Commentary

Allah Almighty is Owner of the earth, the heavens and everything among them, and is Learned, Well-Informed and Protector of all things, so He looks after all of them. Everything is indigent of Him. Only He is, Who fulfills all requisites of the entire creatures. He has made incumbent upon Himself to be Merciful for all and bestow them according to everyone’s talents, whosoever prays for anything from Him.

In fact, everything uses to produce its proficiency and capacity before Him every time at every place and Allah Almighty listens to its secret request and knows that, which anything is deserved by whom?

Here, it should be known that everything remains engaged in supplication every time, but this supplication is not verbal. Moreover, it is at present i.e. its state desires any new thing at every time. Sometimes, the thing doesn’t know its condition itself, but Allah Almighty knows: what the condition of that thing desires at the spot. This supplication of the tongue of that existing time is accepted every moment. But the person or thing, which supplicates by its tongue, demands sometimes such a thing, which its condition does not desire because it does not know itself wholly. It is the reason that the verbal supplication is not accepted many times. Hence Allah Almighty is called The Hearer and The Knower. Can any other be chosen as Helper, leaving such Allah Almighty, Who accedes to the wishes of all, but does not have any desire Himself?

It is commanded in this verse that “My sense is telling me as well as it is also an Order of Allah Almighty that everything should bow only before Him. Therefore, first of all, I bow before Him in accord with His Commandment. Allah Almighty has said to me, “Bow before Allah Almighty leaving all things and never believe in any so called partner to Him, so that other people also begin to bow, observing You {O Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him)}. If I disobey My Lord Almighty, then certainly I will suffer the retribution of a Dreadful Day i.e. the Day of Resurrection. I fear very much from that Day.”

Commentary

It was described in the previous verse that everything in the heavens and in the earth and whatsoever is among them; belongs to Allah Almighty, and He is Alone Owner of the entire things without any partner.

In the verse being discussed today, the same matter has been commanded regarding the time that everything whatsoever exists in the night or the day (any time) belongs to Allah Almighty. By amalgamating both verses, it meant that everything with regard to any place and time (everything at every place and every time) belongs to Allah Almighty. That is to say; only He is the Possessor of entire things. There is neither any partner of Him in proprietary of anything at any place and at any time, and nor the claim of proprietary (of anything) by anyone is befitting. Neither anything goes out from His Hold due to change of place, nor does any difference come in His Proprietary and Ownership due to passage of time.

While Allah Almighty is Master, Owner, Possessor and Lord of all things, then only He is Provider of all creatures’ necessities, because it is the responsibility of the Owner to look after the things, which are in His control. It is compulsory for Him to be Aware of each condition of the entire.

It is clear proclamation in the verse that certainly Allah Almighty is the Hearer of all creatures and the Knower of the conditions of entire things completely. It has been explained in the Sayings of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) in this manner that He listens also to the sound of an ant’s feet, which is creeping slowly on a very smooth stone in any hole. And it is the
state of His Knowledge that He knows the measurement of the entire water of the oceans, weight of stones of the entire mountains, calculation of drops of the rain and number of leafs of the entire trees everything completely.

After explaining this, Allah Almighty addresses His Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him): Ask them! Can I choose any protecting friend other than such Lord, Who listens to everyone and knows everything, Who created the heavens and the earth, Who provides all necessities, food and provision to every creature?

Neither Allah Almighty is needy of anything, nor anyone gives Him anything and nor anyone can give Him anything. He is the only One Originator of the heavens and the earth, Who provides food to His entire living creatures but is never fed by anyone.

Commentary

It was described in the first part of this verse that Rule of management in the world has been established on mercy. That is to say; necessities of inward capabilities should be provided immediately and punishment of the violence of Law should be left for the Day of Resurrection. The punishment, which is awarded in the world, is at that time, when law-breaking becomes common in the public, and following up the law becomes difficult for the good people also, whose competency desires to act upon the instructions of the law. So when the other people hinder in fulfilling their proficiency, then it is demand of the Mercy that they should be removed from the path of good people by means of punishment. It is the purpose that evil-livers are punished in the world, which is a real Mercy. Determined Day of complete and genuine punishment for the law-breakers is the Day of Resurrection. And if, it is reflected, that is also a straight Mercy, because aim of the Mercy is that everyone should be bestowed with that, what one deserves.

