Influence of the slavery

Chapter ‘Al-‘A’raaf (The Heights) – Surah – 7)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

138.  And We brought the Children of Israel across the sea, and they came unto a people who were given up to idols which they had. They said: O Moses! Make for us a god even as they have gods. He said: Lo! ye are a folk who know not.

139.  Lo! as for these, their way will be destroyed and all that they are doing is in vain.
138.  Wa  jaa-wazNaa  bi-Baniii-‘Israaa-‘iilal-bahra  fa-‘ataw  ‘alaa  qawminy-ya’-kufuuna  ‘alaaa  ‘asnaa-mil-lahum.  Qaaluu  yaa-Muusaj-‘allanaaa  ‘ilaa-han-  kamaa  lahum  ‘aalihah.  Qaala  ‘innakum  qaw-mun  tajhaluun.

139.  ‘Inna  haaa-‘ulaaa-‘i  mutab-barum-maa  hum  fiihi  wa  baa-tilum-maa  kaanuu ya’-maluun.

Commentary

Ya’-kufuuna – (have been restrained), this word has been derived from ‘akafa, which means “to sit a side and giving full attention towards one point”. The word ‘A’-takaaf has been made also from it, which means “Restraining, curbing one’s passion from religious motives continuing in the Mosque (particularly at Makkah), sitting by oneself in a mosque and think of God (Allah) Almighty”.

‘Asnaa-min – (idols), it is plural of sanam. Any image or thought, which is displayed in a form of any statue or idol; is called Sanam. The idol, to which these people used to worship, was of a cow, which is a collection of useful thing for the mankind. In the beginning, the people used to keep its statue in front to show the idea of “Lord”. Then they forgot “Lord” and began to worship it.

‘Al-bahru – (Sea or river), the aim from this word ‘Al-bahru is, that branch of “The Red Sea” which is in the middle of Egypt and Sinai Peninsula. When the Children of Israel flew away from Egypt under the command of Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him), they reached the coast across the Sea with the Grace of God Almighty. They saw there some people, who were going to worship an idol, which was lying before them. They also thought: What is problem in it if, we worship God and retain any statue in front of us to keep the thinking at one point? Therefore, they came unto Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) and said: We should also be permitted to make the countenances, statues and idols as they have made, so that, we should worship keeping them in front.

Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) replied them: You don’t know that what harm does exist in it. Listen! That, which they have been doing, is baseless absurdity and it shall be finished one day, because there is a lot of loss and harm in it, without any benefit. The Children of Israel had been dwelling in Egypt for a long time between the idol worshipers. When they saw the people here worshiping idols, the same passion was born into them again. Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) said to them: It is a net of polytheism. It is our duty to remove it.

137b.  And the fair Word of thy Lord was fulfilled for the Children of Israel because of their endurance. And We annihilated (all) that Pharaoh and his folk had done and the structures they have raised.

Commentary

Kalimatu – (the Word, utterance, conversation), usually it is written as Kalimah. In the Holy Qur’an, it is written with long ت (T) at this place. Every meaningful word, which comes out from the mouth, is called kalimah. In this verse, the aim from this word is, that promise/covenant, which was made by Allah Almighty through the tongue of Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) that: The Children of Israel will be appointed as heirs and successors of the land and all things relating to Pharaoh and his folk after annihilating them.

‘Al-husnaa – (of the goodness), this word is pronoun of comparison toward excellence, and it is feminine of ‘Ahsan. Both words have been derived from the word hasnun, which means “goodness, beauty, and fair”. ‘Ahsan means “amusing, beautiful, heart-alluring”. As the word Kalimah is feminine, therefore, instead of the word ‘ahsan, its adjective ‘al-husnaa has come here.

DammarNaa – (We annihilated). It is past tense, and its origin is tadmiir, which has been derived from damaar. It means annihilation and ruin. Tadmiir means “to annihilate and ruin”.

It has been commanded by God Almighty in this verse: We drowned Pharaoh along with his people and made the Children of Israel heirs of fertile land of the Egypt and the Syria. Kingdom of their kings spread in the entire world slowly and gradually, and so, that covenant of kindness, which Allah Almighty made with the Children of Israel, was fulfilled. As they suffered the tyrannies of Pharaoh and his people for a long time, therefore, it was a reward of their patience. They endured those troubles silently, which Pharaoh cast over them. We annihilated that trick and imposture; which was played by Pharaoh and his nation, being united mutually, by flaunting their pride and arrogance, to tease the poor and feeble people of Israel. Leaving their palaces, which were high and wide enough, they sat into the depths of the sea, whereas the Children of Israel began to rise in the world.

