Quran Chapter 9 – Intro (Pt-10, Stg-2) (L-1139) - درس قرآن

Introduction of Chapter Nine

Chapter Tawbah (Repentance) – Surah – 9)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

BisMillaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim is not written before this Surah. Wrathful commandments have been mentioned in it concerning the disbelievers. According to setting, it is ninth Chapter of Holy Qur’an, whereas its number of Revelation is one hundred thirteenth. It was revealed in Madinah during ninth Hijrah. Before its revelation, Treaty of Hudaibiyah was made during sixth AH.

Reason of its revelation was that, when treaty was made with Qureish, then the tribe of Banu Khuzaa-‘ah made an agreement with the Muslims, and the tribe of Banu Bakr became ally of Qureish. After two years, Banu Bakr attacked on Banu Khuzaa-‘ah and they did not care that a treaty between their allies (Qureish) and Muslims had been made at hudaibiyah, and one of the terms of treaty was: Neither Qureish and Muslims will attack over each other and nor they will help the assailants.

The Qureish of Makkah helped the tribe of Banu Bakr with weapons etc. and it was obvious disobedience of the treaty of Hudaibiyah. Then it became necessary for the Muslims to help the tribe of Banu Khuzaa-‘ah in accordance with the agreement. Therefore, the Messenger of God Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) attacked on Makkah during eighth AH and conquered it very easily.

At the time of conquest of Makkah, the Muslims had different relationships with different tribes of Arab. Some of them were those; with whom the agreement was for a fixed duration. Some were those who made treaty without fixation of time. Many were such tribes, with which; there was no treaty or agreement. It was meant that by seizing Makkah, the entire Arabian Peninsula had been captured.

It was decided in the Knowledge of God Almighty that the entire Arabian Peninsula would be a strong Fort of Islam, where no other person would be able to interfere except Muslims, and by spreading the brotherhood of Makkah, it shall make the Arab one unity. Following incidents took place constantly to meet this goal.

Peace treaty was held during sixth AH. In eighth AH, the people of Qureish broke it by opposing the same term, and during the same year, the Muslims attacked on Makkah suddenly and conquered it. During ninth AH, the subject Surah was revealed, in which it was decided that the Muslims would be sovereigns directly of the Peninsula of Arab without partnership of any other.

When this Chapter was revealed, a Caravan of Muslims had moved to Makkah for performing Pilgrimage under supervision and leadership of Abu Bakr Siddique (May God be pleased with Him). As soon as this Surah was revealed, an ambassador, that is to say; Ali (May God be pleased with Him) was sent unto Abu Bakr Siddique (May God be pleased with Him) and was instructed that at the time of Hajj, He (May God be pleased with Him) should proclaim in the field of Arafaat or Minaa: All those treaties and agreements have been broken, which were made with idolaters and disbelievers. The person, who does not want to accept Islam, should arrange for himself, otherwise will be put to death. This announcement was read and caused to hear by Ali (May God be pleased with Him).

Different verses of this Chapter have been revealed for different tribes and about different events. Abridged summary of it has been appended below:

1.    In the beginning, the idolaters were warned: There is no further treaty or agreement among you and us. You are given respite for four months. Either you should join Islamic brotherhood by accepting Islam; or get out of the Peninsula of Arab. Infamy of the world and the Day of Resurrection has been written for you. With this proclamation, idol-worshiping was ended from the Arab for ever.

2.    The Christian emperor of Rome was going to be prepared to press the increasing power of the Muslims. There are news about them and instructions about those wars which will be fought against them in future.

3.    The Muslims are being guided to be separate from the hypocrites and remain vigilant from them.

Review of Chapter Eight - (3)

Chapter ‘Anfaal (Spoils of War) – Surah – 8)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

Often it happened; that Messenger of God Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) used to perform a work at His own and by receiving any good opinion from other Muslims, and then the Revelation fixed it as lawful for such condition, but at any other occasion, it was commanded by keeping in view the opportunity; that it should be done according to the perfect Law, as well as; the first Revelation was preserved also, so that; if such first condition of occasion appears again, then it should be done as it was done earlier. From the verses of this Chapter it has been explained.

