Alcohol and gambling - Quran Chapter 5 – 90 (Pt-7, Stg-2) (L-733) -

Quran Chapter 5- 90 (Pt-7, Stg-2) (L-733) -

Alcohol and gambling

Surah MAAA-‘IDAH (The Table Spread) – Chapter – 5)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

90.  O ye who believe! Strong drink and games of chance and idols and diving arrows are only an uncleanness, of Satan’s handiwork, so keep away from them that ye may succeed.
90.  Yaaa-‘ayyu-hallaziina  ‘aamanuuu  ‘innamal-khamru  wal-may-siru  wal-‘ansaabu  wal-‘azlaamu  rijsum-min  ‘amalish-Shaytaani  faj-tanibuuhu  la-‘allakum  tuf-lihuun.

Commentary

‘Ansaabu – (Locality, dwelling place), sacrificing in the name of idols at a place, fixed on their names, this word has been discussed in the beginning of this Chapter (Surah).

‘Azlaamu – (arrows), it is plural of zalama, (like a dice for games). The Arabs used to play games of chance with these arrows. These were used to put near the idols also, upon which different words of command were engraved as “Do, Don’t, Good, Bad” etc. whenever, any work was required to be started, they used to draw an arrow, and act upon that command, which they used to see on that arrow. As though, it was a method of obtaining command of the idol.

It is being commanded in this verse that you should not wander near following four things:-

1.  Strong drink

2.   Games of chance

3.   Idols

4.  Diving arrows

The Arabian people had been addicted of above mentioned four evil habits before the Revelation of Holy Qur’aan. When this Scripture taught the people real method of dwelling in this world, at first; it did not forbid them strictly from strong drink. Even that the commands of the religion were being issued as well as the people continued use of wine. At last the experience taught that the drunkard persons cannot perform their religious duty as it is required. Moreover sometime they do such acts in intoxication condition, which they should not do. When the wise people were sure that the religion and the liquor cannot run collectively, then they desired clear commands regarding the strong drink.

In the beginning, such verses were revealed, in which the people were hindered from strong drink slowly and gradually. Umar (May Allaah be pleased with him), the Companion of the Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) prayed from Allah Almighty for preventing the people from this bad thing absolutely. Then this verse was revealed and four things were fixed in it as disgusting and impure. That is to say; you should run away from them in such a manner as you abstain away from filthy, stench things like urine and stool etc. Because Satan attains His object through these sources and ruins the mankind, and these are the things which are roots of all depravities i.e. Strong drink, Games of chance, worship of Idols and asking them for help, and Diving arrows and knowing command in this manner.

89b.  But for him who findeth not (the wherewithal to do so) then a three days’ fast. This is the expiation of your oaths when ye have sworn. And keep your oaths. Thus Allah expoundeth unto you His Revelations in order that ye may give thanks.
89b.  Famallam  yajid  fa-Siyaamu  salaasati  ‘ayyaam.  Zaalika  kaffaaratu  ‘aymaani-kum  ‘izaa  halaftum.  Wah-fazuuu  ‘ay-maanakum.  Kazaalika  yu-bayyi-nUllaahu  lakum  ‘Aayaa-tihii  la-‘allakum  tash-kuruun.

Commentary

Kaffaaratun – It should also be borne in mind that it is a method of getting liberation from any restriction, which has been prescribed by Allah Almighty.

Halaftum – (you have sworn), it is from halaf, which means ‘an oath’.

The expiation mentioned in the previous lesson is for those people, who have so much wealth that the poor-due becomes incumbent on them to be paid after passing one year with the wealth. Such person is called ‘a possessor of a property/a holder of capital’ (Saahib-e-Nissab). But the person, who is not Saahib-e-Nissab, expiation of oath for him is that he/she should keep a fast for three days. It is commanded that “This is the method of coming out and obtaining deliverance from your oaths if you have sworn (intentionally). Without paying expiation of the oaths, you would have to remain bound of your oaths. So you should think deeply before swearing.