It has been described very clearly in this verse that well-being and prosper of the human being depends on the accuracy of his morals and habits. Those people, who consider that power and wealth makes a man successful, whether his morals and habits are worse, the strongest opponents can be made soft with the riches and most severe adversary can be crushed with the power. May it be so; that this deception is useful for some days and the powerful people consider that now we have conquered the entire world completely. None can overawe to us now. But it is a false notion which has ruined and destroyed many people. Causes of their ruin and destruction are produced automatically about which they can never think. Suddenly, they lay prostrated on their back. And their opponents, whom they had kept pressed and who were considered weak, come up due to their patience and endurance.

136.  Therefore We took retribution from them; therefore We drowned them in the sea; because they denied Our Revelations and were heedless of them.

137a.  And We caused the folk who were despised to inherit the eastern parts of the land and the western parts thereof which We had blessed.
136.  Fanta-qamNaa  minhum  fa-‘agraq-Naahum  fil-yammi  bi-‘annahum  kazzabuu  bi-‘AayaatiNaa  wa  kaanuu  ‘anhaa  gaafi-liin.

137a.  Wa  ‘aw-rasNal-qaw-mallaziina  kaanuu  yustaz-‘afuuna  mashaariqal-‘arzi  wa  magaariba-hallatii  baarakNaa  fiihaa.

Commentary

‘Anta-qamNaa – (We took retribution), it is past tense and its origin is ‘intaqaam (retribution), which has been derived from the word niqmatun. Niqmah means torture, pain, trouble and calamity etc. ‘Intaqaam means to hurt, to inflict, to punish after snatching ease and comfort. Taking back the blessing and putting in the trouble.

Mashaariqal-‘arzi  wa  magaariba-haa – (the eastern parts of the land and the western parts thereof), aim from it is the fertile areas of Syria and Egypt, which used to produce the crops and grain densely and in abundance. First of all, the Children of Israel took possession of Palestine, then their great Kings took over vast parts of the land.

The people of Pharaoh were overwhelmed quickly with many calamities successively. When any distress used to come, they used to come unto Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) and say: Pray from your Lord to remove this calamity, we are ready to obey your command. When the calamity was removed, they used to return on their old way. At last, the plague grabbed them and the people began to die. Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) took His nation – the Children of Israel and flew away at night. Many days later, the people of Pharaoh observed and ran behind to arrest them. They found them at the bank of Red Sea. This story will be revised in Surah Shu-‘araaa’ and we have discussed some part of it in Surah Baqarah also. The sea was dried for the Children of Israel and they crossed it easily. Behind them, Pharaoh along with his army came down in the sea. Then the sea was full of water. Pharaoh and his army were drowned.

Allah Almighty commands that when the time came; We took retribution of their stubbornness from them and We drowned all of them in the sea. It was their only treatment, because they used to deny Our Revelations continuously. They suffered many times. If they had sense, they would have to understand and after correction, they were required to adopt the behavior like mankind. But they chose the way of deception and became ignorant intentionally. They used to hear from one ear and let it fly from the other. They suffered afflictions but became blind. It was end of their negligence. At last, they were ruined and God Almighty caused to inherit; those people who were despised (the Children of Israel); their entire things. And they became owners of the land of that country which was considered very lush green and fertile.

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

134.  And when the terror fell on them, they said: O Moses! Pray for us unto thy Lord, because He hath a covenant with thee. If thou removest the terror from us we verily will trust thee and will let the Children of Israel go with thee.

135. But when We did remove from them the terror for a term which they must reach, behold! They broke their covenant.
134.  Wa  lammaa  waqa-‘a  ‘alay-himur-rijzu  qaaluu  yaa-Muusad-‘u  lanaa  Rabbaka  bimaa  ‘ahida-  ‘indaka.  La-‘in  kashafta  ‘annar-rijza  lanu’-minanna  laka  wa  lanur-si-lanna  ma-‘aka  Baniii  ‘Israaa-‘iil.

135.  Falammaa  kashaf-Naa  ‘anhumur-rijza  ‘ilaaa  ‘ajalin  hum  baali-guuhu  ‘izaa  hum  yankusuun.

Commentary

‘Ahida – (He told), it is past tense, which means “to say, to tell something to any individual, to teach the method of any work or to commit to charge someone. ‘Ahida-  ‘indaka – (He hath a covenant with thee, He hath told you), literally, it means that He has given you a guidance i.e. the method of supplication, which He has taught you.

