Traitor People of the Scripture

Surah ‘Aali-‘Im-raan (The Family of ‘Imran) – Chptr – 3) 

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.

 وَمِنْ أَهْلِ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ مَنْ إِن تَأْمَنْهُ بِقِنطَارٍ يُؤَدِّهِۦٓ إِلَيْكَ وَمِنْهُم مَّنْ إِن تَأْمَنْهُ بِدِينَارٍ لَّا يُؤَدِّهِۦٓ إِلَيْكَ إِلَّا مَا دُمْتَ عَلَيْهِ قَآئِمًا ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْقَالُوا۟ لَيْسَ عَلَيْنَا فِى ٱلْأُمِّيِّۦنَ سَبِيلٌ وَيَقُولُونَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ٱلْكَذِبَ وَهُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ 75

 بَلَىٰ مَنْ أَوْفَىٰ بِعَهْدِهِۦ وَٱتَّقَىٰ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ 76

75.  Among the People of the Scripture there is he who, if thou trust him with a weight of treasure, will return it to thee. And among them there is he who, if thou trust him with a piece of gold, will not return it to thee unless thou keep standing over him. That is because they say: We have no duty to the Gentiles. And they tell a lie concerning Allah knowingly.           76.  Nay, but (the chosen of Allah is) he who fulfilleth his pledge and wardeth off (evil); for lo! Allah loveth those who ward off (evil).

75.  Wa  min  ‘Ahlil-Kitaabi  man ‘in-  ta’-manhu  bi-qintaa-riny-yu-‘addihiii  ‘ilayk.  Wa  minhum-man  ‘in  ta’-manhu  bi-diinaaril-laa  yu-‘addihiii  ‘ilayka  ‘illaa  maa  dumta  ‘alayhi  qaaa-‘imaa.  Zaalika  bi-‘annahum  qaaluu  laysa  ‘alaynaa  fil-‘um-miyyiina  sabiil.  Wa  yaquu-luuna  ‘alAllaahil-kaziba  wa  hum  ya’-lamuun.         76. Balaa  man  ‘awfaa  bi-‘ahdi-hii  wattaqaa  fa-‘innallaaha  yu-hibbul-Muttaqiin.

Commentary

      

Along with the religious embezzlement, now the recital of the People of the Scripture regarding their worldly dishonesty has also been mentioned. Those people, who cannot be honest even for a little sum, how can we rely on them that they will be faithful in the religious matters?

Some people from them are those who, if you trust in them with a piece of gold, they will belie and will not return it to you unless you keep standing over them every time. Surely all persons of them are not equal. Some are those who, if you trust in them with a weight of treasure, they will return it to you. They will never embezzle. These are the honest and well-disposed persons, who are fed up from Judaism and they have been embracing Islam, like Abdullah bin Salaam (May Allah be pleased with him) etc. The Jews adduce this argument in favor of their worldly embezzlement and dishonesty, “We have no duty to the Gentiles of the Arab, who are not upon our religion. Their wealth is lawful for us in all respect. There is no sin to embezzle the trust of non-religious persons, particularly those who have left their religion and become Muslims. Whereas Allah Almighty has not given them any right like this. Breach of trust is forbidden in accordance with the commands of Allah Almighty. Moreover, the person, who will be honest, trustworthy and faithful, remains in the fear of Allah Almighty and refrains from censured manners; Allah Almighty likes him/her.

