Quran Chapter 2- 130 (Pt-1, Stg-1) (L-156) -

Abraham's Religion

Surah ‘Al-Baqarah (The Cow) – Chapter – 2)

BisMillaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

130.  And who forsaketh the religion of Abraham save him who befooleth himself? And verily We chose him in the world, and lo! In the Hereafter he is among the righteous.
130.  Wa many-yargabu ‘am-Millati ‘Ibraahiima ‘illaa man safiha nafsah. Wa laqadista-fayNaahu  fiddunyaa. Wa ‘inna-huu fil-‘Aakhirati laminas-Saalihiin.

Commentary

Yargabu ‘an – (to forsake, to leave, to shake off), this word has been derived from the word raghbat, which means ‘to incline to; to turn unto, to attend to, to favor to. When the word ‘an comes with this word then meaning becomes on the contrary to this word that is to say, to go opposite to someone or to turn away.

In this verse, God Almighty has commanded that religious sect of Prophet Abraham (peace be upon Him) is Upright according to the religion of nature/wisdom. His teachings interpret the nature of cool-minded. Only that individual will oppose it whose nature has not remained moderated and has changed from good to bad.

Religious sect of Prophet Abraham (peace be upon Him) is the same as the religion which is being invited by Islam today. Here, the religion - Islam has been named as the religious sect of Abraham (peace be upon Him) that the Children of Israel and the Christians are being addressed here, and it is intended to tell them that Holy Qur’an does not invite you to any new religion. You are being invited towards the religion of your own honorable forefather and spiritual guide Prophet Abraham (peace be upon Him).

The Children of Israel and the Christians had not left any stone unturned to invent the self-made and false tales about their innocent Prophets (peace be upon Them). Holy Qur’an refutes their blames. Wherever the Prophets (peace be upon Them) are mentioned, It (the Holy Qur’an) mentions their moral and spiritual magnificence also.

Here, it has been commanded about the Prophet Abraham (peace be upon Him) that God Almighty had chosen Him for every kind of blessings of the world due to His belief that the Worshiped is only One, and having faith in Allah Almighty. He was bestowed with the honor of Messenger and Prophet. He was appointed as religious and spiritual guide for the people of the world, and surely, He (blessings on Him) will be counted in the good and virtuous people on the Day of Resurrection.

Purpose of describing about greatness and magnificence of Prophet Abraham (peace be upon Him) is to tell the Children of Israel and the Christians that the Prophet, whom they admit as the great, glorious and honorable Guide, His religion was Islam also, which is being presented by the Last Prophet Muhammad (glory, grace, blessings and peace be upon Him). If they take Him (blessings on Him) as their religious leader then they should accept Islam. It is the only way of their forefathers.

Four Characteristics of Muhammad (peace be upon Him) - Quran Chapter 2- 129 (Pt-1, Stg-1) (L-155) -

Quran Chapter 2- 129 (Pt-1, Stg-1) (L-155) -

Four Characteristics of Muhammad (peace be upon Him)

Surah ‘Al-Baqarah (The Cow) – Chapter – 2)

BisMillaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

129.  Our Lord! And raise up in their midst a Messenger from among them who shall recite unto them Thy Revelations, and shall instruct them in the Scripture and in Wisdom and shall make them grow. Lo! Thou, only Thou, art the Mighty, Wise.
129.  Rabbanaa  wab-‘as  fiihim Rasuulam-minhum  yatluu  ‘alayhim  ‘AayaatiKa wa yu-‘allimuhumul- Kitaaba  wal-Hikmata wa yuzakkiihim  ‘InnaKa  ‘Antal-‘Aziizul-Hakiim.

Commentary

Minhum – (from among them), the Prophets Abraham and Ishmael (peace be upon Them) are praying collectively, “O our Lord! Produce a Submissive group/class out of the race from both of us and raise up also a Messenger from among them. It is evident clearly that it signifies towards the race out of the Prophet Ishmael (peace be upon Him). God Almighty accepted their supplication and the Last Messenger of God Almighty, Muhammad (glory, grace, blessings and peace be upon Him) was born from the Children of Prophet Ishmael (peace be upon Him).

