Quran Chapter 8 – 13 & 14 (Pt-9, Stg-2) (L-1091) - درس قرآن

Punishment for the rebels

Chapter ‘Anfaal (Spoils of War) – Surah – 8)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

13.  That is because they opposed Allah and His Messenger. And whoso opposeth Allah and His Messenger, (for him) lo! Allah is Severe in punishment.

14.  That (is the reward), so taste it, and (know) that for disbelievers is the torment of the Fire.
13.  Zaalika  bi-‘annahum  shaaaq-qUllaaha  wa  RasuulaH.  Wa  many-yushaaq-QIllaaha  wa RasuulaHuu  fa-‘innAllaaha  shadiidul-‘iqaab.

14.  Zaalikum  fazuu-quuhu  wa  ‘anna  lil-kaafiriina  ‘azaaban-Naar.

Commentary

Shaaaq-quu – (who opposed), it is a past tense and origin of it is yushaaqiqu, which exists in the above quoted verse. The words mushaaqatah and shaqaaq have been derived also from the word shaq, which has been passed in the last Section of the first Part. The meanings of shaq and shaqaaq are “to separate and separation”, to break, to divide and to tear are used also as its meanings. Mushaaqatah means “to strive for being separate from one another”. It aims that “whoso will make up his mind to fight with Allah Almighty; He will cause him to suffer from severe misfortune, in the world as well as in the Hereafter.

It was promised in the previous verse that “Allah Almighty commanded the Angels (peace be upon Them) that they should encourage the Believers. Then He commanded: Smite the necks of infidels and smite of them each finger. In this verse, the reason of smiting so severely has been described.

It is commanded that those people have opposed Allah Almighty and His Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him). Therefore, O Believers! Allah Almighty has made you conquerors over them. It is known about this incident from the Sayings (Ahaadith) of God’s Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him), that seldom any hit by any Muslim over any idolater would have gone blank. Many assailants have told: As soon as we raised our hands to strike (not yet hit), the infidel himself or his head fell on the ground (before the stroke). As though, indicating towards the enemy for the purpose of striking was sufficient for the opposite instead of striking to kill him. Its main reason was “Fear of the Believers including the help of the Angels”.

Next, the disbelievers are being addressed: This is misfortune, disgrace and calamity for you in the world; which has been sent down on you due to your evil deeds, so taste it and weep on your lot. After it, when the obedient and believers will be rewarded and sent to the Garden, then God Almighty will command for you: Pull and cast them into the Fire of Hell, which We have prepared for the disbelievers. (God forbid).

Help by Angels - Quran Chapter 8 – 12 (Pt-9, Stg-2) (L-1090) - درس قرآن

Help by Angels

Chapter ‘Anfaal (Spoils of War) – Surah – 8)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

12.  When thy Lord inspired the angels, (saying:) I am with you; so make those who believe stand firm. I will throw fear into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Then smite the necks and smite of them each finger.
12.  ‘Iz  yuuhii  Rabbuka  ‘ilal-malaaa-‘ikati  ‘annii  ma-‘akum  fasabbi-tullaziina  ‘aamanuu  Sa-‘ulqii  fii  quluu-billaziina  kafarur-ru’-ba  fazribuu  fawqal-‘a’-naaqi  wazribuu  minhum  kulla  banaan.

Commentary

Yuuhii – (inspired), origin of this word is ‘iihaaa’, which has been derived from wahii. Literal meanings of wahii are “putting in mind, to inspire, to point out. That; which is inspired unto a Messenger (peace be upon Him); is of a particular form. Any of the above meanings can be used in other forms, but here it aims “inspiration, revelation”.

‘A’-naaqi – (the necks), this word is plural of ‘anaq, which means “a neck”.Fawqal-‘a’-naaqi – (upper portion (above the) necks that is to say; the head and the face, including the skull, middle part of eye and ear, nose, chin and the jaw etc.

Banaan – the space interval between finger joints or articulations of the body, here it aims “the both”. This word covers all joints of the body i.e. the joints of fingers, forearms and knees etc. beating on fawqal-‘a’-naaq and banaan is very effectual stroke and it kills immediately.

