Covenant with the Children of Israel

Surah MAAA-‘IDAH (The Table Spread) – Chapter – 5)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)
                                                                               
   وَلَقَدْ أَخَذَ ٱللَّهُ مِيثَٰقَ بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ وَبَعَثْنَا مِنْهُمُ ٱثْنَىْ عَشَرَ نَقِيبًا وَقَالَٱللَّهُ إِنِّى مَعَكُمْ لَئِنْ أَقَمْتُمُ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتَيْتُمُ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَءَامَنتُم بِرُسُلِى وَعَزَّرْتُمُوهُمْ وَأَقْرَضْتُمُ ٱللَّهَ قَرْضًا حَسَنًا لَّأُكَفِّرَنَّ عَنكُمْسَيِّـَٔاتِكُمْ وَلَأُدْخِلَنَّكُمْ جَنَّٰتٍ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلْأَنْهَٰرُ فَمَن كَفَرَ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ مِنكُمْ فَقَدْ ضَلَّ سَوَآءَ ٱلسَّبِيلِ (12 

12.  Allah made a covenant of old with the Children of Israel and We raised among them twelve chieftains. And Allah said: Lo! I am with you. If ye establish worship and pay the poor-due, and believe in My messengers and support them, and lend unto Allah a kindly loan, surely I shall remit your sins, and surely I shall bring you into Gardens underneath which rivers flow. Then whoso among you disbelieveth after this will go astray from a right way.
12.  Wa  laqad  ‘akha-zAllaahu  Miisaaqa  Baniii- ‘Israaa-‘iil.  Wa  ba-‘asNaa  min-humus-nay-  ‘ashara  Naqiibaa.  Wa  qaa-lAllaahu  ‘iNNii  ma-‘akum.  La-‘in  ‘aqamtumus-Salaata  wa  ‘aatay-tumuz-Zakaata  wa  ‘aamantum-  bi-rusulii  wa-‘az-zar-tumuuhum  wa ‘aqraz-tumUllaaha  Qar-zan  Hasanal-  la-‘ukaffiranNa  ‘ankum  sayyi-‘aatikum  wa  la-‘udkhi-lannakum  Jannaatin-  tajrii  min-  tahtihal- ‘anhaar.  Faman-  kafara  ba’-da  zaalika  minkum  faqad  zalla  sawaaa-‘assabiil.

    Commentary

ba-‘asNaa  - (We raised), it is made from ba-‘asa, which means “to raise, to elevate, to plant, to determine”. 

‘az-zar-tumuuhum – (you support them), ‘azara – means help, strength, corroboration. From the same word ‘azara, a word ta’-ziir has been made, which means “to strengthen, to support”. 

‘aqraz-tum – it is from ‘aqraaz, which means “to lend”. Qarz means “lending money to someone for the purpose that one may fulfill one’s desire”. Qarz Hasnah is the loan, with which a person wishes to do good for others and one does not think about one’s own benefit. Correct word is Qarz hasan, that is to say; a good loan.

After telling the condition of ancient nations, now it is being advised, “You should not do as they did”. It is commanded that Allah Almighty made a covenant of old with the Children of Israel and raised among them twelve chieftains, so that they lay stress on them to fulfill their undertaking and He said, “I am with you if you:

1.    Established worship.

2.    Paid the poor-due.

3.    Believed in My messengers (peace be upon Them) and supported them.

4.    Lent for spreading the religion of Allah Almighty, which would be considered a kindly loan, you did not wish to acquire worldly advantage”.

Then it has been described that whoso among you will not fulfill these orders, he will go astray from a right way.

Favor of Allah

Surah MAAA-‘IDAH (The Table Spread) – Chapter – 5)

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱذْكُرُوا۟ نِعْمَتَ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ إِذْ هَمَّ قَوْمٌ أَن يَبْسُطُوٓا۟ إِلَيْكُمْ أَيْدِيَهُمْ فَكَفَّأَيْدِيَهُمْ عَنكُمْ وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَعَلَى ٱللَّهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ (11  

11.  O ye who believe! Remember Allah’s Favour unto you, how a people were minded to stretch out their hands against you but He withheld their hands from you; and keep your duty to Allah. And in Allah let believers put their trust.
11.  Yaaa-‘ayyu-hallaziina  ‘aama-nuz-kuruu  ni’-matAllaahi  ‘alaykum  ‘iz  hamma  qawmun  ‘any-yabsutuuu  ‘ilay-kum  ‘aydiyahum  fakaffa  ‘aydiyahum  ‘ankum.  Watta-qUllaah.  Wa  ‘alAllaahi  fal-yatawakkalil- Mu’-minuun.

