Likeness of Abraham (peace be upon him)

Surah ‘Al-‘An-‘aam (Cattle) – Chapter – 6)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

74.  (Remember) when Abraham said unto His father Azar: Takest thou idols for gods? Lo! I see thee and thy folk in error manifest.

75.  Thus did We show Abraham the kingdom of the heavens and the earth that He might be of those possessing certainty.
74.  Wa  ‘iz  qaala  ‘Ibraa-hiimu  li-‘abiihi  ‘Aazara  ‘atatta-khizu  ‘asnaa-man  ‘aalihah.  ‘Inniii  ‘araaka  wa  qawmaka  fii  zalaalim-mubiin.

75.  Wa  kazaalika  Nuriii  ‘Ibraa-hiima  Malakuu-tas-samaawaati  wal-‘arzi  wa  li-yakuuna  minal-Muu-qi-niin.

Commentary

‘Aazar – it is the name of Prophet Abraham’s (peace be upon Him) father, who was an idolater and his entire nation was also idolaters.

‘Asnaam – (idols), it is plural of sanam, which means an idol. Sanam is called to a fixed bodily form of any imaginary thing. The idols are also called ‘asnaam (sanam), because those are statues of imaginary gods.

‘Aalihah – it is plural of Allah, literal meaning of ‘ilaah. A thing, which touches the heart deeply, aims “the worshipped”.

Malakuut – the system of whole world is called Malak. Small arrangements to this chief are called Malakuut. Everything in the world has its own governing system and then, this system is subordinate to a big collective governor. The first system is Malakuut, while the other is Malak.

It was commanded in the previous verses that you should ask from the infidels: Who did guide you to worship the idols deserting from Allah Almighty? The person, who has a very common sense, will think certainly that neither the idols can profit anyone and nor hurt.

A narration about Prophet Abraham is being described in this verse that He (peace be upon Him) recognized Allah Almighty by observing the Tokens in the Universe and contrary to Them, found the idols quite useless and worthless. He (peace be upon Him) caused to understand the same to His father also.

It is commanded: Behold! In what manner, Prophet Abraham (peace be upon Him) said the word of wisdom to His father that: Do you worship these self-made and invented statues and idols, which are made of mud and stone etc. and determine them as your gods and worshipped? I know that you and your folk have been entangled in an open error manifest. What stupidity would be more than it that you make a statue with your own hands and then begin to worship it?

Next to above discussion, Allah Almighty says: When Our Prophet Abraham (peace be upon Him) gave up worshipping idols, then did We begin to show Him the secrets and the kingdom of the heavens and the earth and described Him that every that thing, which will be seen by You, has its own system and arrangement, and then these all systems have been running under the control of a Splendid System, which has been established by a Sole-Controller – Allah Almighty.
