Command of falling prostrate

Chapter ‘Al-‘A’raaf (The Heights) – Surah – 7)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

12.  He said: What hindered thee that thou didst not fall prostrate when I bade thee? He (Iblis) said: I am better than him; Thou created me of fire while him Thou didst create of mud.

13.  He said: Then go down hence! It is not for thee to show pride here, so go forth! Lo! Thou art of those degraded.
12.  Qaala  maa  mana-‘aka  ‘allaa  tasjuda  ‘iz  ‘amarTuk.  Qaala  ‘ana  khay-rum-minh.  Khalaq-Tanii  min-naarinw-wa  khalaqTahuu  min-tiin.

13.  Qaala  fahbit  min-haa  famaa  yakuunu  laka  ‘an-  tatakabbara  fiihaa  fakhruj  ‘innaka  minas-saagiriin.

Commentary
‘Ihbit – (Go down), it is from habuut, which means “to go down – from a higher place or rank, to be transferred from one place to any other”.
‘As-saagiriin – (those who are disgraceful, degraded, contemptible). It is plural of Saagir, which has been derived from SagaarSagaar means “disgrace, insult, infamy, ignominy”. This word “Sagaar” has come - in Suratul ‘An-‘aam too.

‘Iblis (Satan) did not fall prostrate before Adam (peace be upon Him) when Allah Almighty ordered to do so and began to think. The aim from falling prostrate was that: I shall remain submissive and obedient to Adam (peace be upon Him). The Angels (peace be upon Them) comprehended immediately that it is the Will of Allah Almighty. Satan forgot the Creator and began to see himself. The same has been explained in this verse.

It is commanded that Allah Almighty asked the reason of falling not prostrate and said: While it was My Order, then why did you not fall prostrate. He (Satan) replied: I am better than him. You (Allah Almighty) created me of fire and him of clay. It is astonishing; what is comparison among fire and mud? Hereupon, Allah Almighty commanded: You (Iblis) disobeyed Our Order. Now you have no rank in Our Court, so you should go down. This place where you are - is not the place of living for them who consider themselves superior (proud) to others. You cannot show pride while dwelling here. Therefore, go forth. You are included in those now who are degraded.

These Angels (peace be upon Them), who were commanded to fall prostrate before Adam (peace be upon Him), are those, who are given responsibility of service of the works of the earth; anyone of them is appointed to control the air, someone is responsible of water, while charge of fire has been given to any other.

These are the Angels (peace be upon Them), who fell prostrate, but Iblis, who was created from fire, denied to fall prostrate. He forgot bowing before the Order of Allah Almighty and thought: Actual thing is clay in the body of Adam (peace be upon Him), which lies at the lowest place. How can it be that I fall prostrate before it?

The religious commentators have explained that the fire has pungency and lightness. Its specific signs are anger, inflammation, pain, heat and rage. Looking at Adam’s rank and dignity (peace be upon Him), Satan’s fire of envy broke out and he began to burn in his heart.

It was the punishment that He was rejected and accursed being disgraced from the Court of Allah Almighty. The root of anger and rage is pride and these are tokens of haughtiness. Iblis considered himself superior and at that time He could not think that His actual duty was to obey the Command of Allah Almighty too like other entire creatures. So humiliation infamy, disgrace and ignominy were gotten by Him.

Commentary

It was described in the previous verse: O Mankind! You were appointed as a leader over the entire creatures on the earth and everything was given in your possession, and powers and strength were bestowed on you according to its requirement. All those things were created in the earth, which were necessary to establish your life. You should use the powers to get those things. In the external world, the entire remaining powers are your obedient and submissive except One Power. More detail about it has been described in this verse.

It is commanded: We commanded the ingredients of the matter to be combined, for creating you, then by connecting them in configuration, We fashioned the mankind. It will come in the next Chapters that “Then We caused Our Spirit to enter into it, after that We said to the Angels: Behold! This is Adam, Who is father of the entire human beings”. Fall you prostrate before Him.