Yatluu  ‘alayhim  ‘AayaatiKa – (He shall recite unto them Thy Revelations). The first work of the Messenger of Allah Almighty (glory, grace, blessings and peace be upon Him) is recitation of the verses of Holy Qur’an in front of His nation. That is to say; ‘to convey and teach the Word of Allah Almighty. As though, His first status/position is “the Greatest Preacher”.

Yu-‘allimuhumul- Kitaaba – (He shall instruct them in the Scripture, teach them The Book) the work of Messenger of God Almighty (glory, grace, blessings and peace be upon Him) does not end only on preaching and conveying, It is His duty too to teach the Holy Book of God Almighty after preaching and conveying. As it were, His second status/position is the Greatest Teacher.

Al-Hikmata – (Knowledge, talks of Wisdom), Third work of the Prophet of God Almighty is to teach wisdom and philosophy, to cause to know the Commands and matters relating Holy Qur’an, to teach etiquettes, to tell the solution of various and complicated matters regarding the life in Its light as though; His third status is the greatest religious and spiritual Guide.

Yuzakkiihim – (He shall make them grow, shall purify them) Tazkiah means the purification of the hearts. Fourth work of the Messenger of God Almighty (glory, grace, blessings and peace be upon Him) is to produce chastity of morality and sincerity of intentions with His company and training. That is to say, He is the greatest Antidote and Reformer.

The Prophet Abraham and His son Prophet Ishmael (peace be upon Them) used to pray from Allah Almighty during the construction of the House of Allah, “O Our Lord! Produce a Submissive nation from our race, raise up a Messenger from among them, He would have four characteristics:

He (glory, grace, blessings and peace be upon Him) would recite, teach and admonish the Book of Allah to the people, and by means of It; purify their hearts. That is to say, He would be Preacher, Teacher, religious and spiritual Guide, and Reformer”. These entire characteristics were fulfilled into the Last Messenger of God Almighty (glory, grace, blessings and peace be upon Him).

Quran Chapter 2- 127 & 128 (Pt-1, Stg-1) (L-154) -

Supplication for Muslim Ummah

Surah ‘Al-Baqarah (The Cow) – Chapter – 2)

BisMillaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

127.  And when Abraham and Ishmael were raising the foundations of the House, (Abraham and Ishmael prayed): Our Lord! Accept from us (this duty) Lo! Thou, only Thou, art the Hearer, the Knower.

128.  Our Lord! And make us submissive unto Thee and of our seed a nation submissive unto Thee, and show us our ways of worship, and relent toward us. Lo! Thou, only Thou, art the Relenting, the Merciful.
127.  Wa ‘iz yarfa-‘u ‘Ibraa-hiimul-qawaa-‘ida minal-Bayti wa ‘Ismaa-‘iil.  Rabbanaa ta-qabbal minnaa ‘InnaKa ‘An-tas-Samii-‘ul-‘Aliim.

128.  Rabbanaa waj-‘alnaa Muslimayni laKa wa min-zur-riyyatinaaa    ‘Ummatam-Mus-limatal-laK; wa ‘arinaa ma-naasikanaa wa tub ‘alaynaa ‘InnaKa ‘Antat-Tawwaabur-Rahiim.

Commentary

Yarfa-‘u – (were raising), foundation of the Building of Ka’-bah had been laid by Prophet Adam (peace be upon Him) during His time. This building had been demolished after being infirm. So then it was being raised again from the beginning. The word yarfa-‘u has been derived from the word rafa-’a. It is used in the meanings of to erect, to raise and lift up etc.

Muslimayni – (the Obedient, submissive), it aims towards two meanings.

·        The Believers of the Oneness of God Almighty.

·        Those people, who remain bound in the common instructions and orders of Islam.

Prophets Abraham and Ishmael (peace be upon Them) were already Muslims at that time. Aim of this prayer was “increase our obedience and keep us steadfast”. Its singular is Muslim. Islam is also from its origin. The literal meanings of Muslim are ‘well wisher, security provider, submissive and obedient.

‘Ummatam-Mus-limatan – (Submissive group/class), ‘Ummah means group and class. Mus-limah means submissive, obedient. It may be applied fully and only on the nation of Last Messenger of God Almighty (glory, grace, blessings and peace be upon Him).

Ma-naasikanaa – (our ways of worship for performing Pilgrimage), it means “the religious methods particularly of performing Hajj”. These are also called the customs of Hajj (Pilgrimage).

