The cattle on the name of idols

Surah MAAA-‘IDAH (The Table Spread) – Chapter – 5)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

102.  A folk before you asked (for such disclosers) and then disbelieved therein.

103.  Allah hath not appointed anything in the nature of a Bahirah or a Sa’ibah or a Wasilah or a Ham’i, but those who disbelieve invent a lie against Allah. And most of them have no   sense.
102.  Qad  sa-‘alahaa-  qawmum-min-  qablikum  summa  ‘asbahuu  bihaa  kafiriin.

103.  Maa  ja-’alAllaahu mim  bahiira-tinw-wa  laa  saaa-‘ibatinw-wa  laa  wasiilatinw-wa  laa  haaminw-wa  laakin-nallaziina  kafaruu  yafta-ruuna  ‘alAllaahil-kazib.  Wa  ‘aksaruhum  laa  ya’-qiluun.

Commentary

Allah Almighty commands that there was a folk before you, who asked about such disclosers, which were not made unlawful clearly, when they were replied then they knew that it was difficult to act upon them, so they denied from believing into them.

At first, they met with difficulty due to asking the commandment about such a matter, which was left only for their easiness. Secondly, when they were bidden to do as commanded, they felt trouble in its procedure compliance and refused to obey this order, and became disbelievers.

In the second verse, it has been forbidden from another absurd tradition of the idolaters, due to which, such lawful things were used to make unlawful by them, which were not made unlawful by Allah Almighty. For example; they used to give up drinking the milk of any animal and say that it was appointed on the name of so and so idol. Only that particular idol was authorized to reap advantage from those ‘left free’ animals, as nowadays too, any male buffalo, bull or stallion etc. is set free.

These animals had separate names. The Bahirah was a female camel whose ears were cut; one did not use to allow his wife, daughters, or any of his household to benefit from its wool, hair or milk. But, if it died, they used to share it. The Sa'ibah was a female camel, let loose for free pasture for the idols, and nothing was allowed to be carried on it. As for the Wasilah, it was the female camel that gives birth to twelve offspring females without any male camel’s birth in between the twelve. When female camel delivered for the thirteenth time, they used to cut its ears and say, it has Wasalat (connected deliveries),' and they did neither use it, nor hit it and nor prevent it from drinking from any pool. Ham’i was the male buffalo, bull or stallion etc. which was father of many offspring.

This all was done to please the idols, but along with it, they used to say too that Allah is also pleased due to these deeds. It is commanded that Allah Almighty has not appointed anything in this nature (as explained above). They invent a lie and most of them have no sense, who say it the order of Allah Almighty.

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

101.  O ye who believe! Ask not of things which, if they were made known unto you, would but trouble you; and if ye ask of them when the Qur’an is being revealed, they will be made known unto you. Allah has pardoned this. And Allah is Forgiving, Clement.
101.  Yaaa-‘ayyu  -hallaziina  ‘aamanuu  laa  tas-‘aluu  ‘an  ‘ashyaaa-‘a  ‘in-tubda  lakum  tasu’-kum.  Wa  ‘in  tas-‘aluu  ‘anhaa  hiina  yunazza-lul-Qur-‘aanu  tubda  lakum.  ‘AfAllaahu   ‘anhaa. Wallaahu Gafuurun  Haliim.

Commentary

Summary of that narration, which was being explained with effect from the last two Sections, is that you should neither increase anything, nor decrease yourselves in the matters of the religion. Do that, about which you are enjoined to do and refrain from that, which has been forbidden.

Attention of the Muslims has been drawn towards another matter in this verse. Some people began to ask such questions that if they were made known, then those matters would have been framed as the laws of the religion, and it would have become indispensable to act upon them. So this kind of investigation has been prohibited. In it, there is a chance of narrowing an open way, willingly or unwillingly.

Allah Almighty says that it is necessary for the believers that they should not ask questions about such things, due to which, either the labour may increase, or the grief and sorrow can be created, because at the time of Divine Revelation, every answer will be descended by inspiration. And then it would become incumbent to act according to the revealed commandment.

This is a facility from Allah Almighty that abundant matters have been left without illustration. Bear in mind along with it also that Allah Almighty is Forgiving too. Actually it should be in such manner that everyone would have to be ready to act upon that which is commanded, and none should ask any question at one’s own willingly or unwillingly about anything.