Listening to this command, all the Angels (peace be upon Them) fell prostrate, but Iblis (Satan), who was standing with them, did not partake among Them who fell prostrate. And his act of refusing separated him from the Angels, whereas, verbally, He used to say to Allah Almighty, “My Lord and Allah”, but because of disobedience, He was cursed and outcast.

The birth of Adam (peace be upon Him) has been mentioned earlier in the third Section of Surah ‘Al-Baqarah. It has been explained there that “Allah Almighty has appointed Adam as His Viceroy”. By choosing Adam as Viceroy, His children became viceroy too. This mention has been made in the last verse of previous chapter i.e. Suratul ‘An‘aam, and it has already been explained there.

Here, the aim of telling the story of Adam (peace be upon Him) is that the human beings should be acquainted with the enmity of Satan completely and be warned properly that they are most powerful in the world. They can inflect the things of the world as they wish by means of their internal virtues and abilities. Entire external powers are their servant and obedient, but one power has denied to be their servant and obedient. Because of this reason, it has become compulsory that they should be guided to remain attentive, so that they may understand that when they will spend their powers for their betterment, there is such a power, which will misguide through guile, by flattery and threatening, to spend their virtues, according to his instructions, as it might be possible, because of which they will suffer instead of reaping advantage. Therefore, they have been informed properly that they should not use their powers in accord with the commands of Iblis. He (Satan) is their enemy, who will try his best to ruin them. The mankind should use his powers according to the Commands of Almighty Allah, Which have been revealed in Holy Qur’an.

Commodities for living - Quran Chapter 7 – 10 (Pt-8, Stg-2) (L-929) - درس قرآن

Quran Chapter 7 – 10 (Pt-8, Stg-2) (L-929) - درس قرآن

Commodities for living

Chapter ‘Al-‘A’raaf (The Heights) – Surah – 7)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

وَلَقَدْ مَكَّنَّٰكُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَجَعَلْنَا لَكُمْ فِيهَا مَعَٰيِشَ قَلِيلًا مَّا تَشْكُرُونَ 10

10.  And We have established you in the earth, and appointed for you therein livelihoods. Little give ye thanks.
10.  Wa  laqad  makkan-Naakum  fil-‘arzi  wa  ja-‘alNaa  lakum  fiihaa  ma-‘aa-yish.  Qaliilam-maa  tash-kuruun.

Commentary

MakkanNaa – (We have established), it is a past tense, origin of which is Tamkiin and it has been derived from Makaan. Makaan means “the place of living, house, station, abode, residence, nest etc.” Tamkiin means “to make room for, to provide place for living, to settle, to establish. It means “to make someone owner of any station too”.

Ma-‘aa-yish – (livelihood), it is plural of ma-‘iishatun, which is an adverb from ‘iish‘Iish means: to live, to dwell, Ma-‘iishatun means “source of living, useful commodity, livelihood”.

From the beginning, it was being described in this Chapter that this Scripture has come as a precept for you. You should obey Its Commands and should not obey any other against it, because the disobedient have been punished before you and have reached recompense of their evil done, and they will be retreated on the Day of Judgment too, and the Messengers (peace be upon Them) will say all: We had conveyed Our Message unto them. Now You know better about them. After this discussion, the procedure of knowing the Lord Almighty has been explained before the mankind in this verse.

It is commanded: Consider thoughtfully! Who established you in the earth and made you too much powerful? Verily Allah Almighty established only, before Whom everything is bowing. Produce the claim if anyone has any against Him, so that he may prove his claim, but first of all, none has any power to sue such claim, however if anyone claimed stupidly, he will be ashamed and will get a drubbing, because he cannot produce its proof.

Listen! We have established you in the earth and produced many things useful for you and made you their owner and with them your entire needs of life are fulfilled. After giving you all such things, We made you king of the world (viceroy of Allah). It is your first duty that you should be thankful to your Generous and Benefactor. But it is observed that mostly you do not thank Him, and if ever you are thankful, that is a little and fictitious.

The aim is that the human being should think - looking his own dignity in the world, that, Who provided all this? It is the duty of his sense, and this wisdom is sufficient for him, which has been given to some animals also. The animals recognize that person, who gives them food and drinkable, and looks after them, and they serve him at their own as much as they can. From many of their works and signs, it can be known clearly that they recognize their master and feel thankful to him.

