Condition of the Christians - Quran Chapter 5 – 14 (Pt-6, Stg-2) (L-656) - درس قرآن

Quran Chapter 5- 14 (Pt-6, Stg-2) (L-656) - درس قرآن

Condition of the Christians

Surah MAAA-‘IDAH (The Table Spread) – Chapter – 5)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

14.  And with those who say: “Lo! We are Christians,” We made a covenant, but they forgot a part of that whereof they were admonished. And therefore We have stirred up enmity and hatred among them till the Day of Resurrection. And Allah will inform them of their handiwork.
14.  Wa  minal-laziina  qaaluu  ‘innaa  Nasaaraaa  ‘akhaz-Naa  Misaa-qahum  fanasuu  hazzam-mimmaa  zukkiruu  bih;  fa-‘agrayNaa  bayna-humul-‘adaawata  wal-bagzaaa-‘a  ‘ilaa  Yawmil-Qiyaamah.  Wa  sawfa  yunabbi-‘uhumUllaahu  bimaa  kaanuu  yasna-‘uun.

    Commentary

Nasaaraaa- either this word has come out from nasar, which means “to help”, if so, then it means “the helper, the supporter”, or it has a relation with Naasirah, which is name of a village in Syria, where Prophet Christ (peace be upon Him) used to live, and due to this reason, He (peace be upon Him) is called Messiah Nasrii. In view of this illustration, Nasaaraaa means ‘The believers of Messiah (peace be upon Him), Who belonged to Naasirah’.

‘AgrayNaa – (We stirred up), it is from ‘agraaa, which means “to induce, to incite, to create, to apply, to put to work”.

Yunabbi-‘u- (to inform), it has been made from nabaaa-‘a, which means “the news”. It aims that Allah Almighty will inform them.

Yasna-‘uun – (that, what they used to do), it is from san-‘at, which means “to make something, to do any work”.

In this verse, there is mention about the Christians. Allah  Almighty commands here, “We made a covenant with them because they had believed in Prophet Jesus (peace be upon Him) and it was their covenant that they would obey Him (peace be upon Him). But afterwards, they broke the covenant too and like the Jews, they also became disobedient. They forgot fundamental commandments out of those, which were revealed for them in the New Testament (the Gospel), and changed its words and meanings in accord with their own desires, so they were deprived of their advantages. The biggest information into those commandments was, “after the Prophet Christ (peace be upon Him), the Last Apostle of Allah Almighty (Muhammad) (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) will come in the world. You should help Him and obey Him wholeheartedly”. But they removed His name and entire description about Him (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) from their Scripture.

It has been told in this verse, “It is the result of forgetting the original teachings of the Scripture that if a person said anything, the other said against it. This mutual contradiction increased so much that they became enemies of one another. On one side, enmity among the Jews and the Christians was produced, secondly, the Jews themselves were opponents mutually of each other, and on the other side, different sects of the Christians began to fight against one another.

Mutual cooperation can be produced only by acting upon the original commandments of the Scripture. The Scriptures held with the Jews and the Christians, are not in their original form. Therefore, they will be fighting always until the end of this world, because now, there is nothing remained to settle their mutual conflicts. Now there is no way of their becoming conscious except that they would have to believe in Holy Qur’aan, the Last Scripture.

The Children of Israel broke the Covenant - Quran Chapter 5 – 13 (Pt-6, Stg-2) (L-655) - درس قرآن

Quran Chapter 5- 13 (Pt-6, Stg-2) (L-655) - درس قرآن

The Children of Israel broke the Covenant

Surah MAAA-‘IDAH (The Table Spread) – Chapter – 5)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

13.  And because of their breaking their covenant, We have cursed them and made hard their hearts. They change words from their context and forget a part of that whereof they were admonished. And thou will not cease to discover treachery from all save a few of them, but pardon them and bear with them. Lo! Allah loveh the kindly.
13.  Fabimaa  naqzihim-Miisaa-qahum  la-‘anNaahum  wa  ja-‘alNaa  quluubahum  qaasi-yah.  Yuharri-fuunal-kalima  ‘am-mawaazi-‘ihii  wa  nasuu  hazzam-mimmaa  zukkiruu  bih.  Wa  laa  tazaalu  tattali-‘u  ‘alaa  khaaa-‘ina-tim-minhum  ‘illaa  qaliilam-min-hum  fa’-fu  ‘anhum  wasfah.  ‘InnAllaaha  yuhibbul-Muhsiniin.