 وَلَا تُؤْمِنُوٓا۟ إِلَّا لِمَن تَبِعَ دِينَكُمْ قُلْ إِنَّ ٱلْهُدَىٰ هُدَى ٱللَّهِ أَن يُؤْتَىٰٓ أَحَدٌ مِّثْلَ مَآ أُوتِيتُمْ أَوْيُحَآجُّوكُمْ عِندَ رَبِّكُمْ قُلْ إِنَّ ٱلْفَضْلَ بِيَدِ ٱللَّهِ يُؤْتِيهِ مَن يَشَآءُ وَٱللَّهُ وَٰسِعٌ عَلِيمٌ 73 

يَخْتَصُّ بِرَحْمَتِهِۦ مَن يَشَآءُ وَٱللَّهُ ذُو ٱلْفَضْلِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ 74

73b.  Say (O Muhammad): Lo! the guidance is Allah’s Guidance-that anyone is given the like of that which was given unto you or that they may argue with you in the presence of your Lord. Say (O Muhammad): Lo! the bounty is in Allah’s hand. He bestoweth it on whom He will. And Allah is All-Embracing, All-Knowing.         74.  He selecteth for His mercy whom He will. And Allah is of Infinite Bounty.

73b.  Qul ‘innal-hudaa   hudAllaahi,  ‘any-yu’-taaa  ‘ahadum-misla  maaa  ‘uutiitum  ‘aw  yuhaaaj-juukum  ‘inda  Rabbikum.  Qul  ‘innal-fazla  bi-yaDillaah.  Yu’-tiihi  many-yashaaa’.  Wallaahu  Waasi-‘un    ‘Aliim.      74. Yakh-tassu  bi-rahmatiHii  many-yashaaa’.  Wallaahu  Zul-fazlil-‘Aziim.

Commentary

      

It has been described in these verses that only Allah Almighty may give the Guidance. If anybody wishes to misguide someone, that is not possible without the Command of Allah Almighty. O the children of Israel: you cannot extinguish that Light of Guidance with your tricks, which Allah Almighty has put into the heart of any person. Your plans will become useless. 

It has also been cleared in this verse that the Jews make different kinds of plans and schemes against the Muslims due to jealousy. Reason of their jealousy is that why the Muslims are being given such Divine Law of religion, Prophet-hood and Messenger-hood, which have been bestowed earlier to the children of Israel, and why other people are leading in the religious effort and struggle by overcoming upon them and they (the Muslims) are accusing them before God Almighty.

The Jews used to claim that only their nation was monopolist of the Divine Law. Torah was revealed upon them. Most of the Prophets (peace be upon them) came out of them after Moses (peace be upon him). Then what connection with excellence and bounty has the illiterate and ignorant people of Arab? Why a Messenger has been born from them? But it is visible that due to their jealousy, those predictions of Torah could not be wrong, in which it has been mentioned that Allah Almighty will bring forth a Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) like Moses (peace be upon him) from the children of Ishmael (the brothers of the children of Israel). God will put His Word (Holy Qur’an) into his mouth (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him). Therefore, the children of Ishmael (peace be upon him) got this Wealth and in the field of knowledge, bounty and religious efforts and struggles, They did not lead the children of Israel only but the entire world.

After that it has been described that Allah Almighty is All-Embracing, All-Knowing and of Infinite Bounty. Nothing is deficient in His treasures. And He knows that to whom the greatness should be given. To distribute Prophet-hood, Divine Law of Religion, Belief and each kind of favor is only in His Hand. He bestows what He Wishes, when He Wishes, where He wishes and to whom He wishes.

وَقَالَت طَّآئِفَةٌ مِّنْ أَهْلِ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ ءَامِنُوا۟ بِٱلَّذِىٓ أُنزِلَ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَجْهَٱلنَّهَارِ وَٱكْفُرُوٓا۟ ءَاخِرَهُۥ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ 72

 وَلَا تُؤْمِنُوٓا۟ إِلَّا لِمَن تَبِعَ دِينَكُمْ قُلْ إِنَّ ٱلْهُدَىٰ هُدَى ٱللَّهِ أَن يُؤْتَىٰٓ أَحَدٌ مِّثْلَ مَآ أُوتِيتُمْ أَوْيُحَآجُّوكُمْ عِندَ رَبِّكُمْ قُلْ إِنَّ ٱلْفَضْلَ بِيَدِ ٱللَّهِ يُؤْتِيهِ مَن يَشَآءُ وَٱللَّهُ وَٰسِعٌ عَلِيمٌ 73 

72.  And a party of the People of the Scripture say: Believe in that which hath been revealed unto those who believe at the opening of the day, and disbelieve at the end thereof, in order that they may return.          73a.  And believe not save in one who followeth your religion.

