Quran Chapter 7 – 152 & 153 (Pt-9, Stg-2) (L-1031) - درس قرآن

Cure of sins is “Repentance”

Chapter ‘Al-‘A’raaf (The Heights) – Surah – 7)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

152.  Lo! Those who chose the calf (for worship), terror from their Lord and humiliation will come upon them in the life of the world. And thus do We requite those who invent a lie.

153.  And those who do ill-deeds and afterward repent and believe – lo! for them, afterward, Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
152.  ‘Innal-laziinat-takha-zul-‘ijla  sa-yanaalu-hum,  gazabum-mir-Rabbihim  wa  Zillatun-  fil-hayaatid-dunyaa.  Wa  kazaalika  najzil-muftariin.

153.  Walla-ziina  ‘amilus-sayyi-‘aati  summa  taabuu  mim-  ba’-dihaa  wa  ‘aamanuuu  ‘inna  Rabbaka  mim-  ba’-dihaa  la-Gafuurur-Rahiim.

Commentary

Sa-yanaalu-hum  - (will come upon them shortly), sa - means shortly, nearly. The word Yanaalu has been derived from niilNiil means “to find, to get”. Hum means “to them”. Dunyaa means “the world”. Here, this word has been used as adjective and it is feminine of ‘adnaa. ‘Adnaa is an explanatory particle, that is to say; more close. These are the meanings of dunyaa. Only its form is feminine. It has been made from danawa, which means to be close, near.

It is commanded: O Moses (peace be upon Him)! Cause to hear them, who caused to make a calf and did worship it, that, terror and humiliation (both) will come upon them from their Lord in this world. Allah Almighty commands that He gives the same punishment to those people, who design new ways of worship and other matters, and include them into the religion themselves. And then, they consider it real religion. These people coat false over the religion and wish to make it a game and jest, so that; anyone may do whatever one desires, and then, introduce it as a religion in the public. Such people open the way of straying for the human beings and want that the religion should be subject to in obedience to them.

In Islam, there is no form of forgiveness without sincere repentance by such people. However, those individuals, who repented sincerely according to the prescribed rule of Allah Almighty and proved their sincerity and truthfulness and became true believers, then God Almighty will forgive them after such repentance and belief, and will have mercy on them, that is to say; they will not be punished on the Day of Resurrection.

The method of repentance, which Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) told them with the Command of Allah Almighty has been mentioned in Surah Baqarah (Chapter – 2), that; those people, who did not worship the calf, should kill them who did worship the calf. In it, both punishments i.e. terror and humiliation have been included. It is known from these verses that in Islam, punishment for the apostasy is “killing”.

150b.  He said: Son of my mother! Lo! the folk did judge me weak and almost killed me. So make not mine enemies to triumph over me and place me not among the evildoers.

151.  He said: My Lord! Have mercy on me and on my brother; and bring us into Thy mercy and Thou art the Most Merciful of all who show mercy.
150b.  Qaalabna-  ‘umma  ‘innal-qaw-mastaz-‘afuunii  wa  kaaduu  yaqtuluu-nanii.  Falaa  tushmit  bi-yal-‘a’-daaa-‘a  wa  laa  taj-‘alnii  ma-‘al-qawmiz-zaalimiin.

151.  Qaala  Rabbig-fir  lii  wa  li-‘akhii  wa  ‘ad-khilnaa  fii  RahmatiKa  wa  ‘Anta  ‘Arhamur-raahimiin.

Commentary

‘Astaz-‘afuunii – (they did judge me weak), it is past tense and its origin is ‘Astaz-‘aafun, which has been derived from za-‘afa. Za-‘afa means weakness. ‘Astaz-‘aafun means “to judge someone weak”.

Laa  tushmit – (make not to triumph over), it is a negative sentence and its origin is ‘ashmaat, which has been made from shamaatat. Shamaatat means “to be happy upon the trouble of any other”. ‘Ashmaat means “to provide an opportunity to someone to triumph over anyone”.

The Children of Israel desired to tease Aaron (peace be upon Him) themselves. Now, when they saw that Moses (peace be upon Him) was going to rebuke Him, they were happy. When Aaron (peace be upon Him) observed that Moses (peace be upon Him) was taunting Him before the entire people, He understood that Moses (peace be upon Him) was doubtful that Aaron (peace be upon Him) has committed negligence in His duty. Therefore, He explained before Him actual situation.

It is commanded that when Aaron (peace be upon Him) saw that Moses (peace be upon Him) was angry upon Him, He said: O Brother; son of My Mother! I do not deserve this reproof. Indeed, I was almost alone and I had not too much supporters and companions. Almost the whole nation was in one side. A weak personality can have no hearing. They suppressed us. Even that they threatened to kill us.

