Punishment for the rebels - Quran Chapter 5 – 33b & 34 (Pt-6, Stg-2) (L-674) - درس قرآن

Quran Chapter 5- 33b & 34 (Pt-6, Stg-2) (L-674) - درس قرآن

   Punishment for the rebels

Surah MAAA-‘IDAH (The Table Spread) – Chapter – 5)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

33b.  Such will be their degradation in the world, and in the Hereafter theirs will be an awful doom-

34.  Save those who repent before ye overpower them. So know that Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
33b.  Zaalika  lahum  khiz-yun- fid-dunyaa  wa  lahum  fil-‘Aakhirati  ‘azaabun  ‘aziim.

34.  ‘Illallaziina  taabuu  min  qabli  ‘an-  taqdiruu  ‘alay-him.  Fa’-lamuuu  ‘an-nAllaaha  Gafuurur-Rahiim. (Section 5/9)

Khiz-yun – (degradation, disgrace, baseness), the word khiz-yaan is used in Arabic for the abashed i.e. bashful, humiliated.

This punishment has been determined so that the criminals are abased in the world. After it, on the Doomsday, they will be punished also very severely. Punishment of both places is for the reason that they broke the Command of Allah Almighty.

Punishments of the mutineers can be forgiven on the condition that, if before the time of their imprisonment, they have repented from crimes and admitted to remain obedient. And if they are sincere in their repentance, then even they will not be punished on the Day of Resurrection. Allah Almighty is Forgiving, Merciful. His name is Gafuurur-Rahiim.

It has come in the Sayings of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him), ‘At-taa-‘ibu  minaz-zanbi  Kamal-laa  zanba  lahuu, that is to say; the repentant is like such a person, who did not commit a crime. It should be understood here that the above mentioned punishments were for the robbers, plunderers and swindlers. Such punishment, which has been prescribed in the Divine way of the religion, for the criminals, is called HaddHadd of rebels is forgiven on their repentance. But if due to the above crimes, someone has suffered any loss financially or mortal, then the criminal would have to pay the penalty of that loss even then. That is to say; he would have to return the wealth, from whom he snatched. If he killed any person, then he would have to give the blood money (Qisaas). These are called Haquuqul-‘ibaad (Human Rights), which cannot be forgiven due to repentance. However, if the person, whose this right is, forgives, then it will be forgiven.

Punishment in the world for the quarrelsome - Quran Chapter 5 – 33a (Pt-6, Stg-2) (L-673) - درس قرآن

Quran Chapter 5- 33a (Pt-6, Stg-2) (L-673) - درس قرآن

Punishment in the world for the quarrelsome

Surah MAAA-‘IDAH (The Table Spread) – Chapter – 5)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

33a.  The only reward of those who make war upon Allah and His Messenger and strive after corruption in the land will be that they will be killed or crucified, or have their hands and feet on alternate sides cut off, or will be expelled out of the land.
33a.  ‘Innamaa  jazaaa-‘ullaziina  yuhaa-ribu-nAllaaha  wa  RasuulaHuu  wa  yas-‘awna  fil-‘arzi  fasaadan  ‘any-yuqatta-luuu ‘aw  yusalla-buuu  ‘aw  tuqatta-‘a  ‘aydii-him  wa  ‘arjuluhum-min  khilaafin  ‘aw  yunfaw  minal-‘arz.

Jazaaa-‘u – (reward), this word is used in Arabic language for retaliation of both words i.e. good work and badness. We use reward for good work and punishment for badness.

Yuhaa-ribu-na – (those make war), it is from muhaaribah, which means ‘to make war upon, to fight with’. This word has been derived from harb, which means war. It aims “to rise against lawful authority, to disobey the Divine law of religion, to rebel”.

yas-‘awna – (they strive), it has been made from sa-‘iii, which means “to move, to wander, to try”. Here it aims “those persons, who violate”.

Min  khilaafin – (on alternate sides), it aims “right hand and left foot”.

Yunfaw  minal-‘arzi – (they should be expelled out of the land), its form is that they should be confined in any far flung area.

The punishment for those people has been described in this verse, who break the Law of Allah Almighty that the people, who do not care the prescribed law of God Almighty, actually they make war upon Allah h Almighty and His Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him). Mischievous and robbers, who plunder by rebel the religious authority, can be of four kinds:

1.  Those, who killed someone, but they could not obtain the wealth. The punishment for them is that, which has been cited above i.e. ‘any-yuqatta-luuu- (they will be killed).

2.  After slaying, who have robbed the wealth – yusalla-buuu (they will be crucified).

3.  Who did not kill anyone, but they snatched the wealth only – their punishment is that, their right hands and left feet on alternate sides will be cut off (‘aw  tuqatta-‘a  ‘aydii-him  wa  ‘arjuluhum-min  khilaafin).

4.  Who had surrounded the people but before slaying them, they had become prisoners – punishment for them is that they should be confined in a far off place (‘aw  yunfaw  minal-‘arz).

