Reward of Belief - Quran Chapter 5 – 85 & 86 (Pt-7, Stg-2) (L-728) -

Quran Chapter 5- 85 & 86 (Pt-7, Stg-2) (L-728) -

Reward of Belief

Surah MAAA-‘IDAH (The Table Spread) – Chapter – 5)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

85.  Therefore Allah hath rewarded them for their saying so - Gardens underneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide for ever. And that is the reward of the good.

86.  But those who disbelieved and denied Our Revelations, they are owners of Hell-fire.
85. Fa-‘asaabahu-mUllaahu  bimaa  qaaluu  jannaatin-  tajrii  min-  tahtihal- ‘anhaaru  khaalidiina  fiihaa.  Wa  zaalika jazaaa-‘ul-  Muh-siniin.

86. Wallaziina  kafaruu wa kazzabuu  bi-‘Aayaa-tiNaaa ‘ulaaa-‘ika  ‘As-haabul-Jahiim.

Commentary

‘Asaaba – (rewarded), it is from ‘asaabata, which has been derived from Sawaab, it means ‘the future reward of a virtue’. ‘Asaaba means rewarded.

‘As-haabun – (owners), it is plural of Saahib, which has come out from Suhbat. Suhbat means ‘society, company, and meeting etc’. Saahib means ‘companion, friend, guardian of anything forever’. Along with any other word, its meaning will become ‘owner’. ‘As-haabul-jannah means ‘the owners of the Paradise’, and ‘As-haabul-Jahiim (Naar) - ‘the owners of Hell-fire’.

The people who heard Holy Qur’aan from Prophet Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) and said, “He (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) is a True Messenger, and this (Holy Qur’aan) is a True Scripture”, for them Allah Almighty has suggested a very good reward in retaliation of their saying so, which will be given to them in the Hereafter and since Allah Almighty shall fulfill His promise surely, therefore; it is commanded in this verse, “(Allah) has rewarded them”.

Many of these people were the Christians and less in numbers were the Jews, who believed by listening to the Holy Qur’aan. Due to this reason, it was described in the previous verses, that the Jews are vehement in enmity of the Muslims but the Christians are not too much severe. After that, it has been explained that it does not depend on the Christians or the Jews. Which nation would have these qualities i.e. the knowledge of the religion, disinclination from the worldly gains and having not haughtiness, that nation will begin to love the Muslims very soon; otherwise they will be vehement in enmity of the Muslims.

It is commanded that Allah Almighty will reward them (Believers) green and irrigated Gardens, underneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever. And that is the reward of the righteous.

Then it is commanded: The people; who disbelieve and falsify the Revelations sent by Us, their punishment is that they will be burnt in the Fire of the Hell for ever.

Sign of being softhearted - Quran Chapter 5 – 83 & 84 (Pt-7, Stg-2) (L-727) -

Quran Chapter 5- 83 & 84 (Pt-7, Stg-2) (L-727) -

Sign of being softhearted

Surah MAAA-‘IDAH (The Table Spread) – Chapter – 5)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

83.  AND WHEN THEY LISTEN TO that which hath been revealed unto the Messenger, thou seest their eyes overflow with tears because of their recognition of the Truth. They say: Our Lord! We have believed; so inscribe us as among the witnesses.

84.  And why should we not believe in Allah and that which hath come unto us of the Truth; and (why should we not) hope that our Lord will bring us in along with righteous folk?
83.  WA  ‘IZAA  SAMI-‘UU  maaa    ‘unzila  ‘ilar-Rasuuli  taraaa  ‘a’-yunahum  tafiizu  minaddam-‘i  mimmaa  ‘arafuu  minal-Haqq.  Yaquu-luuna  Rabbanaaa  ‘aamannaa  fak-tubnaa  ma-‘ash-shaahidiin.

84.  Wa  maa  lanaa  laa  nu’-minu  BIllaahi  wa  maa  jaaa-‘anaa  minal-Haqqi  ,  wa  natma-‘u  ‘any- yud-khilanaa  Rabbunaa  ma-‘al  qawmis-Saalihiin.