This verse has the same instruction, which has been accepted as the best method of framing the laws. That is to say; to make the things lawful, which are useful clearly, to prevent entirely from such things, which are harmful openly, and to let the remaining matters go on every person’s own free will, that one may decide oneself thoughtfully. This is the Way, which Islam has chosen. Alas! Either many people do not understand, or they do not act in accordance with it, who understands.

The Evil and the Good - Quran Chapter 5 – 100 (Pt-7, Stg-2) (L-743) -

Quran Chapter 5- 100 (Pt-7, Stg-2) (L-743) -

The Evil and the Good

Surah MAAA-‘IDAH (The Table Spread) – Chapter – 5)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

100.  Say: The evil and the good are not alike even though the plenty of the evil attract thee. So be mindful of your duty to Allah, O men of understanding, that ye may succeed.
100.  Qul-laa  yas-ta-wil-khabiisu  wat-tayyibu  wa  law  ‘a’-jabaka  kas-ratul-khabiis.  FattaqUllaaha  yaaa-‘ulil-‘al-baabi  la-‘allakum  tufli-huun.

Commentary

In the previous section, the Muslims were forbidden that they should not fix the lawful and pure things as unlawful for themselves, and it was told that they should give up those some things, which are impure and bad. It was signified that the evil things are those, due to which Satan gets chance to cause to fight and raise disturbance among the human beings. On the contrary, Allah Almighty has kept very big advantages in the good, pure and lawful things. The aim to cause to understand from it was that certainly those deeds and things are harmful for the human beings, which are forbidden by Allah Almighty. And certainly those deeds and things are useful and advantageous for the mankind, either in the world or on the Day of Resurrection, which are commanded by Him to be done. Therefore, the Muslims should stop those acts immediately, about which Allah Almighty has forbidden and do those acts immediately, about which He has enjoined to do, because it is impossible that Allah Almighty bids to do a deed and there is no usefulness in that command.

The verse under discussion today, makes the same subject known clearly that science of human being is not sufficient to know the good and the evil of the things/acts. So they should be informed that pure things and impure things will never be alike in grades. If the pure thing is even less in quantity, even then that is better than the impure in plenty. Although, the evil becomes public in each direction and the people are taken in that the thing, which has become prevalent, would be good. If the evil has spread everywhere and the people do it generally, then it does not mean that it would be good. Goodness and badness of anything depends on the command of Allah Almighty.

At the end of the last verse it has been described that the men of understanding should be mindful of their duty to Allah Almighty. Hope of their liberation is in it only. Another point has come out in this verse also that the decision should not depend on the majority of votes or opinions, but it should be according to the commands of Allah Almighty and His Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him).

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

98.  Know that Allah is Severe in punishment, and that Allah (also) is Forgiving, Merciful.

99.  The duty of the Messenger is only to convey (the Message). And Allah knoweth what ye proclaim and what ye hide.
98.  ‘I’-lamuuu  ‘annAllaaha  Shadiidul-‘iqaabi  wa  ‘annAllaaha  Gafuur-Rahiim.

99.  Maa  ‘alar-Rasuuli  ‘illal  balaag.

Commentary

The most Important Principle of Islam is:
“Bidding the Good and Forbidding the Evil”

Those matters are kept on different places in the Holy Qur’aan like these verses, which Allah Almighty desires to teach the humankind. From the beginning of this Chapter (Surah), some commands regarding some works to be done and some are forbidden as ‘Amr bil Ma’-ruuf wa Nahii ‘anil Munkar  (Bidding the Good and Forbidding the Evil) are being explained. It can be understood clearly by thinking into them deeply that which the Way of our life is suitable?

Today, it is commanded: Know that Allah Almighty is Severe in punishment, and He also is Forgiving and Merciful. Then the same verse has been repeated that the duty of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) is only to convey the Message properly. Every matter of every individual is with Allah Almighty in future. He knows the open and secret deeds of every person.  We can understand clearly, if we deem that “The human being should understand well efficiently before starting one’s works that the Creator of entire works, the world and one’s own, is One, only Allah (God), Who is Mighty and Master of all creatures, and the entire are His servants and slaves. Neither can any person give anything to any other, and nor can anybody snatch but Allah. Without His order, neither can anyone harm someone, nor favor without His Will. So neither there is any need to be frightened from any person, nor want of flatter/worship to any creature. He will punish severely to the evildoers and is Forgiving for them, who pray before Him humbly and bow in front of Him hopelessly. The evils and sins are those acts and deeds, which have been forbidden by Him in Holy Qur’aan, revealed on His Last Messenger, Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him). And the good works are those, which have been enjoined by Him to be done. Therefore, there is no purpose of our life other than that we should obey His commandments, do that what His Apostle (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) says, and refrain from that, from which He (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) forbids us. That entire is useless which we do without or against His commandment.