The mankind has more sense and wisdom than that, which is ordinarily held with the animals. It is not meant indeed that he becomes dead and gone even more than the animals in recognizing and being thankful to his Benefactor, and even does not understand that: I should be thankful to my Benefactor from all sorts and I should obey His every Command.

In fact, they are many wise people among the human beings, who recognize their Creator, Master and Lord very well, but so much sense has been given to all, with which they can know well efficiently that: None in the world can be my creator, who may give me so much power and strength and who may produce everything, which is necessary for me to live (except Allah Almighty). Certainly there is Someone Superior to the world, Who created me and gave me all these things. I should be thankful to Him only every time.

All deeds will be weighed - Quran Chapter 7 – 8 & 9 (Pt-8, Stg-2) (L-928) - درس قرآن

Quran Chapter 7 – 8 & 9 (Pt-8, Stg-2) (L-928) - درس قرآن

All deeds will be weighed

Chapter ‘Al-‘A’raaf (The Heights) – Surah – 7)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

8.  And the weighing on that Day is certainty. As for those whose scale is heavy, they are the successful.

9.  And as for those whose scale is light; those are they who have lost their souls because they used to wrong Our Revelations.
8.  Wal-waznu  Yawma-‘izi-nilhaqq.  Faman  saqulat  mawaaziinuhuu  fa-‘ulaaa-‘ika  humul-Muflihuun.

9.  Wa  man  khaffat  mawaa-ziinuhuu  fa-‘ulaaa-‘ikal-laziina  khasiruuu  ‘an-fusahum-  bimaa  kaanuu  bi-‘AayaatiNaa  yazlimuun.

Commentary

Mawaaziina – it is plural of mawzuun, which has been derived from the word wazan (weight). Mawzuun means the thing which is weighed. Mawaaziina is plural also of the word miizaan, which means “the scales”.
Yazlimuun – it is from zalama, which means “to seize and hold without right, to violate one’s right”. Violation of the right regarding the Verses is that those (verses) are not believed in (denial of the Revelations).

It was commanded in the previous verse that the people will be questioned on the Day of Judgment: The Messengers of Allah Almighty (peace be upon Them) had come unto you. Did you obey Them or otherwise? And the Messengers (peace be upon Them) will be asked too by Allah Almighty: Did you convey Our Message to the people? Then exactly True Reality of good and bad acts and deeds of the people will be manifested before everybody.

It is commanded that the weight will be estimated entirely and correctly. He/she will be successful and will get deliverance, whose good deeds will be weighty than other side of a pair of the scales, whereas whose good deeds will be light, they will face failure and calamity, because they did not act in the world in accord with Our (God’s) Guidance.

The aim of causing to understand from this verse is that no one can estimate the value of one’s those acts and deeds, whichever are done by any individual in the world, whereas everyone should examine every work of own before performing or committing it according to those Principles, which have been described in the verses of Holy Qur’an, and which have been cleared by the Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) significantly.

Nevertheless, that person who does not examine own activities according to the prescribed standard mentioned in these verses, but performs or commits good or bad deeds as one desires, he/she should know that an account of entire activities will be taken, and those will be weighed in accordance with the principles of these verses.

In the world, aforementioned prescribed standard is hidden in these verses. You would have to observe and examine before performing or committing any deed on its touchstone, but you did not try. On the Day of Judgment, these all verses, which are sources of testing the deeds, touchstones, standard and measuring instruments, will appear in the form of a pair of scales. And every individual will see clearly the weight of own acts and its value.

These pair of scales, touchstones and measuring instruments etc. are the sources for knowing the cost and value of anything in the world, so the Commands of Holy Qur’an will appear on the Day of Resurrection in a perceived form, which have been named as Miizaan (A Balance, A pair of Scales), so that we may understand it easily. This Miizaan is actually the Commands, Principles, Rules and Regulations of the Holy Qur’an, with which, we had to examine our deeds and works during our stay in the world. These will be formed there in such significant and feeling shapes, by which, none will remain doubtful even a little to know the value and cost of one’s acts and deeds.