The scholars of the religion have explained that it is not good to abstain from the thing, which is lawful clearly. Its detail is as under:

·         To put oneself in difficulties, to give up good food and good clothing for becoming a worshiper of God Almighty and devotee, is called ‘Priest-hood’, which is not liked in Islam.

·         Someone swears in anger that he would never do any such work which is lawful in accord with Divine precepts of the religion. It is also against Islam.

Its expiation should be paid properly; otherwise, its fulfillment will be compulsory. Then Allah Almighty commands: To facilitate you, Allah Almighty expounds to you His all Revelations. So you should be thankful to Him because He has established a Path for your easiness.

89a.  Allah will not take you to task for that which is unintentional in your oaths, but He will take you to task for the oaths which ye swear in earnest. So the expiation thereof is the feeding of ten of the needy with the average of that wherewith ye feed your own folk, or the clothing of them, or the liberation of a slave.
89a.  Laa  yu-‘aakhizu-kumUllaahu  bil-lagwi  fiii  ‘ay-maanikum  wa  laakiny-yu-‘aakhizukum-  bimaa  ‘aqqattu-mul-‘ay-maan.  Fa-kaffaara-tuhuuu  ‘it-‘aamu  ‘asharati  masaa-kiina  min  ‘aw-sati  maa  tut-‘imuuna  ‘ahliikum  ‘aw  kiswatuhum  ‘aw  tah-riiru  raqabah.

Commentary

Laa  yu-‘aakhizu – {will not take (you) to task}, it has been derived from mu-‘aakhizah. ‘Akhaz means ‘to arrest, to support, seizure’. Mu-‘aakhizah means ‘to call to account, categorical answer, to punish’.

Lagwun – (useless, absurd), the deed, done unintentionally).

‘Ay-maanu - (Oaths), it is plural of yamiin. As per Arabic language it means ‘oath’.

‘Aqqattum – (you swear in earnest), it is from ta’-qiid, which is made from ‘aqdah‘Aqdah is used for ‘a knot’. Ta’-qiid means to tie a knot, to strengthen. So it aims ‘to swear intentionally’.

Kaffaaratun – the deeds, which has to be done as a punishment against any evil, so that the evil may be removed.

It was a form of making good things as unlawful. The people used to swear. If anyone swears that he/she will not do any particular work, then he/she cannot do that. And if someone breaks the oath, then he/she would have to suffer, which is called ‘Expiation of the Oath’.

There is no seizure against any unintentional oath. But it is compulsory to fulfill the oath, which is sworn intentionally. If someone breaks this kind of oath, he/she would have to pay the expiation i.e.

1.    Either he/she would have to feed ten needy persons with the average of that wherewith one feeds one’s own folk, (either causing  them to sit down collectively or pay any poor equal to Sadqa-i-Fitr of ten members of the family),

2.    Or give the clothing to ten indigent people (which should be as sufficient that the needy may cover maximum part of one’s body {a set of shirt and trousers or a colored cloth worn as a dhoti (Lungi) and a sheet}, and or

3.    Set any slave/maid free.

88.  Wa  kuluu  mimmaa  razaqa-kumUllaahu  halaalan-tayyibaa.  Watta-qUllaahallaziii  ‘antum  bihii  Mu’-minuun.

Commentary

Holy Qur’aan desires to show the people Straight Path, so that they may adapt their lives, adopt those things which are useful and give up those habits and things, which are harmful. Thus there are commands as well as prohibitions too in Its verses. ‘Amr means command, order to do good acts, and Nahii means ‘prevention from doing evil deeds’.

At some places, these commands and prohibitions have been described very clearly, and at other places, circumstances and events of other people have been mentioned in such a manner that if we think about them, then we can know, “We should choose their good manners and see off evil deeds like the wicked, by meditating in the consequence of mischief people”.

The Jews have this badness that they are careless from the religion and follow their wishes, whereas the Christians have included many new conceptions in their religion and consider them also part of their religion.

Allah Almighty commands, “Eat of that, which Allah Almighty has bestowed on you as food lawful and good, and keep yourselves bound in the fixed limits of your religion without any increase or decrease”.