Aaron (peace be upon Him) said to Prophet Moses (peace be upon) that He told to His people: We have no choice but to be silent at this time. If we use force, infighting begins and the nation is divided. Then, because we are few in numbers, so the matter is dangerous. It is better that we should be patient until Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) comes.

These people were already trying to humiliate Me (Aaron). Even You also enraged over Me at first after coming back. How much would be these people (who are Our enemies) being happy from this situation that it was Good; Aaron was being rebuked? Make not them to triumph over Me for God’s sake and do never think that I am or was among those evildoers. We learnt from this verse that we must avoid mischief and riot, and wait for a suitable opportunity for correction.

Commentary

Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) returned toward His nation from the Mountain Sinai after completing forty days. Allah Almighty had informed Him already that the people of His nation had gone astray after Him and they had started worship of a calf, (idol) made by them, under influence of old mania.

As soon as Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) knew the latest news of His nation, He was enraged and grieved very much due to ignorance of His nation. In such condition, He (peace be upon Him) returned toward His nation along with the tablets of Torah and declared his anger and grief (both).

It is commanded that when Moses (peace be upon Him) came back toward His nation, He had effect of anger and grief (collectively) in His heart. No sooner did He reach, then He addressed His nation: After Me, you did not take care of that which I told you, when I was going. I made a responsibility over you that instead of Me, you should keep on protecting the people unanimously from straying, infidelity and polytheism. I see that you did not obey My Saying, and did let My proxy work be wasted badly by your negligence. Did I not cause to understand you clearly that I was going to bring a Law for you from Allah Almighty? After that, I shall bring for you a complete Code of life in accordance with the promise of Allah, the Most High. Till that time, you should not institute any vain discourse or ritual at your own and wait for My returning with patience. Which distress did you suffer that you did not wait for Me? You began to worship the idol before receiving the Commands of Allah Almighty.

After addressing the people, Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) cast down the tablets of Torah immediately, which were in His hands, seized His brother Aaron (peace be upon Him) by the head and dragged toward Himself. Anger of Moses (peace be upon Him) was not like other people, who are in a rapture, when they see marring their plan. He (peace be upon Him) had gone out of His reach due to indignation and enthusiasm of Faith. He had a strong probability that Aaron (peace be upon Him) had not performed His duty properly. This passion of supporting the Truth was actually excitement of the Belief, due to which, He cast down the tablets of Torah, pulled the hair of His elder brother’s head and beard with force. Neither there was any selfishness in it and nor the aim to disgrace Aaron (peace be upon Him), but it was a proclamation that relationship and kinship is nothing in support of The Right. It was the lesson which was required to be caused to understand the Children of Israel.

At last they fabricated a calf

Chapter ‘Al-‘A’raaf (The Heights) – Surah – 7)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

148.  And the folk of Moses, after (he left them), chose a calf (for worship), (made) out of their ornaments – lifeless image which gave a lowing sound. Saw they not that it spake not unto them nor guided them to any way? They chose it, and became wrongdoers.

149.  And when they feared the consequences thereof and saw that they had gone astray, they said: Unless our Lord have mercy on us and forgive us, we verily are of the lost.
148.  Watta  khaza  qawmu  Muusaa  mim-  ba’-dihii  min  hu-liyyihim  ‘ijlan  jasadal-lahuu  khuwaar.  ‘Alam  yaraw  ‘annahuu  laa  yukalli-muhum  wa  laa  yah-diihim  Sabiilaa.  ‘Itta-khazuuhu  wa  kaanuu zaalimiin.

Commentary

Hu-liyyihim – (out of their ornaments), hu-liyyun is plural of hil-yun. Hil-yun means “Ornaments” that is to say; those people collected entire ornaments of their houses and made from it, an idol of calf.

Suqita  fiii  ‘aydiihim – (feared the consequence thereof), it is a proverb of Arabic language which is used on such occasion when common repentance spread due to any big error.

It is commanded that after departure of Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him), the people of His nation collected their ornaments and their goldsmith named Samri, made for them a calf of the gold and kept it empty from its inner side, and fitted pipes into it in such arrangement that whenever, the air used to pass through them with pressure or caused to pass from them, a sound like a calf used to come out from it.

They did not think that neither that calf could speak with them and nor it could guide them of any sort. Then how this voice was useful? They began to fall prostrate before that self-made calf. Those foolish people put an end to oppression because they opened the way of polytheism.

When Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) returned unto them and rebuked them due to their such evil deed, then they repented and thought: Really it was like choosing the way of error leaving the way of righteousness. They said: We have committed very big mistake. If our Lord will have no mercy on us and our error is not forgiven, then there is no doubt in our destruction and ruin.

