Arguing against the Command of God (2)

Surah ‘Al-Baqarah (The Cow) – Chapter – 2)

BisMillaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

69.  They said: Pray for us unto thy Lord that He make clear to us of what colour she is. (Moses) answered: Lo! He saith:   Verily she is a yellow cow, bright is her colour, gladdening beholders.
69.  Qaalud-‘u lanaa  Rabbaka Yubayyil-lanaa maa law-nuhaa. Qaala  ‘innaHuu yaquulu  ‘in-nahaa baqaratun-  saf-raaa-‘u, faaqi-‘ul-lawnuhaa  tasurrun-naaziriin.

Commentary

It was stated in the previous lesson that the Children of Israel began to ask questions about that cow unnecessarily, for which they were commanded to sacrifice. At first they asked about the age of the cow, so they were told that “Verily she is a cow neither with calf nor immature. (She is) between the two conditions”. As though, due to asking questions, they became bound about the age of the cow.

But they did not cease and asked second question: What would be color of the cow? Now Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) told them after asking from Allah Almighty that the color of the cow should be yellow, which should be such fast and clear that those people become happy who look at it and they consider that it is very beautiful cow.

As if, they raised some more difficulty for themselves by asking another question. And it all was result of wickedness of the Children of Israel, due to which they had been making difficult and complicated to a simple order for themselves at their own.

It appears from such questions that those people were utmost clever and idle fellows. They wished to evade in the commandment of Allah Almighty. They did not perceive that what philosophy is hidden in the Commandment of Allah Almighty. That work, which was being considered very difficult for them, had abundant of secret expedience.

Actually they were trying to evade the order. But as they were trying to evade, they were drowning in the more difficult situation. They did not understand that how much expedience and secrets are hidden in His orders.

We should learn from such incidents of the Children of Israel and remember it always that arguing and fault finding against the commandments of Allah Almighty can never be useful. We should abstain from it and obey His all Commandments without wrangling.

Arguing against the Command of God (1)

Surah ‘Al-Baqarah (The Cow) – Chapter – 2)

BisMillaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

68.  They said: Pray for us unto thy Lord that He make clear to us what (cow) she is. (Moses) answered: Lo! He saith: Verily she is a cow neither with calf nor immature. (She is) between the two conditions. So do that which ye are commanded.
68.  Qaalud-‘u lanaa Rabbaka   yubayyil-lanaa maa hii.  Qaala ‘innaHuu yaquulu ‘innahaa baqaratul-laa faarizunw-wa laa bikr.  ‘Awaanum- bayna zaalik. Faf-‘aluu maa tu’-maruun.

Commentary

Maa hiya – {what (cow) she is}, when the Children of Israel were commanded that they should sacrifice a cow, then instead of obeying the commandment immediately, they began to argue; absurd reasoning. At first they asked about the age of the cow that what she is.

Faarizun – (old), it means such age, after reaching where, giving birth to a calf would have been stopped i.e. very old.

Bikr – (immature), it aims such cow, which should be elder than a calf (but any calf should not yet have been born from it).

‘Awaanun – (between), it aims that the cow should be of middle-age – neither old and nor a calf.

Commandments of God Almighty and His Prophets (peace be upon Them) are not without wisdom. However it is not necessary that every individual may understand its philosophy. So nobody should argue or hesitate obeying Them and every person should act upon Their orders/instructions without dispute.

In the beginning, every commandment/instruction/law was simple and easy, but due to making differences too small to be important, the orders and laws became difficult and complicated.

God Almighty commanded the Children of Israel through Moses (peace be upon Him) that they should sacrifice a cow. It was entirely a straight and simple order. They had to sacrifice any cow. But they argued and kept on asking question over questions. At first they said to the Prophet (peace be upon Him): Do you make fun of us? When the Prophet (peace be upon Him) assured them and said: Allah forbid that I should be among the foolish.

Then the Children of Israel began to say a new thing: Ask from your God about the age of the cow – should that be old or young. It was explained that the cow should be of middle-aged. As though, in the easy commandment they produced themselves a difficulty.

