Quran Chapter 5- 51 (Pt-6, Stg-2) (L-696) - درس قرآن

Escape from the selfish

Surah MAAA-‘IDAH (The Table Spread) – Chapter – 5)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

51.  O ye who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians for friends. They are friends one to another. And he among you who taketh them for friends is (one) of them. Lo! Allah guideth not wrongdoing folk.
51.  Yaaa-‘ayyu-hallaziina  ‘aamanuu  laa  tatta-khizul-Yahuuda  wan-Nasaaraaa  ‘awli-yaaa’.  Ba’-zuhum  ‘awli-yaaa-‘u  ba’-z.  Wa  many-yata-walla-hum-minkum.  Fa-‘innahuu  minhum.  ‘InnAllaaha  laa  yahdil-qaw-mazzaalimiin.

Commentary

‘Awli-yaaa-‘u – (friends), it is plural of waliiWalii means “the best friend, the partial, the helper, the well-wisher and the confident”.

We recited in the previous verse that the Muslim nation is for introducing the commands of Holy Qur’aan in the world. There is no work of this nation other than it. When the nation of Muslims began to come into existence and prevail the Qur’aanic Law gradually, then the people of all around, who were interested in their own worldly gains and did not like to see anyone powerful than themselves, observed their clear death in the progress of the Muslims. So they decided, “It is our duty to oppose Islam until we are living, happen what may”. They were caused to know very much that Islam desires to teach the entire world a best method of dwelling. So they should not go against it. But bandage of selfishness was dressed on their eyes. They were unable to observe anything other than their own loss in Islam.

They listened to nothing. Their only purpose was, “The good should be ours only, whether any other dies or lives”. It was open announcement of Islam, “The good should be for all. Nobody can suppress any other. The entire human beings should live with kindness and goodness”. Accordingly, two big groups of humankind were born in the world forever; the Believers i.e. the well-wishers for all equally and the Disbelievers i.e. well-wishers for themselves only. It is the biggest difference between a Believer and a Disbeliever. The Jews and the Christians decided to co-operate with the Disbelievers (Infidels), whereas it was not expected from them, because they had the Torah and the Bible. And the Holy Qur’aan was protector of original verses of all former Scriptures. It could be hoped that they would be partial of the Muslims immediately. But it was happened that an evil spirit of selfishness rode upon them too. Moreover, these people became more selfish than the entire disbelievers. The history of the world is evident that instead of being partial of Islam by understanding it, on the contrary, they tried to mislead the Muslims also to astray, because the selfishness pulls the human being towards itself easily.

Turning away from the Religion - Quran Chapter 5 – 49b & 50 (Pt-6, Stg-2) (L-695) - درس قرآن

Quran Chapter 5- 49b & 50 (Pt-6, Stg-2) (L-695) - درس قرآن

Turning away from the Religion

Surah MAAA-‘IDAH (The Table Spread) – Chapter – 5)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

49b.  Lo! Many of mankind are evil-livers.

50.  Is it a judgment of the time of (pagan) ignorance that they are seeking? And who is better than Allah for judgment to a people who have certainty (in their belief)?
49b.    Wa  ‘inna  kasiiram-minan-naasi  lafaasi-quun.

50.  ‘Afa-hukmal-Jaahi-liyyati  yabguun.  Wa  man  ‘ah-sanu  minAllaahi  hukmal-li-qawminy-  yuu-qinuun.

 (Section 7/11)

Commentary

Faasi-quun – (the evil-livers, the disobedient), it is plural of faasiq, which has been derived from fisqFisq means “to disobey, not to care the law, to act like immoral”.

Jaahi-liyyati – it is the time, in which no religion was admitted and the people used to take it as their right to suppress the weak on the basis of their power. Actual meaning of Jaahi-liyyat is “ignorance” and it is also called “jahal”. The difference between them is that the word Jaahi-liyyat has vast meanings i.e. such a condition, in which the rule of personal desires is followed instead of any law. Such era was before Islam, so, that period is called Jaahi-liyyati – “the time of (pagan) ignorance”.

It has been described that in fact maximum people are such, who wish to dwell free from all kinds of restrictions. Their cordial desire is that there should be no any such person, who prevents them from their any kind of deed. And they have power to do as they wish. By establishing a powerful group, they keep others under their own control and obedience, so that they are addicted to pleasure and nobody may argue them. These people are actually animals in the form of mankind. They desire paternal and maternal freedom like animals, and wild law as “Might is Right”.

