Fraud of Hypocrites

Surah ‘Aali-‘Im-raan (The Family of ‘Imran) – Chptr – 3)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

156a.  O ye who believe! Be not as those who disbelieved and said of their brethren who went abroad in the land or were fighting in the field: If they had been (here) with us they would not have died or been killed; that Allah may make it anguish in their hearts.
156a.  Yaaa-‘ayyu-hallaziina  ‘aamanuu  laa  takuunuu  kallaziina  kafaruu  wa  qaaluu  li-‘ikhwaa-nihim  ‘izaa  zarabuu  fil-‘arzi  ‘aw  kaanuu  Guz-zal-law  kaanuu  ‘indanaa  maa  maatuu  wa  maa  qutiluu. Li-yaj-‘alAllaahu  zaalika  hasratan-  fii  quluubihim.

Commentary

The Muslims have been advised that they should not place such absurd thoughts in their hearts as of the Hypocrites, “If we had been in our houses then we would not have been died or killed”. Remember it always that place and time of death has been fixed since the beginning. Neither it can be changed and nor delayed.

‘Ikhwaa-nihim  -  (the Hypocrites), they were apparently Muslims. Therefore, they have called the Muslims here as their brethren. In addition, because they have used these words in the style of well wishing, so the word ’ikh-waan (Brothers) is used in this verse. They said, “Our Muslim brothers died without any cause by going abroad, if they had been with us in their houses, then why would have they been killed”?

The Hypocrites had aim that grief and sorrow should be produced in the hearts of the Muslims that, “Really we did wrong as we went abroad from our houses without thinking and plunged in to the war. If we would have acted upon the advice of Hypocrites and remained in our houses, then we would not have suffered from the misfortune.”

Although the Jews tried their best to produce sorrow and grief in the hearts of Muslims and used such words by their mouths, but the Muslims were not too much weak that they would have been taken in their words. On the contrary, because of such absurd talks, their secret was betrayed and their badness of intention was manifested upon the Muslims.

Li-yaj-‘alAllaahu  zaalika  hasratan-  fii  quluubihim – (that Allah may make it anguish in their hearts). Some commentators of Holy Qur’an have explained its meanings in such a manner that “Allah Almighty released such words from the tongues and hearts of the Hypocrites, so that they would be left burning in the fire of that sorrow and grief, and they remain grieving until the Hereafter. Other grief they would have was that, “Alas! The Muslims did not turn like us, they did not listen to us but some of them were martyred and remaining returned with victory. Today too, much can be learnt from the incidents of the day of the Battle of ‘Uhud. Therefore, a field of battle among faith and hypocrisy, right and wrong will remain existing always.

Commentary

It has been advised to the Hypocrites in this verse, “It is useless to cry over spilt milk, there is no advantage of reproaching and slandering, grief and sorrow. Allah Almighty has predestinated every person’s place, cause and time of death from the beginning, which cannot get out of the way. If you had been in your houses and suppose your advice had been accepted, even then; those persons, who were appointed to be slain in the camping ground of ‘Uhud, they would have gone forth to the places where they were to lie, somehow coming out from their houses. It is Kindness of Allah Almighty that the people, who were killed in the Battle, they were martyred, the death of braves in the Way of Allah Almighty. It is not the occasion to grieve and sorrow at this time”.

Then it has been declared that the purpose of this Battle was ‘to try the Believers and the Hypocrites so that the difference between the both may be distinguished, pure and false may become separate, sincere Muslims get remuneration of victory and their hearts may be purified from thoughts, inside of the Hypocrites be opened and their hypocrisy become public. As ability of more goodness increases from a goodness, likewise Satan gets opportunity from a sin or an evil to excite the human being for other sins or evils. The devil trembled their feet in the Battle of ‘Uhud but Allah Almighty was Bountiful upon the Muslims and He saved them from miserable defeat.

Commentary

It is being described continuously that the Muslims suffered from a temporary defeat, extreme distress and anxiety after getting victory in the Battle of ‘Uhud, because of the carelessness of the archers. The venturesome Muslims remained in the battlefield and put a bold front, but the coward Hypocrites ran away leaving behind the battlefield. They began to say after this incident for removing their disgrace, “Such was the Will of Allah, what is our authority in this matter”? Their actual aim from this saying was, “Our counsel was not complied in connection with the battle. We advised the Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) that the enemies should be encountered by remaining in the city, but he (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) went out of Madinah for war; to fulfill the instructions of the passionate young men. If we had some power and we would not be ignored then the Muslims would not have to get so much loss”.