Therefore, the Muslims left the captives of the Battle of Badr after mutual opinion and receiving money. This behavior was determined lawful for that particular situation in this Surah. But after that; a perfect Law was introduced about it that, now acting according to it and by thinking about it, a permanent procedure comes out for the Muslims for ever, abiding by which, many disputes can be resolved.

Coming down of any new Revelation is quite impossible at this time. However, the old Revelations are safe (God be praised) in the form of Holy Qur’an and fortunately; the decisions of God’s Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) and His True Successors, which They filed during different occasions; exist before us in the form of Ahaadith (Sayings) of the last Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him).

Like this, we possess the religious judgments and decrees (Fataawaa) in heaps, which were issued by the religious Scholars from time to time according to the Principles and which had been derived from the above mentioned sources (in the light of Qur’an and Hadith). The Light of God’s Revelations is conspicuous in all of Them. The Path is the same even now that we should decide our ongoing controversies ourselves thoughtfully and by mutual consultation. And then we should examine our decision in the light of the Books of Ahaadith and Sayings of the religious Directors. If it tallies with Them then we should act upon it.

The only difference is that at first; the Revelation used to confirm or infirm it directly, whereas nowadays, Holy Qur’anHadith and Theology (Fiqah) are its Successors. If the evidence regarding any matter is not found into them, then the way of council and judgment is open, and its principles have been fixed with effect from the centuries. Whichever decision we shall make with sincerity and for God’s sake, that will be practicable, on the condition; that is not against the spirit of Holy Qur’an and Sayings of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him).

At the end of the Chapter, there is a description in respect of Immigrants, inhabitants (Muhajiriin and Ansaar of Madinah) and those Muslims who had not yet immigrated. Moreover, when during 2 AH, this Surah was revealed; maximum relationships could be established on temporary basis. But when Makkah was conquered, then necessity of a permanent Center was felt. For this purpose, which preparation was required, that has been described in the next Chapter.

If we see the narration from this point of view, it appears that this religion is natural, because such person, who is not usurped by external influences, chooses it automatically. Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) went on this Path Himself. The Revelation of Holy Qur’an verified and authenticated it, and saved it in words and composition for ever. Those people who do not consider the Hadith necessary, which describes about the Practice of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) only, they should meditate that Holy Qur’an has not created any religion. It says about those matters as correct; which were in the practice of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him), and produces Rules and Regulations of His organization. Therefore, at first we should save the established Practice of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him), and that is only His (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) Sayings (Hadith). And that can be saved and kept in its original form only through practice by the people of all times regularly. Accordingly, by the Grace of God Almighty, that is safe with both methods. The source of knowing about its correctness is Holy Qur’an. And during every era, it has been renewed and corrected in the light of Holy Qur’an and this practice will be continued. Holy Qur’an does not produce any new thing. It supports and manages the same religion, which is adopted by a perfect mankind Himself.

The people of Makkah believed that Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) was a perfect mankind, but when Holy Qur’an said: Obey and submit that perfect mankind, then it was very troublesome for them. Their vision was not so broad that they would have chosen the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) as their chieftain and obtained the pride of being a Guide of human beings.

Messenger of God Almighty said to them: Let Me preach for this Religion independently, whether you accept it or otherwise. But whosoever desires to accept it, let him do so. They did not agree even to this. At last, it became necessary to separate the both groups – the title of Believer was given to that individual who accepted the invitation of this religion, whereas that person was named “Disbeliever/Infidel” who did not accept. So, in this manner, two big groups came into existence for ever.