    Commentary

La-‘anNaa – (We have cursed), it is from la’-nat, which means “to expel, to force out, to eject, to curse, to do outcast”. It aims, “We have cursed from Our mercy”.

Yuharri-fuuna  (they change), it is from tah-riif, which has been derived from harf. Harf means “edge, boundary, and side”. Tah-riif means “to curse, to displace anything”.

Zukkiruu – (for admonishing), it is from taz-kiir, which has been derived from zikr. Zikr means “to remember”. Taz-kiir means “to remind, to tell the word of advantage”.

’Asfah – (bear with them), it is from safah, which means “to shrink from, to retire, to turn the face, not to care, to let go, to excuse, to pardon”.

Allah Almighty says that the Jews broke the covenant after promising and did not fulfill the responsibility, which they accepted. Resultantly they have been deprived of Our kindness. It is a very big sin to break the covenant with Allah Almighty. The person, whoso will commit this crime, his/her heart will become hard due to its burden and no good advice will have any effect on him/her, and he/she will be deprived of the Mercy of Allah Almighty.

The Children of Israel changed the words and meanings of Torah (the Heavenly Scripture), and forgot those commands, which were for their benefit, and did not care a little, the matters which were very useful for them. One of those advices was that “Last Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) will come towards you, “Obey Him”. They deleted this advice and by changing the words, they produced some other meanings.

Now they are in such condition that any of their deceiving, imposture or mischief come before you often, and except a few of them, who have believed as AbdUllaah bin Salaam and his companions (may Allah be pleased with them) etc., remaining entire people are dishonest and deceitful. Do good even then with them in retaliation of their wrongdoing against you, and do not quarrel with them openly, because the enemy insists more due to rebuking and reproving him/her every time. Treat them good because Allah Almighty likes them, who are kind.

Covenant with the Children of Israel - Quran Chapter 5 – 12 (Pt-6, Stg-2) (L-654) - درس قرآن

Quran Chapter 5- 12 (Pt-6, Stg-2) (L-654) - درس قرآن

Covenant with the Children of Israel

Surah MAAA-‘IDAH (The Table Spread) – Chapter – 5)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

12.  Allah made a covenant of old with the Children of Israel and We raised among them twelve chieftains. And Allah said: Lo! I am with you. If ye establish worship and pay the poor-due, and believe in My messengers and support them, and lend unto Allah a kindly loan, surely I shall remit your sins, and surely I shall bring you into Gardens underneath which rivers flow. Then whoso among you disbelieveth after this will go astray from a right way.
12.  Wa  laqad  ‘akha-zAllaahu  Miisaaqa  Baniii- ‘Israaa-‘iil.  Wa  ba-‘asNaa  min-humus-nay-  ‘ashara  Naqiibaa.  Wa  qaa-lAllaahu  ‘iNNii  ma-‘akum.  La-‘in  ‘aqamtumus-Salaata  wa  ‘aatay-tumuz-Zakaata  wa  ‘aamantum-  bi-rusulii  wa-‘az-zar-tumuuhum  wa ‘aqraz-tumUllaaha  Qar-zan  Hasanal-  la-‘ukaffiranNa  ‘ankum  sayyi-‘aatikum  wa  la-‘udkhi-lannakum  Jannaatin-  tajrii  min-  tahtihal- ‘anhaar.  Faman-  kafara  ba’-da  zaalika  minkum  faqad  zalla  sawaaa-‘assabiil.

    Commentary

ba-‘asNaa  - (We raised), it is made from ba-‘asa, which means “to raise, to elevate, to plant, to determine”.

