Retaliation of evil committed by Cain - 1

Surah MAAA-‘IDAH (The Table Spread) – Chapter – 5)

 مِنْ أَجْلِ ذَٰلِكَ كَتَبْنَا عَلَىٰ بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ أَنَّهُۥ مَن قَتَلَ نَفْسًۢا بِغَيْرِ نَفْسٍ أَوْ فَسَادٍ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَكَأَنَّمَا قَتَلَٱلنَّاسَ  جَمِيعًا  وَمَنْ أَحْيَاهَا فَكَأَنَّمَآ أَحْيَا ٱلنَّاسَ جَمِيعًا وَلَقَدْ جَآءَتْهُمْ رُسُلُنَا بِٱلْبَيِّنَٰتِ ثُمَّ إِنَّ كَثِيرًا مِّنْهُم بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ  فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ  لَمُسْرِفُونَ  32.

32.  For that cause We decreed for the Children of Israel that whosoever killeth a human being for other than manslaughter or corruption in the earth, it shall be as if he had killed all mankind. And whoso saveth the life of one, it shall be as if he had saved the life of all mankind. And Our messengers came unto them of old with clear proofs (of Allah’s Sovereignty), but afterwards lo! many of them became prodigals in the earth.
32.  Min  ‘ajli  zaalika  katabNaa  ‘alaa    Baniii-  ‘Israaa-‘iila  ‘annahuu  man-qatala  nafsam-  bi-gayri  nafsin  ‘aw  fasaadin-  fil-‘arzi  faka- ‘annamaa  qatalan-naasa  jamii-‘aa.  Wa  man  ‘ahyaahaa  faka- ‘annamaaa  ‘ahyannaasa  jamii-‘aa.  Wa  laqad  jaaa-‘at-hum  rusuluNaa  bil-Bayyinaati  summa  ‘inna  kasiiram-minhum-  ba’-da  zaalika  fil-‘arzi  lamus-rifuun.    
    
‘Ajli – (the cause, the aim, the soul or essence), a mankind is collection of two things; the body and the soul. Actually, living thing is “the soul”. The body is living due to the soul. So, the mankind is soul in truth. 

Fasaad – (infringement, violation, breach of law), trying to break a formed thing is called fasaad.

‘Al-Bayyinaat – (conspicuous things), it is plural of bayyinatun, which means “clear proof”. Here it aims “the matters relating to the Divine command, or the tokens about the truth of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him). 

Lamus-rifuun – (the prodigals), it is from ‘asraaf, which means “to cross the limit, to molest, to violate”.

After describing the tale of Abel and Cain, now it is being mentioned that Cain (was the first mankind, who killed another mankind due to discomfiture of jealousy, rage and desire) opened the door of slaying for the entire human beings by killing Abel. Before him nobody killed anyone. After this bad act, the people began to slay one another unhesitatingly. Thus far that, the need to stop this practice was arisen and every Prophet (peace be upon Him) guided the people and forbade them from killing others.

Due to this reason, the Children of Israel has been commanded, “It is equal to kill the entire people by slaughtering anyone innocent without any ground and decision of the court, because in resemblance of one, others will be prepared to slay one another”. “And whoso saved the life of someone and did not kill although he had anger and outrage, then it shall be as if he had arranged to save the life of all the mankind”. A person does often that, what he looks being done by others. So, if anyone will do good works, in his imitation, others will also do good works, and if one will do evil, others will commit evils too by seeing him.

Cain’s loss of Afterlife due to slaying his brother Abel was too much that the world has no value before it, i.e. he opened the door of sin in the world. Therefore, he would not be punished only against his own sin, but he would also be punished for the sins of others after him, as whosoever will slay or give pain to other humankind for his/her own purpose until the Day of Resurrection. It has been written that none had killed anyone before Cain and nor anyone had died naturally till that time. So, Cain was confused that what he should do with the corpse of his brother.

It has been described in this verse that Allah Almighty sent a crow in front of him. After landing, the crow began to scratch the ground with its beak and paws. The commentators explain that the crow brought another dead crow, which was hanging in its beak. It put the dead crow on the earth, dug the ground and widened it. Then it put the dead crow into that pit and leveled the ground by putting the dust on it.

