49.  When the hypocrites and those in whose hearts is a disease said: Their religion hath deluded these. And whoso putteth his trust in Allah (will find that) lo! Allah is Mighty, Wise.
49.  ‘Iz  yaquulul-Munaafi-quuna  wallaziina  fii  quluubi-him-  marazun  garra  haaa-‘ulaaa-‘i   Diinuhum.  Wa  many-yata-wakkal ‘alAllaahi  fa-‘innAllaaha  ‘Aziizun  Hakiim.

Commentary

Munaafi-quuna – this word is plural of munaafiq, which means hypocrites. Mention about the hypocrites has been passed in second section of second Chapter (Suratul-Baqarah). Such people are strong enemies of the community; and for the purpose of collective strength, it becomes the prey of a wasting disease due to them. These are the people who apparently speak mildly, but in the heart; they are bent on the destruction every time.

Garra – (has misled, played the trick, deceived and deluded etc.), it is a past tense from the word garuurGaruur means “walking with affected dignity on the authority of someone else, being puffed up with pride by flattery, to be taken in any unreal matter”. Wealth and property of the world, pomp and show, power and authority etc. are of a passing nature and frail things. But the human being trusts in them by looking their apparent ostentation; and at the end, he remains like penniless.

Some people consider the religion also such thing that there is nothing in it, needlessly, its stratagem has influenced some people by its false praising; and it is unknown “what they have considered it”.

Many hypocrites had joined the Muslim community. They were influenced of the infidels’ apparent grandeur. They used to say about the Muslims that they speak such things in the deception of the religion which are meaningless and obsolete. Where these handful hungry and naked people (Muslims) and where the wealthy and powerful groups of Makkah (idolaters)? Their misfortune has pushed them that they have been opposing them. In this verse, they are being replied and it has been caused to understand them the reality of the religion.

It is commanded that you have seen the hypocrites and those whose belief is weak. They say that the religion has deceived the Muslims. They must understand that the religion “Islam” does not deceive anyone. It teaches that you should have trust in God Almighty. You should know Allah, Who is the Mighty. He lacks nothing. Along with it, God is Wise too. He is Aware of the reality of everything. Whatsoever He performs; performs according to His own Wisdom. His obedient servants become free from cares; having trust in Him and He makes their all affairs good. It is the reality of the religion. What is delusion in it?

Wickedness of Satan

Chapter ‘Anfaal (Spoils of War) – Surah – 8)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

48b.  But when the armies came in sight of one another, he took flight, saying: Lo! I am guiltless of you. Lo! I see that which ye see not. Lo! I fear Allah. And Allah is Severe in punishment.
48b.  Falammaa  taraaa-‘atil-fi-‘ataani  nakasa  ‘alaa  ‘aqi-bayhi  wa  qaala  ‘innii  bariii-‘um-minkum  ‘inniii  ‘araa  maa  laa  ta-rawna  ‘inniii  ‘akhaa-fUllaahu.  WAllaahu  Shadiidul-‘iqaab.

Commentary

Nakasa  ‘alaa  ‘aqi-bayhi – (he took flight, he went back on his heels), it is an Arabic proverb, which means “Leaving everything; he returned and ran away”. Explanation of words: Nakasa is used in past tense of nakuus and its origin is nakas, which means “retrograde, step back”. ‘Aqab means “the hind part of the foot”. ‘Alaa  ‘aqi-bayhi – means “on his both heels”. It aims “he returned and ran away; due to which, his heels were at that place where his toes were at first, before returning”.

Exegetes of Holy Qur’an have explained that when the Qureish came forth from Makkah to terrify the Muslims, they were very proud of their strength. They did not fear anyone. However, they had enmity with the tribe Bani Kinanah. They were afraid of putting obstacles by that tribe in the way and distort their game.

Saraaqah bin Maalik was chieftain of the tribe of Bani Kinanah. Satan came in his face unto Abu Jahal and other chieftains of Qureish, and said: Worry not about Bani Kinanah. I am with you. Hearing this, the chieftains of Qureish had been proud. Satan gave his hand in the hand of Abu Jahal, accompanying him, he encouraged them and began to boast.

When the infidels came before the Muslims and serious fighting occurred, then Satan observed that the Angels (peace be upon Them) were helping the Muslims with full attention. As soon as; he saw this, he took flight by getting his hand released from the hand of Abu Jahal. That occurrence has been described in this verse.

It is commanded that when both armies began to fight, Satan took flight; leaving the idolaters and saying: I have no relation with you. Know your job. I cannot stay with you even one minute. I have been looking that which cannot be known by you. Being scared my breath is running out. No one can stand before the wrath of God Almighty. What the dare I have, His punishment is very severe. Today; I see that He is very enraged on you and His Angels (peace be upon Them) have been killing you with Their swords by His Command. No dear! It is not possible for me to stay here.

