116a.  Qaala  ‘alquu.

Commentary

We recited in the previous verse that respectable courtiers of Pharaoh counseled him that Moses (peace be upon Him) has shown a strange and unusual event of enchantment. There is a fear that He (peace be upon Him) will be able to attract the masses very soon. And then, it will become difficult for us to live here. It is better that His (peace be upon Him) competition should be arranged with the wizards and He should be defeated in common gathering.

It is commanded that the people brought the old expert wizards together from everywhere. As soon as they reached, they said to Pharaoh at first: We shall win with your good fortune. Kindly confirm a tip and our labor compensation even now, which should be given to us after success, so that our hearts may be encouraged and we should try our best to succeed.

Pharaoh said: Yes, surely you shall be granted with heavy compensation and reward along with it; that you shall be of those brought specially near to me and selected individuals. The wizards were happy, turned unto Moses (peace be upon Him) and said: Do you show first your jugglery or we should show?

Human being does not hear any other before his talk. He says: Why should I accept unnecessarily any other as superior to me while I have everything? This stubbornness is found in those people, who get accumulated with a lot of things of every kind and manpower strength, and the people of lower class and the poor begin to consider them a source of their respect by standing before them with folded hands. At that time, as it might be possible, these rich people begin to determine for establishing their power of influence forever. And they try to defeat the opponent of their dignity and majesty as it could be.

In the story of Pharaoh and his chieftains, an utter lesson exists for such people. A time comes when any such power appears with the command of Allah Almighty, which is more powerful than their wealth, equipage and Army, and due to which their entire game is over. Truly: The fox knows much but more knows the one who catches him.

The Sorcerers

Chapter ‘Al-‘A’raaf (The Heights) – Surah – 7)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

109.  The chiefs of Pharaoh’s people said: Lo! this some knowing wizard –

110.  Who would expel you from your land. Now what do ye advise?

111.  They said (unto Pharaoh): Put him off (a while) – him and his brother – and send into the cities summoners –

112.  To bring each knowing wizard unto thee.
109.  Qaalal-mala-‘u  min-  qawmi  Fir-‘awna  ‘inna  haazaa  lasaahirun  ‘aliim.

110.  Yuriidu  ‘any-yukh-rijakum-min  ‘arzikum.  Famaazaa  ta’-muruun.

111.  Qaaluuu  ‘arjih  wa  ‘akhaahu  wa  ‘arsil  fil-madaaa-‘ini  haashiriina –

112.  Ya’-tuuka  bikulli  saahirin ‘aliim.

Commentary

‘Arjih – (Put him off), actually this word is ‘arja’-hu‘Irjaaa’ is word of command, origin of which is ‘irjaaa-‘un, which has been derived from raja-‘unRajaaa’ means strong hopes and expectation.  ‘Irjaaa’ means “to give trust, to cause to wait for”. Here it aims: To put off for some time.

Saahirun – (a wizard), it is a subject, which has been derived from sah-run. This word has passed in Chapter - 2 (Surah‘Al-BaqarahSah-run means enchantment, magic. The reality of the sahar is only so, that an individual establishes his mind on something. When he gets good practice, he puts impact of his perception on the ideas of others and they begin to think as he is thinking. Such individual is called wizard, magician. Saahirun ‘aliim is that individual, who has become at home in his practice of enchantment. After looking the miracles of Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him), the people of Pharaoh began to say: It seems that He (peace be upon Him) is a great wizard.

It is commanded that when chief courtiers of Pharaoh saw the miracles of Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him), they said to Pharaoh: The wizards use to show the conjurations like these. It seems that Moses (peace be upon Him) is an expert magician. It is better that Moses (peace be upon Him) and His Brother should be left in like manner for some days and presently they should not be questioned. We should send our summoners hither and thither in every part of the country, that they search, collect and bring the expert wizards in this court, so that they all collectively break the power of the magic of Moses (peace be upon Him).

Pharaoh considered that his courtiers were saying correct. He determined that miracles of Moses (peace be upon Him) are nothing but an illusion. Ignorance and stupidity of Pharaoh and his people did not let them reach the depth of this matter. Any persistent can do nothing except determination of defeating the opposite and bigotry of his thought. These are manners of own destruction.

Commentary

Pharaoh used to trust in his power very much. To remove his mania, Prophet Moses was given such miracles, due to which, Glory, Dignity and Greatness of Omnipotent and Subduer God was reflected. Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) said in His first Message: O Pharaoh! I have such Tokens, beholding which, you would have to accept yourself helpless and incapable before Most Potent and Superior, Allah.