When Prophets Abraham and Ishmael (peace be upon Them) were raising the foundations of Ka’-bah, alongside they were praying, “Our Lord! Accept from us (this duty) Lo! Thou, only Thou, art the Hearer, the Knower. Our Lord! And make us submissive unto Thee and of our seed a nation submissive unto Thee, and show us our ways of worship, and relent toward us. Lo! Thou, only Thou, art the Relenting, the Merciful”.

Mecca – A Peaceful City - Quran Chapter 2- 126 (Pt-1, Stg-1) (L-153) -

Quran Chapter 2- 126 (Pt-1, Stg-1) (L-153) -

Mecca – A Peaceful City

Surah ‘Al-Baqarah (The Cow) – Chapter – 2)

BisMillaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

126.  And when Abraham prayed: My Lord! Make this a region of security and bestow upon its people fruits, such of them as believe in Allah and the Last Day. He answered: And as for him who disbelieveth, I shall leave him in contentment for a while, then I shall compel him to the doom of Fire---a hapless journey’s end!
126.  Wa ‘iz qaala ‘Ibraahiimu Rabbij-‘al haazaa Baladan ‘Aaminanw – warzuq ‘ahlahuu minas-samaraati man ‘aamana minhum, Billaahi wal-Yawmil- ‘Aakhir.  Qaala wa man-kafara fa-‘umatti-‘uhuu qaliilan- summa ‘aztarruhuuu  ‘ilaa  ‘azaabin-Naar. Wa bi’-sal-masiir.

Commentary

Qaliilan – (for a while, a few days), it aims the life of this world. Because comparing to the Day of Resurrection, the life of this world is like ‘for a while’.

Fa-‘umatti-‘uhuu – (I shall leave him in contentment, I shall do well to him also), this word has been derived from Mataa’, which means Goods, valuables.

When Prophet Abraham (peace be upon Him) completed the construction work of the Temple of Makkah, Ka’ba (the Square Building), then He (peace be upon Him) prayed from God Almighty as under:

·        Make this (Building, Its City and Its Surroundings) a Region of Security

·        Bestow upon its people fruits, such of them as believe in Allah and the Last Day.

His both supplications were accepted. So the House of Allah (the Building of Ka’ba) and its all surrounding area, which has been included in Haram, (killing any individual or hunting any living creature is totally forbidden). Although the entire land is stony and sandy but fresh and dry fruit, vegetables and grains are available here every time abundantly.

Prophet Abraham (peace be upon Him) was told that the cruel and evildoers will be disappointed from the dignity of Leadership. He (peace be upon Him) remembered this order and at the time of supplication for bestowing grains and fruit, prayed only for the Believers. God Almighty commanded, “Religious Leadership is specified only for the Believers and the Obedient. However, the disbelievers and Infidels will also be not forfeited from worldly lives. But they will get these things for a short period only during their lifetime. After death, on the Day of Resurrection; they will be thrown into the Fire of Hell as punishment of their disobedience, which is the worst abode.

Laws of Hajj (Pilgrimage) - Quran Chapter 2- 125b (Pt-1, Stg-1) (L-152) -

Quran Chapter 2- 125b (Pt-1, Stg-1) (L-152) -

Laws of Hajj (Pilgrimage)

Surah ‘Al-Baqarah (The Cow) – Chapter – 2)

BisMillaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

125b.   And We imposed a duty upon Abraham and Ishmael, (saying): Purify My House for those who go around and those who meditate therein and those who bow down and prostrate themselves (in worship).
125b.    Wa ‘ahidNaa ‘ilaaa  ‘Ibraa-hiima wa  ‘Ismaa-iila  ‘an- tahhiraa Baytiya  littaaa-‘ifiina wal-‘aa-kifiina   war-rukka-is-sujuud.

Commentary

‘AhidNaa – (We imposed a duty), this word has been derived from ‘a-ha-da, which means promise, admission. But here, it has been used for ‘amirNaa (We ordered).

‘Ismaa-iila – (Ishmael), He (peace be upon him) was elder son of Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him). He had twelve sons and from them; twelve races were grown. The famous tribe of Arab “Quraish” is from His (peace be upon Him) lineage. He is one of the Forefathers of the Last Messenger Muhammad (glory, grace, blessings and peace be upon Him). Duty for building the House of Allah was imposed upon Him and His father Prophet Abraham (peace be upon Them).