‘az-zar-tumuuhum – (you support them), ‘azara – means help, strength, corroboration. From the same word ‘azara, a word ta’-ziir has been made, which means “to strengthen, to support”.

‘aqraz-tum – it is from ‘aqraaz, which means “to lend”. Qarz means “lending money to someone for the purpose that one may fulfill one’s desire”. Qarz Hasnah is the loan, with which a person wishes to do good for others and one does not think about one’s own benefit. Correct word is Qarz hasan, that is to say; a good loan.

After telling the condition of ancient nations, now it is being advised, “You should not do as they did”. It is commanded that Allah Almighty made a covenant of old with the Children of Israel and raised among them twelve chieftains, so that they lay stress on them to fulfill their undertaking and He said, “I am with you if you:

1.    Established worship.

2.    Paid the poor-due.

3.    Believed in My messengers (peace be upon Them) and supported them.

4.    Lent for spreading the religion of Allah Almighty, which would be considered a kindly loan, you did not wish to acquire worldly advantage”.

Then it has been described that whoso among you will not fulfill these orders, he will go astray from a right way.

Favor of Allah - Quran Chapter 5 – 11 (Pt-6, Stg-2) (L-653) - درس قرآن

Quran Chapter 5- 11(Pt-6, Stg-2) (L-653) - درس قرآن

Favor of Allah

Surah MAAA-‘IDAH (The Table Spread) – Chapter – 5)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

11.  O ye who believe! Remember Allah’s Favour unto you, how a people were minded to stretch out their hands against you but He withheld their hands from you; and keep your duty to Allah. And in Allah let believers put their trust.
11.  Yaaa-‘ayyu-hallaziina  ‘aama-nuz-kuruu  ni’-matAllaahi  ‘alaykum  ‘iz  hamma  qawmun  ‘any-yabsutuuu  ‘ilay-kum  ‘aydiyahum  fakaffa  ‘aydiyahum  ‘ankum.  Watta-qUllaah.  Wa  ‘alAllaahi  fal-yatawakkalil- Mu’-minuun.

    Commentary

Hamma – (intended, were minded), it is from hammun, which means “to plan, to intend, to form a design against, to wish”.

Yabsutuuu – (they stretch), this word is from basata, which means “to spread, to stretch, to raise, to encourage”.

‘Aydii – (hands), it is plural of yadun, as per Arabic language, it means “hand”. The aim from ‘stretching out their hands’ is “troubling you, fighting against you, attacking upon you”.

Kaffa – (withheld), it is from kaffun, which means “to restrain from, to keep or hold back”. It aims that Allah Almighty did not let them trouble you and they could not attack upon you.

Before this lesson, the Believers were directed that they should deal justly and play fairly, and were commanded, “Whenever you overcome even upon your old enemies and they surrender and embrace Islam, then you should forget their enmity. After embracing Islam, while they have become your brothers, anyway you should not give up justice and equity with them due to ancient enmity, but you should do such justice with them in all matters as you do among yourselves. It is the teachings of humanity, which is being delivered to the Muslims. Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) caused to know the Muslims by acting upon it Himself that, enmity of any person cannot prevent the Muslims from doing justice with the enemy. No doubt that it is not easy to do good with the bad, and such work can be done only, if someone has virtues of much higher level. Therefore, such matter has been discussed in this verse, due to which, it will become easy to do justice with the enemies. This formula has been told in it that when the enemy is overpowered, then it should be thought that if Allah Almighty had given him victory upon us, then how would we be beaten black and blue? It is the great favor of Allah Almighty that He did not hand over us to the enemies. We should be thankful to Him in such a manner that we should do acts of kindness with the enemy according to the command of Allah Almighty after defeating him and do justice. If any temptation encloses your heart that the people will get the upper hand upon you due to forgiving the enemy and they will consider it your weakness, then forget this reflection. Because that God, Who saved you earlier from their hands, He will save you again in future too. Therefore, Allah Almighty has emphasized the Muslims, “Do not fear people, but fear Me and remember that actual weapon of the Believers is, “They should trust only in Allah Almighty in every affair”.