Then Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) immigrated to Madinah, and those Muslims who got this opportunity they reached there also with Him. In the second year of immigration, the Battle of Badr was fought; the necessity of compiling the Rules and Regulations regarding war was felt. If the people of Makkah had been straight; then there was no need of it. At that time, this Chapter of Holy Qur’an was revealed. The Battle of Badr was named as Furqaan (the Battle, which distinguished and separated the Truth from the falsehood); and it was told that due to stubbornness of the people of Makkah, the people have been divided today in two main communities i.e. Believers and Disbelievers. Which group is before you, that is united upon enmity with you and they think that they are organized. Opposite to them, you should be organized too. If they rejected the freedom of the religion, then, it is as they established the root of persecution and disturbance in the world. You should organize yourselves for disjoining the root of mischief, confusion and corruption.

Subject method has been described in this Surah in detail. According to this organization, a primary society was established in Madinah and that society began its work with effect from the Battle of Badr. And consequently, they conquered Makkah slowly and gradually.

It is obvious from the method of revealing the Holy Qur’an that Messenger of God Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) and His Companion Muslims (may Allah be pleased with Them) used to organize a way of practice according to the occasion on the foundation of human nature. Then they used to wait for confirmation by the Revelation from God Almighty or Command of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him). After confirmation, they used to begin their work. The confirmation was often according to the opinion of the Chieftain of the Messengers (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him), His sincere and faithful Companions (may Allah be pleased with Them). Or it was corrected by amendment and cancellation.

Lessons from Suratul- ‘Anfaal have been over. Before proceeding forth, we should have to review and think: What does it teach us?

It is the actual aim of Islam that the entire human beings of the world should be gathered in one community and established their fundamental thoughts at one point. The life of Muhammad, Messenger of God Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) in Makkah, His conduct with the people and Chapters of Holy Qur’an; revealed in Makkah (all) support the same thing. In the terms of circumstances, His life in Makkah was not eminent from the life of common people. His employments and engagements for getting the necessities of life were the same as of the people of that period; for example; labor, working, grazing the cattle or trade etc.

However, He (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) behaved the people in such a way which can be of any most noble person of the world. Meeting every individual with open heart, neither deceiving and nor cheating anyone, taking care of the relatives, looking after the poor, widows and orphans, helping those who are in trouble, control over wishes, being a human; regard of self-respect, dignity and honor in all conditions, trying to fix the dignity of mankind by understanding it well, to hate those works which are against the humanity, not to bow humbly before anything of the world; and consider that the human being is superior to all creatures and that: the head can be bowed before Him only Who is most Superior to the human being (The Creator of the entire universe), trust and good-well – these all things had taken place in His (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) nature. And such habits which have been settled down in the heart; are called Khulq (philanthropy, civility and hospitality). Khulq can be good as well as bad also. But His (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) all manners were best. When inspiration of Holy Qur’an began, it supported these good habits too; which had become His (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) Khulq. And the truth is that mutual misunderstanding of the human beings can be removed by adopting these habits. The people of Makkah accepted that He (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) was at the highest stage in the terms of Khulq.

Anyhow, the people of Makkah could not agree upon the teachings of Holy Qur’an, and they sacrificed the benefits of common people upon their a little personal benefit. It is understandable here that human religion is not filled in with force, but it arises from within the mankind. A perfect man runs upon that way naturally which has been fixed for the humankind according to his anatomy. The Messenger of God Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) chose that way Himself from His child-hood, which was in accordance with the human religion.

Therefore, the religion is the same, which Messenger of God Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) produced before the world by means of His habits, sayings and deeds, as though; He (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) had already chosen the way of religion on His own accord before the revelation of Holy Qur’an and hated those things which are against the human religion.

When His (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) religion became matured, manners were manifested clearly and all people gave evidence that He was the best mankind, then revelation of Holy Qur’an was begun, and that Path on which Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) was going; and those manners which He had adopted, Holy Qur’an saved them in words for ever, and the Way of His deeds was clarified and determined. And the seal of certification was affixed on His morals and habits.