Retaliation of evil committed by Cain - 2 - Quran Chapter 5 – 32 (Pt-6, Stg-2) (L-672) - درس قرآن

Quran Chapter 5- 32 (Pt-6, Stg-2) (L-672) - درس قرآن

Retaliation of evil committed by Cain - 2

Surah MAAA-‘IDAH (The Table Spread) – Chapter – 5)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

Cain was the first mankind who killed another mankind being awe-stricken from desire, jealousy and anger. Before Abel, no one was killed by any other individual. When in the world, once a door of killing opened, then the people began to slay one another fearlessly, even that it was felt that this practice should be stopped. And during their times; every Prophet and Messenger (peace be upon him) instructed the people of own folk and prevented them from slaying others.

In such a manner, other sins and evils would have been spread. When any person committed an evil, then following him, others began to commit the same. The tales of ancient nations have been mentioned in the Holy Qur’aan, “If any evil had been spread in one nation, then any other evil had been spread in any other nation”. The evil, which Prophets, Messengers (peace be upon Them) and their wise believers observed in their own nations, they tried to prevent the people from it.

Distinction of a big sin is that any person or entire group is harmed severely due to it. First form of the loss is tyranny and violation of one’s right. Second form is infringement. It puts the people in difficulties and their acts are hindered. These both evils exist in the murder because everybody has a right of living. To snatch this right from someone due to any reason is tyranny. Secondly, the people begin to run away, fearing one another and it endangers the mutual cooperation and friendly intercourse. It is called infringement and disturbance.

By killing, Cain spread both evils in the society and till the time of the Children of Israel; these evils had been established fully. Therefore, it has been described in this verse, “We ordained this rule for the Children of Israel to stop these evils, that none should kill any other. Remember! Murder of a person is just like killing the entire human beings, because it deteriorates the peace. And saving one’s life is equal to saving lives of all people, because everyone gets confidence of peace from it.

Then Allah Almighty has described, “Our messengers (peace be upon Them) have come unto you of old for your guidance, who caused to hear you Our commands clearly and they have clear proofs of their purity. If even now the people are involved in committing evils and they will not cease from using force, then they are extremely criminals. So, it has been mentioned in this verse that even on this, many people (it signifies towards the Jews) do not abstain from infringement. The Jews remained involved in killing and troubling the people always, even that they slew the Messengers (peace be upon Them). They did never mind to slay or trouble anyone. Even at this time, they do not refrain from oppressing, troubling the Last Messenger, Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) and tyrannizing the Muslims and using force against them. Really they have crossed all limits in wickedness and diabolical acts. So, they have become prodigals in the earth.

32.  For that cause We decreed for the Children of Israel that whosoever killeth a human being for other than manslaughter or corruption in the earth, it shall be as if he had killed all mankind. And whoso saveth the life of one, it shall be as if he had saved the life of all mankind. And Our messengers came unto them of old with clear proofs (of Allah’s Sovereignty), but afterwards lo! many of them became prodigals in the earth.
32.  Min  ‘ajli  zaalika  katabNaa  ‘alaa    Baniii-  ‘Israaa-‘iila  ‘annahuu  man-qatala  nafsam-  bi-gayri  nafsin  ‘aw  fasaadin-  fil-‘arzi  faka- ‘annamaa  qatalan-naasa  jamii-‘aa.  Wa  man  ‘ahyaahaa  faka- ‘annamaaa  ‘ahyannaasa  jamii-‘aa.  Wa  laqad  jaaa-‘at-hum  rusuluNaa  bil-Bayyinaati  summa  ‘inna  kasiiram-minhum-  ba’-da  zaalika  fil-‘arzi  lamus-rifuun.

‘Ajli – (the cause, the aim, the soul or essence), a mankind is collection of two things; the body and the soul. Actually, living thing is “the soul”. The body is living due to the soul. So, the mankind is soul in truth.

Fasaad – (infringement, violation, breach of law), trying to break a formed thing is called fasaad.

‘Al-Bayyinaat – (conspicuous things), it is plural of bayyinatun, which means “clear proof”. Here it aims “the matters relating to the Divine command, or the tokens about the truth of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him).

Lamus-rifuun – (the prodigals), it is from ‘asraaf, which means “to cross the limit, to molest, to violate”.

After describing the tale of Abel and Cain, now it is being mentioned that Cain (was the first mankind, who killed another mankind due to discomfiture of jealousy, rage and desire) opened the door of slaying for the entire human beings by killing Abel. Before him nobody killed anyone. After this bad act, the people began to slay one another unhesitatingly. Thus far that, the need to stop this practice was arisen and every Prophet (peace be upon Him) guided the people and forbade them from killing others.

