Lesson from the folk of Noah

Chapter ‘Al-‘A’raaf (The Heights) – Surah – 7)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

69b. And remember how He made you viceroys after Noah’s folk, and gave you growth of stature. Therefore remember (all) the bounties of your Lord, that haply ye may be successful.

70.  They said: Hast thou come unto us that we should serve Allah alone, and forsake what our fathers worshipped? Then bring up us that wherewith thou threatenest us if thou art of the truthful!
69b.  Waz-kuruuu  ‘iz  ja-‘Ala-kum  khulafaaa-‘a  mim-  ba’-di  qawmi  Nuuhinw-wa  zaadakum  fil  khalqi  bastah.  Faz-kuruuu  ‘aalaaa-‘Allaahi  la-‘allakum  tufli-huun.

70.  Qaaluuu  ‘aji’-tanaa  lina’-budAllaaha  wahdaHuu  wa  nazara  maa  kaana  ya’-budu  ‘aabaaa-‘unaa.  Fa’-tinaa  bimaa  ta-‘idunaaa  ‘in  kunta  minas-saadiqiin.

Commentary
Khulafaaa-‘a – (viceroys, deputies, successors), this word is plural of Khaliifah, which has been discussed earlier many times. It has been derived from khalafa, which means “to be a successor”, and it is a sign of respect. Therefore it has been translated as “a Chief, a sovereign or a ring-leader”.

Bastatan – (expansion, extant), we have recited this word in Chapter two (Surah ‘al-Baqarah). It means “expansion in breadth, width, length and height”.

‘Aalaaa-‘u – (bounties), it is a tense of plural and its singular is ‘ilaa or ‘alaa, which means “bounty, kindness, favor and grace”.

Ta-‘idu – (thou promise, threaten or give good news), this word is from wa’-dun, which means “to say to someone: you will be given such a thing or so and so – good or bad”.

Prophet Hud (peace be upon Him) teaches His nation in this verse, an easy way of: How to know your Creator (God Almighty) and how to obey His Commands. And in fact, there is Guidance in this answer regarding The Unity (Oneness of God) for the entire human beings of every era. And Holy Qur’an has established it in the world for ever in the course of remembrance in respect of Prophet Hud (peace be upon Him).

It is commanded that Prophet Hud (peace be upon Him) said to His nation: Remember it that the people of Noah (peace be upon Him) before you, were most powerful in the world. You have been appointed by Allah Almighty today as viceroys of the earth at their place, giving you the same power and honor. Moreover, He has bestowed you more growth of stature, more powerful brain and body than that nation.

Think for a moment! Who has bestowed upon you these bounties and superiority, which you have been enjoying? Its correct reply is that these all powers have been given by The Creator of the Worlds. The Secret of prosperity and success of the mankind is hidden only in its acceptance.

The nation of Hud (peace be upon Him) said after hearing His words: O Hud! Have you come unto us to say only this that we should worship Allah Almighty Alone, forsaking and giving up the worship of those, of whom our ancestors used to worship? It is not possible for us. Bring up that from which wrath you threaten us, if you are true, we are ready to face. We shall never obey your sayings. Do whatsoever you wish to do.

Commentary
The people of the folk of ’Aad  accused Prophet Hud (peace be upon Him) with two charges:

1.    That is not a matter of common sense, whichever you say. Near to them, it was against the common sense that any such a program is produced against those customs and traditions, which have been established since long.

2.    If anyone is entirely separate from all other people, he should tell about that matter, which should be easy for believing that it is the truth. Otherwise, only claim without proof is able to be considered as a lie.