72.  Wa  qaalat-taaa-‘ifatum-min  ‘Ahlil-Kitaabi  ‘aaminuu  billaziii  ‘unzila  ‘alallaziina  ’aa-manuu  wajhan-nahaari  wakfuruuu  ‘aakhirahuu  la-‘allahum  yarji-‘uun.          73a. Wa  laa tu’-minuuu  ‘illaa  li-man-  tabi-‘a  Diinakum.

Commentary

      

Cunning activities and embezzlement of the People of the Scripture have been discussed in these verses. One of their ingenuities was that “some people of the Scripture used to become Muslims with planning in the morning and offer prayers with the Muslims. But they would have to disbelieve in the evening by saying: We have come to know from our great scholars. After verification it is found that he “Muhammad” (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allah Almighty be upon him) is not the Prophet, about whom glad tidings was given. And his circumstances also; do not prove like the right person” (God forbid).

Resultant the persons, who are weak in their belief, when they will see that some Muslims have left Islam, they will also return away and will suppose that surely there might be any fault and blemish in the religion Islam, due to which these people have seen off it after embracing Islam. The Ignorant people of the Arab used to consider that the People of the Scripture were great scholars and learned persons. By this reason, they should imagine that if this new religion was true, then such “learned persons” would not have rejected it; despite they would have to accept it before all.

Along with this plan, the Jews were also taught that, “They should show themselves as Muslims necessarily before them, but remember that really they should not embrace Islam. Notwithstanding they should remain Jews, should not be taken in the Muslims. Moreover, they should remain followers of the Divine religion of Moses (peace be upon him) wholeheartedly. The only purpose to offer prayers and worship along-with the Muslims should be that it would be left afterwards and to deceive them whose belief is weak. They should follow only their own religion”.

It appears from this verse that how they made up their minds for enmity of Islam with cheating. In what manners they schemed to deceive the people. But Allah Almighty is Protecting Guardian of the Muslims. They will never succeed in their plans. It is the duty of the entire Muslims that they should be careful also at their own places and save themselves from the mischief of the enemies of Islam. For example; threat of Israelite state in the center of Islamic Countries, its preparations and plans against the Muslim states are sufficient to open our eyes.

وَدَّت طَّآئِفَةٌ مِّنْ أَهْلِٱلْكِتَٰبِ لَوْ يُضِلُّونَكُمْ وَمَا يُضِلُّونَ إِلَّآ أَنفُسَهُمْ وَمَا يَشْعُرُونَ 69

  يَٰٓأَهْلَ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ لِمَ تَكْفُرُونَ بِـَٔايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ وَأَنتُمْ تَشْهَدُونَ 70

  يَٰٓأَهْلَ ٱلْكِتَٰبِلِمَ تَلْبِسُونَ ٱلْحَقَّ بِٱلْبَٰطِلِ وَتَكْتُمُونَ ٱلْحَقَّ وَأَنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ 71 

69.  A party of the People of the Scripture long to make you go astray. And they make none to go astray except themselves, but they perceive not.         70.  O People of the Scripture! Why disbelieve ye in the Revelations of Allah, when ye (yourselves) bear witness (to their truth)?       71.  O People of the Scripture! Why confound ye truth with falsehood and knowingly conceal the truth?

