Quran Chapter 5- 47 (Pt-6, Stg-2) (L-691) -

Act upon The Gospel

Surah MAAA-‘IDAH (The Table Spread) – Chapter – 5)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

47.  Let the People of the Gospel judge by that which Allah hath revealed therein. And whoso judgeth not by that which Allah hath revealed; such are evil-livers.
47.  Wal-yahkum  ‘Ahlul- ‘Injiili  bimaaa  ‘anzalAllaahu  fiih.  Wa  mallam  yah-kum-  bimaaa  ‘anzalAllaahu  fa-‘ulaaa-‘ika  humul- faasiquun.

Commentary

At first the Jews were told that they should act upon the commands of Torah and neither change in the acts for a little worldly gain, and nor they should hide anything from it.

The Jews refused to obey the commands in two ways: Either they removed the command from the Scripture entirely and said, “This command does not exist in the Torah”. Such people were appointed as disbelievers as per first verse of this section. Or they admitted the command but left to act upon it and changed it as they wished in accordance with their pleasure. Such people have been named as “the tyrants”.

The Commentators have written that there were two tribes of the Jews in Madinah, named; Banu Qurayzah and Banu Nazayr during the period of the revelation of these verses. Banu Nazayr were powerful, while Banu Qurayzah were weak. The order of retaliation did exist in the Torah i.e. that the punishment of any offence like murder, injury during quarrel or if somebody wounds someone else, should be given equally to all offenders, whether anyone of them belongs to a higher class or lower, is powerful or weak, rich or poor. But Banu Nazayr used to get life of human or property double in the form of retaliation or money from Banu Qurayzah in the haughtiness of being powerful, and on the contrary pay them half. So they are called tyrants and cruel in the second verse.

In this verse the Christians have been addressed, “the People of the Gospel should act upon the entire commands of Gospel. It is unlawful that their scholars did not care this command of Gospel (You should be obedient heartily of Paraclete (Ahmad, Muhammad) (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) and either they concealed it or began to explain it with some other meanings. Although, they had faith that Paraclete is the same person i.e. Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him), the Last messenger of Allah Almighty. Even then they rejected by tricks.

It has been described in the verse that such people, who practise deceit, are evil-livers and disobedient.

The Gospel

Surah MAAA-‘IDAH (The Table Spread) – Chapter – 5)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

46.  And We caused Jesus son of Mary, to follow in their footsteps,  confirming that which was (revealed) before him in the Torah, and We bestowed on him the Gospel wherein is Guidance and a Light, confirming that which was (revealed) before it in the Torah – and a Guidance and an Admonition unto those who ward off (evil).
46.  Wa  qaf-fayNaa  ‘alaaa  ‘aasaa-rihim-  bi-‘Iisabni  Maryama  Musaddiqal-limaa  bayna  yadayhi  minat-Tawraah;  wa  ‘aatayNaahul-  ‘Injiila  fiihi  Hudanw-wa  Nuurunw-wa  musaddiqal-limaa  bayna  yadayhi  minat-Tawraati  wa  Hudanw-wa  Maw-‘izatal-lil-Muttaqiin.

Commentary

Qaf-fayNaa – (We caused to follow in), it is from taqfiyah, which has been derived from qafaaQafaa means “the nape of the neck”. Taqfiyah means “To send another person, who follows him, who was sent earlier”.

Maa  bayna  yadayhi – that which was between his two hands (It is an Arabic proverb), the thing, which has come into existence earlier than any person or thing. Here it aims the Torah which was revealed before Jesus (peace be upon Him) and Gospel.

It has been being described by Allah Almighty from the very early, “We revealed the Torah and revealed in it the commandments about every matter”. The Prophets (peace be upon them) and the scholars used to judge the mutual quarrels in the light of these commandments. When they departed, the Children of Israel did cast the commandments behind their back and did not care. The punishment of stoning was removed totally; it was the reason that the Jews were Infidels, because they denied the commandment of Allah Almighty. Although they kept the commandment of “retaliation” in order but gave up acting upon it and the powerful people began to take the retaliation in manifolds from the weak and the poor. In this regard the Jews were tyrants, that, when a person of higher class was killed by any person from any lower class, then in retaliation, his two, three or more close relatives were used to slay. And if any person from a higher class used to kill any person from a lower class, he was not punished properly. Like this, the same manner was in business and money dealing, that the powerful used to receive much, more money from the weak and did not pay his right properly.

According to this verse, Jesus (peace be upon Him) came, following the footsteps of those Prophets who surrendered (unto Allah Almighty), gave instructions to the Jews, and the same did the rabbis and the priests for they were the custodians and witnesses of Allah’s Scripture, and He (peace be upon Him) confirmed that which was revealed before Him in the Torah. And the Gospel, which was revealed on Jesus (peace be upon Him), also confirmed that which was (revealed) before it in the Torah. However, some severe rules were softened and some things, which were unlawful in the Torah, were settled as lawful.

