Commentary

Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) was assured that it is impossible to see God Almighty in this world with these eyes because no hardest thing of the world can endure the manifestation of Allah Almighty without any curtain, then what to speak of the eye?

Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) is being addressed in this verse that His work is of very high dignity and it is the proof of this preference that Allah Almighty has elevated his status. Therefore, He (peace be upon Him) should be thankful to Allah Almighty and perform His duty with great emphasis.

Dependence of the mankind’s magnificence in the world is on the nature of that work; for which; God Almighty has appointed him. Vision of Divine is not the matter of this world but of the Futurity (after this life).

It is commanded that Allah Almighty said to Moses (peace be upon Him): O Moses! You should be happy that I have selected you to deliver My Messages unto the human beings and that I talked with you personally and directly. So you should hold that; which I have given to you by My Grace and be thankful to Me for it.

After that, some tablets were given to Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him), upon which, the Commands and Guidance – how to act upon Them; were written (it aims Torah). So it is commanded: And We wrote for him {Moses (peace be upon Him)}, upon the tablets, the lesson to be drawn from all things and the explanation of all things (giving advice and lectures, persuading – how to avoid the matters of ignorance, difference between lawful and unlawful in detail, the laws regarding punishment for sinners and evildoers, how to worship and entire matters about the religion were mentioned upon those tablets), (these tablets were handed over to Moses and commanded): Act (your best with force) upon these Commands and say to your nation i.e. the Children of Israel from Me side that they should take better things from these Commands and follow them. That is to say; they should choose; not only the leaves and permissions; but those Commands also; acting upon which, there is a promise of more rewards.

The religion remains safe till that time until its better matters are preserved with effort. Then it is commanded by Allah Almighty: I shall show you the abode of those evil-doers who gripped up their loins to disobey My Commands.

Chapter ‘Al-‘A’raaf (The Heights) – Surah – 7)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

143b.  And when his Lord revealed (His) glory to the mountain He sent it crashing down; and Moses fell down senseless. Then when he woke he said: Glory unto Thee! I turn unto Thee repentant, and I am the first of (true) believers.
143b.  Falammaa  tajallaa  Rabbuhuu  lil-Jabali  ja-‘alahuu  dakkanw-wa  kharra  Muusaa  sa-‘iqaa.  Falammaaa  ‘afaaqa  qaala  SubhaanaKa  tubtu  ‘ilayKa  wa  ‘anaa  ‘awwalul-Mu’-miniin.

Commentary

Tajallaa – (was revealed, appeared), it is a past tense and the origin of this word is tajallii, which has been derived from Jalwah. Jalwah means “Clear, luster, appearance”. Tajallii means “glory, brightness, splendor, to become public or manifest, to be revealed, to appear”.

Sa-‘iqaa – (senseless), it is an adjective, which has been derived from sa-‘aqun. Sa-‘aqun means “senselessness, stupefaction, sub-consciousness”. Sa-‘iqun means that individual; who has lost his conscious.

Having keen interest to see Allah Almighty, Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) requested to Him: Show me Thy Self with my existing eyes. God Almighty replied: It is not possible that any human eye may see to Me. Not only the eye of human body, even any material thing of the world cannot afford My Splendor. Concerning to it, for your satisfaction, I say to you to look unto the mountain. I shall put a little reflection of the Light on it, if it endured, then you will be able to see Me.

It is commanded that for assuring Moses (peace be upon Him) that none can see Allah Almighty openly in the world, He (God Almighty) put a little splendor on the mountain. That part of the mountain; upon which, a little Brightness was sent, it crashed down to the ground level as dust particles. Moses (peace be upon Him) could not bear this scene and fell down senseless.

After some time, when Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) woke, He accepted: Truly O Lord! You are not like to any creature. Therefore, these eyes cannot see Thee. Thou art pure from those things, to which these eyes perceive. I am present in Thy Court being abashed on my application and I am the first individual; who has attained fully this faith practically that really, it is not possible to see Thee in this world. It needs such power and vision, which may see the colorless and unconditional reality. Thou art pure from the color and physical conditions. Therefore these outward eyes are entirely helpless here. Conducts of the glory of Allah Almighty are endless.