Cain saw the crow doing this all. At that time he suffered woe that he had not sense equal to a crow, which buried the corpse of its brother (the dead crow) into the ground. At that time he would have thought, “This crow had so much fellow-feeling (sympathy) with the other crow like it that it took up the dead crow, brought here and hid it in the ground, while that crow had died naturally. Whereas, I killed not only a man like me, but I killed my own real brother intentionally, and then I had not even so much sense that I could save the corpse from the disgrace of rotting openly”. It manifests that He was not only more hard hearten than the crow but was also dull in comparison with it. So repentance and self-condemnation pressed him down and he began to grieve due to his bad work.

We can understand from this lesson that human body’s respect is till then it is living (the soul is in it). When the soul is out from the body, then the same body becomes occasion of shame for the human being, as it was a filthy and disgusting thing, defects of which were hidden by the soul. Therefore, the word saw-‘ata has been used in this verse, which means “bad and disgusting thing (corpse)”, for which it is better that it should be removed from the sight as soon as possible. Truly, beauty of the body is by the means of soul; otherwise, it is nothing except a handful dust.

Blessed are those people, who understand this fine point of their lives and do not entertain this heap of mud so much, due to which a pure thing like soul has to suffer punishment and disaster. Therefore, it has been told, “Leave the bodily pleasures and seek the spiritual Delight”.

 فَطَوَّعَتْ لَهُۥ نَفْسُهُۥ قَتْلَ أَخِيهِ فَقَتَلَهُۥ فَأَصْبَحَ مِنَ ٱلْخَٰسِرِينَ  30.

  فَبَعَثَ ٱللَّهُ غُرَابًا يَبْحَثُ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ لِيُرِيَهُۥ كَيْفَ يُوَٰرِى سَوْءَةَ أَخِيهِ قَالَ يَٰوَيْلَتَىٰٓ أَعَجَزْتُ أَنْ أَكُونَ مِثْلَ  هَٰذَا  ٱلْغُرَابِ فَأُوَٰرِىَسَوْءَةَ أَخِى فَأَصْبَحَ مِنَ ٱلنَّٰدِ مِينَ  31.

30.  But (the other’s) mind imposed on him the killing of his brother, so he slew him and became one of the losers.

31.  Then Allaah sent a raven scratching up the ground, to show him how to hide his brother’s naked corpse. He said: Woe unto me! Am I not able to be as this raven and so hide my brother’s naked corpse? Then he became repentant.                
30.  Fatawwa-‘at  lahuu  nafsuhuu  qatla  ‘akhiihi  faqatalahuu  fa-‘asbaha  minal-khaasiriin. 

31.  Faba-‘asAllaahu  guraabany-yab-hasu  fil-‘arzi  li-yuriyahuu  kayfa  yuwaarii  saw-‘ata  ‘akhiih.  Qaala  yaa-way-lataaa  ‘a-‘ajaztu  ‘an  ‘akuuna  misla  haazal-guraabi  fa-‘uwaariya  saw-‘ata  ‘akhii.  Fa- ‘asbaha  minan-naadimiin.

    Commentary
    
Tawwa-‘at - it is from tatwii’, which means, “To show somebody any bad work in a good form, so that he may be inclined to do it. 

Yab-hasu – (scratched up), it is from bahas, which means “to scratch, to dig”. That is to say; a raven (a kind of crow) began to dig the ground with its beak and paws before him. 

Yaa-way-lataaa – (woe unto me), this word is spoken in Arabic language at the time of “heavy calamity, sorrow or an exclamation of grief”. 

‘Ajaztu – (I am not able to), it has been derived from ‘ajaz, which means “to be helpless, not to be able to do any particular work”. Saw-‘ata – (a bad thing, to be displeasing one’s eyes), here it means “Corpse”.

The heart of Cain, which was becoming insane due to jealousy, desire and rage, guided him to kill his own brother. The person, who becomes blind due to own wishes, strikes nothing to him except that to trouble others for his own interest at every cost. Therefore, he killed his brother Abel, but its result was not other than his own loss.

Worldly loss was that he was deprived of his companion and helper like a sincere brother. It has come in the Sayings of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) that there are two such sins, retaliation of which are faced in the world too before the Day of Resurrection; one is “violation of other’s right”, and the other is “to trouble the relatives” which is called “breaking off the relationship (the kinship)”.