Quran Chapter 5- 45 (Pt-6, Stg-2) (L-689) -

Commandment of Torah

Surah MAAA-‘IDAH (The Table Spread) – Chapter – 5)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

45.  And We prescribed for them therein: The life for the life, and the eye for the eye, and the nose for the nose, and the ear for the ear, and the tooth for the tooth, and for wounds retaliation. But whoso forgoeth it (in the way of charity) it shall be expiation for him. And whoso judgeth not by that which Allah hath revealed; such are wrongdoers.
45.  Wa  KatabNaa  ‘alayhim  fiihaaa  ‘annan-nafsa  binnafsi  wal-‘ayna  bil-‘ayni  wal-‘anfa  bil-‘anfi  wal-‘uzuna  bil-‘uzuni  was-sinna  bis-sinni,  wal-juruuha  Qisaas.  Faman-  tasaddaqa  bihii  fahuwa  kaffaara-tullah.  Wa  mallam  yahkum-  bimaaa  ‘anzalAllaahu  fa-‘ulaaa-‘ika  humuz-zaalimuun.

Commentary

Tasaddaqa – (to give alms, to forgive, to forego), it has been made from Sadaqah, which means “alms-giving”. Here it aims, “the person, who has been teased, forgives the sin of him (in the way of charity), who tyrannized”. It is his kindness; otherwise he can demand the retaliation lawfully. This forgiveness is alms-giving (charity), and his sins will be forgiven in its retaliation.

Another unreasonable matter of the Jews has been described in this verse. Allah Almighty says, “We prescribed for them in the Torah: the life for the life (the person, who killed someone else, will be killed), and the eye for the eye (who injured an eye of any other, his eye of that side will be injured and as much he injured, so much his eye will be injured), and the nose for the nose, and the ear for the ear, and the tooth for the tooth, and for the wounds retaliation is likewise he wounded the other. But the Jews did not use to obey this order. They used to show favor of the higher class people and by taking bribes, they saved the offender.  They had to commit that the law of Allah Almighty would be enforced and the criminal should be punished properly. However, whosoever forgives the offender himself and does not take retaliation, his sins will be forgiven. But the persons, who do not wish to issue the law for their own purpose, surely they are tyrants. The Muslims should take it as a lesson from them.

Advice for the Truthful - Quran Chapter 5 – 44b (Pt-6, Stg-2) (L-688) -

Quran Chapter 5- 44b (Pt-6, Stg-2) (L-688) -

Advice for the Truthful

Surah MAAA-‘IDAH (The Table Spread) – Chapter – 5)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

44b.  So fear not mankind, but fear Me. And barter not My Revelations for a little gain. And whoso judgeth not by that which Allah hath revealed; such are disbelievers.
44b.  Falaa  takhsha-wunnaasa  wakh-shawni  wa  laa  tash-taruu  bi-‘AayaaTii  samanan  qaliilaa.  Wa  mallam-  yah-kum-  bimaaa  ‘anzalAllaahu  fa-‘ulaaa-‘ika  humul-kaafiruun.

Commentary

Laa  takhshaw – (Don’t fear), ‘Akh-shaw  (fear) these both words are from khash-yah, which means “Fear, dread”.

Laa  tash-taruu – (Do not barter), it is from ‘ish-taraaa, which has been derived from sharaaa’. Usually these both words “Bay’ and Sharaaa’ are used collectively, for which, we use the word “barter”.

Saman – (price, value, gain), commonly it is used for the money, which is paid to get a thing as its retaliation. The word saman has been used in this verse for money, because actual need is to acquire the money here. Something has been given to get it.

It was told in the previous verses that the scholars of the Jews have made the religion a game. They either change its commands due to one little pretext or the other, or hide it for the only cause that the higher class people of the world remain contented with them. Or they may get some property and the worldly people obey them, considering that they are great. It can be so, if they judge always according to their desires. Therefore, they superseded the command of stoning and wished the support of Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him). They also changed the meanings of that glad tiding in Torah, which was about His (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) arrival and denied to believe in His Messenger-hood. In short, they ruined the religion for the sake of their worldly desires and did not value the Torah, such a glorious Scripture.

The Muslims are warned in this verse that they should not adopt this behavior of the Jews. They change the matters of religion due to fear of the people. “You should fear Allah Almighty only; keep away from the favor of anyone in the matter of religion and from avarice of property, that you judge falsely by taking bribe.

Remember! Those people, who do not judge in accord with the Revelations of Allah Almighty {which are of two kinds i.e. Holy Qur’aan and the Sayings of His Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him)} are included in the disbelievers, because they do not believe in the truth intentionally.