Body of the things depends somehow on its luster but its innate brightness is hidden in any veil. Outside of the veil, its signs manifest. Some of those signs can be seen also by the human eye.

Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) desired to view the innate Brightness unveiled, otherwise; first of all, when He (peace be upon Him) was appointed as a Prophet, He had seen the glory in the veil of “the Fire on a tree”. The experience of that time assured Him (peace be upon Him) fully that the veil is incumbent for the innate splendor in the world, so He (peace be upon Him) repented being ashamed due to His own boldness.

Commentary

It is commanded that Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) left to live in solitude on mountain Sinai for the term fixed by Allah Almighty after preparation. When He (peace be upon Him) reached there and turned His attention unto Allah Almighty by removing from all sides, and Allah, the Most High spoke to Him and from this conversation, He found a strange pleasure and cheerfulness, a desire of seeing Allah Almighty was born in His heart. He (peace be upon Him) thought: How much rejoice and awesomeness would be in His (God’s) Presence, Whose Word is so much pleasant? Due to excessive fondness; He (peace be upon Him) could not think that a physical eye can see just the colors and patterns of a body. But there is no form of seeing Him (God) with this eye Who is absolutely pure and devoid of body and corporeal.

However, fondness of viewing prevailed so much that unhesitatingly, He (peace be upon Him) requested: O my Lord! Show me Thy Self in any form, that I may see Thou with these bodily eyes of mine. It was commanded: Until the human being is living in this world, he is bound by the constitution of here. This is the inexorable law that physical eye cannot see any unconditional thing.

However, it can be so, that any such scene should be produced before you, with which, helplessness of the matter should manifest upon you that the hardest thing of the world, even any most solid thing cannot bear the Splendor of God Almighty, to Whom you desire to see. The human eye is the weakest thing in the material sense. How will it bear That Light (of Allah Almighty)?

You should gaze upon the mountain, which is in front of you. We are going to put Our a little Brightness on it. If it endured and stood still in its place, then you will also be able to see Us. Otherwise, you should understand that in this world, seeing Allah Almighty is not possible.

The eyes, which have been given to the mankind in this world, with them, he cannot see many things in their original form. For example; the pleasure is a hidden thing, which cannot be seen by these eyes. But one can see its signs. Design of the human face is changed. Smile on the lips, a special kind of movement of the limbs, a new glow in the eyes, frolic and jumping, laughing and a particular kind of laughter, observing these gestures collectively, the sense of one decides that he gains happiness and these are its indications. In the same way, a mankind cannot see Allah Almighty, but by observing His Revelations and Tokens, can know Him easily and set up His conception in own heart.

142.  And when We did appoint for Moses thirty nights (of solitude), and added to them ten, and he completed the whole time appointed by his Lord of forty nights; and Moses said unto his brother, Aaron: Take my place among the people; do right, and follow not the way of mischief-makers.
142.  Wa  waa-‘adNaa  Muusaa  salaa-siina  lay-latanw-wa  ‘atmam-Naahaa  bi-‘ashrin-  fa-tamma  miiqaatu  Rabbihii  ‘arba-‘iina  laylah.  Wa  qaala  Muusaa  li-‘akhiihi  Haaruu-nakh-lufnii  fii  qawmii  wa  ‘aslih  wa  laa  tatta-bi’  sabii-lal-mufsidiin.

Commentary

Miiqaatu – it is a noun which has been made from the word waqt as the word wazan is at the weight of miizaanMiiqaatu means “an appointed time”, which is sufficient to complete any particular work.

It is commanded that We (Allah Almighty) appointed a duration of thirty nights for Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) that He should go over the Mountain Sinai (which is famous for the conversing of Moses and Allah), and engage in worship and supplication, keep a fast and pass His entire time in spiritual knowledge and thinking about Allah Almighty. When thirty nights were over, then ten more nights were increased and a period of forty days’ lent was completed in the solitude of worship.

When Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) got ready to obey the Command of Allah Almighty and was going to leave for Mountain Sinai, He said to His Brother Aaron (peace be upon Them): You will be watching the Children of Israel in place of Me. Keep them checking so that perchance they are not entangled in crazy and destructive matters. Try to better them every time because sometimes desire of those absurd traditions rises into their hearts, willing or unwilling, which they used to observe in Egypt for a long time and upon which, Pharaoh and his folk used to compel them to run. There are many people into them; who incline immediately towards the Devilish works and they take special interest in spreading temptation and corruption. You should never let their tricks and opportunities succeed, lest they overcome and our entire diligence goes waste. And perform on the contrary; whatever they say; otherwise they will leave no stone unturned to destroy them all.

Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) was aware that if the mischief-makers perceived that there was none to prevent them, they will be absolute free. Then, whatever they do not commit; is less. Such people should be prevented from wicked deeds; sometimes with anger and sometime with consolation. The people of good nature should be made own companions and helpers in such works, so that, those, who like destructive activities, live under pressure and may not adopt their inhumanity practice. It is the way to organize a nation that the good people should remain overcome and those who uproar and commit evils, should remain in fear and under their control.

140.  He said: Shall I seek for you a god other than Allah when He hath favoured you above (all) creatures?

141.  And (remember) when We did deliver you from Pharaoh’s folk who were afflicting you with dreadful torment, slaughtering your sons and sparing your women. And that was a tremendous trial from your Lord.

Commentary

Yasuu-muunakum – {they (were afflicting you)}, this word has been derived from suum. Suum means “to vex, to trouble, to torment, to afflict”.

Yastah-yuuna - {they (were sparing, let them living)}, origin of this word is ‘astah-yaaa’, which has been made from hayaat. Hayaat means “life”. ‘Astah-yaaa’ means “to let (someone) survive”.

Balaaa-‘un – actual meanings of this word are trial, test, examination. Sometimes it comes by means of any calamity/disaster, and sometime by means of favor. Therefore, it can be used in both meanings. Here it aims favor.

It was described in the previous verse that the Children of Israel asked for permission from Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) to worship by keeping the idols in front. He (peace be upon Him) commanded that this way is dangerous. You don’t know about its sequel. It makes a man oblivious from actual God at the end. Its benefit is fictitious only, you don’t know, whether it will be gainful or otherwise, that is to say; to focus the attention at a particular point. But its harm and loss is sure i.e. falling into the belief in a plurality of God (polytheism).

It is commanded that Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) said: It is biggest misfortune of the human being if he forgets Allah Almighty. Can it be suitable to adopt any such matter, which appears in the beginning a harmless but consequence of which is that, at the end, the people begin to consider the idols as God and everything and are involved in the polytheism and infidelity. I do not accept your request that I create another god for you except Allah Almighty, Who is Creator, Lord and Worshipped of all of the mankind and other entire creatures? Beholding such strongest Signs of God Almighty, that He did deliver you from Pharaoh’s nation and raised your dignity more than the entire world at that time (after deliverance from the people of Pharaoh). It is biggest tyranny if you arrange to forget Him.

In the next verse, the Jews are being reminded again about the biggest favor of God Almighty on their ancestors. They would have been removed from the earth as horns from the donkey’s head; if God Almighty had not favored the Children of Israel, because the people of Pharaoh used to slaughter their sons and spare their women. It was a tremendous trial from the Lord of the Worlds (God Almighty).

138.  And We brought the Children of Israel across the sea, and they came unto a people who were given up to idols which they had. They said: O Moses! Make for us a god even as they have gods. He said: Lo! ye are a folk who know not.

139.  ‘Inna  haaa-‘ulaaa-‘i  mutab-barum-maa  hum  fiihi  wa  baa-tilum-maa  kaanuu ya’-maluun.