Pharaoh had apparent powers. Entire wealth of his country was under his possession. The people used to worship and obey him without thinking. Production was in abundance in the country. There were rivers and canals for irrigation. Observing all these things under his control, Pharaoh was unable to understand: Can any other be more powerful than me?

Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) said to him: Allah Almighty is more Powerful than you, Who is Lord of the entire Worlds. Pharaoh said: OK! Have you any token of your God? If you have, produce it also before us. We want to see, which token you have?

It is commanded that Pharaoh said after hearing talks of Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him): If you have really any such token, show us, so that we may know about your truth or a lie. Allah Almighty had told this way already to Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him), He flung down the Staff of His hand without any hesitation. As soon as the staff fell down, it became a big serpent at once and began to hiss and spring towards the people.

It is written that the serpent sprang unto the Pharaoh before the eyes, and on the other side, Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) put his hand beneath his bosom and drew forth. It began to shine like a sun. Even that the eyes of Pharaoh and other people were in the state of being dazzled and their eyes remained fixedly open. Thither, the serpent has been coming duly springing and hissing. And hither shining of the hand of Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) is going to close their eyes.

104.  Moses said: O Pharaoh! Lo! I am a Messenger from the Lord of the Worlds-

105.  Approved upon the condition that I speak concerning Allah nothing but the Truth. I come unto you with a clear proof from your Lord; so let the Children of Israel go with me.
104.  Wa  qaala  Muusaa  yaa-Fir-‘awnu  ‘innii  Rasuulum-mir-Rabbil-‘Aalamiin.

Commentary

Haqiiqun – (approved, constant), this word has been derived from Haqq. Haqq means “right, true, God, justice, truth, reality, firm, fact and gist”. In this verse, last meanings have been taken, that is to say; I cannot turn from this fact that I should deliver the Message of Allah Almighty to you as it is. My selfishness, falsehood or advantage should not just interrupt.

Till now, circumstances of Prophets Adam, Noah, Hud, Salih, Lot and Shu-aib, from the Previous Prophets (peace be upon Them) have been described in this Chapter (Surah). These People (peace be upon Them) had come for removing the specific evils from their personal nations and tribes separately. And because the root of those evils was that the people had forgotten the concept of Real Lord (God Almighty), so They used Their attention to remove that specific evil, which had established into Their nations, after teaching them essential education of Monotheism.

These nations were ruined and destroyed one by one because they did not obey their existing Prophet/Messenger (peace be upon Them). Among the group of those Prophets (peace be upon Them), Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) was appointed to prevent the Children of Israel from tyrant Copts of Egypt, whose cruel and refractory king was Pharaoh. Like the nations of earlier Prophets (peace be upon Them), they (the Copts of Egypt) were ruined and destroyed also who did not obey Moses (peace be upon Him) and He succeeded in setting the Children of Israel free from the grasp of Copts.

Those happenings begin from this verse, which were faced by Moses (peace be upon Him) at the time of fight against Pharaoh. It is commanded that Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) came unto Pharaoh with the Message of Allah Almighty and said: I have been sent by the Lord of this world and am His Messenger. It is my duty to convey His Message up to you correctly. There will be no mistake, adulteration or temperament from me side. I have clear proofs of my Prophet-hood, after which, there should be no doubt in my truth. O Pharaoh! Give up those tyrannies, which you have oppressed upon the Children of Israel and let them go with me, so that I may colonize them in their actual native land and teach them “how to live like humankind”.

Commentary

‘In – (in fact, not only so), usually, the meanings of this word come for “if” and as per Arabic language; it is used as “(on the) condition”, but here, it aims “in fact, really, indeed”, because actual form of this word was ‘innahuu.

Zalamuu – (they repelled), this word has been derived from Zulm, which means ‘tyranny, oppression, not to pay the right of anyone, and if an individual is not treated properly as he deserves’. Here, it aims that it was right of these verses that these would have been accepted as true and correct, but these were not accepted, so it means “those people repelled, drove back or resisted against them”.

It is commanded that two matters were common among all those disobedient nations, circumstances of which have been described so far, and due to adversity of which, they could not reap advantages from the Guidance of Prophets and Messengers (peace be upon Them).

Allah, The Most High; commands: We found most of those people involved in breach of promise, and maximum from them were fearless in committing evils and disobedience.