Commentary

Tafiizu – (overflow), here it aims that their eyes are filled with too much tears that they overflow and the tears come out from the eyes.

Shaahidiina – it is plural of Shaahid. The person, who recognizes and believes in the Truth, is called Shaahid.

The difference between the Jews and the Christians of those days has been shown in this verse. The Jews were as much vehement in hostility against the Muslims that when they used to listen to the Holy Qur’aan, made it a jest. On the contrary, the Christians used to shed tears due to effect of the Truth, when they used to hear the verses of Holy Qur’aan.

1.    When some Muslims migrated from Makkah to Ethiopia under compulsion and they caused to hear some verse from Surah Maryam – 19 (Mary) of Holy Qur’aan to Negus, the King of Ethiopia, at that time, the King was so impressed that he began to weep and believed in the Truth of Holy Qur’aan

2.    When some Christians came towards the Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) as representatives of the Christians and listened to the Holy Qur’aan, their hearts had been touched too much that the tears began to shed from their eyes. They believed in its Truth and said, “Our Lord! We have believed; so inscribe us as among the witnesses. And why should we not believe in Allah and that which has come unto us of the Truth; and why should we not hope that our Lord will bring us in along with righteous folk?”

Causes that the Christians have soft-hearts - Quran Chapter 5 – 82b (Pt-6, Stg-2) (L-726) -

Quran Chapter 5- 82b (Pt-6, Stg-2) (L-726) -

Causes that the Christians have soft-hearts

Surah MAAA-‘IDAH (The Table Spread) – Chapter – 5)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

82b.  That is because there are among them priests and monks, and because they are not proud.
82b.  Zaalika  bi-‘anna  minhum  Qissii-siina  wa  Ruhbaananw-wa  ‘annahum  laa  yas-takbiruun.

Commentary

Qissii-siina – is plural of Qissiis, which means ‘a Scholar’ as you can say ‘a Clergyman, a Chaplain or a Missionary’.

Ruhbaanu – is plural of Raahib, which means ‘a Priest, a Saint or a Dervish’.

As it has been mentioned in the previous lesson, “the most vehement of Muslims in hostility are the Jews and the Idolaters. On the contrary, there are those people, who say: “We are Christians”. Allah Almighty commanded about them, “Thou will find the nearest of them in affection”. One might understand from it that the Jews and the Idolaters would be enemies of the Muslims forever, and the Christians can be friends forever. But it has been cleared at the end of the verse that it is not true to make it a rule. Moreover, dependence of the foe or the friend with Muslims is on some virtues.

When the Holy Qur’aan was revealed, these virtues did not exist in the Jews and the Idolaters, while in the Christians existed. If ever these virtues would not remain in the Christians, they can also be the enemies of the Muslims. In today’s lesson, two virtues have been described. Detail of remaining virtues will be disclosed in next verses.

It is commanded that reason of enmity of the Jews and the Idolaters with the Muslims and proportionately nearness of the Christians, is that the Christians do not have disease of considering themselves most superior to entire other people. Here it is necessary to be understood that the Jews of that time were entirely untutored from the correct knowledge of the religion.

At variance to them, the Christians disclosed on many situations that they have more knowledge about the religious matters. It has appeared from all this discussion that the Jews were hard-hearted and stubborn. It is the sign of ignorance and folly. They were very avaricious of wealth and property, and used to remain every time in the wish of their own interest. It is the token of worldly love. They considered themselves most superior directly. It is evident that they had fallen in haughtiness. That person will be enemy of good people, who would have these qualities, whether he is a Jew, a Christian or an Idolater. Moreover, if any Muslim has also involved in these evils, he will become foe too of the good Muslim brothers.

Comparison among the People of the Scripture

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

82a.  Thou will find the most vehement of mankind in hostility to those who believe (to be) the Jews and the idolaters. And Thou will find the nearest of them in affection to those who believe (to be) those who say: Lo! We are Christians.
82a.  Lataji-danna  ‘ashaddannaasi  ‘adaawatal-lil-laziina  ‘aamanul- Yahuuda  wallaziina  ‘ashrakuu.  Wa  latajidanna  ‘aqrabahum-ma-wad-datal-lillaziina  ‘aamanul-laziina  qaaluuu  ‘innaa  Nasaaraa.