Allah Almighty addressed His Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) in this verse but guided to the Muslims that they should fight with infidels bravely and meet them boldly. And a particular method of fighting has been taught here. This verse has two parts:

In the first part, it is commanded that your Lord has made a particular device for this Battle. By sending the Angels; He has instructed them that their duty is to strengthen the hearts of the Muslims. Your Lord has commanded the Angels that He was with them. They should encourage the Muslims, make them stand firm, and remove those temptations which the Devil has been putting in their hearts for producing fear and terror into their hearts, and give them glad tidings of help and victory.

In the second part, God Almighty commands the Muslims: I am going to throw your fear into the hearts of disbeliever. You should smite those parts of their bodies fearless; due to which; either they die at once or their bodies become unable to move.

Commentary

It was discussed in the previous verse that the help of Angels (peace be upon Them) was a good and great tidings for the Muslims. It was cause of satisfaction of their hearts. It is that particular form of help which has been specified only for the Believers. However, help of every kind is from Allah Almighty because He has entire Powers and Perfect Awareness regarding the forms and occasions of the help.

Those forms of help have been described in this verse; with which; the Muslims were helped in the Battle of Badr. In fact, this battle was an occasion of very severe trial of them. They were three hundred and thirteen only whereas the enemies were nearly nine hundred and fifty in numbers. They were unarmed, while the infidels were armed heavily. They came out for the purpose that they would sack the caravan of the merchants, but the battle fell on their heads suddenly. The Army of enemy had possessed best place for fighting beforehand. Battle field was sandy and the feet had been penetrating into it. They were confused due to clouds of dust, scarcity of water for drinking as well as for washing and taking necessary bath. Certainly, their hearts were very upset due to the reasons mentioned above and they had been looking certain defeat ahead.

Allah Almighty removed their entire difficulties. It rained heavily. The sand congealed and then there was water in sufficient quantity for their drinking, ablution and taking bath. They became able to move easily in the battle field due to congealment of the sand. When they were contented, Allah Almighty made the slumber fall upon them and then; their hearts were fresh and satisfied. Fear and confusion scampered off and in addition, the Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) caused them to hear the good tidings regarding the help of Angels (peace be upon Them). Then every Believer was gay and jolly. Those matters have been reminded in this verse.

It is commanded: Remember that time; when Allah Almighty made the slumber fall upon you and produced satisfaction in your hearts. He sent down water from the sky so that you might be purified by making ablution, taking bath and quenching your thirst with water, remaining away from the devilish temptations and strengthening your hearts by congealing the sand so that you might stand firmly.

Commentary

We recited the same verse in Surah ‘Aali ’Imraan. There too; it was mentioned that the Muslims should not worry for shortage of manpower and lack of necessaries. Allah Almighty can help the weak by thousand ways. In this verse, the same subject exists that when they had to fight against the people who were threefold more than their strength and felt utmost deficiency of war equipment, then the Muslims were very upset. They began to burst into tears before their Lord, Allah Almighty (Great is His Glory) for their condition of humility and helplessness.

God Almighty commanded: You should not worry for deficiency of your manpower strength. There is no deficiency of Angels with Me. I will send down a thousand Angels (in Surah ‘Aali ’Imraan this strength is three thousand and five thousand), in short; as much number of Angels will be sent for help as you required. At both places, the same words have been used that “You will be helped with Angels (when You are confused)”. And at the both places the verse under reference comes after that.

It is commanded in this verse that the help of the Angels is good and great tidings and your hearts will be strengthened with it. There are countless forms of the help of Allah Almighty, however, He has prescribed a rule that; whose Faith will be perfect; certainly they will surmount over those, whose Faith is ambiguous. Material and natural help is provided to everyone according to own effort in the world in accord with principles determined by Allah Almighty. But victory and success do neither depend on apparent goods and equipment; nor on number of fighters. Moreover, it depends on satisfaction and strength of the hearts, which can be attained by Trust and Belief in God Almighty only. Allah Almighty is Overcoming on the entire and His every work is based on Wisdom.

8.  That He might cause the Truth to triumph and bring vanity to naught, however much the guilty oppose.

9.  When ye sought help of your Lord and He answered you (saying): I will help you with a thousand of the angels, rank on rank.
8.  Li-yuhiqqal-Haqqa  wa  yubtilal-Baatila  wa  law  karihal-mujrimuun.

9.  ‘Iz  tasta-giisuuna  Rabbakum  fasta-jaaba  lakum  ‘annii  mumiddukum-  bi-  ‘alfim-minal-  malaaa-‘ikati  murdifiin.

