they should learn from this decision of Holy Qur’an themselves and imagine that how much it has been pressed to hear and accept the Sayings, advice and preaching according to this verse and many other verses. It has been mentioned also in another verse that the decision of the Messenger of Allah (glory, grace, peace and blessings be upon Him) is the last and final decision for you in every matter. (Suratun-Nissa): O ye who believe! Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger and those of you who are in authority; then if ye have a dispute concerning any matter, refer it to Allah and the Messenger if ye are (in truth) believers in Allah and the Last Day. That is better and more seemly in the end”. (IV : 59)

At the end, God Almighty commands that those people, who have been prepared to deride the Messenger Muhammad (glory, grace, peace and blessings be upon Him) by calling Him with wicked words and making fun of Him, are the disbelievers and for disbelievers is a painful doom.

وَمَا هُم بِضَآرِّينَ بِهِۦ مِنْ أَحَدٍ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِ ٱللَّهِ وَيَتَعَلَّمُونَ مَا يَضُرُّهُمْ وَلَا يَنفَعُهُمْ وَلَقَدْ عَلِمُوا۟ لَمَنِ ٱشْتَرَىٰهُ مَا لَهُۥ فِىٱلْءَاخِرَةِ مِنْ خَلَٰقٍ وَلَبِئْسَ مَا شَرَوْا۟ بِهِۦٓ أَنفُسَهُمْ لَوْ كَانُوا۟ يَعْلَمُونَ (102)  وَلَوْ أَنَّهُمْ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَٱتَّقَوْا۟ لَمَثُوبَةٌ مِّنْ عِندِ ٱللَّهِ خَيْرٌ لَّوْ كَانُوا۟يَعْلَمُونَ (103)

102d.  But they injure thereby no-one save by Allah’s leave. And they learn that which harmeth them and profiteth them not. And surely they do know that he who trafficketh therein will have no (happy) portion in the Hereafter; and surely evil is the price for which they sell their souls, if they but knew.  103.  And if they had believed and kept away from evil, a recompense from Allah would certainly have been better, if they had only known.

102d.  Wa maa hum- bi-zaaar-riina bihii min ‘ahadin ‘illaa bi-‘izNillaah. Wa yata-‘alla-muuna maa yazurruhum wa laa yanfa-‘uhum. Wa laqad  ‘alimuu lama-nish-taraahu maa lahuu  fil ‘Aakhirati min kha-laaq. Wa labi’-sa maa sharaw bihiii ‘anfusa-hum. Law kaanuu ya’-lamuun. 103.  Wa law ‘annahum ‘aamanuu wattaqaw  lama-suubatum-min ‘inDillaahi khayr. Law kaa-nuu ya’-lamuun.

Commentary

In this part of the verse, Allah Almighty has disclosed the reality of incantations and described its consequence also. Although they used to practise incantations for harming others but Allah Almighty says that without His Command; they cannot harm anyone. Moreover they will harm themselves from it. They have been going to mar their own future by doing these evil acts. It is possible that they may get some temporary worldly benefits but at the end (on the Day of Resurrection) they will have no favor.

Allah Almighty says that these people have sacrificed themselves and the advantages of the Day of Resurrection in exchange to worldly ordinary advantages. That is much harmful for them. If they would have adopted the Right Path instead of this way, believed in Allah and had fear of His punishment, Allah Almighty would have given them certainly a better reward.

وَمَا يُعَلِّمَانِ مِنْ أَحَدٍ حَتَّىٰ يَقُولَآ إِنَّمَا نَحْنُ فِتْنَةٌ فَلَا تَكْفُرْ فَيَتَعَلَّمُونَ مِنْهُمَا مَا يُفَرِّقُونَ بِهِۦ بَيْنَٱلْمَرْءِ وَزَوْجِهِۦ

102c.  Nor did they (the two angels) teach it to anyone till they had said: We are only a temptation, therefore disbelieve not (in the guidance of Allah). And from these two (angels) people learn that by which they cause division between man and his wife;

102c.  Wa maa yu-‘alli-maani min ‘ahadin hattaa ya-quulaaa ‘innamaa nahnu fitna-tun, falaa takfur.  Fayata-‘alla-muuna minhumaa maa yufar-riquuna bihii baynal-mar-‘i wa zawjih.

Commentary

 Yu-‘alli-maani - (they both taught) this word is from Ta’-liim. It means “to teach”. But here this word isn’t used in these meanings that the angels used to teach magic to the people. Moreover the meanings of Ta’-liim are “to inform, to show and to tell” here.

Fitna-tun-(disorder, badness, quarrel, test, examination, temptation) Here it is used in the meanings of test & examination only.