Maa  qutilnaa  haa-hunaa – (then we should not have been slain here), the Hypocrites determined the slaughter of Ansaar (real habitant of Madinah) as slaughter of their own. It can also be meant that ‘why so many people should have been slain; if the victory and superiority were to be in accord with the Sayings of Muhammad (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) and why this misfortune would have fallen upon us?’ It is obvious from the word haa-hunaa (here) that the Hypocrites used these words in Madinah, because Abdullah bin ‘Ubayy had returned to Madinah with his companions before starting of the Battle. It has come to notice from some historians that a Hypocrite had used these words in the battlefield. It can be so that some Hypocrites would not have been returned due to some convenience.

Although, it was opinion of the Messenger of Allah (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) also that the battle should be fought by staying in Madinah as well as, it was advice of the Hypocrites, but maximum young companions (May Allah be pleased with them) judged that they should fight going out from the City. Allah’s Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) wore the chain armor for this purpose. In this form, the Hypocrites had no right to bring their men back from the Army of Islam. Entire decisions are in the Power of Allah Almighty. He gives victory if He wishes and gives defeat whenever He desires. It does not differ to fight with the enemy remaining in the city or going out of it.

Commentary

Circumstances of coward and spiritless Hypocrites are being described in this verse, who neither used to care for Islam, nor of the Gracious Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam), but they used to hold themselves most dear. They were constantly thinking, “How can we save ourselves, lest Army of the Infidels would attack on us again”. How could slumber or sleep come over them in such frightful condition?

Sincere Muslims did not run away from the battlefield even after observing the danger and remained steady and staying with Messenger (SallAllaahu ‘alayHi wa ‘AaliHii Wasallam). To remove their fatigue and tiredness, Allah Almighty prevailed slumber upon them. It produced peace and satisfaction in their hearts. Being refreshed they again stood still before the enemies.

There was a thief in the hearts of Hypocrites. They used to keep their lives dearer than Belief and Islam. They wished to save only their own lives. How slumber could prevail them while false thoughts had encircled their hearts. They said, “Where promises of Allah Almighty have gone? Where is Divine help and victory now? It seems that Islam is near to end now. Messenger (SallAllaahu ‘alayHi wa ‘AaliHii Wasallam) and the Muslims will not be able to go back to their homes now. As it has been described at another place, “Bal  zanantum  ‘allany-yanqali-bar-Rasuulu  wal-Mu’-minuuna  ‘ilaaa  ‘ahliihim  ‘abadaa (Nay, but ye deemed that the Messenger and the believers would never return to their own folks) - Suratul: Fat-h (Victory) (section -2).

The Hypocrites used to say, “Nothing is in our control”. Although, hypocrites were true apparently saying such words, really nothing is in the control of any human being. Everything is in the control of Allah Almighty. If He desires to make something, He may do so and if He wishes to destroy then it is easy for Him to destroy. He can allow one to prevail over others or conquer, either make someone ruler or under control. But the hypocrites were considering something other as its meanings.

‘Al-jaahiliyyah- (like the ignorant), from this word, the life before Islam is also inferred, because at that time, the Arabs neither had awareness of the religion, nor did they know the world. They were entirely ignorant and ill-mannered.

Commentary

There is a mention about another favor of Allah Almighty upon the Muslims in this verse. That is to say; in whose portion there was good fortune of martyrdom; they were martyred. The persons, who had to go, they had gone and those people from them, who were sincere Muslims and remained in the battlefield, form of slumber overcame them. The people began to slumber in the standing position. The sword fell down from the hand of Tal-ha (may Allah Almighty be pleased with him) many times. It was hidden and apparent affect of peace and calmness, which was approaching upon the hearts of the Muslims during such incident causing great riot with the Bounty of Allah Almighty. After this slumbering state, entire fear and confusion of the enemies was removed from their hearts. This condition of slumbering happened at such very time, when the Conquerors of Islam were much tired because of their wounds. Rumors about martyrdom of Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) had lost their senses and understanding.

yagshaa  - (overcame). The word gishaawah has come out from it, which means a screen, a curtain, a veil. Here it aims that Allah Almighty took them in the fold of slumber. After prevailing of the slumber over the Muslims, Allah Almighty removed their entire weariness and tiredness, and informed them that the time of fear, perplexity and disappointment has been over. Now you are entirely in peace. Perform your duty with full satisfaction.

The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) assembled around the Messenger of Allah Almighty (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) and established the front for war. They observed very soon that the enemy was running away; leaving behind the battlefield. Abdullah ibn Mas-‘uud (may Allah be pleased with him) says, “Overshadowing of the slumber in the very nick of time in the battle was a sign of victory and success from the favors of Allah Almighty”.

