Commentary
‘
It has been mentioned earlier
that the people of Sodom and its outskirts had been involved in a
very bad and disgusting habit (carnal copulation against nature). Allah
Almighty chose His Prophet Lot (peace be upon Him) and sent Him unto those
people to cause to know them. He (peace be upon Him) explained about the evils
of their obscene act.
It seems that they had
understood it that really, it was a dirty and defiled act, and its consequence
is not other than a ruin. But instead of being abashed due to this unchaste
act, a stubborn arose in their hearts. It was required that they were ashamed
on their vicious act after understanding. But instead, it happened that they
began to blush that another person was going to admonish them about the badness
of their act, as though, their comprehension was less than Him. They thought:
We had to give up this evil at our own with our pleasure. Now we shall never
leave it.
This is the devilish trick,
with which Satan has obstructed and is baring many servants of God Almighty
from the Straight Path, and deprives them entirely from the special advice of
the Messengers of Allah Almighty (peace be upon Them). This perversion arises
in their hearts that: Who is this person, preventing us from our deed?
The nation of Noah (peace be
upon Him) was crazed in the same way and they drowned. The tribe of ‘Aad was
killed in the same mania. The people of Thamud ruined
themselves with their same thought. This is the swagger due to which, improper
stubbornness arises. Human being accepts his death, but does not wish to see
any other greater, a little, than him, and coming into stubbornness, commits
forbidden deeds immediately and forcibly. Although, he knows that it will
destroy him. It is called the evil of the
soul. Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be
upon Him) has taught us this prayer: Allaahumma ‘a-‘iznii
min sharrin-nafsii. (O God! Save me from the evil of the soul).
Result of those perverse and obstinate people has been described in this verse.
It is
commanded: We rained a rain (of stones) upon them. After that, you saw the
nature of consequence of evildoers. Powers of the earth and the heavens are in
the control and omnipotence of Allah Almighty. Perhaps it would have been the
form; as volcanic materials kept being split. Volcanic materials of brimstone
might be beneath that storey of the land. Those materials of sulphur ran over
with full force and frittered away that part of the land, where those
disobedient people lived. They fell down into that abyss, which was produced
due to flying of that particular part of the earth, and the stones etc. had
been falling upon them. Allah Almighty keep us protected from His wrath.