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

97.  Allah has appointed the Ka’-bah, the Sacred House, an asylum of security for mankind, and the Sacred Month and the offerings and the collard animals (of sacrifice). That is so that ye may know that Allah knoweth whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth, and that Allah is Knower of all things.

Commentary

There are some commands of Allah Almighty about Ka’bah in this verse, which need special attention of everyone: “This Sacred House, which is called Ka’-bah (Inviolable Place of Makkah), should be honored properly, as well as those Pilgrims, who come here for the purpose of Hajj (Pilgrimage) and their offerings and the collard animals of sacrifice should be regarded favorably”.

It has been described that Allah Almighty has appointed His Sacred House and the Inviolable Place of Makkah named (Ka’-bah), a place of refuge, shelter and security for the life of the entire mankind. He has fixed also for the entire human beings’ source of living and cheer, to the Sacred Month of Pilgrimage and those deeds, which are performed during the days of Hajj, like bringing the offerings and the collard animals (to be distinguished easily) of sacrifice to Ka’-bah with pump and show.

These deeds were already tokens of safety and peace, and signs of stoppage against disturbance and mischief. It is so much clear foretelling that, without Allah Almighty, Who is Knower of all things, nobody can tell. And as long as the time will be over, you will be able to know slowly and gradually its truth and you will recognize that certainly Allah Almighty knows all the secrets of whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth. He is, Who determined the Ka’-bah as a Ground of life for the world. The Secret of the world’s excellence and stability is hidden in His pleasure and salutation only.

Quran Chapter 5- 96 (Pt-7, Stg-2) (L-740) -

Hunting in Ehraam

Surah MAAA-‘IDAH (The Table Spread) – Chapter – 5)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

96.  To hunt and to eat the game of the sea is made lawful for you, a provision for you and for seafarers; but to hunt on land is forbidden to you so long as ye are in pilgrim-garb (Ehraam). And be mindful of your duty to Allah, unto Whom ye will be gathered.
96.  ‘U-hilla  lakum  saydul-bahri  wa  ta-‘aamuhuu  mataa-‘allakum  wa  lis-say-yaarah.  Wa  hurrima  ‘alay-kum  saydul-barri  maa  dumtum  huru-maa.  WattaqUllaa-hallaziii  ‘ilayhi  tuhsharuun.

Commentary

Some more commandments about hunting the game in the form of pilgrim-garb have been described in this verse.  Allah Almighty says: O Muslims! To hunt the game of the sea i.e. to catch the fish is lawful for you in each condition even that it is not forbidden for you in the form of Ehraam too. Like this, if you possess any fish without hunting, on the condition, that has come out alive from the water and died after coming out, to eat it is made lawful for you. And it has been made lawful for the purpose that you, as well as the seafarers too, may reap advantage from this permission at the time of necessity in the condition of journey.

The entire ponds, wells and pits filled with water etc. which have fish, come in the group of rivers. Then it has been commanded again that either to hunt on land (wild game), or partake somehow in it, or to give an order for it, is forbidden to you so long as you are in pilgrim-garb (Ehraam). The aim to cause to know it is that only hunting the wild game is prohibited in the form of Ehraam, whereas hunting the fish is permitted, though you hunt it yourselves or someone else (whom you have ordered) hunts it for you. This permission is for all times.

As it is forbidden to hunt wild game in the form of pilgrim-garb, like this, hunting is forbidden also for everyone in the Court of Haram (Ka’-bah) at Makkah, whether the people are in pilgrim-garb or wearing any other dress.

Some noxious things have been explained by name in the Sayings of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) that those things can be killed by everyone whether they are in pilgrim-garb or wearing any other dress. They would not have to remit any fine. Those things are “the crow, the kite, the snake, the scorpion, the rat, the mad dog and the wolf etc.