Commentary

Yuhiqqu – (to cause to triumph), this word is from ‘ahqaaq, which has been derived from haqq. Haqq means the Truth. It aims that; that should be proved which is true.

Yubtilu – (to naught, to prove that it is vanity, falsehood), this is from ‘abtaal, which has come out from batala. Batala means “a lie, vanity, falseness”.

Tasta-giisuuna – (you sought help), it is from ‘ista-gaasah, which has been derived from gaws. Gaws means help, and ‘istagaasah means “to seek help”. It aims “by showing your helplessness, you asked your Lord for help”.

‘Asta-jaaba – {(He) answered, heard and accepted your complaint, sanctioned your application}. It means “answer” and is past tense from the word ‘asta-jaabatun which means to answer, to sanction one’s application. The word ‘ajaabatun comes also, nearly for the same purpose.

Murdifiin (rank on rank, who would be coming constantly), it is the subject which is plural of murdifun, has been derived from ‘irdaafun. ‘Irdaafun means “to follow”. Radaf and radiif means “the individual who has been sitting behind someone or following”.

It is commanded that Allah Almighty desired that the caravan of merchants should be saved and go forth from your strike, and you should meet the armed fighters of Makkah, so that He show you the Wonder of His Divine Power, and handful, unarmed Muslims kill and arrest more than them threefold armed people, so that the Truth is disclosed in the world. Although, how much displeasure is exposed by the infidels and the evil livers, and they are unpleasant due to defeat, and you considered yourselves unable to fight against them. You were worrying due to shortage of Muslims’ manpower and war equipment. You begged from Allah Almighty for help and He accepted your request and said: I will send a thousand Angels (peace be upon Them) for your help; who will be coming continuously one after one. The Angels (peace be upon Them) cannot be seen by the human beings but their influence is felt by the hearts immediately and perfect satisfaction is produced.

If someone feels satisfaction and his confusion is gone after supplication during any occasion of difficulty, then he should consider that the Angels (peace be upon Them) have been helping him.

7.  And when Allah promised you one of the two bands (of the enemy) that it should be yours, and ye longed that other than the armed one might be yours; and Allah willed that He should cause the Truth to triumph by His Words, and cut the root of the disbelievers.
7.  Wa  ‘iz  ya-‘iduku-mUllaahu  ‘ihdat-taaa-‘ifatayni  ‘annahaa  lakum  wa  ta-wadduuna  ‘anna  gayra  zaatish-shawkati  takuunu  lakum  wa  yurii-dUllaahu  ‘any-yu-hiqqal-Haqqa  bi-Kalimaati-Hii  wa  yaqta-‘a  daabiral-kaafiriin.

Commentary

Gayra  zaatish-shawkati  - (that, in which there is no thorn or other than the armed one), actual meaning of shawkatun is a thorn, after that it became power and dignity. It aims “the party, which is not for fighting but has wealth, which can be obtained without trouble”.

A period of more than one year had passed when the Muslims had reached in Madinah. And the Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) had settled them comfortably altogether and mutually. But there was a fear every time from the people of Makkah, and it was sure that they would never miss any chance of dissension and mischief. Therefore, the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) used to send some parties in the vicinity of Madinah for knowing about the current news and emphasized the monitoring of mobility of the infidels of Makkah.

Ultimately, one day, the news reached that a body of traders was returning from Syria with wealth and goods in abundance and they had to pass by the nearby way of Madinah. The chieftain of the caravan was Abu Sufyan. He caused to run a female camel rider to Makkah that they should run for the safety of the caravan, because he felt danger of attack by the Muslims.

When the people of Makkah heard, their all respectable people prepared for fighting, took brave men with them and came out. On the other side, Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) took His Companions (may Allah be pleased with Them) with Him and came out of Madinah.

The Muslims thought that they would see the caravan of the merchants and they would take possession on the wealth of enemies without any trouble. But it happened that Abu Sufyan went forth by another way saving his caravan from Madinah, and the Army, which came from Makkah to save them, the Muslims met them face to face at the place of Badr.

It has been described in this verse: You wished to defeat the enemy financially without fighting but Allah Almighty, The Knower of Unseen decided that you should fight with the equipped Army and the infidels should be defeated and the Truth should be made manifest by the Command of God Almighty; and the false should be abolished. The disbelievers were defeated in such a way that their root was cut.
