Commentary

Punishment for the usurer has been described after forbidding from devouring the usury that his last abode would be Fire of Hell, which is in fact for the disbelievers. It revealed that a usurer would also be produced in the Court of Allah Almighty as a sinner like a disbeliever. Therefore, Muslims should escape from the curse of usury/interest, and pass their lives as those who fear Allah.

Then it has been commanded: Obey Allah Almighty and His Last Messenger, Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him). This obedience becomes cause of mercy upon them. To execute the command of Prophet (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) is just like obeying the Order of Allah Almighty, because it is the Order of Allah Almighty that you would have to obey perfectly the commands of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him). Some Muslims disobeyed the instructions of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) in the Battle of ‘Uhud, which endangered their victory. Therefore, it has been admonished, “Do not fall short and do not commit any error as such in future. If you will obey Allah Almighty and His Messenger, (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) then you will find mercy of Allah Almighty. Doing so, the doors of success and betterment will be opened for you”.

It is being commanded in the third verse of this lesson, “Vie one with another for forgiveness from your Lord. (Labor too hard towards the good deeds and fine manners, for which Allah Almighty and His Messenger, (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) has commanded you. If you will pass your lives in God-fearing and control of the passions then after death from this mortal world, your last abode will be Paradise, which is as wide as are the heavens and the earth, prepared for those who ward off (evil). The human being cannot think vaster than the space of heavens and the earth collectively. Therefore, width of Paradise has been illustrated by a simile of the space of heavens and the earth.

The difference in the result of a usurer and obedient mankind of Allah Almighty has been revealed that one of them is disgraced in the world as well as he will be fuel of hell-fire on the Day of Resurrection. The other person, who is obedient, passes his life with honor and he will be entitled to live in the beautiful gardens of Paradise on the Doomsday.

Restriction on the interest - Quran Chapter 3- 130 (Pt-4, Stg-1) (L-455) - درس قرآن

Quran Chapter 3- 130 (Pt-4, Stg-1) (L-455) - درس قرآن

Restriction on the interest

Surah ‘Aali-‘Im-raan (The Family of ‘Imran) – Chptr – 3)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

130.  O ye who believe! Devour not usury, doubling and quadrupling (the sum lent). And observe your duty to Allah, that ye may be successful.
130.  Yaaa-‘ayyu-hallaziina  ‘aa-manuu  laa  ta’-kulur-Ribaaa  ‘az-‘aafam-muzaa-‘afah.  Wat-taqullaaha  la-‘allakum  tuflihuun.

Commentary

During the recitation about the Battles of Badr and ‘Uhud , now prohibition of the usury is being mentioned. Apparently, no relation is visible between above both matters, but there are many causes of their connection. Two important reasons out of them are being stated as under:

1.   Due to devouring the usury, unkindness and cordial weakness increases, because: a.  Spirit of obedience and loyalty comes to an end due to taking unlawful earning greedily. b.   Avarice and misery arises in the human being due to devouring the usury.

2.   According to a history, aim of one by one revelation of the verses about above-mentioned two matters (restriction on the Usury, and the Battles of Badr and ‘Uhud) is that, the frequent usury matters of Muslims were with the Jews at that time. Therefore, having no concern with them was very difficult, and during the incident of the Battle of ‘Uhud, the Jews Hypocrites had interfered intensely. So the Muslims were warned that they should stop borrowing and lending money on usury. Otherwise, relations with these deceivers would remain established by violence due to the usury, which would become cause of loss in future.

‘Az-‘aafam-muzaa-‘afah – (doubling and quadrupling) it does not mean “Devour not usury, doubling and quadrupling on the sum lent, but a little”. The fact is that during the times of ignorance, usury was devoured just like nowadays the moneylenders, banks and commercial organizations get interest upon their capital, that is to say; they lend one hundred $ and that is increased doubling and quadrupling (due to compound interest). It is characteristic of the Usury that the people, who are poor, they become poorer to poorest and who are rich, they become more and richest. This doubling and quadrupling of usury has been pointed out in this verse.

A usurer, who gets unlawful gain from the poor and indigent people due to their weakness, he does not bear any kind of labor but takes greedily earning of his lent money. Likewise, at first his own body’s parts become disable. On the other side, he becomes cause to do in-efficacious the labor of borrower. Labor and hard working of the borrower becomes valueless. He hands over/surrenders his earnings after hardships in the form of interest to the lender. Besides this, the helpless debtor/borrower falls into the disgrace economically, socially and morally. Moreover, the person who lends money; he becomes lover of ease, dull and lazy. The spirit to strive and struggle in the Way of Allah Almighty, to sacrifice and to sympathize with the creature of Allah Almighty goes to an end from his breast. He gets all sorts of comfort whereas other people work hard. Others earn and he eats. Poverty of the poor person increases. And at the same time wealth and lordship of the rich increases.