It was Bounty of Allah Almighty that He provided security and peace after coming of the narrowness, gave victory while certain defeat was ahead, removed the possibility of subjection and refreshed the Muslims by removing their exhaustion, so that they may bruise the enemies of the Just after getting new spirit. In addition, He inspired with awe of Islam and fear of the Right in the hearts of the Idolaters. It was the reason that the enemies could not face the situation while they had overcome.

If the Believers remain steadfast in their faith and confidence, show the steadiness and patience, then; help and victory from Allah Almighty remains with them always and the enemies of Truth return back on their heels falling short. Actual power and strength in the battlefield of crusade (Jihad) is satisfaction of the hearts and exaltation of the aim and spirit.

‘Iz  tus-‘iduuna – {When ye climbed (the hill)}. This word has been made from the word Sa-‘uud, which means ‘to climb’. Here it signifies towards a specific scene of the Battle of ‘Uhud. It was the situation when the Idolaters of Makkah assaulted afresh, reaping advantage from the error of the archers in the Battle of ‘Uhud, and the Muslims had been running away and climbing the hills. They paid no heed to anyone in the hurley burley and the perplexity.

At that time, the Messenger of Allah Almighty (SallAllaahu ‘alayHi wa ‘AaliHii Wasallam) was staying as usual at his place and preventing the Muslims from such cowardice and confusion, and calling them towards himself. Eventually, when Ka’b bin Malik (may Allah Almighty be pleased with him) screamed, then they listened, returned and assembled around the Messenger of Allah Almighty (SallAllaahu ‘alayHi wa ‘AaliHii Wasallam).

Gam-mam-bi-gammin – (grief for (the) grief). In other words, it may also be explained as ‘grief over grief’. In this sentence, it has been indicated towards that particular condition, when the tokens of defeat were being seen after the victory. The Muslims had grief on one side because of loss of primary victory and sorrow on the other side because of death and being injured of their companions. Their third grief was a bad news being public about the murder of the Messenger (SallAllaahu ‘alayHi wa ‘AaliHii Wasallam) . They had to bear also the loss of the spoils of war. In the stress and strain of such grief, they lost their senses, even that, they could not hear the voice of the Messenger (SallAllaahu ‘alayHi wa ‘AaliHii Wasallam).

Allah Almighty knows the intentions and deals with the affairs according to it. The archers did not wish to disobey, but they considered at their own that, “We have fulfilled the aim of the command of Messenger (SallAllaahu ‘alayHi wa ‘AaliHii Wasallam). Now, while we have got victory, we should also collect the spoils of war”. As though, they did not err intentionally. Therefore, Allah Almighty forgave them.

Test of Muslims

Surah ‘Aali-‘Im-raan (The Family of ‘Imran) – Chptr – 3)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

And Allah is a Lord of Kindness to believers.

Commentary

Messenger of Allah Almighty (SallAllaahu ‘alayHi wa ‘AaliHii Wasallam) had described the Muslims before starting of the war in the battlefield of ‘Uhud, “If you will have patience and remain steadfast, then you will get victory and obtain the mastery over the Infidels. Allah Almighty made good His promise in the beginning of the battle”. The Muslims stretched many heaps, by slaughtering the unbelievers with the Command of Allah Almighty. The Idolaters began to run away from the battlefield being stunned.

When the Muslims felt that they were succeeding and getting victory, they broke in for collection of the spoils of war (the wealth of plunder). In the meantime, the archers committed a serious error by disobeying the command of the Messenger (SallAllaahu ‘alayHi wa ‘AaliHii Wasallam). When Khalid bin Waliid observed that the hill-pass was without archers, he reaped advantage and within a few moments, the map of the battle was changed.

The archers began to quarrel with one another. Some of them said, “We should stay here” but others told that there was no more need to stay there. We should also collect the spoils of war”. At last, their maximum strength left the pass and went away for collection of the spoils of war. Then suddenly the Idolaters attacked from behind that pass. On the other side, the news regarding execution of the Prophet (SallAllaahu ‘alayHi wa ‘AaliHii Wasallam) became notorious.

Because of these entire circumstances, the weakness was born in the hearts of the Muslims. Resultantly, this cowardice arose. Some people inclined towards worldly wealth and property with pleasure, consequence of which was that they all suffered. The Infidels, who were running away recklessly; leaving the battlefield to save themselves, returned and broke in upon the Muslims. Then the Muslims were running away themselves. The matter inverted because of this shortness, mistake and error. It was also a test of the Muslims, so that the difference between immature and matured Muslims may be disclosed.