Tell them, “It was then, when the human beings had forgotten the entire rules and regulations due to their wishes, and had ran far away from their reality i.e. humanity”. They know who study the history, about the condition of two biggest and famous emperors of Iran and Rome before Islam. The powerful people had suppressed the weak as the powerful were like lions and the weak were like cow, ox, sheep and goat etc. The rulers used to command their public like slaves, even that they caused to pull their carts like animals.

Allah Almighty commands, “Ask them - Is it a judgment of the time of (pagan) ignorance that you are seeking nowadays? Now there is no darkness like a night. A Light of the Religion has been revealed. The entire Laws of Divine has been described by the Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him). And it is clear that there is no command of anyone acceptable by the Believers before the Command of Allah Almighty. If those people, who are disbelievers, desire to obey someone else or their own wishes, then they will be punished by Allah Almighty very soon due to their evil deeds and disbelief.

Justice and equity

Surah MAAA-‘IDAH (The Table Spread) – Chapter – 5)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

49a.  So judge between them by that which Allah hath revealed, and follow not their desires, but beware of them lest they seduce Thee from some part of that which Allah hath revealed unto Thee. And if they turn away, then know that Allah’s Will is to smite them for some sins of theirs.
49a.  Wa  ‘anih-kum  baynahum-  bimaaa- ‘anzalAllaahu  wa laa  tatta-bi’  ‘ahwaaa-‘ahum  wahzar-hum  ‘any-yafti-nuuka  ‘am  ba’-zi  maaa  ‘anza-lAllaahu  ‘ilayk.  Fa-‘in  ta-wal-law  fa’-lam  ‘annamaa  yurii-dUllaahu  ‘any-yusii-bahum-  bi-ba’zi  zunuubi-him.

Commentary

Yafti-nuuka – (they seduce you), it is from fitnah, which means “to mislead someone by seducing”. It aims that you should beware from their desires lest they mislead you towards the deviation”.

O Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him)! You are commanded that if the people of different sects (religions) bring their disputes unto you for judgment, you should not judge according to their wishes, but you should judge by that which Allah Almighty has revealed upon you i.e. Holy Qur’aan. These people are very wicked. They will offer you a heavy amount of bribes for this purpose and flatter by various sorts, so that you should judge according to their will, being seduced by them, and they may fulfill their wishes by imposing the responsibility on you (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him).

In fact, they offered a very heavy bribe that “If you will cause to succeed us in judgment, then we shall embrace Islam”. It is very difficult for a worldly leader to reject this offer, while his party and power can increase so much in a very short duration, which may be more than his thinking. It can be only a Messenger (peace be upon Him), who takes care of justice, whether his group decreases or otherwise.

Then it is commanded: If they turn away from you after observing that their credit is ruining, then you should know that their ill-luck has menaced them and shortly; they would be punished for some sins of theirs. Therefore, it happened.

Commentary

Shir-‘atan – (a divine law), shara’ and sharii-‘at are other forms of the same word. These all words have the same meaning “a Divine Law of the Religion”.

Minhaa-jun - (a traced-out way), it is from nahaj, which means “way, manner, fashion, observances, system etc.” Another word for it is “Maz-hab or Tariiqah”, a particular way in the Law of Divine. (Importance) usually the words “DiinShara’ and Maz-hab have nearly the same meaning, but actually the religion is a vast thing, but the Way, which is determined by any Messenger (peace be upon Him) for its enforcement, is called “Shara’’”, which should be spoken as ‘the Law of the Religion’. The wise people judge properly by considering thoughtfully in the Shara’. The collection of those thoughts is “Maz-hab” (the Religious Sect) and that is also called Fiqah (the Theology).

Allah Almighty describes, “We have empowered the mankind to dwell in the world as they wish. They have involved themselves in various sects. Every sect has made separate laws and ways for themselves and We have given them time, because We have to observe that whosoever goes Straight Way from them”.