The Jews were commanded to sacrifice a cow - Quran Chptr 2-67 (Pt-1, Stg-1)(L–100)-درس قرآن

Quran Chapter 2-67 (Pt-1, Stg-1) (L-100) - درس قرآن

The Jews were commanded to sacrifice a cow

Surah ‘Al-Baqarah (The Cow) – Chapter – 2)

BisMillaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

67.  And when Moses said unto his people: Lo! Allah commandeth you that ye sacrifice a cow, they said: Dost thou make fun of us? He answered: Allah forbid that I should be among the foolish.
67.  Wa  ‘iz  qaala Muusaa li-qawmihiii  ‘innAllaaha  ya’-mu-rukum  ‘an- tazbahuu BAQARAH. Qaaluuu  ‘a-tattakhi-zunaa huzuwaa   Qaala ‘a-uuzu Billaahi ‘an ‘akuuna minal-jaahiliin.

Commentary

The cow was very sacred near Children of Israel. When Moses (peace be upon Him) caused to hear them command of God Almighty, they remained aghast. They did not believe that it was really commanded to sacrifice such sacred animal like this. They supposed that Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) was mocking.

Al-jaahiliin – (the foolish, the ignorant, the illiterates) this word has been derived from jahal. Literal meaning of it is “to do any work contrary to its prescribed and correct method”. If it is due to ignorance then the stupidity is simple and if it is done intentionally then the stupidity is compound. Moses (peace be upon Him) asks God Almighty for refuge from the both kinds of foolishness. An individual, who wishes to command over the people, at the name of God, either he is careless from God or foolish, and is unaware of the results of mocking in the religious matters.

A person from the Children of Israel was killed but the killer was not traceable. God Almighty commanded Moses (peace be upon Him) to order the Children of Israel for sacrificing a cow and beat a piece of its flesh at the dead body of the killed. With it the murdered person will come back to life and will tell the name of his killer.

Due to dwelling many centuries in the Egypt, the Children of Israel had begun to deem the cow very sacred, so they supposed that perhaps Moses (peace be upon Him) was mocking with them. Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) removed their doubt and made them to understand that the Prophets (peace be upon Them) mock never in the religious matters and in the commands of God Almighty. Mocking others is a job of the stupid. Wise people do never commit the acts like this which are contrary to the dignity, honor and glory, and which becomes cause of disgrace of the religion.

An admonition for the God-fearing - Quran Chptr 2-66 (Pt-1, Stg-1)(L–99)-درس قرآن

Quran Chapter 2-66 (Pt-1, Stg-1) (L-99) - درس قرآن

An admonition for the God-fearing

Surah ‘Al-Baqarah (The Cow) – Chapter – 2)

BisMillaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

66.  So We made it an example to their own and to succeeding generations, and an admonition to the God-fearing.
66.  Faja-‘alNaahaa  nakaalal-limaa  bayna yadayhaa  wa maa khal-fahaa  wa maw-‘izatal-lil-Muttaqiin.

Commentary

Nakaalan – (warning), it means a punishment and incident, which becomes a warning for others, bearing it in mind, the people get admonition.

Purpose of narrating the important events of the history of Israelite in Holy Qur’aan, on one side is that, the Children of Israel feel repentance and be much ashamed. They recognize their reality and incline towards the straight path. And on the other side, it is an admonition for the Muslims. They get it as warning from the incidents of previous nations, check an account of their deeds, take a lesson and adjust themselves in the light of Holy Qur’aan.

Which event we have discussed in the previous verse that has much importance in the history of the Children of Israel and all these people know it very well. The Holy Qur’aan is drawing their attention also towards that incident.

After expressing the incident, Holy Qur’aan declared in this verse, “So We made it an example to their own and to succeeding generations, and an admonition to the God-fearing”. So that, the entire human beings are informed about the result of disobeying the commands of God Almighty, they may be careful for ever and each moment. It is the fact that this incident is a Guide for particularly God-fearing individuals. Their belief may be perfect with it that only the fear of God is root cause of the all goodness for human beings.