Some quarrelsome persons of Babel used to come unto the Angels and say, “you prevent us from black magic and witchcraft but let we know about the magic. Which are the acts of magic due to which, using them is infidelity? After replying them, when the angels used to tell them about magic, its actions and words, then those evil-doers used to hear carefully and use it as an art.

Allah Almighty commands also about this mischief of the Jews that those people used to exercise the particular branch of magic with the help of which, they might produce quarrel and misunderstanding among husband and wife, whereas, it is the worst kind of evil-doing. Creating misunderstanding between the two hearts and specially creating quarrel between husband and wife is the worst act.

Warning of Harut and Marut was to be enough that they used to tell themselves a test, and prevent the Jews from infidelity and evil. But they didn’t learn the lesson. They didn’t listen to their advice but continued committing insurrection and evil-deeds.

102b.  and that which was revealed to the two angels in Babel, Harut and Marut.

102b.  wa maaa ‘unzila  ‘alal-malakayni  bi-Baabila Haaruuta  wa  Maaruut.

Commentary

 ‘Al-malakayni -  (two Angels) God Almighty sent two Angels in Babel to prevent the people from using the magic and witchcraft. Their names were Harut and Marut. These Angels had to live among the human beings. So their faces, bodies, colors, habits and emotions were like the humankind.

Baabil – (Babel), it is old name of Iraq Arab. Name of the Capital of that country was Babel also. This city was 60 Miles away from present city Baghdad towards south on the river bank of Frat. It was a big, developed and most fortunate city. Its agricultural area was irrigated by two famous rivers (Dajla and Frat). This country was famous; particularly; due to magic, black magic, witchcraft and other infernal practices also.

The Jews used to follow the knowledge of magic, which was in use of the wicked and miscreant people during the time of Prophet Solomon (peace be upon him). Secondly, they used to follow also that knowledge which was given to two Angels (Harut and Marut) in the Babel country. This knowledge was given to those Angels only for the purpose that they should correct the conditions of the people and cause to know them about bad effects of this knowledge, but the Jews used to learn and teach it for reaping evil advantages. 

‘As-sihr – (magic), ‘as-sihr is also used for deception in Arabic language. It means that a thing with which the vision of the human being may be deceived. In it, reality differs from the evident. Among magic and Miracle, there is a great difference besides other things, that in the miracle, the condition is changed, but with the magic, the reality does not change. Only the vision is deceived. The Jews used to learn and teach this knowledge for obtaining worldly bad advantages.

According to the Islamic Law, the magic is unlawful. Reason is clear that the Magicians use the sentences of infidelity, adopt unlawful methods and bring the magic in use for good and bad acts. How a Prophet and Angel of Allah Almighty (peace be upon Them) can do the works like this?

102a.  And they followed that which the devils falsely related during the kingdom of Solomon. Solomon disbelieved not; but the devils disbelieved, teaching mankind magic

102a.  Wattaba-‘uu maa  tatlush-shayaa-tiinu ‘alaa mulki- Sulay-maan. Wa maa kafara Sulay-maanu wa laakinnash-shayaa-tii-na kafaruu  yu-‘allimuunan-naa-sas-sihr,

Commentary

Ash-shayaa-tiinu – (plural of Satan), those demons are also meant from this word who were subordinates of the Prophet Solomon (peace be upon Him) besides the Devil, and they were violent and of evil spirit. The demons have been born from the fire. They have wisdom and decency. This creature cannot be seen by the human beings.

Some commentators have indicated about the word ‘ash-shayaa-tiin as the individuals of bad nature and addle-mannered who used to take part in the rebellion against Prophet Solomon (peace be upon Him) and accused Him falsely of various sorts. These devils were very skillful in magic.  

Sulay-maan – (Solomon), He was a very famous Prophet (peace be upon Him) out of the Children of Israel, and He was a very powerful King of His time. Besides Syria and Palestine, limitations of His Government had been spread up to Iraq in the east and up to Egypt in the West. His kingdom was of a great splendor and magnificent.

In this verse, God Almighty has signified towards another intolerant act of the Children of Israel that these people follow the magic, black magic and witchcraft, instead of admitting the true Revelations of Allah Almighty. These magic and witchcrafts are such deeds, which the devils had spread during the times of Prophet Solomon (peace be upon Him). Those witchcrafts contained infidel words, were acquired unlawfully and used for evil purposes. 

These people used to practice the acts of magic and infidelity themselves but betrothed towards the Prophet Solomon (peace be upon Him). They blamed Him that He teaches the magic. But God Almighty has proclaimed about Prophet Solomon by means of Holy Qur’an that He was free from these kinds of wicked deeds, and told that these people are telling a lie entirely.

101.  And when there cometh unto them a Messenger from Allah, confirming that which they possess, a party of those who have received the scripture fling the scripture of Allah behind their backs as if they knew not.