Tahhiraa – (Purify), this word has been made from Tahaarat, which means cleanliness. It includes inmost cleanliness also besides outward cleanliness, that is to say; purify The House of Allah from un-cleanliness of infidelity and plurality.

Baytiya – (My House), Allah Almighty has called The House of Allah - My House. Intent from it is to disclose the greatness and grandeur of The House of Allah at Makkah.

‘Ittaaa-‘ifiina – (those, who go around), at the time of pilgrimage, it is duty of every Pilgrim that he/she should move around the House of God Almighty (The Square Building in Makkah) seven rounds. It was proclaimed first of all in The House of Allah about Oneness of God. So revolving around it is like a promise with tongue, that central spot of our entire lives, the entire acts and worships, is only the Oneness of God Almighty.

‘Aa-kifiina – (those, who meditate therein), to necessitate staying at any place for reverence, according to the religious law of God, ‘i’-tikaaf means to stay in the mosque for the purpose of worship for a particular period. ‘I’-tikaaf remained a practice (Sunnah) of Prophet Muhammad (glory, grace, blessings and peace be upon Him) during the last ten days of the Month of Ramadhan.

Mention of Prophet Abraham (peace be upon Him) begins from here, so that it may be proved to the Children of Israel, “What were His teachings (peace be upon Him) to whom they accept as their forefather and are proud of it?” Then it may also be noted that God Almighty commanded this glorious and respectable Prophet (peace be upon Him), “You will be made Leader of the people due to your sacrifices but this dignity and honor will not be given to the wrongdoers from your lineage”. Because the Children of Israel have given up the straight and actual path, so after snatching from them; this honor is being transferred to the second branch of the Prophet Abraham’s Children i.e. the Children of Ishmael (peace be upon Them).

Quran Chapter 2- 125a (Pt-1, Stg-1) (L-151) -

Importance of the House of Allah

Surah ‘Al-Baqarah (The Cow) – Chapter – 2)

BisMillaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

125a.  And when We made the House (at Makkah) a resort for mankind and Sanctuary, (saying): Take as your place of worship the place where Abraham stood (to pray).
125a.  Wa ‘iz ja-‘alNal-Bayta masaabatal-linnaasi wa  ‘am-naa.  Wattakhizuu mim-Ma-qaami  ‘Ibraahiima musallaa.

Commentary

‘Al-Bayta – {the House (at Makkah)}, literally, meaning of Bayt is ‘a House’. ‘Al-Bayt-Ullaah- al-Haraam  (a Sacred House of God Almighty i.e. Ka’bah). This Square Building is in Makkah, the Respected Place. It is the oldest place for the worship of God Almighty on the earth. The Holy Qur’an has proclaimed also that it is the first and the oldest place for worship. It is also called The House of Allah, Bayt Ullah and Qiblah.

Masaabatan – (a resort, a place for assembly/gathering), this word has been derived from sa-wa-ba or suub, which means “to return unto its original form”. So Masaabatan means “the place towards which the mankind inclines over and over and never feels discomfort coming back again and again”. It is the virtue of Al-Bayt-Ullaah- al-Haraam that the people come in again and again for Hajj (Pilgrimage) and they do not be weary of it.

Linnaasi – (for mankind), it indicates towards the common people, who come for pilgrimage. The individuals assemble around Al-Bayt-Ullaah- al-Haraam from every part of the world, every country and territory, every year for Hajj and Umrah (Pilgrimage).

‘Am-naa – (Sanctuary, sacred and protected place), the Building of Ka’ba (The House of Allah) and its all surrounding area, has been included in Haram. Killing any mankind or hunting any living creature is totally forbidden. Before Islam, the killers and criminals used to take shelter between the walls of The House of Allah.

Ma-qaami  ‘Ibraahiima – (the place,  a Stone, where Abraham stood for constructing the Building of The House of Allah). This stone has been saved in a small chamber at a little distance away from the Building of The House of Allah. After completion of seven rounds around The House of Allah during pilgrimage, two rak’at prayers are offered in front of this chamber. This virtue contains much future reward.

Musallaa – (the Place of Worship), in Arabic language, all those places will be called musallaa where the prayers may be offered.