Then Allah Almighty says, “If We willed, We would have made the entire mankind one community, but kept them on the separate ways for their trial. However, even then a particular sign of the Straight Path has been determined i.e. all useful matters have been gathered in it for the entire mankind. So if you wish to come towards the Straight Way, then jump up towards those useful advices, which have been prescribed for the human being. This world is place of a test, after death you all will be assembled before Allah Almighty and He will expose the reality and the result of your all the ways. The Holy Qur’aan is the Scripture, which tells about the Straight Path and the Muslim nation has been appointed to produce itself before the world by acting upon its instructions”.

Commentary

When the Last Messenger of Allah Almighty, Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) came to Madinah and the Muslims got strength due to gracing with the Messenger’s presence, then a great difficulty fell suddenly upon the Jews. Heretofore, they used to press the weak and judge their own and the mutual disputes as it used to come into their minds. Once, some respectable people came unto the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) from the tribe Banu Nazayr of the Jews. This tribe was very powerful. They had a strife against another tribe of the Jews named; Banu Qurayzah, who were weaker than them. Banu Nazayr said to the Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him), “We shall become Muslims, if You judge our dispute with Banu Qurayzah in accordance with our will, and many other people will also embrace Islam due to our very powerful impression”.

The Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) replied, “I shall judge with equity. I don’t need such Muslims, who embrace Islam for their worldly desires”. At this occasion, these verses were revealed, in which, the behavior of the Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) was appreciated, and the mutual relationship between the Heavenly Scriptures was caused to understand thoroughly.

Allah Almighty commands, “After the Torah of Moses, the Psalms of David and the Gospel of Jesus (peace be upon Them), O Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him)! We have revealed unto You Holy Qur’aan with the truth, which is the last Scripture and which confirms all its former heavenly Scriptures, and the entire necessary commands have been added in it for the future generation of the mankind. So You should judge the strife among them according to the truth, correct rules and regulations which Allah Almighty has revealed, and which have come unto You by means of Holy Qur’aan, whether they are the Jews or the Christians or someone else, and follow not their low desires deviating from the truth”.

It has been described that the Holy Qur’aan is a watcher and a guard over the entire Scriptures revealed before it. Really, the person, who thinks in its Words, finds all useful affairs in it which are necessary for the humankind. If any rule has been prevailed, but that is on the contrary to the instructions of Holy Qur’aan, surely that is a deadly poison for the human being. If that is not given up, then its result would not be other than the destruction for the human being. It has been proven from the world’s experience.

Act upon The Gospel

Surah MAAA-‘IDAH (The Table Spread) – Chapter – 5)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

47.  Let the People of the Gospel judge by that which Allah hath revealed therein. And whoso judgeth not by that which Allah hath revealed; such are evil-livers.
47.  Wal-yahkum  ‘Ahlul- ‘Injiili  bimaaa  ‘anzalAllaahu  fiih.  Wa  mallam  yah-kum-  bimaaa  ‘anzalAllaahu  fa-‘ulaaa-‘ika  humul- faasiquun.

Commentary

At first the Jews were told that they should act upon the commands of Torah and neither change in the acts for a little worldly gain, and nor they should hide anything from it.

The Jews refused to obey the commands in two ways: Either they removed the command from the Scripture entirely and said, “This command does not exist in the Torah”. Such people were appointed as disbelievers as per first verse of this section. Or they admitted the command but left to act upon it and changed it as they wished in accordance with their pleasure. Such people have been named as “the tyrants”.

The Commentators have written that there were two tribes of the Jews in Madinah, named; Banu Qurayzah and Banu Nazayr during the period of the revelation of these verses. Banu Nazayr were powerful, while Banu Qurayzah were weak. The order of retaliation did exist in the Torah i.e. that the punishment of any offence like murder, injury during quarrel or if somebody wounds someone else, should be given equally to all offenders, whether anyone of them belongs to a higher class or lower, is powerful or weak, rich or poor. But Banu Nazayr used to get life of human or property double in the form of retaliation or money from Banu Qurayzah in the haughtiness of being powerful, and on the contrary pay them half. So they are called tyrants and cruel in the second verse.

In this verse the Christians have been addressed, “the People of the Gospel should act upon the entire commands of Gospel. It is unlawful that their scholars did not care this command of Gospel (You should be obedient heartily of Paraclete (Ahmad, Muhammad) (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) and either they concealed it or began to explain it with some other meanings. Although, they had faith that Paraclete is the same person i.e. Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him), the Last messenger of Allah Almighty. Even then they rejected by tricks.

It has been described in the verse that such people, who practise deceit, are evil-livers and disobedient.
