“Jihad” is the trial of the hypocrite

Commentary

In the collective development of the nation, the Hypocrites interrupt as much that it is not committed by any other. Apparently these people show that they are with you (the community), also they remain ahead than others in acknowledging one’s superiority without understanding. But their hearts hate the collective activities. Resultantly, when any important occasion of congregational work comes, at that time; they desire to keep aloof from supporting the community by making lame excuses and evade in such a way, which cannot be given any importance by a sincere person.

They neither wish to provide any financial aid for public welfare works and nor bear any physical trouble, although they reap advantages of various sorts by the means of community, but keep conspiracy with external enemies against it. And often they persuade them that “Attack on our country, we shall help you (the enemies) and leaving the people of own country, we shall join you openly”.

Nowadays too, nearly every country is facing such people. And in the beginning of Islam, the Muslims had to bear many troubles and hardships due to this kind of people. However, because national and congregational balance was weighty, due to which; they were defeated; otherwise they had left no stone unturned from their side to ruin the Muslims. It has been explained in this verse that, what they did at the time of preparation for the Battle of Tabuuk.

It is commanded that their hearts were never with the Muslims. At such occasion, when it was demanded that they should sacrifice their lives and wealth (both) for supporting the nation and go forth, then their spirits were left and by making excuses, they came unto the Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) for taking permission to stay at home.

Messenger of Allah Almighty (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) permitted them considering that they were speaking the truth. Then they were very happy and began to say the people: Who have told you to travel in the deserts and forests during such hot weather?

Consider thoughtfully for a while, the entire nation is trying collectively to save their honor and name, and these people are thinking about hot and cold. Such people are selfish who prevent the nation from going forth, only for their temporary comfort and ease.

Belief is the Condition for Forgiveness - Quran Chapter 9 – 80 (Pt-10, Stg-2) (L-1220) - درس قرآن

Quran Chapter 9 – 80 (Pt-10, Stg-2) (L-1220) - درس قرآن

Belief is the Condition for Forgiveness

Chapter Tawbah (Repentance) – Surah – 9)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

80.  Ask forgiveness for them (O Muhammad), or ask not forgiveness for them; though thou ask forgiveness for them seventy times Allah will not forgive them. That is because they disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger. And Allah guideth not wrongdoing folk.
80.  ‘Istagfir  lahum  ‘aw  laa  tas-tagfir  lahum.  ‘In  tastagfir  lahum  sab-’iina  marratan  falany-yagfi-rAllaahu  lahum.  Zaalika bi-‘annahum  kafaruu  Billaahi  wa  RasuuliH.  Wallaahu  laa  yahdil-  qawmal-faasiqiin.

Commentary

The Hypocrites molested the Muslims very much in Madinah. These unlucky people used to stir the public against Islam. But whenever they were asked, they used to belie clearly. It was far from the manners of Allah’s Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) that he would have punished someone due to only doubt; without proof.

At last, when their evil techniques crossed the line, then it was revealed in the Holy Qur-‘aan for information about their (Hypocrites) wicked deeds. Therefore, mention about their impostures and iniquities have been running with effect from previous verses. In this verse, it is indicated that the Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) should reduce social relationship with them.

It is commanded that their evil habits have crossed the line. Supplication for their forgiveness is useless. They have been accursed by Heaven. If you ask forgiveness for them seventy times, even then Allah Almighty will not forgive them. What; if they claim before you that they are Muslims, they do not believe in their hearts. Neither they believe in Allah Almighty, nor in the Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam). They disobey the Commands of God Almighty fearless, and as soon as they go out of screen, deny the Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) publicly. While their hearts do not believe in Allah Almighty and His Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam), then which thing can prevent them from arrogance in Their Grace. God Almighty does not show Guidance to those people who disobey His Commands fearless.

The Commentators explain that Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) understood from this verse that it has been indicated that interaction with the Hypocrites should be reduced. Even then, when after revelation of this verse, Abdullah bin Ubayy died, the Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) prayed for his forgiveness and offered his funeral prayer.

Umar (May Allah be pleased with him) caused to draw attention of the Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) towards this verse. He (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) said: It is Will of Allah Almighty, forgive him or otherwise. I have not been prevented clearly, therefore, being a Muslim, I ask forgiveness for him. Then another verse was revealed; in which, it was prevented clearly. After that, Messenger of Allah Almighty (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) asked never forgiveness for the Hypocrites.

Sign of hypocrisy

Chapter Tawbah (Repentance) – Surah – 9)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

78.  Know they not that Allah knoweth their hidden secret and their whispering, secret and that Allah is the Knower of Things Hidden.

79.  Those who point at such of the believers as give the alms willingly and such as can find naught to give but their endeavours, and deride them. Allah (Himself) derideth them; and theirs will be a painful doom.

78.  ‘Alam  ya’-lamuuu  ‘annAllaaha  ya’-lamu  sirra-hum  wa  naj-waahum  wa  ‘annAllaaha  ‘Allaamul-guyuub.

79.  ‘Allaziina  yalmi-zuunal-mut-tawwi-‘iina  minal-  Mu’-miniina  fis-sadaqaati  wallaziina  laa  yajiduuna  ‘illaa  juhdahum  fa-yaskharuuna  minhum.  Sakhi-rAllaahu  minhum  wa  lahum  ‘azaabun  ‘aliim.

Commentary

‘Al-mut-tawwi-‘iina – (giving alms with open heart, being generous), this word is plural of mutawwi-‘un. Its origin is taw’Taw’ means “to perform any work wholeheartedly and pleasantly whether that is not incumbent”. ‘Ittawwa-‘un is another form of tatawwa-‘un, and this word has passed in Surah ‘Al-Baqarah.