It is commanded that it was a habit of the nation of Pharaoh that; as cunning; they continued doing their work. Whenever any terror used to come for their admonition, after becoming helpless; they used to come unto Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) and say: O Moses (peace be upon Him)! Pray for us unto Your Lord (according to that method, which He has taught You). We promise that if this terror is removed by Your supplication, we verily will trust that You are a true Messenger and we will obey and believe in you, not only this, but we will let the entire Children of Israel go with You.

Then God Almighty says: But when We did remove from them the terror for a term; which they must reach and give them time to repent, they used to break their covenant immediately, as soon as the torment was removed and they used to begin tyrannizing the Children of Israel again, of which, they were habituated.

The human being remains always in such illusion. Neither he understood earlier and nor understands today that he is a mankind. And a way has been prescribed for the human being, which should be adopted by him. And this way has been fixed for him by his Creator and Lord. Leaving it is poisonous for the human being. If he will commit some other works giving up this way, those will be counted in his evil deeds. Sometimes he would have to suffer and sometimes prosperity will come upon him, for causing to know him. If he did not refrain from any condition of the both, then he will be punished due to his own deeds.

Quran Chapter 7 – 132 & 133 (Pt-9, Stg-2) (L-1016) - درس قرآن

Considering that portents were deception

Chapter ‘Al-‘A’raaf (The Heights) – Surah – 7)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

132.  And they said: Whatever portent thou bringest wherewith to bewitch us, we shall not put faith in thee.

133.  So We sent upon them the flood and the locusts and the vermin and the frogs and the blood – a succession of clear signs. But they were arrogant and became a guilty folk.
132.  Wa  qaaluu  mahmaa  ta’-tinaa  bihii  min  ‘Aayatil-li-tas-haranaa  bihaa, famaa  nahuu  laka  bi-mu’-miniin.

133.  Fa-‘arsalNaa  ‘alay-hi-mut-Tuufaana  wal-Jaraada  wal-Qummala  waz-Zaffaadi-‘a  wad-Dama  ‘aayaatim-mufas-salaat.  Fastak-baruu  wa  kaanuu  qawmam-mujri-miin.

Commentary

Mahmaa – (whatever), actually, this word is maamaa. As per Arabic language maa means which. So by repeating the same word “maa”, its meanings have become “whatever”. During speaking – the second “a” has been converted into “h”. Therefore it became mahmaa. The meaning remained the same.

Behold the obstinacy of the people of Pharaoh! It is true proverb: A man gets ready to lose his life due to stubbornness and persistency. At this stage, we can see that demand of Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) was not too much big. He desired only that the Children of Israel should be sent with Him (peace be upon Him). But haughtiness and sway had blinded and made the nation of Pharaoh mad. Their pride could never permit them that, free of cost slave should let be gone easily from their control.

They themselves used to dwell with luxury. That time was even less civilized than ours. We have been observing them nowadays, who claim that they are very civilized and belong to good breed, but they want to keep the weak nations pressed and give them some amount to accomplish their desires as “A giant will starve on what will suffice a dwarf”. They do never agree to loosen their hold from them.

While this is the condition of today’s claimants of the civilization, then there is no wonder in brazen and arrogance of the nation of Pharaoh. Behold! What are they saying to Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him)? They said: O Moses! Whatever portent thou bringest wherewith to bewitch us, we shall not put faith in thee (we will not fall into your trap).

After that, it is commanded that Allah Almighty began to let them suffer. The Children of Israel were saved from the afflictions, but troubles of the flood and the locusts and the vermin were sent upon the people of Pharaoh. Abundance of the frogs made them difficult to live with comfort and the water became for them the blood, but wow: Hey carelessness! Whenever affliction used to come; they began to weep, and when it was removed, then again the same arrogance and stubbornness.

Indeed, their nature had been deteriorated and they had become accustomed to persecution. They had lost such ability that they might distinguish between good and evil, and listen to the advisers. These are the signs of badness.

130.  And We straitened Pharaoh’s folk with famine and dearth of fruits, that peradventure they might heed.

131.  So whenever good befell them, they said: This is ours; and whenever evil smote them they scribed it to the evil auspices of Moses and those with him. Surely their evil auspice was only with Allah, but most of them knew not.

