Commentary

In the previous verses it was narrated that some Hypocrites were selfish and greedy. In this connection, the rule of Zakaat was discussed also, that God Almighty has prescribed for you as a collective duty for distributing this money in some kinds of the people. The property of Zakaat (the poor-due) must be divided according to God’s prescribed method. Besides them, no individual have any right in such property and money. Another bad habit of the Hypocrites has been disclosed in this verse.

It is commanded that some Hypocrites used to discuss the evil of the Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) with one another during mutual conversation at their places of assembly and calumniate Him of various sorts. When they were told that if such news would reach the Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam), He (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) would feel grief and be afflicted. Then they used to say: We shall content Him (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) by evading and tricks, because He (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) is the person who only hears, and whatever is told to Him (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) by anyone, He trusts. It is commanded: Say to them O Prophet (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam): This courtesy of the Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) is only for your betterment, otherwise if He (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) had been excited due to very little matters, then you would have been ruined very earlier. Why the morality of the Prophet (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) must not be correct whereas He has faith in Allah Almighty. He (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) trusts in the truth of His believer Companions (May Allah be pleased with Them). And He is a mercy and kindness for those of you who are true Muslims. If now; someone desires to acquire sympathy and favor of the Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) from this pleasant manner, he is fortunate. And whosoever carries on His back-biting and vexing by reaping advantage of His patience and softness, then for him there is a very painful doom. Such kind of people will be punished very severely in the both Worlds.

The People who deserve Alms - Quran Chapter 9 – 60 (Pt-10, Stg-2) (L-1205) -

Quran Chapter 9 – 60 (Pt-10, Stg-2) (L-1205) -

The People who deserve Alms

Chapter Tawbah (Repentance) – Surah – 9)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

60.  The alms are only for the poor and the needy, and those who collect them, and those whose hearts are to be reconciled, and to free the captives and the debtors, and for the Cause of Allah, and (for) the wayfarer. A duty imposed by Allah. Allah is Knower, Wise.
60.  ‘Innamas-Sadaqaatu  lil-fuqaraaa-‘i   wal-masaakiini  wal-‘aamiliina  ‘alay-haa  wal-mu-‘allafati  quluu-buhum  wa  fir-riqaabi  wal-gaarimiina  wa fii  Sabii-LIllaahi  wabnis-sabiil.  Farii-zatam-minAllaah.  Wallaahu ‘Aliimun  Hakiim.

Commentary

It has been described in the previous verses that some Hypocrites are desirous to receive the entire Alms which the Messenger of God Almighty (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) distribute. They wish that those alms must not be given to any other save them. In this connection, complete ruling about the Alms; that is to say; the money and goods of Zakaat (the poor-due) has been explained in this verse, so that; it must be known that the right of any individual is not established as the mind may desire by claiming  and wishes of getting Alms.

Zakaat (the poor-due) is spent on the following objects. Those people who are not entitled according to such category, which has been mentioned in this verse, they will be given nothing from the Alms and Zakaat fund. It is commanded that Zakaat (the Poor-due) should be given to following eight kinds of deserving people:

1.   The poor that is to say; who has nothing.

2.   The needy i.e. that individual who have something but cannot fulfill his requirement with it.

3.   Collectors of the revenues – those servants of the Government who are appointed for receiving and collecting Zakaat from the people.

4.   Mu-‘allafatul-quluub – those persons whose hearts are to be reconciled, that is to say; those people who feel that; by embracing Islam; their necessities would be fulfilled, and they are ready to enter in Islam.

5.   For setting free the captives.

6.   The debtors – seekers of financial support due to any sudden necessity.

7.   Those people who are busy in the public works and for the Cause of God Almighty as strivers, endeavors and religious warriors.

8.   The wayfarers – who have not any money during their journey, though they have at home.

Way of spending the amount and goods of Zakaat has already been prescribed by God Almighty. He has determined it as a national duty Himself on account of His Knowledge and Wisdom. None can make any change in it; at his own. If any group from the above mentioned eight kinds of people does not exist, then the money of the Zakaat must be distributed in remainder groups/people.

The Greedy

Chapter Tawbah (Repentance) – Surah – 9)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

58.  And of them are those who defameth thee in the matter of the alms. So if they are given thereof they are content, and if they are not given thereof, behold! They are enraged.

59.  (How much more seemly) had they been pleased with that which Allah and His Messenger had given them and had said: Allah sufficeth us, Allah will give us of His Bounty, and (also) His Messenger and unto Allah we are suppliants.
58.  Wa  minhum  many-yal-mizuka  fis-sadaqaat.  Fa-‘in  ‘u’-tuu  minhaa  razuu  wa  ‘illam  yu’-taw  minhaaa  ‘izaa hum  yas-khatuun.

59.  Wa  law  ‘anna-hum  razuu  maa  ‘aataa-humUllaahu  wa  Rasuulu-Huu  wa  qaaluu  hasbu-nAllaahu  sa-yu’-tii-nAllaahu  min-  fazli-Hii  wa  Rasuulu-Huuu,  ‘innaaa  ‘ilAllaahi  raagi-buun.