69.  Waddat-taaa-‘ifatum-min  ‘Ahlil-Kitaabi  law  yuzil-luuna-kum.  Wa  maa  yuzil-luuna  ‘illaaa  ‘anfusahum  wa  maa  yash-‘uruun.       70. Yaaa-‘Ahlil-Kitaabi  lima  takfuruuna  bi-‘Aayaa-Ttillaahi  wa  ‘an-tum  tash-haduun.  71. Yaaa-‘Ahlal-Kitaabi  lima  tal-bisuunal-haqqa  bil-baatili  wa  taktumuunal-haqqa  wa  ‘an-tum  ta’-lamuun.

Commentary

      

In the previous verse, Allah Almighty described, “ ’Allaahu  Waliyyul-  Mu’-miniin” (Allah is the Protecting Guardian of the Believers). In this verse, He commanded: O the People of the Scripture! While Allah is the Protecting Guardian of the Believers, then you cannot deceive them. It is the wish of some People of the Scripture that as they (themselves) went astray, the Muslims should also be misled from the Right Path. But the Muslims will never be entrapped in their deception. However, they have been enhancing in misfortune of their depravity. Harm of these attempts will come up to them, which they do not understand presently.

Then the People of the Scripture have been warned, “Do not deny the Word of Allah Almighty, whereas those Holy Books, in which you have faith, contain the glad tidings about the Last Messenger, Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allah Almighty be upon him) and the Holy Qur’an to which your hearts understand well. And whenever you are alone, then you accept it. But openly you avoid believing in the Last Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allah Almighty be upon him).

The children of Israel had removed some commands of Torah totally due to worldly greediness, some were concealed and did not use to proclaim about them. For instance; they did not use to mention the glad tidings and predictions regarding the Last Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allah Almighty be upon him). It has been pointed out towards these types of matters that, O the People of the Scripture! Why do you amalgamate true and false? And why do you falsify the true glad tidings? Whereas you know that, these all sayings are quite right.

It seems from these verses that the People of the Scripture keep envy with the Muslims and try always to let them go astray like themselves. For this purpose, they will adopt different schemes for the Muslims; they will conspire and consult secretly against them. But Allah Almighty is the Protecting Guardian of the Believers; He will never let them succeed in their plans.

Surah ‘Aali-‘Im-raan (The Family of ‘Imran) – Chptr – 3)

مَا كَانَ إِبْرَٰهِيمُ يَهُودِيًّا وَلَا نَصْرَانِيًّا وَلَٰكِن كَانَ حَنِيفًا مُّسْلِمًا وَمَا كَانَمِنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ 67

  إِنَّ أَوْلَى ٱلنَّاسِ بِإِبْرَٰهِيمَ لَلَّذِينَ ٱتَّبَعُوهُ وَهَٰذَا ٱلنَّبِىُّ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَٱللَّهُ وَلِىُّ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ 68 

67.  Abraham was not a Jew, nor yet a Christian; but he was an upright man who had surrendered (to Allah), and he was not of the idolaters.      68.  Lo! those of the mankind who have the best claim to Abraham are those who followed him, and this Prophet and those who believe (with him). And Allah is the Protecting Guardian of the believers.

67.  Maa kaana  ‘Ibraa-hiimu  Yahuu-diyyanw-wa  laa  Nasraa-niyyanw-wa  laakin  kaana  Haniifam-Muslimaa.  Wa  maa  kaana  minal-mushrikiin.       68. ‘Inna  ‘aw-lannaasi  bi-‘ibraahma  lallaziinat-taba-‘uuhu  wa  haazan-Nabiyyu  wallaziina  ‘aamanuu.  Wallaahu  Waliyyul-  Mu’-miniin.

Commentary

      

Haniifan – (an upright man), the person, who goes the right path and leaves all spurious ways, who disconnects his relations from the entire sides and connects only with God Almighty, Who is the Most High (the Worshipped). The Holy Qur’an has named him (peace be upon him) as Haniifam-Muslimaa such blessed name.  