The Jews settled unlawful things as lawful for themselves and committed that what they wished. At the other hand, the Christians gave up even the lawful things, and became dervish and monk. You should be saved from this type of inflation and deflation, fear from Allah Almighty and keep your duty to Him, obey His commands in Whom you believe, and do not decide according to your own will.

Conduct of the Jews and the Christians - Quran Chapter 5 – 85 & 86 (Pt-7, Stg-2) (L-729) -

Quran Chapter 5- 85 & 86 (Pt-7, Stg-2) (L-729) -

Conduct of the Jews and the Christians

Surah MAAA-‘IDAH (The Table Spread) – Chapter – 5)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

Holy Qur’aan desires to guide the human beings to go the way, on which there is ease and comfort for everyone in this world and immortal pleasure after death forever. In fact, this way has been established for the human being. Leaving this way, whichever way he will choose, he will repent. And if he is seen apparently escaped in this world, even then he cannot obtain real happiness, and certainly he would have to suffer very severe punishment after death.

Way of Holy Qur’aan about causing to understand the people is so much strange that it is impossible for anyone; if that person thinks on it deeply and does not understand it. But the difficulty is that everyone is not lucky enough to meditate in it with a cold heart. Some such intricacies come between that neither the opportunity of hearing is gotten, nor of reciting and nor of understanding. Moreover, some people begin to oppose and at last they set their heart, “We do not understand that what It says. We shall do that what we wish”.

This is utmost bad luck of the human being. Holy Qur’aan is aware that it will be treated in this way, but even then, it does not give up admonishing due to this reason. Neither it cares nor has any fear of anyone’s stubbornness, animosity or opposition. Whatever it has to clear, it describes in its fixed manner very easily and strongly.

In this Chapter, Secrets of the Infidels, the Disbelievers, the Christians, the Jews and the Hypocrites are being disclosed. And its purpose is that the person, whosoever wishes to be saved from these evils, should escape and adapt the right path. From all of these five types of people, whosoever wants to arrange one’s worldly life and the Day of Resurrection, can dress them by believing and doing good works. Otherwise, he will repent, and a time will come when he will cry, mourn and weep.

The mention of the Jews and the Christians has been discussed more frequently because of the expectation that they would understand the matter, refrain themselves from the depravity and prevent others also. But the Jews were in such condition that in the past times, they turned away after admitting that they were good, and they tormented their Advisers. Even that they used to slay the Prophets (peace be upon them). The Christians were somewhat better than them. They did not practice the hatred behavior against the Muslims which the Jews did. But alas! They also did not believe in Islam and the Messenger of Islam (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him), and they were trapped by their own thoughts. At the end, this lesson teaches that only that person will reap the advantage from Islam who will learn the knowledge of Islam, will not be wisher of the worldly advantages and will not consider himself great than others. That is to say; he would not be proud. The former Christians had these qualities, but the Jews did not. Therefore, their hearts used to incline towards Islam sooner than the Jews. We should think deeply in the previous lessons and then judge ourselves that whether we have those evils or otherwise, which the Jews had. And if (God forbid) we find any evil like them in ourselves then we should purify ourselves from it.

Quran Chapter 5- 85 & 86 (Pt-7, Stg-2) (L-728) -

Reward of Belief

Surah MAAA-‘IDAH (The Table Spread) – Chapter – 5)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

85.  Therefore Allah hath rewarded them for their saying so - Gardens underneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide for ever. And that is the reward of the good.

86.  But those who disbelieved and denied Our Revelations, they are owners of Hell-fire.
85. Fa-‘asaabahu-mUllaahu  bimaa  qaaluu  jannaatin-  tajrii  min-  tahtihal- ‘anhaaru  khaalidiina  fiihaa.  Wa  zaalika jazaaa-‘ul-  Muh-siniin.

86. Wallaziina  kafaruu wa kazzabuu  bi-‘Aayaa-tiNaaa ‘ulaaa-‘ika  ‘As-haabul-Jahiim.

Commentary

‘Asaaba – (rewarded), it is from ‘asaabata, which has been derived from Sawaab, it means ‘the future reward of a virtue’. ‘Asaaba means rewarded.