    Commentary

Hamma – (intended, were minded), it is from hammun, which means “to plan, to intend, to form a design against, to wish”.

Yabsutuuu – (they stretch), this word is from basata, which means “to spread, to stretch, to raise, to encourage”.

 ‘Aydii – (hands), it is plural of yadun, as per Arabic language, it means “hand”. The aim from ‘stretching out their hands’ is “troubling you, fighting against you, attacking upon you”. 

Kaffa – (withheld), it is from kaffun, which means “to restrain from, to keep or hold back”. It aims that Allah Almighty did not let them trouble you and they could not attack upon you.

Before this lesson, the Believers were directed that they should deal justly and play fairly, and were commanded, “Whenever you overcome even upon your old enemies and they surrender and embrace Islam, then you should forget their enmity. After embracing Islam, while they have become your brothers, anyway you should not give up justice and equity with them due to ancient enmity, but you should do such justice with them in all matters as you do among yourselves. It is the teachings of humanity, which is being delivered to the Muslims. Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) caused to know the Muslims by acting upon it Himself that, enmity of any person cannot prevent the Muslims from doing justice with the enemy. No doubt that it is not easy to do good with the bad, and such work can be done only, if someone has virtues of much higher level. Therefore, such matter has been discussed in this verse, due to which, it will become easy to do justice with the enemies. This formula has been told in it that when the enemy is overpowered, then it should be thought that if Allah Almighty had given him victory upon us, then how would we be beaten black and blue? It is the great favor of Allah Almighty that He did not hand over us to the enemies. We should be thankful to Him in such a manner that we should do acts of kindness with the enemy according to the command of Allah Almighty after defeating him and do justice. If any temptation encloses your heart that the people will get the upper hand upon you due to forgiving the enemy and they will consider it your weakness, then forget this reflection. Because that God, Who saved you earlier from their hands, He will save you again in future too. Therefore, Allah Almighty has emphasized the Muslims, “Do not fear people, but fear Me and remember that actual weapon of the Believers is, “They should trust only in Allah Almighty in every affair”.

The End of the Righteous and the wrongdoers

Surah MAAA-‘IDAH (The Table Spread) – Chapter – 5)

وَعَدَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ لَهُم مَّغْفِرَةٌ وَأَجْرٌ عَظِيمٌ (9

 وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ وَكَذَّبُوا۟بِـَٔايَٰتِنَآ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْجَحِيمِ (10  

9.  Allah hath promised those who believe and do good works: Theirs will be forgiveness and immense reward.

10.  And they who disbelieve and deny Our Revelations, such are rightful owners of Hell.
9.  Wa-‘adAllaa-hullaziina  ‘aamanuu  wa  ‘amilus-Saali-haati,  lahum-magfiratunw-wa  ‘ajrun  ‘aziim.

10.  Wallaziina kafaruu  wa  kaz-zabuu  bi-‘Aayaa-tiNaaa  ‘ulaaa-‘ika  ‘As-haabul-Jahiim.

    Commentary

‘As-haabu – (companions, friends), it is plural of Saahib, which means “a follower (who lives with), a comrade”. Simply its meanings also are “Owners” as “owner of the wealth”, likewise, meanings of ‘As-haabul-Jahiim will be “rightful owners of the Hell”.

It has been being described in the previous verses continuously that the believers should do gladly all such works, which are compulsory to be done by them because Allah Almighty has bestowed upon them countless favors, kindness and blessings. It has become incumbent for you to obey Him, when you have believed in Him as your Creator, Lord and Worshipped. Then He caused to hear you His some commandments. After that, He described extract of entire religion in two sentences, from which it is known that the Muslims have to do two kinds of deeds:

1.    Worship of God (Allah Almighty)

2.    Justice and equity with the creature.

Allah Almighty has promised with the believers that He will forgive their errors mercifully. And not only this, but He has also promised that they will be given big rewards as retaliation of their good works and they will live in the Gardens peacefully, satisfactorily and cheerfully.