Prophet Hud (peace be upon Him) answers to these charges. It is commanded that Hud (peace be upon Him) said: As you say to Me a foolish due to the reason that I tell you about most strange matter, listen to Me! I do not say anything from Me side (at my own), but I have brought the Message of that Eternal Existent, Who is Lord of the entire Worlds, for deliverance unto you, He has appointed Me as a Messenger. It were foolishness, if I had told you such thing which I would have invented any new thing myself for my own purpose and then conveyed it to you. And in the matter, in which, you consider Me a liar, is not correct, because I was and am your well-wisher always, and I say to you only that command, in which, I see your Good. And even I explain that I have never deceived you, nor committed any kind of treacherousness, dishonesty or fraud with you. You trusted in Me always. While you know that I am not habitual of cheating you and fulfilling My desire, then why are you doubtful in this matter that I am deceiving you by telling a lie? Do you marvel that your Lord selects a man from your own folk, reminds you your forgotten promises by means of that man (Messenger – peace be upon Him) and warns you by obeying His (your Lord’s) Commands that you should get ready to be saved from the wrath of Allah Almighty, otherwise there will be no shelter for inattentive and careless people after arrival of the wrath and neither there will be any individual, who may save you. Only those people are saved who pass their life in accordance with the Guidance of Allah Almighty.

The people of ‘Aad tribe used nearly those words for Prophet Hud (peace be upon Him) too, which were used by the nation of Noah for Prophet Noah (peace be upon Him). And the same answers almost have been described by Hud (peace be upon Him) which were of Noah (peace be upon Him). Moreover, till to date, the same objections are urged upon the Messengers and Prophets (peace be upon Them), whereas the replies of those objections are also the same as those were during those periods.

Commentary
‘Aadin – it is the name of a very strong and powerful nation. These people were children of Iram, who was grandson of Prophet Noah (peace be upon Him). They lived in Ahqaaf, which was a territory of Yemen.

Huudun – (Hud), He was Prophet of Allah Almighty (peace be upon Him), from the children of Iram. Therefore, He is ancestral Brother of ‘Aad (a folk).

The people of ‘Aad were very mischievous and quarrelsome. They were physically very strong and tall, and used to oppress the feeble persons, engage them in hard labor and treat them like their slaves, and consider them like animals.

Prophet Hud (peace be upon Him) caused to understand them that it was useless to strut too much on own strong body and height. He said: Allah Almighty is more Powerful and Strong than you, Who brought you into being.

Worshiping the idols had become prevalent among those people and there was a separate demi-god for every work; someone was of the wealth, some others like power, honor and respect, gladness, health and cure etc.

Hud (peace be upon Him) admonished them: That entire has been given to you by Allah Almighty, whichever you possess. Therefore you should worship Him only. You should consider the weak and feeble people as mankind like you and not to molest them. But they were proud of their wealth and physical strength. They did not obey Him (peace be upon Him).

It is commanded by Allah Almighty: We appointed Hud (peace be upon Him) for the people of ‘Aad as Our Prophet to admonish them and to cause to mend their manners. He (peace be upon Him) said to them: You should abstain from worshiping idols. Those entire things which you possess i.e. wealth, health, strength and honor etc. have been bestowed to you by only One “Allah Almighty”. None other is able to give you anything. These demi-gods, whom you worship, neither they have any authority and nor omnipotence. It can be nothing by naming the lifeless things. None is worthy of worship for any individual except Allah Almighty. So you should worship only Him. Fall prostrate before Him only. Beg from Him and give thanks to Him only. Do you not wish to be saved from evil? Why do you disobey your Lord? Do you not fear His wrath?

When the people of ‘Aad heard this talk, their chieftains, by whom the tradition of worshiping idols was established, replied: O Hud! We see that Thou art entirely foolish because Thou desire to finish an established system of customs and traditions, and wish to establish a new and uncommon system. This matter, which Thou art going to produce, seems a lie entirely.

Quran Chapter 7 – 64 (Pt-8, Stg-2) (L-971) - درس قرآن

Consequence of the unintelligent

Chapter ‘Al-‘A’raaf (The Heights) – Surah – 7)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

64.  But they denied him, so We saved him and those with him in the ship, and We drowned those who denied Our tokens. Lo! They were blind folk.
64.  Fa-kazzabuuhu  fa-‘anjay-Naahu  wallaziina  ma-‘ahuu  fil-Fulki  wa  ‘agraqNal-laziina  kazzabuu  bi-‘AayaatiNaa.  ‘Inna-hum  kaanuu  qawman  ‘amiin.