Commentary

Seventy companions (may Allah be pleased with them) of Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) were killed in the Battle of ‘Uhud. Paternal Uncle of Holy Prophet (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him), named Amir Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) was also killed with them and he was granted the title of Saiyidush-Shuhadaaa’ (Chief of the Martyrs). Polytheists disgraced very brutally the dead body of Amir Hamza (May Allah Almighty be pleased with him). One eye of Holy Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) was injured, one lower right side tooth out of the front four teeth was broken, chain ring of his own helmet broke and penetrated in his cheek, forehead was wounded and his (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) body covered with blood. His foot staggered, he (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) fell down on the ground and became senseless.

The infidels proclaimed that Holy Prophet (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) had been killed. Muslims were confused and the people were stunned. After some time, when Holy Prophet (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) came in senses, this sentence was on his tongue, “How that nation will get prosperity, which wounded her Prophet’s face, who used to call them towards God”.

Observing these brutal tyrannies of the polytheists, Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) intended to imprecate for some tyrant people out of them, but it was not acceptable to Allah Almighty. Therefore, the people for whom Holy Prophet (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) was going to invoke a curse, Allah Almighty put all of them down in the feet of Holy Prophet (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) after a few days, and made them venturesome soldiers of Islam.

The intent to describe from this verse is that neither a mankind has any authority, nor complete knowledge. Although, the infidels are tyrannizing the Muslims but it is the Will of Allah Almighty. Whether He relents toward them or punishes them. Whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth belongs to Allah Almighty. He forgives whom He wills and guides towards the light of Belief, but arrests in the punishment of infidelity whom He wills. But Allah’s Praise of Mercy and Forgiveness keeps Superiority on His entire other Praises. He neither desires to put someone in trouble and nor punish anyone until the time someone does not reach the last stage of bad doings and disobedience.

Commentary

The help of Allah Almighty reached in the form of angles (peace be upon them) and all the invisible stuff were provided so that fear and confusion from the hearts of Muslims get away and they acquire peace and satisfaction. Otherwise, help of Allah Almighty is neither needy of such things, nor bound of reasons. His command, when He intends a thing, is only that He says unto it: Be! and it is, or when He wishes, disgrace and abject the Infidels without any battle. The help, which Angels (peace be upon them) bring, cannot do so without permission and power of Allah Almighty. Allah is the Mighty and the Overcoming. He is the Wise and Knows very well that which type of means would be suitable to affect His purpose.

It is our observation from the daily life that the results and events manifest from the particular motives. For example, the thirst is quenched with drinking water, the cure of hunger is taking food, the death happens when the heartbeat stops. This law has too much big universal status that believing in it has become part of the mankind’s faith. When and where any result occurs, the people begin to discover its reason. Likewise, if any person wants to produce a special result or particular situations, then he brings into effect necessary causes for them. Similarly, it has become human being’s belief that no result can be out without motives. Whereas, it is the fact that a very Mighty and Wise Power has been working behind this law, the Hand of Allah Almighty is working behind the relation of motives and results.

Having trust in the apparent motives is the sign of our belief’s weakness. If Allah Almighty wills then the result can be produced without any apparent motive. The promise of Angle’s help (peace be upon them) in the Battle of Badr reminds us that instead of trusting in the apparent motives, we should have perfect trust in complete Divine Power (Omnipotence) of Allah Almighty.

Commentary

The religious scholars say that this verse signifies towards the Battle of Badr. While the Muslims frightened after observing a large number of Infidels, Allah Almighty commanded for their consolation, “Is it not sufficient for you that your Lord should support you with angels (peace be upon them) sent down from the sky for your help against the Infidels?”

Then Allah Almighty affirmed, “if you persevere, prove to be patient, fear Allah Almighty and keep away from evil, and the enemy’s Army attacks you suddenly, then your Lord will help you with five thousand instead of three thousand angels (peace be upon them) sweeping on special marked horses”.

Strength of Infidels was one thousand in the field of battle. Therefore, Allah Almighty promised to send one thousand Angels (peace be upon them) as it has been mentioned in Surah ‘Anfaal (Spoils of War). When the Muslims felt confusion, then Allah Almighty increased the strength of Angels (peace be upon them) threefold, because the strength of the Infidels was threefold than Muslims. Allah Almighty appointed that if they would persevere, show firmness and stability, stand still to fight their enemies, fear from Allah Almighty and keep away from the evil, then five thousand Angels (peace be upon them) will be sent down from the sky. Even if the disbelievers get more help from somewhere, you should not be confused. Allah Almighty will help you. It comes in the histories that the help of Kuuz bin Jabir did not reach the polytheists. The Muslims acquired greatest victory over the disbelievers. Many disbelievers were killed, some were arrested and who remained alive, they returned being abject and disgraced. This Battle of Badr happened to be cause of difference between the right and the wrong, and it became a golden page of the history of Muslim’s bright past.