Commentary

Many enemies had been born as soon as the religion Islam came into existence. Its main cause was that those people were desirous of only worldly advantages. They wished, “Only we would have to remain excelling above all. Others should serve us under our command and as we say, they should do”. There was no any better result of this desire other than that they used to quarrel with one another every time and obtain the commodities of necessity by snatching from other people.

Islam was desirous to remove these evils and mischief, and to lead them towards the way of mutual brotherhood by assembling all of them on one thought. The selfish people observed their death in it. Everyone conceived, “Chance of our leadership can never come by living in such a cordial manner”.

The most selfish; out of them were the Jews. So they were the most vehement of Islam in hostility. After them, there were the Idolaters of the Arab. They were ignorant and illiterate. While educated people, like the Jews began to oppose, then how could they had to remain behind? They quarreled against the Muslims as much as they could. Reason of these circumstances has been revealed for information of the Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him). It is commanded that the most vehement of the Muslims in hostility are the Jews and the Idolaters because they are consummate selfish.

However the Christians are not too much mortal foe, as the Christian King Negus of Ethiopia gave shelter to the Muslims. Other Christian Kings like Rome etc. did not do insolence of the Messages sent by the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him). On the contrary, the Jews troubled the Muslims very much, poisoned the Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) and tried to kill Him intentionally, when He was careless. They supported the Idolaters during war. So it is known that the Jews and the Idolaters are more hardhearted, and opposite to them; the Christians are more softhearted and sensible.

Friendship of Infidels

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

80.  Thou seest many of them making friends with those who disbelieve. Surely ill for them is that which they themselves send on before them; that Allah will be wroth with them and in the doom they will abide for ever.

81.  If they had believed in Allah and the Prophet and that which is revealed unto Him, they would have not taken them for their friends. But many of them are of evil conduct.
80.  Taraa  kasiiram-minhum  yata-wallaw-nallaziina  kafaruu.  Labi’-sa  maa qaddamat  lahum    ‘anfusahum  ‘an-  sakhi-tAllaahu  ‘alayhim  wa  fil-‘azaabi  hum  khaaliduun.

Commentary

It was described in the previous lesson that wicked deeds had become prevalent in the Children of Israel. After observing their such condition, David and then Jesus (peace be upon them) cursed them. They continued hostility also against the last Messenger of Allah Almighty, Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) during His time.

It has been commanded in this verse that these people have been opposing them still, who are going straight path and they are making friends to those who went astray. They do not understand that it is a very bad act that they provided ground to spread the wickedness and to efface the good deeds. Wrath of Allah Almighty will be descended upon them in the world and on the Doomsday in its punishment.

Then Allah Almighty says, “If they had belief in Allah, His Messengers and Prophets (peace be upon them) and Their Scriptures, then they would have never taken the wicked people, infidels and them for their friends, who are of evil conduct. But these people are very strict disobedient. So we knew from it that actually they do not believe in Allah Almighty and His Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him).

We should think now, “Whether these evils have not entered also into us, which were in the Jews? Is our Belief correct”? Sign of its fairness is that “friendship with the good people and cut off relationship from the evil doers”. Whether we have this beauty? Do we have this? If not, then its remedy is compulsory.

Cause of cursing - Quran Chapter 5 – 78 & 79 (Pt-6, Stg-2) (L-723) -

Quran Chapter 5- 78 & 79 (Pt-6, Stg-2) (L-723) -

Cause of cursing

Surah MAAA-‘IDAH (The Table Spread) – Chapter – 5)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

78.  Those of the Children of Israel who went astray were cursed by the tongue of David, and of Jesus, son of Mary. That was because they rebelled and used to transgress.

79.  They restrained not one another from the wickedness they did. Verily evil was that they used to do!
78.  Lu-‘inallaziina  kafaruu  mim- Baniii- ‘Israaa-‘iila  ‘alaa  lisaani  Daa-wuuda  wa  ‘Iisabni-  Maryam.  Zaalika  bimaa  ‘asw-wa  kaanuu  ya’-taduun.