Commentary

It was discussed earlier that the people who perceive themselves superior and bigger unnecessarily, whereas they do not have any right to consider themselves so, and falsify the Revelations of God Almighty; observing them clearly, and adopt the way of error; leaving the way of righteousness, God Almighty bereaves them of considering into His Revelations.

In this verse, the reason of bereaving has been described. It is commanded that the arrogant people are deprived of thinking and meditating because they falsify those Revelations of Allah Almighty, which have been either revealed by Him in His Scriptures or He has disclosed them in the world commonly. And they say to those people foolish (God forbid), who consider that the Revelations are proof of God’s existence. They do not engage their attention unto those Revelations. Moreover, either they consider them sport and amusement or close their eyes from them absolutely and are engaged in a spree. Gradually, it becomes their habit that whether anyone asks for anything, they mind their own business. Such a habit is dull of understanding and nothing is visible to their heart except following fearless their desires.

It is a sign of it that Allah Almighty has deprived them from the Guidance and has seized the power of understanding of them regarding His Revelations, and it is result of their own wicked deeds. Those people who falsified the Revelations of Allah Almighty and denied the Day of Resurrection, and ignored the Sayings of the Messengers (peace e upon Them) in a jest that coming of the Day of general Resurrection is certain, they should not have any hope that after death, any reward will be given to them of their good acts and they will dwell with comfort and ease.

Comfort and rest after death is only for those people, who will understand the Revelations of Allah Almighty in this world by observing Them, and they will do good works having faith that, on that Day (the Day of Resurrection) they would have to be liable of their deeds being present in the Court of Allah Almighty.

After death, only good works and good belief will be useful and their fruit will be bestowed. Those who do not believe in the Day of Resurrection, it is open that their entire works were useless with regard to the Hereafter. However, if those works are good, their retribution will be given to them surely in any form but without deliverance.

When the human beings will be standing before Allah Almighty after death and the account of afterlife will be begun, at that time; they will be told: Show that what you have brought for today, so that you are paid its remuneration, because as you know that: No gains without pains. If you have nothing to show, you don’t deserve any good remuneration.

146a.  I shall turn away from My Revelations those who magnify themselves wrongfully in the earth, and if they see each token believe it not, and if they see the way of righteousness choose it not for (their) way, and if they see the way of error choose it for (their) way.
146a.  Sa-‘Asrifu  ‘an  ‘AayaaT i-yallaziina  yata-kabbaruuna   fil-‘arzi  bi-gayril-haqq.  Wa  ‘iny-ya-raw  kulla  ‘Aayaatil-laa  yu’-minuu  bihaa.  Wa  ‘iny-ya-raw  sabiilar-rushdi  laa  yatta-khizuuhu  Sabiilaa.  Wa  ‘iny-raw  sabiilal-gayyi  yatta-khizuuhu  Sabiilaa.

Commentary

Yata-kabbaruuna – {They (magnify themselves)}, the origin of this word is takabbar, which has been derived from kabar. Here the word Kabar means “To be as big factitiously”, that is to say; an individual is actually of a lower grade but shows himself a senior one. We can understand this meaning from the next word bi-gayril-haqq which has been mentioned after the above word.

Bi-gayril-haqq – (wrongfully), haqq means “in fact, verily, truly, exact, accurate, correct and right etc.” Gayril-haqq means “unjust, injustice, wrongful”. It aims that; someone is actually not owner of a thing but he has taken its possession/seized. Rushdi and gayyi (both words) are opposite to each other. Rushdi means the truth, uprightness, honesty and soundness, whereas gayyi is contrary to it; that is to say; falsehood, crookedness, badness and depravity, sabiilar-rushdi  is the way of righteousness and sabiilal-gayyi is the way of error.

Allah Almighty has already been describing since previous verses that none should be worshipped except Him. Although, God Almighty cannot be seen with eyes in this world, but we can know well with our sense by observing His clear tokens, which have been spread in the world, that; certainly He is present at all. But many people are careless from the Revelations and Tokens of Allah Almighty. They see and understand remaining everything from them but do not understand Allah Almighty. Main reason of it is that they are overjoyed in their own thoughts and consider everything themselves. They remain trapped in their own sensual desires and if someone tries to tell them about the Straight Path, they reject his word.

God Almighty commands: I shall turn the hearts of those people away from My Revelations who consider themselves superior to all and disregard others, whereas if they think, there is no greatness into them. They are entirely weak. If they see all Tokens, even then they will not know God Almighty. It is their nature that if they see the Straight Path, even then they will desert it and as soon as they will find any awry path, adopt it immediately. That individual, who does not understand with his sense the existence of the Signs of anything, while he looked them, then you should know that he has been gotten into the difficulties of his desires. Selfishness has fastened him and he leaves the Straight Path intentionally.
