BisMillaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the
Merciful
68. They said: Pray for us unto thy
Lord that He make clear to us what (cow) she is. (Moses) answered: Lo! He
saith: Verily she is a cow neither with calf nor immature. (She is) between
the two conditions. So do that which ye are commanded.

Commentary
Maa hiya – {what (cow) she is}, when the
Children of Israel were commanded that they should sacrifice a cow, then
instead of obeying the commandment immediately, they began to argue; absurd
reasoning. At first they asked about the age of the cow that what she is.
Faarizun – (old), it means such age, after
reaching where, giving birth to a calf would have been stopped i.e. very old.
Bikr – (immature), it aims such cow, which
should be elder than a calf (but any calf should not yet have been born from
it).
‘Awaanun – (between), it aims that the cow
should be of middle-age – neither old and nor a calf.
Commandments of God
Almighty and His Prophets (peace be upon Them) are not without wisdom. However
it is not necessary that every individual may understand its philosophy. So
nobody should argue or hesitate obeying Them and every person should act upon
Their orders/instructions without dispute.
In the beginning,
every commandment/instruction/law was simple and easy, but due to making
differences too small to be important, the orders and laws became difficult and
complicated.
God Almighty
commanded the Children of Israel through Moses (peace be upon Him) that they
should sacrifice a cow. It was entirely a straight and simple order. They had
to sacrifice any cow. But they argued and kept on asking question over
questions. At first they said to the Prophet (peace be upon Him): Do you make fun of us? When the Prophet (peace be upon Him) assured them and said: Allah forbid that I should be among the foolish.
Then the Children of
Israel began to say a new thing: Ask from your God about the age of the cow –
should that be old or young. It was explained that the cow should be of
middle-aged. As though, in the easy commandment they produced themselves a
difficulty.