Therefore, it should not be considered that there is no fruit of good works in the world. Allah Almighty will direct the good-doers towards the Straight Path by saving them from errors in the world too, as well as on the Day of Resurrection, many big rewards will be for them and they will live happily forever.

Then, it has been commanded, “Those people, who disbelieved in Allah Almighty, denied His Revelations and did not acknowledge the advice of His Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him), such people should understand carefully that the end of their evil deeds will not be good. May be they are given some respite in the world, so that perhaps, they begin to believe anytime by using their sense and give up infidelity. But after death, if they died in the form of disbelieving, they will be rightful owners of the Hell and will become fuel of the Fire.

Justice and impartiality

Surah MAAA-‘IDAH (The Table Spread) – Chapter – 5)

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ كُونُوا۟ قَوَّٰمِينَ لِلَّهِ شُهَدَآءَ بِٱلْقِسْطِ وَلَا يَجْرِمَنَّكُمْ شَنَـَٔانُ قَوْمٍ عَلَىٰٓ أَلَّا تَعْدِلُوا۟ ٱعْدِلُوا۟ هُوَ أَقْرَبُ لِلتَّقْوَىٰ وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ خَبِيرٌۢ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ 8  

8.  O ye who believe! Be steadfast witnesses for Allah in equity, and let not hatred of any people seduce you that ye deal not justly. Deal justly, that is nearer to your duty; and observe your duty to Allah. Lo! Allah is Aware of what ye do.
8.  Yaaa-‘ayyu-hallaziina  ‘aamanuu  kuunuu  qawwaa-miina  Lillaahi  shuhadaaa-‘a  bil-qisti  wa  laa  yajri-mannakum  shana-‘aanu  qawmin  ‘alaaa  ‘allaa  ta’-diluu.  ‘I’-diluu:  huwa  ‘aqrabu  lit-taq-waa;  watta-qUllaah.  ‘In-nAllaaha  khabiirum-bimaa  ta’-maluun.

    Commentary

It was uttered with emphasis in the previous verses that the people should fulfill their undertakings with Allah Almighty. In this verse, its one part has been described clearly. This covenant is also hidden in the testimony of Kalimah, “I shall correct my all deeds in accordance with the commands of Allah Almighty”. It has been described here more openly.

Allah Almighty indicates here, “The Belief demands from you to complete two things:

1.    Be ready always to obey Him, bearing in mind Allah’s favors and blessings, and worship Him according to His Instructions.  

2.    Render those people their dues completely, with whom you pass your social life.
                                        
The Belief desires two things from the believers:

1.    Observe your duty to Allah Almighty.

2.    Treat His servants (the humankind) suitably.


It is the summary of the entire religion, which has been mentioned in these two commands:
  
1.    kuunuu  qawwaa-miina  Lillaahi  - (Be steadfast for Allah)

2.    shuhadaaa-‘a  bil-qisti  (witnesses in equity)

We have recited a verse like this, at the end of Wal-Muh-sanaati (Part -5), in Chapter (Surah) Nisaaa’. These two orders were mentioned there as (1).  kuunuu  qawwaa-miina  bil-qisti  and (2).  kuunuu  shuhadaaa-‘a . There, the mention is about “the behavior with human beings in equity” at first, and then, the description is about “observing the duty to (steadfastness for) Allah Almighty”. Here at first is, mention about “steadfastness for Allah Almighty” and then “behavior with the human beings in equity”. That is to say; both orders have been stressed equally and the both duties should be observed side by side. The duty to Allah Almighty would be observed in this manner, “Worship Him”, and the way of treating the people would be in the manner, “Bear in mind the justice and equity in every matter”.

‘Adl means, “To render everyone his/her complete due. Nobody should take part in such a matter, in which there is any chance of violation of one’s right, even that the act of justice should be equally also with the enemy and he should not be deprived of his lawful right due to enmity. Taqwaa (quality of being pious) can be obtained at such time, when level of morality is so much high. Taqwaa means “To escape from evil deeds and sins due to fear of Allah Almighty”.