It has been described in the today’s verse that coming of the Day of Resurrection is incumbent, and the person, who dies, as it were; gathered for the Day of Resurrection. Thus, in this manner, Allah Almighty shall be collecting the entire humankind until the Day of Resurrection and every person shall be rewarded or punished in accordance with the deeds of everyone on that Day. It means that on the Day of Resurrection, the soul will be sanctified from the bad effects of all such works, done by following up own desires against the Law. The soul would be purified, and after its purification, it may be carried unto its prescribed place according to its Law. Certain un-lucky people will take very much time for purification from the effect of following up their wishes. If we rely on world’s counting, this period of sanctification, has been called as living in the wrath forever. it is the biggest loss of the soul that it would have to remain in the Hell always, and it is the punishment, that a human being did not believe in Allah Almighty and did not go Straight Way, prescribed by Him, and followed up own desires. There is no form to get rid of this misfortune except that one should not give any importance to one’s own impure desires before the Commands of Allah Almighty (one should act upon His entire Commands). Such people will live always in rest and pleasure.

Commentary

It was suggested to the disbelievers in the previous verses: Know by means of history and by traveling in the land, the consequence of those people, who rejected Allah Almighty and His Laws. The correct way has been described in this verse about concluding the consequence from the incidents i.e. the person, who will consider thoughtfully in to the previous and present circumstances of the world, the first question, which will rise in his heart is, “Who is the Master and the Manager of this world?” He will find in the history that some revolted people claimed during their own times that they were masters themselves of the world, and after transgressing for a short time, they were ruined. The travelers can know their consequences by observing their signs and tumbled down buildings etc.

Then it can be asked: Why does Allah Almighty not punish the evil doers by holding their ears immediately, if He is the Master of entire creatures? Answering to this question, it is commanded: Allah Almighty i.e. the Master of the entire creatures has established a basic rule for the management of the world. As long the world is to be preserved, a separate code of life and the life’s course will be fixed for every kind of creature according to its creation. Its basic rule is Mercy. The meanings of “the Mercy” have been explained in the first Chapter of Holy Qur’aan “’Al-Faatihah” (The Opening). Here, it is compulsory to understand that every kind of the creature has its separate internal competency. There is a Rule to train this ability and make it useful. It is the demand of every creature’s internal proficiency that everything should be provided like independence and it’s necessities for its growth and usefulness. The Law desires that the person/creature, which breaks it, should be punished properly. But the Mercy wishes that, wherever, there is a shove between independence of competency and the Law, there, the matter should be overlooked. That is to say; the necessity should be fulfilled. Full punishment for breaking the law should be given on the Day of Resurrection, although some punishment is given even in this world advisedly.

11.  Say (unto the disbelievers): Travel in the land, and see the nature of the consequence for the rejecters!
11.  Qul  siiruu  fil-‘arzi  summan-zuruu  kayfa  kaana  ‘aaqibatul- mukazzibiin.

Commentary

It was explained in the previous verse that after creating the heavens, the earth and all creatures among them, Allah Almighty created the humankind and commanded them that they were allowed to use these things. But some things out of them were determined injurious for the people. Therefore, they would have to bring these things in use under specific rules and customs, so that, they may be saved from bad effects of these things.

It is desirable to understand that your Creator, the Creator of the entire things and the Maker of Law for your life is One – Allah Almighty. Any tranquility of your works cannot be set without knowing Him. Allah Almighty has established Revelations and tokens, so that you may know Him and acknowledge His Laws.

This Scripture of Allah Almighty (Holy Qur’aan) is such a Token, which causes to draw your attention towards the entire keepsakes and witnesses that Allah Almighty and His Laws are certainly true.

It is a Token of the truth of Allah’s Law that from the beginning of the world until now, that person was surely destroyed, who broke this Law and committed against it. It was commanded in the previous verses: Keep in view the history. Many generations were established in the earth and were destroyed. They were more powerful and rich than you. Then what was the cause of their destruction? You can know, if meditate, that actual reason of their destruction was that they broke the Law of Allah Almighty and followed their own wishes.

It has been ordained in this verse that you should travel in the land, see the nature of the consequence for the rejecters and take warning from the ruined tokens of ancient nations observingly. Understand carefully that the consequence of wicked deeds is bad always. The object of history, which was described in the previous verses, the same aim has been mentioned in this verse in the form of “traveling in the land”. That is to say;

1.    Getting advice by observing the consequence of those people, who disbelieved in Allah Almighty and falsified His Messengers (peace be upon Them).

