Test of the Soldiers

Surah ‘Al-Baqarah (The Cow) – Chapter – 2)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

249a.  And when Saul set out with the army, he said: Lo! Allah will try you by (the ordeal of) a river. Whosoever therefore drinketh thereof he is not of me, and whosoever tasteth it not he is of me, save him who taketh (thereof) in the hollow of his hand. But they drank thereof, all save a few of them.
249a.  Fa-lammaa  fasala  Taa-luutu  bil-junuudi, qaala  ‘innAllaaha  mubtaliikum-bi-nahar.  Faman-shariba  minhu  falaysa  minnii.  Wa  mal-lam  yat-‘amhu  fa-‘innahuu  miniii  ‘illaa manig-tarafa  gurfatam- bi-yadih.  Fa-sharibuu minhu  ‘illaa  qaliilam-minhum.

Commentary

Nahar – (canal), a river from which the Army had to pass through. The name of this river is stated as Jordan River. Name of Hashmiite Government of the Eastern Jordan is also related to this river. It flows north to south and drops down in to the Dead Sea.

Man-shariba  minhu – (whosoever drinks out of it), it means that the individual who will drink water from this river bellyful, he will be disobedient and he will be expelled from my group.

Gurfatam- bi-yadihii – (in the hollow of his hand), that is to say; there will be permission only to drink the water; quantity of which should not be more than a hollow of the hand for wetting  the dry lips and quenching the thirst.

When Saul (peace be upon him) set out with the Army of the children of Israel to fight against Goliath, Allah Almighty established for them a test, which was that; nobody should drink the water bellyful from Jordan River in the way.

No command and order from God Almighty is without philosophy and wisdom. Surely, any use and advantage is hidden for human being in every command and restriction. So, it was not only a test but there were many advantages in this restriction in respect of their health and character, which they could not understand at that time. However they knew it very soon.

248.  And their Prophet said unto them: Lo! The token of his kingdom is that there shall come unto you the ark wherein is peace of reassurance from your Lord, and remnant of that which the house of Moses and the house of Aaron left behind, the angels bearing it. Lo! Herein shall be a token for you if (in truth) ye are believers.

Commentary

‘At- Taa-buutu – (Ark), Chest containing the tablets of the law of Prophet Moses (peace be upon him), original Scripture of Torah and sacred relics of the Prophets from the children of Israel . The name of this box is also Taa-buuti Sakiinah. It was the greatest national inheritance for the children of Israel. They used to keep it with them every time even during journey and war. They used to consider it as very auspicious and place it in front specially during war so that Allah SubhaanaHuu wa Ta-‘aala bestow them victory with its blessings.

Prophet Samuel (peace be upon him) appointed Prophet Saul (peace be upon him) as King of the children of Israel by the Command of Allah Almighty. In that case He (peace be upon him) told them also for their satisfaction that apparent token of his kingdom is such blessed Ark which was snatched by Goliath from you. You will get back that Ark during the rule of Saul (peace be upon him).

It has been known from the history that from the time, when the Palestinians had snatched this Ark from the children of Israel, they could never live with comfort. Wherever (in any place or city) they used to keep it, either any contagious disease used to burst or any calamity used to come there. At last, they decided; being frustrated that they should get rid of this Ark. So they loaded this Ark in a bullock cart and drove it without any Cart man. The Angels (peace be upon them) of God Almighty brought it at the Saul’s door (peace be upon him). After looking this token, the children of Israel believed in the kingdom of Saul (peace be upon him).

It has also been declared from the history that this Ark remained in possession of the children of Israel till the reign of Prophet Solomon (peace be upon him) (230 BC). He (peace be upon him) kept it in the Haikal of Solomon  of the Temple of Jerusalem after its erection. After that, it did not appear. The children of Israel think that until now, it is burial in the bottom of the foundation of the Haikal of Solomon (peace be upon Him).