Commentary

Bataran – (boastfully), batara means “to strut, to give one’s self airs, to behave with boastfulness, bragging by someone after getting any good thing and misusing it”.

Ri-‘aaa-‘a – (show, to be seen of people, ostentation), it means “to work in such a way that the people consider it good, whereas really it is nothing”, that is to say; the individual, who commit so, either does not consider it good himself; or that is not valuable near him.

Jaarun – (protector), this word is used at many places in Arabic language, for example; a neighbor, that individual; who provides shelter, a friend, a supporter and a protector. Here it has been used for the last meaning.

It has been caused to understand in this verse that there is another behavior in the war which was adopted by the idolaters of Makkah. After describing about this behavior, God Almighty commanded that you should not do so.

It is commanded that the infidels of Makkah came forth to fight against you boastfully, with pomp and show, beating kettledrums and using musical instruments; being proud and haughty. The Devil was encouraging them and saying: Fear not anyone. I am your protector. None of the human beings can overcome you today.

The Army of the disbelievers was brought out by Abu Jahal. In the way, any individual said to him: That caravan has gone out of the range of Muslims, to which; you are going to save. You must go back to your home now. Abu Jahal said: We shall celebrate a festival after reaching the place of Badr for three days. He did not know that his berating deeds have been pushing him towards the mouth of his death and destruction place of his Army.

45.  O ye who believe! When ye meet an army, hold firm and remember Allah much, that ye may be successful.

46.  And obey Allah and His Messenger, and dispute not one with another lest ye falter and your strength depart from you; but be steadfast! Lo! Allah is with the Steadfast.

Commentary

Taf-shaluu – (you falter, be faded), this word has been derived from fashala. Fashala means “to become lazy, to feel weakness, to show cowardice”.

It has been described in this verse that the help of God Almighty comes at that time when a man shows courage, face the difficulties with steady and stability. You should remember Allah Almighty. Those people who are slack and good for nothing, impatient, nervous during intricacies and bewailing, they are not able to be helped by God Almighty. Those individuals, who have forgotten their Lord, are deprived of His particular help.

It is commanded that holding firm in front of the enemy is necessary for the Believers. Islam does not want to fight unnecessarily. It is a Message of Peace for the world. At first, It explained those common principle for the human beings, by accepting and adopting which, every individual and group of the world can live peacefully and even keep others living.

First object of Islam is to establish peace and safety for all mankind, but if wicked doers do not abstain from their mischief, there is no other form of removing corruption and mischief except fight, then it is compulsory for the Muslims that they must show utmost steady and stability, and remember Allah Almighty every time.

They should be ready to obey wholeheartedly the commands of God Almighty and His Beloved Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him), dismiss entirely their disputes with one another. Mutual disputes make the nation certainly weak and their strength departs from them. Humiliation and disgrace is obtained by them.

Afterwards, it is incumbent for them that they should never be confounded from troubles and hardships, be steadfast and stand still in front of difficulties like the mountain. God Almighty is with the steadfast, grateful and courageous Believers. He helps them at every step.

Commentary

It was the Will of Allah Almighty that a battle must be fought at Badr, because He had decided very earlier to uphold Islam and defeat the disbelievers. Besides this, He desired to teach the Muslims that the victory does not depend on more manpower strength, apparent excessive munitions, pomp and show. The heart of the man must be strong and full trust must rest upon Allah Almighty that before His help; more strength of enemy’s Army and having more than enough munitions are useless.

The idolaters were more in numbers. They had riches and were fully equipped with weapons and equipment. If the Muslims had known their actual condition, there was a fear of losing their spirit and courage. Therefore, at first, Allah Almighty showed His Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) in His dream that the infidels are few in numbers. Hence, the Muslims rose up with courage. Then, when both parties were face to face, there was a strange spectacle, which has been described in this verse.

It is commanded that when you stood still in the battlefield to fight against the disbelievers, even then, Allah Almighty did not let to manifest upon you their actual strength. In your eyes they were only a handful people, whereas they were threefold more than your strength. Like this, when they saw your people, they estimated that the Muslims are few in numbers.

It was the reason that both enemies of one another had courage that they would defeat the opponents immediately. They thought that it was not difficult to overpower the people who are few in numbers. Then the war began because it was decision of Allah Almighty that the battle would be certain and the power of disbelievers would be broken for ever by means of this war.

After that, it is commanded that Allah Almighty settles for every work. Every happening is submitted in His Court and that is done when He commands to happen. Would that the present Muslims have such faith as the first Muslims had. Due to this certainty, such power and courage is born in the heart which is unspeakable.

In the beginning of the battle, which the infidels considered that the Muslims are few in numbers, its purpose was to start the war. But when the battle began, the disbelievers knew that crowd upon crowd of Muslims were ascending. They considered them too much in numbers that it was difficult to guess their strength. It was the reason that the Muslims succeeded. God Almighty commanded in Surah ‘Aali- ‘Imran that the idolaters were seeing the Muslims double in numbers from them.