Musliman – (who has surrendered to Allah, origin of Islam, Muslim and tasliim (salutation, complement, admission and accepting) is Salama, which means obedience, subjection and subordination. This Will, salutation, complement, admission, subjection, subordination and accepting is actually real religion. This very manner remained always of the entire Prophets (peace be upon them). Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) enlightened particularly this peculiarity of obedience with his complete dutifulness.

Allah Almighty has described to the people of the Scripture about the Rule of Conduct of the Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) in this verse. He was a simple Muslim, that is to say; leaving the entire wrong paths, he (peace be upon him) had chosen only one path which leads to Allah Almighty, he was only His obedient. His (peace be upon him) life’s each moment tells that he was a statue of Will, salutation, complement, admission, subjection, subordination and accepting with his perfect obedience. Leaving his wife and newly born son in the barren valley of Arab for obeying the command of Allah Almighty, becoming ready to sacrifice his beloved son Ishmael (peace be upon him) for the cause of Allah Almighty and construction of the House of Allah Almighty in Makkah (The Square Building). These entire things indicate that how much he (peace be upon him) was obedient to Allah Almighty. Absolutely he was not of the idolaters as you are saying today someone son and someone daughter of God Almighty.

Allah Almighty pointed out that either they had more relationship with Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) who believed in Him or this consistency has been bestowed to the Last Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be  upon him) and his nation. This nation has more suitableness with Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) in its faith, deeds and name (Muslim). The Prophet, Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) of this nation was sent due to the supplications of Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him), and the teachings of Holy Qur’an are based on these principles.

Warning to the People of the Scripture

يَٰٓأَهْلَ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ لِمَتُحَآجُّونَ فِىٓ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ وَمَآ أُنزِلَتِ ٱلتَّوْرَىٰةُ وَٱلْإِنجِيلُ إِلَّا مِنۢ بَعْدِهِۦٓ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ 65

  

هَٰٓأَنتُمْ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ حَٰجَجْتُمْ فِيمَا لَكُم بِهِۦ عِلْمٌ فَلِمَتُحَآجُّونَ فِيمَا لَيْسَ لَكُم بِهِۦ عِلْمٌ وَٱللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ وَأَنتُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَ 66 

65.  O people of the Scripture! Why do ye argue about Abraham, when the Torah and the Gospel were not revealed till after him? Have ye then no sense?       66.  Lo! ye are these who argue about that whereof ye have some knowledge: Why then argue ye concerning that whereof ye have no knowledge? And Allah knoweth, and ye know not.

65.  Yaaa-’Ahlal-kitaabi  lima  tuhaaaj-juuna  fiii  ‘Ibraa-hiima  wa  maaa ‘unzilatit-Tawraatu wal-‘Injiilu ‘illaa mim- ba’-dih.  Afalaa ta’-qiluun.       66. Haaa-‘antum  haaa-‘ulaaa-‘i  haajajtum  fiimaa  lakum-  bihii ‘ilmun-  falima  tuhaaaj-juuna  fii-maa  laysa  lakum-  bihii  ‘ilm. Wallaahu  ya’-lamu  wa  ‘antum laa  ta’-lamuun.

Commentary

      

The Jews and the Christians (both) used to claim that they were Muslims and they believed in Oneness of God. They were also claimant of the honor and respect of the Prophet and sincere friend of Allah, Abraham (peace be upon him). Each of them used to say that Prophet Abraham (peace be upon Him) was upon their religion. Which teachings and faith we have, that was same as of Prophet Abraham (peace be upon Him). That is to say, according to their sayings; Prophet Abraham (peace be upon Him) was either a Jew or a Christian.

Allah Almighty replied their false beliefs, “As the Jews and the Christians believe in Torah and Gospel, these Scriptures were revealed hundreds of the years after the time of Prophet Abraham (peace be upon Him). Then how can they say that Prophet Abraham (peace be upon Him) was either a Jew or a Christian? In fact, which type of Jews and Christians you are; in those meanings even Prophet Moses and Jesus (peace be upon them) cannot be called either Jew or Christian, because you are not even completely on the real religion of those grandeur Messengers (peace be upon them). And if you mean that the Divine Law of Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) was nearer to your religions, then it is also wrong. How did you know this knowledge? Because neither your Books have any mention about it nor God Almighty has informed you, and nor you can produce any proof about it, if it is not a folly then what is this. – As your quarrel is in a matter, about which you have not any knowledge.