Commentary

It has been described in the first part of this verse that Prophet Samuel (peace be upon him) proclaimed on behalf of Allah Almighty that He has raised up Saul (peace be upon him) to be a king for the children of Israel. But they criticized this selection due to vanity of their richness, that; while he (peace be upon him) was not richer than them, then how could he be their king?

Prophet of God Almighty (peace be upon him) stated following qualities fixed by Allah Almighty for sovereignty and leadership:

·       Allah has chosen him because He has bestowed him wisdom abundantly.

·       Stature of Saul (peace be upon him) is more powerful comparatively than all of them.

Basta-tan-fil-‘ilmi – (he has been  given wisdom abundantly), ‘ilm means knowledge about facts and to recognize the secrets. There are uncountable meanings hidden in this one word, all kinds of sciences and arts are included in it, particularly sciences about ruling and governing the world.

‘Al-jism – (stature), the aim from it is that Saul (peace be upon Him) has more ability regarding strength, power and is more reliable respecting stature than all of you. The individual who would have more powers of both (knowledge and stature, certainly, he would be able to get preference and leadership over others.

MulkaHuu – (His sovereignty), it’s object is that actual Sovereignty is of Allah Almighty and this Authority is in fact for Him, Who is Alone.

Now, it is Allah Almighty’s especial Favor and Mercy that He gives in charge the service of governing the people to the people, who is most deserving and worthy; out of His servants.

247a.  Their Prophet said unto them: Lo! Allah hath raised up Saul to be a king for you. They said: How can he have kingdom over us when we are more deserving of the kingdom than he is, since   he hath not been given wealth enough?
247a.  Wa  qaala  lahum  Nabiy-yuhum  ‘innAllaaha  qad  ba-‘asa  lakum  Taaluuta  Malikaa.  Qaaluuu  ‘annaa  yakuunu  lahul-mulku  ‘alaynaa  wa  nahnu  ‘a-haqqu  bil-mulki  minhu  wa  lam  yu’-ta  sa-‘atam-minal-maal.

Commentary

Taaluuta – (Saul son of Kash), after Prophet Moses, Saul (peace be upon them) has been recognized as very great and first king of the children of Israel. His reign is told from 1028 BC to 1012 BC. He (peace be upon him) belonged to Bin-Yaamiin Tribe, which had a customary grade. Any king was never chosen out of that dynasty. Neither they were too much wealthy nor rich.

Evil-minded Jews criticized this (Saul’s) appointment as king that He (peace be upon him) has not been given enough wealth. He is a poor person. How can a poor person be a king for us (the rich people)? They thought that sovereignty and leadership is the inborn right of the rich-men.

It does not rest on the Jews only. The materialist nations made always these types of wrong principles, and they deemed the government as bondwoman of the house of rich people. While this concept is infinite foolish and un-justly, so Allah Almighty declared clearly this wrong concept of the Jews in His last Scripture for warning of coming breeds, so that nobody may remain in misunderstanding in future, and no nation should suppose the wealth and riches as standard of leadership and exaltation.

After it, if any nation or group considers the riches as cause of superiority even then, that nation or group would have to face the same punishment which the Jews already bore, because the Law of the Nature is not changed.

He said: Would ye then refrain from fighting if fighting were prescribed for you? They said: Why should we not fight in Allah’s Way when we have been driven from our dwellings with our children? Yet, when fighting was prescribed for them, they turned away, all save a few of them. And Allah is Aware of evildoers.

Commentary

It has been pointed also in this verse towards an important story of the history of the children of Israel. After some times of departing Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him), the Children of Israel gathered in the temple of Jerusalem being confused from the attacks of King Goliath and other enemies, and being helpless from each side. Perhaps this reign was of the Prophet Samuel (peace be upon him). They requested the Prophet of God Almighty (peace be upon him) to appoint for them a commander-in-chief, under whose supervision; they may fight. He (Prophet Samuel (peace be upon him) said, “I’m afraid that if it is commanded to Fight (do jihad), then would you not refrain from fighting”? They assured that they would have to fight in the Way of Allah, while they had been driven from their dwellings with their children. But when the time for fighting came, they all turned away save a few of them.