‘As-haabun – (owners), it is plural of Saahib, which has come out from Suhbat. Suhbat means ‘society, company, and meeting etc’. Saahib means ‘companion, friend, guardian of anything forever’. Along with any other word, its meaning will become ‘owner’. ‘As-haabul-jannah means ‘the owners of the Paradise’, and ‘As-haabul-Jahiim (Naar) - ‘the owners of Hell-fire’.

The people who heard Holy Qur’aan from Prophet Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) and said, “He (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) is a True Messenger, and this (Holy Qur’aan) is a True Scripture”, for them Allah Almighty has suggested a very good reward in retaliation of their saying so, which will be given to them in the Hereafter and since Allah Almighty shall fulfill His promise surely, therefore; it is commanded in this verse, “(Allah) has rewarded them”.

Many of these people were the Christians and less in numbers were the Jews, who believed by listening to the Holy Qur’aan. Due to this reason, it was described in the previous verses, that the Jews are vehement in enmity of the Muslims but the Christians are not too much severe. After that, it has been explained that it does not depend on the Christians or the Jews. Which nation would have these qualities i.e. the knowledge of the religion, disinclination from the worldly gains and having not haughtiness, that nation will begin to love the Muslims very soon; otherwise they will be vehement in enmity of the Muslims.

It is commanded that Allah Almighty will reward them (Believers) green and irrigated Gardens, underneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever. And that is the reward of the righteous.

Then it is commanded: The people; who disbelieve and falsify the Revelations sent by Us, their punishment is that they will be burnt in the Fire of the Hell for ever.

Sign of being softhearted

Surah MAAA-‘IDAH (The Table Spread) – Chapter – 5)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

83.  AND WHEN THEY LISTEN TO that which hath been revealed unto the Messenger, thou seest their eyes overflow with tears because of their recognition of the Truth. They say: Our Lord! We have believed; so inscribe us as among the witnesses.

84.  And why should we not believe in Allah and that which hath come unto us of the Truth; and (why should we not) hope that our Lord will bring us in along with righteous folk?
83.  WA  ‘IZAA  SAMI-‘UU  maaa    ‘unzila  ‘ilar-Rasuuli  taraaa  ‘a’-yunahum  tafiizu  minaddam-‘i  mimmaa  ‘arafuu  minal-Haqq.  Yaquu-luuna  Rabbanaaa  ‘aamannaa  fak-tubnaa  ma-‘ash-shaahidiin.

84.  Wa  maa  lanaa  laa  nu’-minu  BIllaahi  wa  maa  jaaa-‘anaa  minal-Haqqi  ,  wa  natma-‘u  ‘any- yud-khilanaa  Rabbunaa  ma-‘al  qawmis-Saalihiin.

Commentary

Tafiizu – (overflow), here it aims that their eyes are filled with too much tears that they overflow and the tears come out from the eyes.

Shaahidiina – it is plural of Shaahid. The person, who recognizes and believes in the Truth, is called Shaahid.

The difference between the Jews and the Christians of those days has been shown in this verse. The Jews were as much vehement in hostility against the Muslims that when they used to listen to the Holy Qur’aan, made it a jest. On the contrary, the Christians used to shed tears due to effect of the Truth, when they used to hear the verses of Holy Qur’aan.

1.    When some Muslims migrated from Makkah to Ethiopia under compulsion and they caused to hear some verse from Surah Maryam – 19 (Mary) of Holy Qur’aan to Negus, the King of Ethiopia, at that time, the King was so impressed that he began to weep and believed in the Truth of Holy Qur’aan

2.    When some Christians came towards the Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) as representatives of the Christians and listened to the Holy Qur’aan, their hearts had been touched too much that the tears began to shed from their eyes. They believed in its Truth and said, “Our Lord! We have believed; so inscribe us as among the witnesses. And why should we not believe in Allah and that which has come unto us of the Truth; and why should we not hope that our Lord will bring us in along with righteous folk?”