The commentators of the religion have explained the meaning of covenant as: The covenant “when God Almighty collected the entire souls of (every) humankind before creation of Adam (peace be upon Him) and asked from them “Am I not your Lord (‘Alas-tu bi-Rabbikum)? The souls of mankind replied: Balaaa (Yes! You are our Lord). This was the covenant, which was made by every human being’s soul, they promised that they will obey the Commands of their Lord in the world, and which is being described again and again, further detail of it will be discussed in forthcoming lessons.

Or the covenant mentioned in this verse aims; which the disobedient people used to make with their Prophet (blessing on Him) when they were punished. At that time; they used to say: We shall never disobey the orders of God Almighty in future if we are saved from this wrath at this time. And whenever the wrath was postponed, they used to either forget their covenant or break it intentionally.

Moreover, the sense (meaning) of the verse is common and every human being; who is not committed to his treaty in the world, is included in it. It makes sense that foundation of immorality and being criminal is; that an individual is not bound of his covenant.

Further it is commanded: Now Pharaoh and Moses (peace be upon Him) are mentioned. Pharaoh and his people falsified Our Tokens, which We sent by means of Our Messenger Moses (peace be upon Him). Then behold! What happened to them? At last they were destroyed and ruined.

Commentary

It has been described in the previous verses that when conditions of the dwellers of different parts of the earth were worsen, Allah Almighty sent His Prophets and Messengers (blessings on Them) for their guidance. They caused to understand them: Those works which you are committing have been carrying you towards the destruction. Your Creator has sent Us appointing His Prophet and Messenger (blessings on Them) so that We should cause to know you. Our character is different from you and We have been commanded that We must guide you to go upon the same Path, which We have adopted.

It is commanded that: Whether ruin of earlier disobedient people does not make present people to understand this matter that Allah Almighty can smite these people also due to their sins and evil deeds like them? If these people do not understand this a little matter then obviously there is no space for any good in their hearts except their obscene thoughts, apparent form of which is their stubborn and brazen, which prevents them from hearing any correct advice.

Allah Almighty says: O Our Messenger {Muhammad – (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him)}! We have caused to hear You Some circumstances of the townships of ancient people. Their Prophets (peace be upon Them) came unto them with open tokens of their Truth but they did not understand their Sayings. The Prophets and Messengers (blessings on Them) tried their best to admonish them but they did unmoved. They had power of hearing and understanding. They were neither mad nor deaf, but their stubborn drowned their fleet. Allah Almighty can print the stamp of stubborn and perverseness upon the hearts of disbelievers. And they are deprived of guidance.

Commentary

Makarun – we have discussed about this word in Surah ‘Aali-‘Imraan. To devise a plan for breaking the stratagems of the opponents and preparing to seize the enemy unawares, is called Makarun (a Scheme).

It is commanded that those people, who disobey the commands of Allah Almighty, forget that while He knows everything thoroughly and He is Able to do everything, then there is no any cause to sit a side being fearless from His grip.

How can anyone be fearless from it that if any tribulations come at night suddenly when sleeping at night or the people are engaged in sports and games or worldly business during the daylight and then forthwith, any calamity seize them?

Those people who become fearless due to carelessness and negligence, they are in utter confusion. How can it so that command of such an Omnipotent and Aware of everything Master and God is disobeyed while everything is under His control. Surely He would have any such scheme to punish those people who commit against His orders.

Circumstances of all those nations have been reviewed in this Section, which were mentioned earlier. The Prophets (blessings on Them) were sent unto them, disasters were cast on them for paying their attention unto Allah Almighty so that they abstain from disobedience due to intimidation.

They were given blessings so that haply they come back unto the Straight Path, by means of those favors, be engaged in worship and thankful to Allah Almighty; considering Him their Lord and Merciful God. But neither they learnt any lesson from troubles and nor had any regard for the blessings.

When Prophets of God Almighty (blessings on Them) drew their attention to this side that it entire has been happening by the command of Allah Almighty, so your condition will become stable in ease and comfort, if you believed in Allah Almighty. You will be saved from deadly miseries.

After hearing the above words, they said: It is a rule of the world. Our ancestors suffered troubles sometimes and enjoyed sometimes their life in rest. Similarly we are going through these circumstances. Are we children that sometimes you frighten us and sometimes deceive and show us the green gardens for the purpose that we should believe in God?

At last, those ignorant people were drowned with their foolishness. The existing human beings should learn a lesson from this description and they must accept the advice of Prophets and Messengers (blessings on Them) wholeheartedly.