Behavior of the Abstinent

لَئِنۢ بَسَطتَ إِلَىَّ يَدَكَ لِتَقْتُلَنِى مَآ أَنَا۠ بِبَاسِطٍ يَدِىَ إِلَيْكَ لِأَقْتُلَكَ إِنِّىٓ أَخَافُ ٱللَّهَ رَبَّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ  28.

 إِنِّىٓ أُرِيدُ أَن تَبُوٓأَ بِإِثْمِى وَإِثْمِكَ فَتَكُونَ مِنْ أَصْحَٰبِ ٱلنَّارِ وَذَٰلِكَ جَزَٰٓؤُا۟ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ 29.

28.  Even if thou stretch out thy hand against me to kill me, I shall not stretch out my hand against thee to kill thee. Lo! I fear Allah, the Lord of the Worlds.

29.  Lo! I would rather thou shouldst bear the punishment of the sin against me and thine own sin and become one of the owners of the Fire. And that is the reward of evildoers. 
28.  La-‘im-  basatta  ‘ilayya  yadaka  litaq-tulanii  maaa  ‘ana  bi-baasitiny-yadiya  ‘ilayka  li-‘aqtulak.  ‘Inniii  ‘akhaa-fUllaaha  Rabbal-‘Aalamiin.

29.  ‘Inniii  ‘uriidu  ‘an-  tabuuu-‘a    bi-‘ismii  wa  ‘ismika  fatakuuna  min  ‘As-haabin-Naar.  Wa  zaalika  jazaaa-‘uzzalimiin.                 

    Commentary

Basatta – (you stretch), it is from basat, which means “to spread, to stretch, to lengthen”. Baasit has been derived too from the same word, which means “Given of the prosperity, one of the attributes of Allah Almighty”. 

Tabuuu-‘a – (you bear, you get), it is from buu-‘un, which means “to return”. This word has come in Surah ‘Al-Baqarah and the aim of it is “when you finish your work, then there should be load of two sins upon you, 1. Load of that sin, what will be done by you. 2. The load of the sin of my murder”

Abel said to the Cain after it, “If you will stretch out your hand against me to kill me, then it will be your own apprehension. I shall never stretch out my hand with the intention to kill you. Because I fear Allah Almighty, and I know that He is the Lord of the Worlds, and all the works are managed by His support. I will never wish to displease Him because I fear Him. I have intended neither to shake any part of my body in defense and nor say such a word due to which you become angry upon me, and you kill me in anger. Doing so, some portion of the sin will return to me also. I want to have patience and in such this manner, you should lift the load of my sins as well as your own sins and bear the punishment of the sins against me and yours own. Its result will be that you will become one of the owners of the Fire because that is the reward of evildoers.

Abel said all this for the purpose that perhaps Cain would abstain from the sin by hearing this entire, “I will never contend with you and the load of entire sin will be on your body, and you will be included in the evildoers”. But Cain had become thoughtless due to his wishes. He listened nothing.

Result of killing an innocent

God Almighty commands to His Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him): Recite and cause to hear them with truth the tale of the two sons of Adam (peace be upon him), {that how did they both offer a sacrifice separately, and it was accepted from one of them and was not accepted from the other. The other said: I will surely kill thee. The first person answered: Allah accepteth only from those who ward off (evil)}. So that they may understand that killing of an innocent for fulfilling own desire and refusing from fighting according to God’s commandment is just like fighting against Allah Almighty. This refusal is not due to the reason that they do not know “how to slay”. But the object of their such behavior is that they kill the innocent people, which is cause of disturbance in the society. And when Allah Almighty commands them to kill the enemies, due to slaying of which, the disturbance and outbreak may be hindered. And peace is established. At that time, they reply stupidly and refuse to strive. What can be result of this denial except that those should be ruined and punished very severely, who refused from Jihad.

Prophet Adam (peace be upon Him) desired to wed Abel with a girl in accord with the procedure at that time. Cain, the brother of Abel said, “No, I should be married this girl”. To finish the wrangling, Prophet Adam (peace be upon Him) said to his both sons, “You both should offer a sacrifice separately for the sake of Allah Almighty. That girl will be married with the person, whose sacrifice is accepted”. It was an established order in those days that the person, who had to offer a sacrifice, he used to bring any good thing and put it at a prescribed place. The sacrifice of the person, whose was accepted, that person’s thing was taken up by a fire, and whose thing was not eaten by the fire, that was considered “Not accepted”.