Commentary

Ya’-kufuuna – (have been restrained), this word has been derived from ‘akafa, which means “to sit a side and giving full attention towards one point”. The word ‘A’-takaaf has been made also from it, which means “Restraining, curbing one’s passion from religious motives continuing in the Mosque (particularly at Makkah), sitting by oneself in a mosque and think of God (Allah) Almighty”.

‘Asnaa-min – (idols), it is plural of sanam. Any image or thought, which is displayed in a form of any statue or idol; is called Sanam. The idol, to which these people used to worship, was of a cow, which is a collection of useful thing for the mankind. In the beginning, the people used to keep its statue in front to show the idea of “Lord”. Then they forgot “Lord” and began to worship it.

‘Al-bahru – (Sea or river), the aim from this word ‘Al-bahru is, that branch of “The Red Sea” which is in the middle of Egypt and Sinai Peninsula. When the Children of Israel flew away from Egypt under the command of Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him), they reached the coast across the Sea with the Grace of God Almighty. They saw there some people, who were going to worship an idol, which was lying before them. They also thought: What is problem in it if, we worship God and retain any statue in front of us to keep the thinking at one point? Therefore, they came unto Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) and said: We should also be permitted to make the countenances, statues and idols as they have made, so that, we should worship keeping them in front.

Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) replied them: You don’t know that what harm does exist in it. Listen! That, which they have been doing, is baseless absurdity and it shall be finished one day, because there is a lot of loss and harm in it, without any benefit. The Children of Israel had been dwelling in Egypt for a long time between the idol worshipers. When they saw the people here worshiping idols, the same passion was born into them again. Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) said to them: It is a net of polytheism. It is our duty to remove it.

Commentary

Kalimatu – (the Word, utterance, conversation), usually it is written as Kalimah. In the Holy Qur’an, it is written with long ت (T) at this place. Every meaningful word, which comes out from the mouth, is called kalimah. In this verse, the aim from this word is, that promise/covenant, which was made by Allah Almighty through the tongue of Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) that: The Children of Israel will be appointed as heirs and successors of the land and all things relating to Pharaoh and his folk after annihilating them.

‘Al-husnaa – (of the goodness), this word is pronoun of comparison toward excellence, and it is feminine of ‘Ahsan. Both words have been derived from the word hasnun, which means “goodness, beauty, and fair”. ‘Ahsan means “amusing, beautiful, heart-alluring”. As the word Kalimah is feminine, therefore, instead of the word ‘ahsan, its adjective ‘al-husnaa has come here.

DammarNaa – (We annihilated). It is past tense, and its origin is tadmiir, which has been derived from damaar. It means annihilation and ruin. Tadmiir means “to annihilate and ruin”.

It has been commanded by God Almighty in this verse: We drowned Pharaoh along with his people and made the Children of Israel heirs of fertile land of the Egypt and the Syria. Kingdom of their kings spread in the entire world slowly and gradually, and so, that covenant of kindness, which Allah Almighty made with the Children of Israel, was fulfilled. As they suffered the tyrannies of Pharaoh and his people for a long time, therefore, it was a reward of their patience. They endured those troubles silently, which Pharaoh cast over them. We annihilated that trick and imposture; which was played by Pharaoh and his nation, being united mutually, by flaunting their pride and arrogance, to tease the poor and feeble people of Israel. Leaving their palaces, which were high and wide enough, they sat into the depths of the sea, whereas the Children of Israel began to rise in the world.

It has been described very clearly in this verse that well-being and prosper of the human being depends on the accuracy of his morals and habits. Those people, who consider that power and wealth makes a man successful, whether his morals and habits are worse, the strongest opponents can be made soft with the riches and most severe adversary can be crushed with the power. May it be so; that this deception is useful for some days and the powerful people consider that now we have conquered the entire world completely. None can overawe to us now. But it is a false notion which has ruined and destroyed many people. Causes of their ruin and destruction are produced automatically about which they can never think. Suddenly, they lay prostrated on their back. And their opponents, whom they had kept pressed and who were considered weak, come up due to their patience and endurance.