Specific recognition of the Hypocrites is that they want to keep good their apparent conduct; so that everyone remain happy from them. And apparently; by keeping all people satisfied, they prepare extreme schemes of evil against any individual or people.

When their planning is disclosed, then they appease the opponents by wheedling. But they consider that they have kept them befooled, and their hidden secrets cannot be known by anyone. Only Allah Almighty is Aware of their hidden secrets.

It has been commanded in this verse that those people do not believe in Allah Almighty, because they are fearless that nobody knows their hidden secrets. While; only Allah Almighty knows that which is hidden in the hearts and they have denied Him, then from whom they would have to fear? Backbiting against the people should be their habit in such circumstances.

Therefore, the Hypocrites say about them who give alms with open heart that “They have lost their senses. They die for celebrity show and wish that they should be praised”. And whoever gives alms in accordance with his extent, they say about him: Applying blood on body, he considers “My name is included in martyrs”.

Those people should understand carefully that Allah Almighty has loosened them. He knows their secrets and consequently they will be seized in severe torment, but they have been deceived from apparent condition of the world and do not know that they have been cutting their own root.

Quran Chapter 9 – 75 to 77 (Pt-10, Stg-2) (L-1218) - درس قرآن

The Root of hypocrisy is stinginess

Chapter Tawbah (Repentance) – Surah – 9)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

75.  And among them are some who made a covenant with Allah (saying): If He give us of His Bounty we will give alms and become of the righteous.

76.  Then when He gave them of His Bounty, they became niggardly and they turned back, and they were backsliders indeed.

77.  So He hath put as a consequence hypocrisy into their hearts, till the Day, whereon they shall meet Him, because they broke their covenant with God, and because they lied.

75.  Wa  minhum-man  ‘aaha-dAllaaha  la-‘in  ‘aataanaa  min  fazliHii  lanas-sadda-qanna  wa  lanakuu-nanna  minas-Saalihiin.

76.  Falammaaa  ‘aataa-hummin-  fazliHii  bakhiluu  bihii  wa  ta-wallaw-wa  hum-mu’-rizuun.

77.  Fa-‘a’-qabahum  nifaaqan-  fii  quluubihim  ‘ilaa  yawmi  yal-qaw-naHuu  bimaaa  ‘akhla-fUllaaha  maa  wa-‘aduuhu  wa  bimaa kaanuu  yakzibuun.

Commentary

‘A’-qaba – (brought back), it is past tense, origin of which is ‘a’-qaab, which has been derived from ‘aqab‘Aqab means “behind, back etc. ‘A’-qaab means “to produce another thing after the first”.

A man named Tha’-lbah bin Hatib requested to the Messenger of God Almighty(SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam): Ask from God Almighty earnestly that He give me of His Bounty in abundance, so that I give alms more than enough from it.

The Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) commanded him: Spend for good works from that which Allah Almighty has given you already. There is no need to do more.

But he persisted. Then God’s Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) prayed for him and he was blessed with wealth and property; so much that he colonized a separate dwelling for himself out from the village. And falling under congregations and Fridays (prayers) was given up by him. When collectors of the poor-due (Zakaat) were sent by the Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) for collection, he evaded by feigning.

It is commanded: Some people are those who make covenant in the beginning that: If we are given much wealth, then we shall give alms. But as soon as they receive a Bounty, close down their fist. Its consequence is that God Almighty creates hypocrisy in their hearts. Breach of covenant and making a lie affects.

It has been mentioned about that person who afterwards; came being afraid; for paying the poor-due, but Messenger of Allah Almighty (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) did not accept it, and said: We are not needy of your Zakaat.

After the departure of the Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam), Abu Bakr SiddiqueUmar Farooq and Uthman Ghani (all three Companions – May Allah be pleased with them) did not accept his Zakaat. At last, during the Deputy-ship of Uthman Ghani (May Allah be pleased with him) he died.

Punishment of thanklessness

Chapter Tawbah (Repentance) – Surah – 9)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

74b.  And they sought revenge only because Allah as well as His Messenger had enriched them of His Bounty. If they repent it will be better for them; and if they turn away, Allah will afflict them with a painful doom in the world and the Hereafter, and they will have no protecting friend nor helper in the earth.

Commentary

It was commanded in the previous verse that these open and hidden enemies should not be relaxed, they must be threatened at every occasion, because their manners are not as such that they are permitted to do whatever they wish; or any favor is shown for them.

After that, their some devilish actions were disclosed that they falsify Islam abundantly before the common people, but when such news reach the Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam), they come running and say by swearing: We have never spoken like this.

Beyond this, when they heard that the Muslims have been coming back from (the Battle of) Tabuuk, they planned to blockade them in a hilly path by hiding their faces with shields; so that they may not be known, and assaulted suddenly on the Muslims, with the intention that; if possible; they should kill the Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) (God forbid) and finish all this story.

But those wretched people were defeated worse; and the devoted Companions (May God be pleased with them) of the Messenger fought against them bravely and compelled them to run away. Though they could not recognize them that who they were. Now its supplement is being described.

It is commanded that with the Grace of God Almighty and fortune of His Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam), their condition has been justified than ever. They have been enriched by Their kindness and dwell in peace and safety under the shadow of Islam. In return, these ungrateful people molest the Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) and the Muslims as much as they can.

In such circumstances, these inflexible people do not deserve any relaxation. They would have to know the Value of Safety and Peace. If they abstain from their obstinacy; then it is good, otherwise, they will be punished in the world and the Hereafter so much severely that they will be crying out, but they will have neither any protecting friend and nor any helper in the earth.