101.  Wa lammaa jaaa-‘a hum Rasuulum-min ‘inDIllaahi mu-saddiqul-limaa ma-‘ahum nabaza fariiqum-minal-lazii-na  ‘uutul-kitaaba, kitaa-bAllaahi waraaa-‘a  zuhuuri-him  ka-‘an-nahum laa ya’-lamuun.

Commentary

Rasuulun – (Messenger), the person carrying the message. This word is used for all Prophets (peace be upon Them). It is revealed from the way of narration of this verse that it signifies towards the last Messenger of Allah Almighty (glory, grace, peace and blessings be upon Him). Religious commentators, research scholars and philosophers have taken these meanings of the verse also.

Ma-‘ahum – (they possess), it aims the Holy Scripture, Torah, which was heavenly Book of the Children of Israel and the last Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) confirmed it.

KitaabAllaahi – (the Book of Allah), here it aims Torah too, guidance of which was not admitted by the Children of Israel. These people did not believe also in the last Messenger Muhammad (glory, grace, peace and blessings be upon Him), though, open signs and foretelling had been mentioned in their Holy Book (Torah). The Jewish Scholars tried their best to hide these foretelling and the common Jewish people opposed Islam and the Muslims limitless, whereas their deliverance was connected with the Belief in Islam.

Waraaa-‘a  zuhuurihim – (behind their backs), it is a proverb, which means, “They took it carelessly and opposed it practically”.

In this verse, it is being described to the Children of Israel that the Last Messenger Muhammad (glory, grace, peace and blessings be upon Him) has not come for the purpose that He should remove their religion, but He (glory, grace, peace and blessings be upon Him) has come to refresh it and provide it a new life. Therefore, not obeying Him (glory, grace, peace and blessings be upon Him) is just like ruining entirely their religion by undermining its foundations themselves.

Besides all these Revelations, the Children of Israel began to oppose the religion Islam publicly, and which glad tidings had been mentioned in Torah about the coming of the Last Messenger Muhammad (glory, grace, peace and blessings be upon Him), and which signs and tokens were described, they changed Torah to hide them and became quite apparently unknown, as though, they did never know that corroborative evidence and confirmation regarding the last Prophet (glory, grace, peace and blessings be upon Him) exists in it.

99.  And verily We have revealed unto thee clear verses, and only miscreants will disbelieve in them. 100.  Is it ever so that when they make a covenant a party of them set it aside? The truth is, most of them believe not.

99.  Wa laqad ‘anzalNaaa ‘ilay-ka ‘Aayaatim- bayyinaat. Wa maa yakfuru bihaaa ‘illal-faasi-quun. 100.  ‘Awa- kullamaa  ‘aahaduu ‘ahdan-nabazahuu fariiqum-minhum.  Bal ‘aksaruhum laa yu’-minuun.

Commentary

‘Aayaatim- bayyinaat – (clear verses), ‘Aayaat means verses, literally it means ‘tokens’, ‘signs’. The word ‘Aayaat is used for many purposes i.e. punctuation in the Holy Qur’an, Orders, Instructions, and Commands of God Almighty are also called ‘Aayaat, and all those speeches and things which are signs of the Omnipotence of God Almighty, will be included in its meanings.

Bayyinaat – singular of this word is Bayyinah, which means clear, bright. The meanings of this entire sentence may be the Holy Qur’an too, as well as the Miracles and Commands of God Almighty.

The Children of Israel were materialists, so God Almighty bestowed upon their Prophets and Messengers (peace be upon Them) Miracles outward and relating to matter. Near them, proof of the truth of any Prophet (peace be upon Him) was that He (peace be upon Him) would have the Miracles. When the Last Prophet and Messenger Muhammad (glory, grace, peace and blessings be upon Him) was sent, the Children of Israel said surprisingly, “of what sort is this Prophet? He has no sign or token of prophet-hood. Replying to them, Allah Almighty commanded, “You demand one sign of Prophet-hood, We have bestowed many signs and tokens upon Our Messenger (glory, grace, peace and blessings be upon Him) and those signs & tokens are neither hidden, nor dim. Moreover, these are clear and bright verses, which may be seen by everyone. After reflecting into them, any individual, who has true nature, cannot deny from them. Only those people will disbelieve, who has become habitual of breaking the Laws of God Almighty and violating His Commandments.

History of the Children of Israel has been filled with the happenings of treachery, breaking the covenants, disobeying and violence. Whenever, any Messenger of Allah Almighty brought the Clear Verses unto them, they falsified Him. Moreover, after making the covenant to obey God Almighty and His Prophet (glory, grace, peace and blessings be upon Him), they did not remain firm on it. This habit of refusal and disobeying of the Jews stopped them from accepting the prophet-hood of the Last Messenger Muhammad (glory, grace, peace and blessings be upon Him).