Commentary
‘Amiin – (the blind), this word is plural of ‘amyun. There are two kinds of the blind people, the blind of the eyes, who are called ‘a’-maa, and the blind of the hearts, who are called ‘amiya.

Prophet Noah (peace be upon Him) tried His best to admonish His nation that they should know their Lord and worship Him only, and that there is none who have any power either to cause to gain their end or to arrange for them or to put off any kind of their misfortune, but they did not listen to Him carefully.

The rich and illustrious people of that folk said: Talking against the traditions and customs is a token of straying. We have been looking clearly that You {Noah (peace be upon Him)} have gone astray. How can we obey You? Along with it, they began to abuse and tease Him (peace be upon Him). And they began to say to Him: You are a malicious performer and a liar too. At last, their end (that, what happened with them) has been described in this verse briefly. More detail will be discussed in Surah Huud (Hud) and Surah Shu-‘araaa’ (The Poets) Chapters 11 and 26.

God Almighty commands that the people of Noah (peace be upon Him) falsified Him. It was the result that We saved Noah and His believers by means of a ship and We drowned remaining entire nation by sending a storm, who denied Our Revelations. Those people were entirely unintelligent and dull.

The Creator and Lord of this universe has fixed some rules and principles for this world after its creation, according to which some changes continue undergoing in its circumstances. The earth is a part of the universe. Uncountable powers and forces have been working in and around it. If the temperateness is observed into them with the Command of Allah Almighty, then the condition of the earth remains quite right. But if any force or any part of it overcomes upon the whole, whether those are rainy, flood or wind storms, earthquakes, drowning of any portion of the land in the water, becoming the dryness water or the water becoming dryness or falling beneath of any part of the land etc. the disasters keep on happening.

Messengers of Allah Almighty (peace be upon them) and His Scriptures explain that very early from coming of any great calamity, Allah Almighty warns the human beings by sending His Messenger (peace be upon Him) and the Scripture that if they wish to be saved from that disaster, then they should act upon His Guidance. He will save them with His Mercy.

Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) is last Messenger of God Almighty and Holy Qur-‘an is His last Scripture. We have been informed about all necessary matters until the Day of Resurrection by means of Them that we shall be saved from such misfortunes, which continue to come on the earth off and on, if we shall act in accord with the principles described by Allah Almighty.

But if you will disobey the Commands of Allah Almighty and give up acting upon His Guidance, then confusion of the heart, fear and dissatisfaction will make you more frightful. None can save anyone with management or plan against Allah Almighty.

Quran Chapter 7 – 63 (Pt-8, Stg-2) (L-970) - درس قرآن

Prophets (peace be upon them) are also Mankind

Chapter ‘Al-‘A’raaf (The Heights) – Surah – 7)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

63.  Marvel ye that a reminder has come unto you from your Lord by means of a man among you, that he may warn you, and that ye may keep away from evil, and that haply ye may find mercy.
63.  ‘Awa  ‘ajibtum  ‘an  jaaa-‘akum  zikrum-mir-Rabbikum  ‘alaa  rajulim-minkum  liyunzira-kum  wa  li-tattaquu  wa  la-‘allakum  turhamuun.

Commentary
Zikrun – (a reminder), zikr means “to remind” and that thing is called zikr also, by means of which, someone is reminded through a verbal reminder or a letter etc. Holy Qur-‘an is a Zikr too and entire Revelations of Allah Almighty, which His Messengers (peace be upon Them) brought unto the human beings, are Zikr (Remembrance). Because by means of them, those promises are reminded, of which, the mankind has taken promise from Allah Almighty before his birth that he will do as promised. And in which there is betterment from beginning to end for the mankind.