Quran Chapter 5- 44a (Pt-6, Stg-2) (L-687) -

The Torah

Surah MAAA-‘IDAH (The Table Spread) – Chapter – 5)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

44a.  Lo! We did reveal the Torah, wherein was Guidance and a Light, by which the Prophets who surrendered (unto Allah) gave instructions to the Jews, and same did the rabbis and the priests for they were the custodians and witnesses of Allah’s Scripture.
44a.  ‘Innaaa  ‘anzalNat-Tawraata  fiihaa  Hudanw-wa  Nuur.  Yah-kumu  bi-han-Nabiy-yuunal-laziina  ‘aslamuu  lillaziina  haaduu  war-Rabbaaniy-yuuna  wal-‘ahbaaru  bimas-tuhfizuu  min-  KitaaBillaahi  wa  kaanuu  ‘alayhi  shuhadaaa’.

Commentary

‘Ar-Rabbaaniy-yuuna – (the rabbis), this word is plural of Rabbaanii, which has come out from the word RabbRabb means Lord. Rabbaanii means “godly, who is of the Lord (chosen servant of God)”.

‘Ahbaaru – (the priests), it is plural of hibarHibar means “those who know and the wise”.

‘As-tuhfizuu – (the appointed custodians), it has been derived from the word ‘astah-faaz, origin of which is hifz and hifaazatHifz means “looking after”. ‘astah-faaz means “to appoint a guard”.

It was described in the previous verse that the Children of Israel are desirous to be saved from obeying the Commandment of Allah Almighty by deceiving. There is a praise of Torah in this verse that this Scripture, the commandments of which are being ignored by the Jews now, is such dignified Holy Book, which had entire necessary guidance for the humankind of that time, when it was revealed. And it had a such Light, with the help of which, many obedient Prophets (peace be upon Them), who surrendered unto Allah Almighty, conveyed instructions to the Jews for a long time, and the same did the rabbis and the priests, and they all used to establish the correct way of working because they were appointed as the custodians and witnesses of Allah’s Scripture. They used to keep it before their vision and due to their looking after, it was firm in the world, because there was no any such promise in Torah and Gospel as it exists in the Holy Qur’aan that Allah Almighty is Himself it’s Protector. Therefore, until the protectors of Torah, Prophets (peace be upon Them) and Allah’s servants lived, His Scriptures remained in their original form. When they departed from this world, then Torah and Gospel could not remain in their original form.

However, every kind of whole commandments did exist in Torah for its time, and even till now, those commandments, which have not been superseded by Holy Qur’aan, are current. It is the duty of those, who claim that they are Jews, that they should follow and do not change those commandments themselves.

Behavior of the Jews and the Christians

Surah MAAA-‘IDAH (The Table Spread) – Chapter – 5)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

43.  How come they unto thee for judgment when they have the Torah, wherein Allah hath delivered (for them)? Yet even after that they turn away. And such (folk) are not believers.
43.  Wa  kayfa  yuhakkimuu-naka  wa  ‘indahumut- Tawraatu  fiihaa  hukmUllaahi  summa  yatawallawna  mim-  ba’-di  zaalik.  Wa  maaa  ‘ulaaa-‘ika  bil-Mu’-miniin. (Section 6/10)

Commentary

Yuhakki-muunaka – (they come unto you for judgment), this word is from tahkiim, and has been derived from hakam. Many other words have also come out from it, like Haakim, Mahkuum etc. Tahkiim means “to appoint someone own judge, to produce own case before a person for decision”.

Yatawallawna – (to turn away), it is from tawallaaa, and its object is “they disagree to accept it”.

Mim-  ba’-di  zaalik – (even after that), it aims that “they have Torah, but even then they do so”.

The Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) is being informed by Allah Almighty that “the Jews do not come unto you really for judgment but they have any other aim for themselves in it, for instance; a severe punishment has been prescribed for a crime in Torah. They send the case of criminals unto you to be saved from that punishment, thinking that this Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) is illiterate (that is to say; has not got education via proper worldly method), so how can He know that, which is written in Torah. However He (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) is merciful, so will judge a light punishment. In this manner, they will cause to admit the people their claim that there is no severe punishment in Torah. Therefore, the offender should be punished lightly in accord with the judgment of this Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him).

An incident was happened that a man from respectable class of the Jews violated the marriage-bed of a woman. Both were already married. As per Torah, the punishment for them was stoning. That is to say; “Kill both of them by stoning, while they are standing in front”. The Jews wished to save them as they belonged to a high class. So they wanted to finish this matter by concealing the command of stoning, which existed in Torah and punishing them lightly like beating them with a whip etc. So, some persons were sent unto the Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him), considering that He does not know the punishment of stoning, which has been described in Torah. Therefore, He will judge to give them a light punishment. Those persons were told, “If He gives a light punishment, then obey Him, otherwise No”.

It has been mentioned in the verse “Surprising! They come unto you for judgment while they have the Torah, wherein Allah Almighty has delivered for them about this offence clearly. Then what does it mean, if they do not act upon that command?

Actually, they are deprived of Belief. Neither they believe in Torah and nor in Holy Qur’aan. They have made the religion a game.