It is proved by the verse of Holy Qur’an “’Innaka  la-‘alaa  khuluqin  ‘aziim (You are found on a very brilliant philanthropy). And it is known also from His (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) Saying that someone asked from Aishah (may God be pleased with Her): Describe something about the Khulq of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him). She (may God be pleased with Her) answered: His (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) Khulq is Holy Qur’an. And it is proved from the verse ‘Atii-‘Ullaaha wa ‘atii-‘ur-Rasuula and many other verses of Holy Qur’an like this; that Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) was already firm on the religion and the human philanthropy (Khulq). The Word of God Almighty attested and certified it, and strengthened His Belief (Iman) and commanded: Organize your deeds now from this Scripture. That Path on which You are going, is Straight and True.

Commentary

It has been described in this verse that; those people who entered in Islam afterwards and believed, immigrated, came to Madinah and joined the earlier immigrants, helped them in their works and participated in their efforts and strife, they all are brothers one of another. Their internal and external relations are the same as of yours.

As if, the near relatives of previous immigrants come after accepting Islam and immigration, then they would be heirs of their relatives, and according to the Scripture of Allah Almighty (Holy Qur’an), which portion of kinsmen has been prescribed in the hereditary; the property of the dead person will be divided into them. Due to new brother-hood (among immigrants and inhabitants), they will not be deprived. A heritage will be distributed between the new brother-hood till such time; the actual kinsmen do not reach their relatives in Madinah after immigration. When they arrived at Madinah, then their right is at first priority in the portion of the deceased’s property. The legacy of the dead immigrant will be distributed among them only.

Everything is in the Knowledge of God Almighty, He knows it also that how the heritage should be divided and whose right is antecedent. On the basis of His Knowledge; He determined heirs of one another to the immigrants and the inhabitants (Muhajiriin and Ansaar) due to brotherhood.

After that, when kinsmen of the immigrants reached Madinah after immigration and joined them, then the original law about legacy was regularized. Therefore, the property of the dead person will be distributed in accordance with that law. And then; no one was authorized to decrease or increase any portion of heritage. However, if that individual, who is at the death’s door, does act of kindness with someone else, he is entitled to do so up to one-third portion of his property. More than this portion of his last will; will be corrected and distributed according to the religious law.

‘Ulul-‘arhaami - (kinsmen, relatives), it is plural of zo-rihmRihm means “the womb, matrices, relations by the mother’s side”. Here; the aim from ‘ulul-‘arhaam  is “those entire near relatives whose portion has been prescribed in the property of the person who has died and those who are given remaining property after distributing the portions to rightful heirs”. Those relatives and kinsmen are also called Zawil-‘arhaam. First kind of people is called Zawil-furuuz and the second is ‘Asbah. Actual aim from this verse is “these entire relatives”.

According to the terminology of the Jurisprudence (Fiqah), those relatives have been included in ‘ulul-‘arhaam too; who are not Zawil-furuuz or ‘Asbah. The detail about their portion or right in the heritage has been mentioned in the Books of Fiqah. Instructions about them can be known from there.

Commentary

Islam means subjection and obedience. That person is a Muslim who, whenever is commanded to perform any good work, obeys immediately. Condition of one’s heart is not under discussion. Whosoever became obedient and submissive to the Commands of God Almighty and Sayings of His Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him), became Muslim.

It comes out from this discussion that the individual who lived like Muslims and adopted the manners of own life as of the Muslims, from which; apparently no difference is seemed between the Muslims and that person, we shall also count him/her a Muslim under outward law. And we shall treat him/her as other Muslims.

It is duty of the Muslim society to keep the traditions and customs correct collectively. In all conditions, anyhow; that person will be considered a Muslim who accepts them. If false traditions and customs have been established, then entire community is responsible for it collectively. Only that person cannot be criticized who accepted. It is sufficient for making him/her a Muslim who accepted them.