The things about which you had some knowledge, you have quarreled because of them, that is to say; the incidents of Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) or glad tidings regarding the last Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allah Almighty be upon him) etc. But why do you shoot an arrow of conjecture about which you know nothing. Only Allah Almighty is Knower that which religion of the Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) was, which Divine Law is nearer to that today and who is his real successor.

Solicitation for alliance

Surah ‘Aali-‘Im-raan (The Family of ‘Imran) – Chptr – 3) 

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.
(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

قُلْ يَٰٓأَهْلَ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ تَعَالَوْا۟ إِلَىٰ كَلِمَةٍ سَوَآءٍۭ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَكُمْ أَلَّانَعْبُدَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهَ وَلَا نُشْرِكَ بِهِۦ شَيْـًٔا وَلَا يَتَّخِذَ بَعْضُنَا بَعْضًا أَرْبَابًا مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ فَإِن تَوَلَّوْا۟ فَقُولُوا۟ ٱشْهَدُوا۟ بِأَنَّا مُسْلِمُونَ 64 

64.  Say:  O people of the Scripture!   Come to an agreement between us and you: that we shall worship none but Allah, and that we shall ascribe no partner Unto Him, and that none of us shall take others for lords beside Allah. And if they turn away, then say: Bear witness that we are they who have surrendered (unto Him).

64.  Qul  yaaa- ‘Ahlal-Kitaabi  ta- ‘aalaw  ‘ilaa  Kalimatin  sawaaa-‘im-  baynaa  wa  baynakum  ‘allaa  na’-budu  ‘illAllaaha  wa  laa  nushrika  biHii  shay-‘anw-wa  laa  yattakhiza  ba’-zunaa  ba’-zan  ‘arbaabam-min-duuNillaah.  Fa-‘in-  ta-wal-law  faquulush-haduu  bi-‘annaa  Muslimuun.

Commentary

      

The Messenger, Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allah Almighty be upon him) commanded to the delegation of Najraan, “’Aslimuu” (Embrace Islam). They said, “’Aslamnaa” (we are Muslims). It is recognized from the dialogue that the Christians also used to claim that they were Muslims, “We are constant upon Islam”. Like this, whenever the people of Scripture were invited for believing the Unity of the Deity, they used to say, “We believe in God also”. In this verse, it has been signified to their claim, “O people of the Scripture! You and we are unanimous in the conception on original faith of Unity (Oneness of God). This faith can make all of us one league, provided that you and we should not change these claims. The only requirement is that as you claim with tongue that you believe in One God, the truth of your claim be proved also by IMPLEMENTING. Believe in His Oneness and ascribe no partner Unto Him really. Surrender yourselves unto Him, Worship none but Allah, and that none of you will attribute others as gods beside Allah. None should be made His son or daughter. Do not include your will in the things, which have been fixed by Him lawful and unlawful. Moreover, you should accept His Commands and make not alteration into them.

But, in spite of believing it, if they reject the Oneness of God, attribute someone partner of Allah Almighty and turn away, then O Muslims! Say to them: O the people of the Scripture! Bear witness that you are such people who are firm on Islam, who have surrendered unto Allah Almighty and who are His obedient.

This verse manifests basic policy of Islam that the Muslims are ready to cooperate with every group in the matters of goodness and good works. If there is any form of non-cooperation with any group, that is only form of sin, rebellion and insurrection. Islam invited also those people of the Scripture who used to oppose it in the beginning, for teaching and preaching about the mutual belief of the Oneness of God to come to an agreement among the both parties.