Commentary

Yal-mizu – (they defame, reproach), this word is from lam-zun, which means “to stick any pointed thing in”, it also means “to find faults in other’s work, to resolve on mischief, taunting and slandering etc.”

One more habit of the selfish Hypocrites has been described in these verses. It was told in the previous verses that: They have to flatter you for the purpose that; lest you know not their actual condition, otherwise they will live nowhere. If they find any other place for hiding themselves, they will lurk immediately, turning away from you. After that, their other habit has been disclosed here.

It is commanded that when Messenger of God Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) distributes alms, they say: He (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) gives to them only who are His own (companions and relatives etc.), and does not bear equal to all in mind.

But if they are given according to their will, then they are content, if not given, then again they begin to tell the same lies. It was better for them if they had trust in God Almighty and in the justice of His Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him); and had been content on that whatever was given to them. But they are at a great distance from it.

Magnificence of the Believers is very higher than their imagination. They are seekers of God’s willingness in all conditions and are inclined to Him only, and they remain content by accepting the grant of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) happily.

Quran Chapter 9 – 55 to 57 (Pt-10, Stg-2) (L-1203) - درس قرآن

Load of the wealth

Chapter Tawbah (Repentance) – Surah – 9)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

55.  So let not their riches nor their children marvel thee (O Muhammad). Allah thereby intendeth but to punish them in the life of the world and that their souls shall pass away while they are disbelievers.

56.  And they swear by Allah that they are in truth of you, when they are not of you, but they are folk who are afraid.

57.  Had they but found a refuge, or caverns, or a place to enter, they sure had resorted thither swift as runaways.
55.  Falaa  tu’-jibka  ‘amwaalu-hum  wa  laa  ‘awlaa-duhum.  ‘Innamaa  yurii-dUllaahu  liyu-‘azzibahum-  bihaa  fil-hayaatid-dunyaa  wa  taz-haqa  ‘anfu-suhum  wa  hum  kaafiruun.

57.  Law  yaji-duuna  malja-‘an-  ‘aw  magaaraatin  ‘aw  mudda-khalal-la-wallaw  ‘ilayhi  wa  hum  yajma-huun.

Commentary

Taz-haqa – (pass away), the origin of this word is zahaqun. Zahaqun means – effacement, to be wrong, to walk away by leaving any place

Yafraquun – (they are afraid), it has come out from the word farq. Farq means – difference and fear. Here it has been used in the meaning of “fear”.

Mudda-khalan – (a place to enter), it is an adverb of place; origin of it is ‘ad-khaal, which has been made from dakhala. Dakhala means – to enter, to penetrate in.

Yajma-huun – (swift as runaways), this word has been derived from jam-hun. Jam-hun means – to rebel, to escape by breaking all barriers, to commit insurrection.

It is commanded that lots of money, stout and active children of these Godless Hypocrites are embarrassment for them, being entangled in which, they bear different kinds of tortures and troubles. Like this, they also tell a lie that they are companions of Yours. If they find any little shelter anywhere today, then they will escape by breaking all barriers.

Valuelessness of the wealth - Quran Chapter 9 – 53 & 54 (Pt-10, Stg-2) (L-1202) -

Quran Chapter 9 – 53 & 54 (Pt-10, Stg-2) (L-1202) -

Valuelessness of the wealth

Chapter Tawbah (Repentance) – Surah – 9)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

53.  Say: Pay (your contribution), willingly or unwillingly, it will not be accepted from you. Lo! ye are froward folk.

54.  And naught preventeth that their contributions should be accepted from them save that they have disbelieved in Allah and in His Messenger, and they come not to worship save as idlers, and pay not (their contribution) save reluctantly.
53.  Qul  ‘anfiquu  taw-‘an  ‘aw  karhal-lany-yuta-qabbala  minkum  ‘inna-kum  kuntum  qaw-man-  faasi-qiin.

Commentary

Nafaqaatu – (contributions), it is plural of nafaqatun. Which money is spent by a man, is called nafaqah, whether that is spent to fulfill own necessities or in the works of welfare and rehabilitation for the common people. This word was discussed in Surah ‘Al-Baqarah. Here it aims “alms, offerings and contribution”.

Kusaalaa – (the idlers), this word is plural of kaslaan which has been derived from kasal. Kasal means idleness, sloth, to shirk from work. Kasalaan is an adjective from the same.

It is commanded that God Almighty is not indigent of your wealth. Keep your wealth. State of your intentions is obvious. Afterwards, your contribution for the help of Muslims will not be accepted, whether you give it happily or under compulsion. While you have disobeyed God Almighty, did not care about the Sayings of His Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him), offered prayer to show; in weary condition and with difficulty, and paid contribution with reluctant heart, then you have not been able that your contribution for the help of Muslims are accepted. We don’t need your wealth. Allah Almighty observes the condition of the hearts. While your hearts are insincere, then it is useless to spend the wealth. There is no reward for it.