The offering was brought by the both i.e. Abel and Cain and kept at the specified place. The fire came and ate the offering of Abel. It meant that application of Cain was rejected. Now the marriage of that girl was required to be done with Abel. At this stage, fire of jealousy broke out in the heart of Cain. He said to Abel very clearly, “I will kill you, if you tried to wed that girl”.

Those people, who are frenzied of their wishes, they know nothing except that their desires should be fulfilled, and that the person should be driven back from the path, whoever becomes a stoppage in fulfilling of their wish. For this purpose, they use to conspire, flatter, give a bribe and threaten others, to such extent that, they never miss any opportunity, and throw every care behind regarding everything like evil, reward, lawful and unlawful. Cain adopted the same way too and threatened his own brother to kill him.  

Abel was a simple person, and had a civilized and unraveled nature. He said, “My offering has been accepted. Its reason is that neither I want to deprive any right of anyone, nor envy from any person, nor intend to quarrel with anyone. I keep myself away from the matters of mischief and disturbance. Allah Almighty likes the deeds of this kind and these are the tokens of pious and abstinent people. And it is determined Divine Law that He accepts the sacrifice of the pious and abstinent people”.

Killing the innocent people

Surah MAAA-‘IDAH (The Table Spread) – Chapter – 5)

 وَٱتْلُعَلَيْهِمْ نَبَأَ ٱبْنَىْ ءَادَمَ بِٱلْحَقِّ إِذْ قَرَّبَا قُرْبَانًا فَتُقُبِّلَ مِنْ أَحَدِهِمَا وَلَمْ يُتَقَبَّلْ مِنَ ٱلْءَاخَرِ قَالَ لَأَقْتُلَنَّكَ قَالَ إِنَّمَا يَتَقَبَّلُ ٱللَّهُ مِنَٱلْمُتَّقِينَ (27

27.  And recite unto them with truth the tale of the two sons of Adam, how they offered each a sacrifice, and it was accepted from the one of them and it was not accepted from the other. (The one) said: I will surely kill thee. (The other) answered: Allah accepteth only from those who ward off (evil).            
27.  Watlu  ‘alayhim  naba-‘abnay  ‘Aadama  bil-haqq.  ‘Iz  qarrabaa  qurbaanan-  fatuqubbila  min  ‘ahadi-himaa  wa  lam  yutaqabbal  minal-‘aakhar.  Qaala  la-‘aqtulunnak.  Qaala  ‘innamaa  yataqabba-lUllaahu  minal-Mutta-qiin.

    Commentary

‘’Utlu – (recite, cause to hear by reciting), it is from tilaawat, which means, “reciting, reading, meditation”. Here it aims “to inform, to communicate, to signify). 

‘Abnay – (two sons), it is plural of ‘ibn. According to actual word, it should be ‘abnayn. But due to composition of the word after it i.e. Adam, the last “n” has been dropped. 

Qarrabaa – (they both offered), it is plural of qarraba, which is from taqriib. Taqriib means ‘nearness’. Taqarrab means “to put something near, to offer, to present”. 

Qurbaan – (a present, a tribute, a contribution), a thing, which is presented to obtain one’s kindness, it is called “dedication” also. 

‘Al-Mutta-qiin – (those persons, who ward off evils), it is plural of Muttaqii, which has been derived from Taqwaa. Taqwaa means “warding off evils due to fear of Allah Almighty.

In the previous Chapters, particularly in Suratul-Baqarah, many evils and wicked deeds of the Children of Israel have been described. They used to slay their Prophets and Messengers (peace be upon Them), exile their own people by quarreling and commit the riots of various sorts. Killing, fighting, quarreling, brawling and riot had become their common habits. But when they were commanded to fight properly against their enemies, then they gave a point blank refusal, as it was mentioned in the previous section.

In this section, it has been caused to understand by telling a tale regarding two sons of Prophet Adam (peace be upon Him) i.e. Abel and Cain, that it is very bad to kill someone and create any disturbance for own purpose. Refusing from fighting against the enemy (Jihad) is also bad. It is aversion and disobedience of Allah Almighty and its punishment is very severe.