7.  FalaNa-qussanna  ‘alayhim  bi-  ‘ilminw-wa  Maa  kunnaa  gaaa-‘ibiin.

Commentary

Qaaa-‘iluun – {(they) slept at noon}, this word is plural of Qaa-‘ilun, which has been derived from Qay-luulatun. Qay-luulatun means “to sleep at noon. There is another word “Qaawal”, which is used for him or her, who says something, and it is made from “Qawl”. But according to the Arabic principle, both words are spoken for “doer, operator, (gram) Subject. Therefore, its meaning can be known by reading the dictation, which is before and after this word.

Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) was commanded in the previous verse that He should terrify the opposite people that they should follow the Revelations mentioned in this Scripture (Qur’an). In this verse, condition of those people has been described, who did not obey the Sayings of God’s Messengers (peace be upon Them) and a sudden terror came unto them in the form of a raid, so they could do nothing to save themselves.

It is commanded: We have destroyed many townships because of disobedience, carelessness and negligence of the people; dwelling into them because there was no form of their being correct. They used to remain busy in games and play thoughtlessly, and sleep spreading their feet with comfort.

The terror of Allah Almighty came upon some of those people, who were senseless at night and it pounced some of them, while they were sleeping at noon. At that time they screamed and cried, made a noise of their expression of suffering, distress, pain and grief. Every one of them was saying nothing but that: Alas! Lo! We were oppressors and wrongdoers. We remained involved in negligence and evil deeds. We did not know that the consequence of our wicked deeds would be as it was. But at that time, the repentance was not useful.

There was no reason with them to be entangled in the negligence and committing sins before it. They were informed about the Straight Path. The Messengers and Prophets (peace be upon Them) had come unto them. Allah Almighty says: Verily We shall ask from all of them about it. We shall question the wrongdoers: Tell Us now! Why did you not obey the Sayings of Our Messengers (peace be upon Them). And We shall ask from the Messengers: Whether did you deliver Our Message to them or otherwise? Then We shall describe them clearly: We know your perverseness also as well as the state of the Messengers (peace be upon Them). Neither you were hidden from Our Vision and nor We were absent ever from you. Take it! It is the proof of your evil deeds. Now you will be punished as retaliation of your wrong deeds.

Commentary

‘Alif-Laaam-Miiim-Saaad – it is not one word but these are four separate alphabetical letters and one should recite them separately as  Alif. Lam. Mim.Sad.In the beginning of some Surahs (Chapters) of Holy Qur’an, some letters of alphabet have been mentioned, meanings of which have not been explained. But those are recited properly. Those letters are called “Muqatt-‘aat” (small cuttings and short verses). For its detail, please consult the beginning of Surah ‘Al-Baqarah (second Chapter of Holy Qur’an as it has been explained there.

From the beginning of this Chapter, it shows that there will be description in it about those disbelievers, who prevent from the Right Path and are disobedient. The world has been created on this rule that there are only a few people, who trust in them who speak the Truth, whereas maximum people oppose openly in the beginning. Some of them are such people, apparently who imitate stupidly but they are opposite heartily.

These three kinds of people have been described in the beginning of Surah ‘Al-Baqarah. The last kind of both people prove to be big teasers and troublesome. Such people afflicted the Messengers of Allah Almighty (peace be upon Them) as much as they could. Open enemies of the Truth will be mentioned in this Chapter. As it was revealed in Makkah, because the hypocrites did not exist in Makkah, but there were open enemies of the last Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) and those, who embraced Islam. Therefore, Allah Almighty instructs to His Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) in the beginning of this Surah that, this Scripture, which We revealed upon Him, is for the purpose that, the enemies and opposite people should be frightened by means of It, and those should be told their useful matters who believe in it.

If the people do neither listen to you (the Messenger) and nor believe, there should neither be any grief in Your heart, nor be sad and nor any hesitation should be born in Your heart to cause to hear the Holy Qur’an. You should continue frightening them with full faith from the punishment of their infidelity and wicked deeds by reciting Holy Qur’an before them unhesitatingly. And you should not care for that what they say or hear. There is sufficient useful stuff in the verses of this same Scripture for them who believe. They will reap much advantages from them (verses).