Commentary

Si-niina – (the years), this word is plural of sanatun, which means “a year”. The meaning from “straitening since years” is that “famine and dearth of fruits used to come on them every year”.

Yat-tayyaruu – (took bad omens, foreboding), origin of this word is tayyarun, which has been derived from tayr. Tayr means “bird”. Those people used to take bad omens by means of the birds, so the meaning of yat-tayyaruu has become “to take omen”.

They used to take omens in such way that: If someone devised to do any work but any bird flew away from front, they used to say: Now we shall not do this work, because flying of any bird at the time of correct work; is a bad symptom. The word Taa-‘ir has been made from it also, which means a bird, that is why; it also aims “misfortune, foreboding and wretchedness”.

Allah Almighty commands: We sent down the disaster of famine on the nation of Pharaoh. Fruits became scarce in the cities. Its actual object was that they should fear and become human. But their brazen soared over. If there was good condition, they used to say: It must be so, because we are honorable and decent people. There is no reason of disaster’s coming on us.

If any misfortune befell on them; they used to say: It entire (Let us flee to God) is adversity of Moses (peace be upon Him) and His nation, effect of which; we have to suffer. Whereas the Children of Israel were safe from every kind of disaster due to the blessing of Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him), and which disaster used to come down, that was on the people of Pharaoh only.

Those foolish people could not understand that this all was result of their own wicked deeds, which was being sent by Allah Almighty. Keeping in good condition and trapping in bad condition; both are in the power of Allah Almighty. And He keeps someone in good condition and someone in worse according to His customized expediency. His aim from it is that the people should learn. Calamity and comfort both have this virtue that they provide chance for the human being for turning unto the Real Master (God Almighty).

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

It is the most objectionable bestial nature of a mankind that he desires to keep other people pressed (under his control). If accidentally, someone succeeds to obtain such means, then it is not known, what he begins to consider himself. Not only this that he considers slight to every other individual but he wishes to keep the people as his obedient and slaves according to his will by abasing them.

The Prophets and Messengers (peace be upon Them) are sent by Allah Almighty to admonish and cause to understand him, Who desires to cause to know the secrets of ups and downs of the world. They say that Allah Almighty has created the people different in strength and weakness. He has not provided all facilities to everyone. He desires to examine the people in every condition, for instance; how a powerful individual uses his power and how he behaves with the feeble?

Respectable people do not obey the Messengers (peace be upon Them) and they are ruined. But after them, the same kind of proud people are born and then they begin to do the same again. The biggest victim of human tyranny and injustice are probably the Children of Israel. Pharaoh used to torture them of various sorts with the power of his wealth and supporters. It was his boasting that “none is more powerful than me who may resist”. It was his thinking: Nobody can look at me with anger, whether I do - whatever I wish. Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) came to defeat this rebellious and at last, He (peace be upon Him) defeated him.

Allah Almighty has revealed this story in the Holy Qur’an for causing to understand the people of all times, from which, the powerful people should know that their power will not be useful always. Surely, a Day will come when their arrogance will be broken. And the inferior people should keep satisfaction that if they were patient and continued begging from Allah Almighty; certainly, they would get deliverance from the claws of the tyrants. And such power will be given to them after snatching from the powerful people, so that they might be examined also, that how they use their power and strength? And whether they learn from dreadful end of earlier people to them or otherwise?

This Surah was revealed in Makkah. Condition of that place was the same as explained above. The Infidels of Makkah had been tyrannizing the Believers of last Messenger of Allah Almighty, Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) and the People of Islam had been becoming victims of big torments. The impressive Words of Holy Qur’an touched their hearts and now they had full faith that a time will come when their tyrants will be destroyed and their entire airs will be finished. And Allah Almighty will allow us with His favor and Blessing to prevail over them and He will degrade them.

Saying of Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) to the Children of Israel: Be patient. Allah Almighty will destroy your enemies very soon and you have to sit in their place. Then He will observe that what kind of people are you proven in your turn? It was a message of pleasure for the Muslims of Makkah and as though, it was preparing them in advance that Allah Almighty is going to test them by giving them victory on the Infidels very soon. Therefore, they determined in their hearts that they will use their force and power to help the weak and poor in every matter, not to press them. History witnesses that the People of Islam have shown their determination duly fulfilled. The weak and the feeble became strong and powerful because of them. The tyrants suffered a defeat everywhere before them. But alas! Among them too, such people began to be born, who used force against others, forgetting the Command of Allah Almighty and were punished.