2.    Following His Law and trying to cause other people to follow.

As many calamities suffered by the generations of the world, those entire were due to their own evil deeds. Its clear proof is that, even which ill happened, that was fall upon them, who were running behind their desires like uncontrolled refractory, and the convincers were either no more residual, or the people had pressed them very badly. No such instance exists in the world that any nation believes in Oneness of God Almighty and goes His prescribed Path, but is ruined by any heavenly or earthly mishap all at once.

9.  And if We had thus appointed Him (Our Messenger) an angel, We assuredly would have made him (as) a man (that he might speak to men); and thus We would have confused them in matter wherein they are now confused.

10.  And certainly Messengers (of Allah) have been derided before Thee, but that whereat they scoffed surrounded such of them as did deride.
9.  Wa  law  ja-‘alNaahu  malakal-laja-‘al-Naahu  rajulanw-wa  la-labas-Naa  ‘alay-himmaa  yal-bisuun.

Commentary

There is a description in this verse about the appearance of an Angel (peace be upon Him) in the form of a man, and actually it is the form, in which, an Angel (peace be upon Him) can guide the human being. But it is not useful, because: How will they know that it is an Angel, whereas outward form of the Angel would be of a man? How will they then believe that He is an Angel, not a man? They will say even at that time too, that if the Angel had come, then we would have believed, as they are saying now.

It is commanded: If We send down an Angel to guide them, even then, He (peace be upon Him) can do His work only in the form of a man. When He (peace be upon Him) will come in to them and dwell among them like a man, due to this reason, even at that time, they will have a chance to say: We would have believed, if it were an Angel. They would have pretended not to believe, even at that time, as they are evading now.

Next, it is commanded that in fact, believing in the Messengers (peace be upon Them) is not acceptable to them. Even they deride them (peace be upon Them) and do not give any importance to their teachings. O Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him)! It is not any new matter for them. Certainly before You, the Messengers (peace be upon Them) of their own times, have been derided, but it was their result that whereat they scoffed, surrounded such of them as did deride, that is to say; those matters were proved as true, of which they used to deride. They suffered painful due to not believing. And the calamities of disobedience besieged them from all around.

These matters are being admonished to the people of Makkah. But alas! Even then, they did not believe. At last, they were destroyed and Islam got success.

Commentary

It was discussed in the lesson of previous verse that Islam does not approve to agree the people for embracing Islam by showing them amazing miracles. There is a reply of disbeliever’s question/command in this verse and the next to this verse, that the Message of Allah Almighty should be brought down by an Angel (peace be upon Him) before their eyes.

It is commanded that if an Angel (peace be upon Him) is sent down, even then, they denied believing by making evasions, as the fear comes from their perverseness, then it would not be good for them, because it is impossible that they may live safe and sound for a sometime as disbelievers after arrival of the Angel (peace be upon Him) before them. At that time, if they will disbelieve, they will be destroyed without any further delay. There will be no form of postponement of their destruction.

Therefore, they should take it a blessing of Allah Almighty that the Angel (peace be upon Him) comes secretly only unto the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) and conveys the Message of Allah Almighty up to the people by means of Him (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him), value of which, these people do not know.

It is by the fortune of not coming the Angle (peace be upon Him) openly, that they are living still, notwithstanding their Infidelity and denial. And their punishment is being postponed. Otherwise, it is the end of the story, after appearance of the Angel (peace be upon Him).

There can be three forms of the Angel’s appearance:

1.    He (peace be upon Him) can come in His original form.

2.    He (peace be upon Him) may appear in the form of any natural sight, for instance; flood, earthquake, dust, a storm of wind or rain etc.

3.    He (peace be upon Him) may appear as a mankind.

The human being has not endurance to see Him (peace be upon Him) in case of His first form. Only the Messenger of Allah Almighty, Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) saw the Angel Gabriel (peace be upon Him) twice in His actual form, due to which, a horror prevailed over the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him). If someone else will see, his gall-bladder will be cracked due to fear.

In the second form too, if the people believed timely after knowing the signs and changed from past evils, perhaps they would be saved, as the folk of Prophet Jonah (peace be upon Him) was saved, otherwise surely, they will be ruined.