After understanding this verse, now there is no doubt that certainly disobeying the commands of God Almighty becomes main cause of a big wrath. We should keep it always before us. It is not an ordinary thing: Changing of good faces into bad and becoming apes from the mankind. The human beings should keep on having fear the wrath and anger of God Almighty.

It also comes out from this verse that how much an individual can get admonition from the previous events. In fact, this Holy Qur’aan (the Word of God) has impressed upon the minds very clearly about the benefits of the history and that, every incident or event cannot become history. Only those events deserve to become a part of history from which, the people may acquire any fair lesson.

Punishment for those who broke the Sabbath - Quran Chptr 2-65 (Pt-1, Stg-1)(L–98)-درس قرآن

Quran Chapter 2-65 (Pt-1, Stg-1) (L-98) - درس قرآن

Punishment for those who broke the Sabbath

Surah ‘Al-Baqarah (The Cow) – Chapter – 2)

BisMillaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

65.  And ye know of those of you who broke the Sabbath, so We said unto them: Be ye apes, despised and hated.
65.  Wa  laqad  ‘alim-tumul-laziina’-tadaw  minkum fis-Sabti  fa-qulNaa lahum  kuunuu  qira-datan khaasi-‘iin.

Commentary

Minkum – (those of you), it signifies towards the fathers and ancestors; forefathers of the Children of Israel.

‘As-Sabt – (the day of “Saturday”) Literal meaning of Sabt is Saturday. As, near to Christians ‘Sunday’ is a holy day and Muslims celebrate ‘Friday’ as the Holy Day, like this; the Jews count ‘Saturday’ as their holy day. Saturday was specified only for the worship of God near to them. Worldly works like business, agriculture or hunting were forbidden for them on that day.

‘A’-tadaw – (not observed temperateness, crossed the limits) they crossed the limits of Divine Law.

It has come in the Sayings that during the time of Prophet David (peace be upon Him); many Jews were living in Ailah (a place in the south of Palestine). This occurrence belongs to that population. Those people used to disobey the commandments of God Almighty with cleverness and tactfully. They were instructed that they should not hunt the fish on Saturday absolutely. God Almighty desired to examine them too. The fish used to come often near the bank of river on Saturday in much quantity.

The Jews planned tactfully to carry on the outward form of the orders of God Almighty. They used to dig pit holes near the bank of river on Saturday. Large quantity of the fish used to inter in those pit holes along with water. Then they used to close the way of water from the river side towards the pit holes. Next day they used to hunt the fish from the pit holes. Due to disobeying God Almighty continuously, they were punished, were formed as apes   and their faces were changed from good to bad.

It appears from this verse that some commands come from God Almighty only for examining. It is the aim of test “to clarify that the servants of God Almighty remain obedient in the both situations i.e. during rest and hard period. If the human being comes out with credit in the situation of test, there are a lot of facilities for him, but punishment is very tough for the impatient and evil doers.

Biggest support for mankind - Grace of Allah - Quran Chptr 2-64 (Pt-1, Stg-1)(L–97)-درس قرآن

Quran Chapter 2-64 (Pt-1, Stg-1) (L-97) - درس قرآن

Biggest support for mankind - Grace of Allah

Surah ‘Al-Baqarah (The Cow) – Chapter – 2)

BisMillaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

64.  Then, even after that, ye turned away, and if it had not been for the Grace of Allah upon you and His mercy ye had been among the losers.
64.  Summa tawal-laytum-mim-ba’-di  zaalik.  Falaw- laa  faz-lUllaahi  ‘alaykum  wa rahmatu-Huu la-kuntum-minal-khaasi-riin.

Commentary

Khaasi-riin – (the losers), this word has been derived from the word Khasaara which means “the damage; the loss, the deficiency”. Therefore, khaasi-riin will be meant as the individuals who suffer loss, who ruin their existing lives as well as their end (the Day of Resurrection).