La-‘alla  - (haply, perhaps), this word discloses strong hope regarding happening of anything, which is called “Expectation”.

The Messenger Noah (peace be upon Him) conveyed the Message of Allah Almighty to His folk and said: I am a Messenger of Allah Almighty. Then He (peace be upon Him) described about the aim and mission of His work.

It is commanded that Noah (peace be upon Him) asked from His people: Do you say me a liar and consider it a marvel matter that the Revelation is revealed from your Lord upon a man, who is like you and an individual from you, and His only object is that He warns you by means of that Revelation from the consequence of choosing the way against humanity, and due to fear you should begin to escape from evil deeds, and then there may be a strong hope that you may find mercy?

Purpose of coming of the Messengers and Prophets (peace be upon Them) in the world has been explained in this verse. It is duty of the Messenger (peace be upon Him) that He should come unto the human beings along with the Message of Allah Almighty, as well as He should also be a mankind. The Prophets’ physical and spiritual powers have this balance and equilibrium that with those powers; They (peace be upon Them) become able to guide other entire people. This balance and equilibrium in the Messenger is natural and by birth. Any effort or profession of any individual has no access in it.

The Messenger (peace be upon Him) is an example of good conduct for the human beings of the world. He does never commit any such work which is harmful for the mankind. His only job is to frighten the people from the retaliation of evil deeds.

Only that individual can forbid any person from doing bad who saves himself from it, otherwise his personal deeds falsify his own sayings. Then how would his conversation be useful? Certainly those people will begin to be saved from wicked deeds due to the warning of a Messenger (peace be upon Him) who are sensible. And they will deserve the Mercy of Allah Almighty. The sign of God’s kindness in the world is that Rule of Safety and Peace is established everywhere and the heart of everyone are satisfied. Nobody afflicts any other. The people feel happiness when they perform good work and support one another to become good.

Commentary
Allah Almighty commands that Prophet Noah (peace be upon Him) said to the chieftains of His nation (who related to Him: Lo! We see thee surely in manifest error). The words of Noah for replying to them; are: Neither there is any defect in my sense and nor I have gone astray. The only matter is that I am a Messenger from the Lord of the Worlds, Who is your Lord too as well as of mine.

I convey unto you the messages of my Lord, am your well-wisher and desire heartily that your condition should be right, so that you may be saved from destruction and ruin. Allah Almighty has revealed unto Me the matters, from which you are unaware.

We came to know some very important matters from the answer of the Messenger Noah (peace be upon Him):

1.    The Messenger of Allah Almighty discloses such Revelations which are not understandable by those people who have been entangled in false traditions and customs of the world and who are lovers of their personal benefits. They consider many of instructions against their existing expedience, because the base of those commands lie on such foreseeing matters, from which these miserly people are free. Therefore, they decide regarding the Messengers (peace be upon Them) that They are not on the Straight Path (God forbid).

2.    Although the sense of many people is not sufficient for knowing the Revelations manifested by the Messenger (peace be upon Him), but everyone can observe oneself some such qualities into Their personality by meditating, which would be sufficient to assure that such kind of individual can never be a liar or dishonest. The Messenger (peace be upon Him) acts and behaves in such a way that everybody can believe that He is true (provided that the observer is a fair player).

Any Messenger (peace be upon Him) is known by some peculiarities:

·         He (peace be upon Him) claims: I am a Messenger of the Lord of the Worlds Who brings up every living being. Therefore, His manners are highest.

·         He informs the people about such things which are useful for the entire humanity and pure from selfishness. So He does not demand anything for Himself from the people and dwells usually in poverty.

·         His teachings are full of human sympathy and good-will.

·         He was never pupil or disciple of any human being. Allah Almighty teaches Him directly such Words which are not known by any other person. That Individual who has these qualities, we should accept His Guidance and act upon the Commands delivered by Him (peace be upon Him).