However, that individual is higher in rank who believed wholeheartedly and admitted sincerely. Some fortunate people get this belief in the beginning sometimes, but maximum people attain such belief sometime more and sometime less gradually, running on outward instructions of Islam, and it can be recognized by means of some tokens and signs, which are mentioned in the Sayings (Ahaadith) of Messenger of God Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him). This Belief, Certainty and Confidence is called Iman.

Some people are so much fortunate that Holy Qur’an has admitted their Belief and Fidelity, and has verified clearly that they are Believers. Besides this, the proof regarding some people exists that they are Believers and Heavenly; according to the Sayings of Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him). Other people are filed in Islam but it is not in our power to say about them that they are certainly Believers. In whom we observe the signs of Belief in accord with the Commands of Allah Almighty and His Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him), we can presume only that they are Believers.

The Muslims, who immigrated from Makkah (Muhaajiriin) and inhabitants of Madinah (Ansaar) are called in this verse that in truth they are Believers, because immigrants sacrificed their lives, kin and everything for the Cause of God Almighty, whereas inhabitants of Madinah took them in and helped them in all respect.

Those people who say that condition of the belief of every individual is the same, neither it increases and nor decreases, aim of them from Iman (Belief) is Islam, relation of which is with outward deeds. Remaining people who are convinced that the Belief increases as well as decreases, aim of them from the Belief is such internal certainty which cannot be known by any other except Allah Almighty.

Commentary

It is commanded that those people who do not believe, become ready immediately to support one of another. If the believers did not help one of another timely, then the land would become amphitheater of confusion and corruption, and great disturbance would spread.

Holy Qur’an began to reveal upon Messenger of God Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) in Makkah and with effect from its first revelation; the foundation of Islam was laid. He (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) lived for thirteen years in Makkah after the beginning of Islam and tried His best to teach the people of Makkah Islam, and caused to hear them the verses of Holy Qur’an, so that after hearing, that individual may convert to Islam and follow Its commands who desire; and change own life according to entirely its revelations.

The people of Makkah did not accept His (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) Saying. Moreover, they began to prevent others with force from embracing Islam. And not only they prevented verbally; but got ready to annoy and molest the Believers. It was against the humanity. Only accepting not; cannot be reason of fighting in Islam. But snatching someone’s freedom and saying: If you understand that Islam is a true religion, even then we shall not let you accept it. This is a natural reason of fight, but even then; during the stay in Makkah, the Muslims were not ordered to fight and they were commanded: Be patient.

Therefore, the Muslims tolerated as far as it was possible. Some people left their native land and went to Abyssinia, but the Infidels of Makkah did not refrain from their persistence. After that, the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) was commanded that they should go to Madinah

Even then, behavior of the people of Makkah remained the same; that if Islam is a true religion; even then we shall not permit any individual to accept it. Lastly, the Muslims were permitted to fight and they were commanded: No doubt they disbelieved, but they are not allowed to prevent others forcibly from their favorite thing. It is root of mischief. It should be removed. Strike with a sword against them. Sheathe it not until the confusion and corruption is over.

Remember! As far as they do not forget perverseness of seizing the freedom of other people, you should kill them wherever you find, plunder and destroy them, because they pursue to finish the foundation of humanity. And they want to cause to acknowledge their superiority forcibly from others by setting free their favorite thing.

You have to remove this stubbornness and establish the freedom of human conscience in the world, without any discussion on it that whether someone is Infidel, Jew, Christian or have any other religion/is without religion. If he/she is satisfied, is empowered, which religion wants, can adopt. However, freedom of speaking the truth should be established in the world. It is duty of every human being to fight against him and keep him under influence who desires to finish the freedom. So, you should fight against him whether he says himself a Muslim. A Muslim can never be a terrorist and a terrorist can never be a Muslim.

Those instructions which have been described here about relations among the disbelievers and the believers, from them; it aims those disbelievers who desire to prevent others with force from their favorite thing. However, those people who are not mischievous; but they do not accept Islam, form of relationship with them has been explained at another place, not here.