History of the Children of Israel tells that God Almighty bestowed upon them a lot of Kindness and favors but they disobeyed always instead of obeying and adopted thankless behavior instead of being thankful to Him. Allah Almighty saved them from the slavery of Pharaoh, and commanded them that they should live in the forests of the Peninsula of Sinai, so that the virtues and feelings of an independent and crusader nation may be produced into them due to passing their lives in the desert and village atmosphere. They might get rid of the affects of their long time slavery, but they did not like it. They demanded township life, so that they might eat different kinds of fruit, they might pass their lives with laziness and inactively. God Almighty fulfilled their wishes too.

They used to insist from the Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) that He should bring for them a Guide Book, so that they might follow it. God Almighty bestowed for them Holy Book named Torah and got promise from them that they would follow it always and would never get ready for violence.

After the Revelation of Torah, they broke the faith and began to disobey the Commands of Torah. God Almighty forgave their error and mischief also. If there would not be His Mercy and Kindness on them then the Children of Israel might be ruined and disgraced at the spot in this world besides being entitled of the wrath on the Day of Resurrection.

God Almighty admonished the Children of Israel with His Kindness by sending His Prophets Solomon, David, Samuel and others (peace be upon Them), and showed them the straight path. Those Prophets (peace be upon Them) tried their best to bring them unto the straight path. It was Bounty of God Almighty, otherwise the Children of Israel had arranged for themselves to be ruined.

Biggest support for the life of human beings and their safety is Mercy and Kindness of God Almighty. If He does not keep His Mercy and Kindness, and does not ignore their errors then there is no room for any individual anywhere.

Mount Sinai was raised over the Jews - Quran Chptr 2-63 (Pt-1, Stg-1)(L–96)-درس قرآن

Quran Chapter 2-63 (Pt-1, Stg-1) (L-96) - درس قرآن

Mount Sinai was raised over the Jews

Surah ‘Al-Baqarah (The Cow) – Chapter – 2)

BisMillaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

63.  And (remember, O Children of Israel) when We made a covenant with you and caused the (Mount) Toor to tower above you, (saying): Hold fast that which We have given you, and remember that which is therein, that ye may ward off (evil).
63.  Wa ‘iz ‘akhazNaa Miisaaqa-kum wa rafa’-Naa fawqa-kumut-Tuur. Khuzuu maaa ‘aatay-Naakum-  bi-quwwatinw-waz – kuruu maa fiihi  Ia-‘allakum tattaquun.

Commentary

At-Tuur – (Toor), as per Arabic language, every mountain is called Toor. A particular Mountain in the peninsula of Sinai is also named as ‘Toor’. That is called “Jabal-ut-Toor” too.

‘Az–kuruu maa fiihi – (remember that which is therein), remember the subjects which exist in Holy Scripture Torah, so that you may act upon them. Acting upon them is the main necessity for remembering the commandments of God Almighty.

Tattaquun – (having fear of God) this word is from “Taqwaa”. To ward off evil and to pass the life carefully is called Taqwaa. That is called abstinence, control of the passions also. Who has good nature, is a well wisher and has a good disposition, is named “muttaqii”. Islam has stated it as a great excellence and perfection of mankind.

The Children of Israel used to demand obstinately to bring a genuine Book of Orders, so that they might act upon it. These people used to promise that they would follow completely on the religious matters. But when they were given the Scripture Torah, they began to oppose it and say that the Orders mentioned in Torah are very heavy and difficult. We cannot act upon them.

To challenge them from disobeying and violence, Allah Almighty ordered the Mount Toor which was elevated over their heads. Observing it, the Children of Israel began to shiver (for afraid of their death) and they had lost the courage of opposing, and then they admitted the Laws of Torah under compulsion.

At this stage, a covenant was taken from the Children of Israel, “You will neither dispute nor play the stratagems and argue to believe in the Holy Scripture “Torah”. They were also told to make the law of passing their lives according to the Orders and Commandments of this Heavenly Book, abide by them, so that fear of God Almighty is produced in their hearts and “ye may ward off (evil).”