You should say to every individual: Come to me! This Scripture has not been created by any mankind. There is nothing self-made in It. It has been sent down unto you by your Lord. Don’t hear any of them to whom you have chosen as your companions and protecting friends. Your best companion, supporter and protecting friend is your Lord, God Almighty. Obey Him only and do not obey any other against His Commandment. Only He provides all things of your necessity. But alas! You don’t pay attention. Think for a while and count His bounties, then certainly you will neither hear any other, nor accept except Him.

This all was being described to the people of Makkah at that time, when this Chapter was being revealed, but in fact, it is an address for the entire people of the world, and Command for every era and every sensible person.

Quran Chapter 7 – Intro (Pt-8, Stg-2) (L-925) - درس قرآن

Introduction of Chapter seven

Chapter ‘Al-‘A’raaf (The Heights) – Surah – 7)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

This is seventh Surah in the  Chapters of Holy Qur’an. The time of Its revelation is the same and adjacent with Suratul – ‘An-‘aam i.e. revealed at Makkah, before the Departure (Hijrah) of Allah’s last Messenger, Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him).

‘Al-‘A’raaf means “The Heights”. This word is plural of ‘Arafa, which is used for “the higher place” as any dune, hill or mountain etc. The word ‘Al-‘A’raaf has been mentioned in this Chapter. The Commentators of Holy Qur’an have described that these are some lofty dunes and small hills, which are situated between the Paradise and the Hell, and those people who stand upon them, see clearly the Gardens in one side and the Hell on the other. This is the place where those people will be caused to stay, whose Goodness and sins will be equal in Grand Total on the Day of Resurrection. They will see those good people who will be entering the Paradise as well as those evil doers, who will be entering the Hell. At that time, when the Heavenly people would have been entered in the Heavens and the Hellish into the Hell, then decision regarding them (who would be staying on the Heights) will be judged and Allah Almighty will make room for them in the Paradise with His Mercy.

In the Chapter before this i.e. ‘Al-‘An‘aam, there was recitation of the Oneness of God Almighty and it was explained that the Creator of the entire world and creatures is Allah Almighty. Therefore, you should believe in Him and admit His highest rank and Holder of excellent position from entire things of the world, and obey His Commands. The people have reached this consequence by thinking in the great stuff (all kinds of creatures) deeply. Prophet Abraham (peace be upon Him) was ahead from all of them. After that, those entire Messengers and Prophets (peace be upon Them), who were born from His children and relatives, were convinced of the Unity of God Almighty and true followers of the Commands of Allah Almighty.

In this Chapter, those unfortunate living beings have been mentioned, who tried their best to prevent the people from the Path of Allah Almighty. In front from all of them is their chief ‘Ibliis (Satan), who undertook responsibility of Allah’s disobedience and gripped up His loins to divert the human beings from Allah Almighty at every cost. And this incident was happened at the occasion of the birth of Adam (peace be upon Him).

Then about those things, it has been described, which helped the Devil to seduce the mankind. After that, the mankind (Adam and Eve – peace be upon Them) were sent down on the earth along with their enemies. And it was managed that the Messengers and Prophets (peace be upon Them) along with His Scriptures and Messages would come to show the Straight Path of Allah Almighty, by means of which, those people will get guidance, who are fortunate. But to whom, the Devil and His disciples will succeed to misguide, they will be deprived.

Afterwards, events of some debut nations have been described, who adopted the devilish way. The Messengers (peace be upon Them) were sent unto them, but they disobeyed Them. At last, they were ruined for saving others from their imitation and impression. Moreover, the Devil allured other people also from the Straight Path by causing to understand them new matters and they were destroyed too.

Then it is mentioned that the Messenger Moses (peace be upon Him) was sent in order to extricate the Children of Israel from Pharaoh and his nation. He (peace be upon Him) disentangled them from Egypt and brought into the Holy Land to people. But they did not obey the Sayings of Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) and His Caliphs properly, and suffered from different kinds of calamities and dooms, which was result of their evil days.

At last this chain of Guidance came to an end on the last Messenger Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him). After His mention, this Chapter ends at “the Verse of Prostration”.