Due to this reason, the Children of Israel has been commanded, “It is equal to kill the entire people by slaughtering anyone innocent without any ground and decision of the court, because in resemblance of one, others will be prepared to slay one another”. “And whoso saved the life of someone and did not kill although he had anger and outrage, then it shall be as if he had arranged to save the life of all the mankind”. A person does often that, what he looks being done by others. So, if anyone will do good works, in his imitation, others will also do good works, and if one will do evil, others will commit evils too by seeing him.

Wishes make the mankind blind - 2 - Quran Chapter 5 – 30 & 31 (Pt-6, Stg-2) (L-670) - درس قرآن

Quran Chapter 5- 30 & 31 (Pt-6, Stg-2) (L-670) - درس قرآن

Wishes make the mankind blind - 2

Surah MAAA-‘IDAH (The Table Spread) – Chapter – 5)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

Cain’s loss of Afterlife due to slaying his brother Abel was too much that the world has no value before it, i.e. he opened the door of sin in the world. Therefore, he would not be punished only against his own sin, but he would also be punished for the sins of others after him, as whosoever will slay or give pain to other humankind for his/her own purpose until the Day of Resurrection. It has been written that none had killed anyone before Cain and nor anyone had died naturally till that time. So, Cain was confused that what he should do with the corpse of his brother.

It has been described in this verse that Allah Almighty sent a crow in front of him. After landing, the crow began to scratch the ground with its beak and paws. The commentators explain that the crow brought another dead crow, which was hanging in its beak. It put the dead crow on the earth, dug the ground and widened it. Then it put the dead crow into that pit and leveled the ground by putting the dust on it.

Cain saw the crow doing this all. At that time he suffered woe that he had not sense equal to a crow, which buried the corpse of its brother (the dead crow) into the ground. At that time he would have thought, “This crow had so much fellow-feeling (sympathy) with the other crow like it that it took up the dead crow, brought here and hid it in the ground, while that crow had died naturally. Whereas, I killed not only a man like me, but I killed my own real brother intentionally, and then I had not even so much sense that I could save the corpse from the disgrace of rotting openly”. It manifests that He was not only more hard hearten than the crow but was also dull in comparison with it. So repentance and self-condemnation pressed him down and he began to grieve due to his bad work.

We can understand from this lesson that human body’s respect is till then it is living (the soul is in it). When the soul is out from the body, then the same body becomes occasion of shame for the human being, as it was a filthy and disgusting thing, defects of which were hidden by the soul. Therefore, the word saw-‘ata has been used in this verse, which means “bad and disgusting thing (corpse)”, for which it is better that it should be removed from the sight as soon as possible. Truly, beauty of the body is by the means of soul; otherwise, it is nothing except a handful dust.

Blessed are those people, who understand this fine point of their lives and do not entertain this heap of mud so much, due to which a pure thing like soul has to suffer punishment and disaster. Therefore, it has been told, “Leave the bodily pleasures and seek the spiritual Delight”.

30.  But (the other’s) mind imposed on him the killing of his brother, so he slew him and became one of the losers.

31.  Then Allaah sent a raven scratching up the ground, to show him how to hide his brother’s naked corpse. He said: Woe unto me! Am I not able to be as this raven and so hide my brother’s naked corpse? Then he became repentant.
30.  Fatawwa-‘at  lahuu  nafsuhuu  qatla  ‘akhiihi  faqatalahuu  fa-‘asbaha  minal-khaasiriin.

31.  Faba-‘asAllaahu  guraabany-yab-hasu  fil-‘arzi  li-yuriyahuu  kayfa  yuwaarii  saw-‘ata  ‘akhiih.  Qaala  yaa-way-lataaa  ‘a-‘ajaztu  ‘an  ‘akuuna  misla  haazal-guraabi  fa-‘uwaariya  saw-‘ata  ‘akhii.  Fa- ‘asbaha  minan-naadimiin.

    Commentary

Tawwa-‘at - it is from tatwii’, which means, “To show somebody any bad work in a good form, so that he may be inclined to do it.

Yab-hasu – (scratched up), it is from bahas, which means “to scratch, to dig”. That is to say; a raven (a kind of crow) began to dig the ground with its beak and paws before him.

Yaa-way-lataaa – (woe unto me), this word is spoken in Arabic language at the time of “heavy calamity, sorrow or an exclamation of grief”.

‘Ajaztu – (I am not able to), it has been derived from ‘ajaz, which means “to be helpless, not to be able to do any particular work”. Saw-‘ata – (a bad thing, to be displeasing one’s eyes), here it means “Corpse”.

The heart of Cain, which was becoming insane due to jealousy, desire and rage, guided him to kill his own brother. The person, who becomes blind due to own wishes, strikes nothing to him except that to trouble others for his own interest at every cost. Therefore, he killed his brother Abel, but its result was not other than his own loss.

Worldly loss was that he was deprived of his companion and helper like a sincere brother. It has come in the Sayings of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) that there are two such sins, retaliation of which are faced in the world too before the Day of Resurrection; one is “violation of other’s right”, and the other is “to trouble the relatives” which is called “breaking off the relationship (the kinship)”.