79.  Kaanuu  laa  yatanaa-hawna  ‘am-munkarin-  fa-‘aluuh.  Labi’-sa  maa  kaanuu  yaf-‘aluun.

Commentary

‘Asw – (they rebelled), it is from ‘isyaan, which means ‘to disobey, to revolt, to shake off subjection). The word ‘Aasii has also been derived from it.

Ya’-taduun – (they used to transgress), this word is from ‘udwaan, which means ‘to violate, to rebel, to tyrannize’.

Laa  yatanaa-hawna – (they did not restrain), it is from tanaa-hii and its origin is nahiiiNahiii means ‘to hold back, to hinder, and to limit’. Tanaa-hii means ‘to be hindered by one own and restrain one another mutually. Here it’s both meanings are correct. However, last meaning has been adopted in the translation.

The Children of Israel were advised commonly in the previous lesson that they should not include such matters in the religion, which do not exist in it, and which have been taken from the old faithless people and idolaters.

In this verse, they have been frightened, “Due to your evil habits, two Messengers of higher position i.e. David and Jesus (peace be upon them) have fixed you duly cursed. If you wish to come out from this curse, then you should embrace Islam, otherwise its result will be very bad for you”.

Allah Almighty commands that David and Jesus (peace be upon them) cursed the disbelievers of the Children of Israel. Three reasons have been described about it:

1.    They rebelled (they had been entangled in the evil deeds).

2.    They violated the limits, set up by the religion and their habit of evil acts had become ordinary.

3.    Neither they prevented themselves from the sins, nor forbade one another from the wickedness.

When the habits of any nation become too much corrupted that the evil is taken as a sport and nobody exists there to stop oneself and to prevent others from wicked deeds, but on the contrary, a coward is considered a good person, then that nation deserves to be cursed. If that nation does not refrain from its misconduct, then it is sure that they will be disgraceful and ruined, because if there is none for asking, then the evil doer never tries himself to abstain from the sins. Then other people get courage too to commit sins. Thus the entire nation is ruined.

Stress in the Religion

Surah MAAA-‘IDAH (The Table Spread) – Chapter – 5)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

77.  Say: O People of the Scripture! Stress not in your religion other than the truth, and follow not the vain desires of folk who erred of old and led many astray, and erred from a right path.
77.  Qul  yaaa-‘Ahlal-Kitaabi  laa  tagluu  fii  Diinikum  gay-ral-haqqi  wa  laa  tattabi-‘uuu  ‘ahwaaa-‘a  qawmin-  qad  zalluu  min-  qablu  wa  ‘azalluu  kasiiran-wa  zalluu  ‘an-  sawaaa-‘issabiil.

Commentary

Laa  tagluu – (Do not stress), this word is from guluu, which means ‘to overstep bounds, to say or do more than the requirement’.

‘Ahwaaa-‘a – (the vain desires), it is plural of Hawaa, which means ‘vain and fabricated desire’.

According to previous verses, Jesus {Messiah (peace be upon Him)} says (himself): O Children of Israel! Worship only God Almighty Who is my Lord and your Lord. Whoso ascribes partners unto Allah Almighty, for him, He has forbidden Paradise. His abode is the Fire. And for evildoers there will be no helpers.

At first, Allah Almighty commands in these verses, “Say: O People of the Scripture! Stress not in your religion other than the truth, and follow not the vain desires of folk who erred of old and led many astray, and erred from a right path”. It signifies towards Gospel, which forbids from ascribing partners to Allah Almighty. But after that, a scholar of the Christians, named Paul, promoted worshiping of idols in his own religion also, when he saw the Romans and the Greeks doing so. And they began to say too their Messenger Jesus Christ (peace be upon him), son of God as the Romans and Grecian used to say their demi-gods as sons of God. And they began to state godhead virtues in Messiah (peace be upon him) also like those demi-gods. Even that the religion of the Christians had become imitation of old wrong religions.

Allah Almighty has described here that they had erred of old (the Romans and the Grecians) and led many astray, and erred from a right path. You should not do like their practices but follow correctly your own Scripture.