123.  And Allah had already given you the victory at Badr, when ye were contemptible. So observe your duty to Allah in order that ye may be thankful.
123.  Wa  laqad  nasara-kumUllaahu  bi-Badrinw-wa  ‘antum  ‘azillah.  Fatta-qUllaaha  la-‘allakum  tash-kuruun.

Commentary

Badr  - The first battle between Islam and Infidelity was fought on 17th Ramadan 2 AH. In the battlefield of Badr, a handful number of Muslims got such graceful victory that the spine of infidelity was broken. The Infidels judged first time about the strength of the Muslims. ‘Antum  ‘azillah  (you were contemptible). At that time, strength of Muslims was 313 (three hundred and thirteen only) including old, young, little (boys) and elder, who might be able to fight. They all did not have even proper weapons to fight. This entire Army had only 70 (seventy) camels and two horses. The swords and lances of some of the persons were broken. Even that, some persons were carrying only staffs of the date trees for proceeding to the crusade.

Some crusaders of Islam were such persons, who were not able to fight due to their age and height, and the Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) wished that they should not go in the battlefield. But after observing their longing, he (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) was compelled to let them permit to go.

The Battle of Badr was a very strong test of the Muslims’ courage and spirit. One thousand Quraysh braves attacked under command of well conversant generals including Abu Jahal {the father of ignorance and uncle of Prophet Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him)}. Many of them were riders. The men in armor out of them were three hundred. They all had each type of arms and equipment for war.

These one thousand Army Personnel, Intoxicated with power, assaulted three hundred and thirteen Muslims. But in the first assault this great multitude was compelled to surrender. Their seventy persons were slain and the Muslims arrested the same numbers. Those overcame who were weak and those were disgraced who were powerful.

This verse contains very great lesson in itself to satisfy the injured Muslims of the Battle of ‘Uhud and desire of pleasing the weak Muslims. If Allah Almighty can support the Truth to conquer during its prime time of helplessness, then why the  Billions of the Muslims of today should be distressed in mind. They should put their trust in Allah Almighty and use their entire strength in eminence of Islam.

Quran Chapter 3- 122 (Pt-4, Stg-1) (L-450) - درس قرآن

Sketch of battlefield – Battle of ‘Uhad

Surah ‘Aali-‘Im-raan (The Family of ‘Imran) – Chptr – 3)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

122.  When two parties of you almost fell away, and Allah was their Protecting Friend. And in Allah let believers put their trust.
122.  ‘Iz  hammat-taaa-‘ifataani  minkum  ‘an-  tafshalaa,  wallaahu  Waliy-yu-humaa. Wa ‘alallaahi  fal-yata-wakkalil-Mu’-minuun.

Commentary

Taaa-‘ifataani- (Two parties), the aim from these two parties is the people of those two tribes ‘Banu Harthah and Banu Salmah’, who had become broken hearted and almost fallen away at the time of the Battle of ‘Uhud.

The plan of the battlefield has been described in the pervious lesson. You have read it earlier that the total numbers of Muslims were just one thousand against three thousand Quraysh braves. Three hundred Fraudster Hypocrites returned in the way out of those one thousand with their leader ‘Abd-Allah ibn Ubayy . it was not extraordinary thing for feeble-hearted persons to be worried after observing this situation. The people of ‘Banu Harthah’ and ‘Banu Salmah’ became perplexed and thought, “What will happen now?” Allah Almighty raised feelings of ambition and courage in their hearts, and expelled the concept of deficiency and majority of manpower from their hearts.

The Muslims advanced with such power of trust in Allah Almighty that the spirit of Infidels went to end and they began to run from the battleground. The Warriors of Islam began to arrest them and collect their equipment. When the fifty archers, appointed at the hill-pass, observed this situation, they also involved in it. Even they forgot the warning of Holy Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allah Almighty be upon him) and did not care to their leader’s advice.

Khalid bin al-Waleed had not yet embraced Islam. He was leading the enemy’s Army (of Makkan Infidels). As soon as he observed that the hill-pass was without the archers, he collected his deserting companions, attacked with their help from that side and changed the map of battlefield. The Muslims were confused and they suffered with many casualties. Even the Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) personally was injured.

The Muslims drew up in a line again. They advanced and engaged in a desperate undertaking once again, beat the Quraysh braves and drove them back. The world knew that deficiency or surplus manpower had no value in the battlefield, but the steadfastness and patience of the crusaders, victory and support from Allah Almighty are of use.
