Then what happened

Chapter ‘Al-‘A’raaf (The Heights) – Surah – 7)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

169a.  And a generation hath succeeded them who inherited the Scriptures; they grasp the goods of this low life (as the price of evildoing) and say: It will be forgiven us. And if there came to them (again) the offer of the like, they would accept it (and would sin again).
169a.  Fa-khalafa  mim-  ba’-dihim  khalfunw-  warisul-Kitaaba  ya’-khuzuuna  ‘araza  haazal-‘adnaa  wa  yaquuluuna  sa-yugfaru  lanaa.  Wa  ‘iny-ya’-tihim  ‘arazum-misluhuu  ya’-khuzuuh.

Commentary

Khalafa – (came later, succeeded), it is past tense which is made of “kh-l-f”. It means “those who came/survived after someone, being the successor”. Khalfun– (a degenerate, bad or wicked son), if the children of someone rise unworthy after his death, those children are called khalfun, that is to say; the children, who has fallen from good qualities of their formers. And if the children are worthy and good, those are called khalaf (the dutiful and worthy children).

‘Araza – (the goods), it aims “wealth and property, valuables, revenue and effects etc. which are considered useful in this life.

It is commanded that some of the earlier people were righteous but their successors rose as much unworthy that they made the entire matter disrupt. They possessed Holy Scripture Torah but made It source of income. If they seemed that a provision could be gained from anywhere, changed the words of Torah and sometimes they used to say something else by changing the actual meanings of the verses of Torah. They began to give a verdict according to the will of those who cherished them with gifts, presents and rarities, to please them. If anyone prevented them that such way of act was not correct, they might suffer from the severe wrath of Allah Almighty, in response, they used to say carelessly by shaking their head: We are children of Prophets. Their recommendation will save us clearly.

They used to say: We are dear children of God. We cannot be punished. When the nature of any individual becomes like this, then he takes courage to commit evils and whenever gets any opportunity, earns unlawfully as much as he wishes. Moreover, he seeks the chances: When will any prey be entangled and when shall I achieve my own purpose.

After reciting this verse, those Muslim scholars should confess and be ashamed of their faults who don’t care: Whether have they not been going to explain the Divine’s Laws improperly to please the rich people? Sometimes, the human being commits any such act to please any patron or guardian which is unlawful according to the Law of Divine. At that time, he amuses with such matters which are in accordance with the matters of the Jews, for example; he says: Expedience is in it at the spot that it should be ignored. The door of repentance has been opened. This sin will be forgiven also where other sins will be forgiven. Intercession of so and so (any saint or venerable) will save me.

Allah Almighty save us from these kinds of absurd ideas. Sometimes these kinds of thoughts encourage the humankind to commit a sin. We should take warning from the wicked behavior of the Children of Israel.

Quran Chapter 7 – 168 (Pt-9, Stg-2) (L-1046) -

The Jews scattered

Chapter ‘Al-‘A’raaf (The Heights) – Surah – 7)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

168.  And We have sundered them in the earth as (separate) nations. Some of them are righteous, and some far from that. And We have tried them with good things and evil things that haply they might return.
168.  Wa  qatta’-Naahum  fil-‘arzi  ’umamaa.  Minhu-mus-saali-huuna  wa  min-hum  duuna  zaalik.  Wa  balaw-Naahum  bil-hasanaati  was-sayyi-‘aati  la-‘allahum  yarji-‘uun.

Commentary

Qatta’-Naa – (We have sundered), it is past tense, origin of it is taqtiii’, which has been derived from qata’. Qata’ means “to cut”. Taqtiii’ means “to cut into little pieces”. Here it aims “they were divided in little tribes being dispersed due to the reason of their wicked deeds”.

The Children of Israel were descendants of twelve brothers and they had twelve big lineages, to whom, Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) desired to accommodate in Palestine after getting them liberated from Egypt, where Pharaoh and his nation had made them target for tyranny and torment.

These people entered in the Peninsula of Sinai after crossing the Red Sea. But it was not possible for them to enter Palestine without fighting. Complete detail about this story has been described in Surah ‘Al-Maaa-‘idah that they denied from fighting and wandered in the dreary fields of Sinai Valley for forty years.

At last they conquered Palestine during the times of Prophet Yusha’ (peace be upon Him) and entered in the Holy Land. Then a very powerful sovereignty of the Children of Israel was established. That sovereignty remained established until they remained in the terms of intimacy mutually. The power and sovereignty was lost from them when their organizers departed. At last, due to quarrels with one another, they were dispersed hither and thither.

It has been commanded in this verse: Due to infighting between themselves and mutual rancor, We separated them in little tribes and shed abroad in different countries. Some of them were righteous and maximum people were disobedient and vicious. There was a time when they ruled prosperity as well as were entangled with calamities. They were required to learn and get warning from every kind of circumstances, and acquire collective power again; being unanimous in opinion among themselves, but they continued quarreling with one another, and their condition had gone from bad to worse.

The aim from describing about the circumstances of the Children of Israel is that the Muslims should learn and take a warning from them. And they should never let to lose their mutual alliance and amity. Alas! We did not take warning from their circumstances and could not be united, unanimous in our opinions. Holy Qur’an has been challenging us continuously, but we are those who don’t feel. (God forbid).

Commentary

It was described earlier that Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) prayed in favor of the Children of Israel, that this nation should be made the most superior and respectable in the world as well as in the Hereafter. In response to this prayer, Allah Almighty revealed: Superiority and honor does not depend on race or nationality, but it depends on obedience of Allah Almighty.

The Children of Israel proved with their later on behavior that they consider the Commands of Allah Almighty nothing. They flee from the religion and run towards those things openly; from which they have been forbidden. That’s why, they were kept and will be kept suffering from the humiliation and degradation in the world, and on the Day of Resurrection, they will be punished very severely. It has been mentioned in Torah and Gospel till today. The same has been revised in Surah ‘Al-Baqarah, ‘Aali-‘Imraan and ‘Al-‘A’-Raaf etc. in Holy Qur’an, so that the Muslims should take it a warning for themselves from their circumstances and understand properly that those people who disobey the commands of Allah Almighty, whose behavior is ingratitude and who are arrogant, they are kept contemptible and disgraced in the world and the Hereafter. The same has been described in this verse.

It is commanded that none should forget this happening. Allah Almighty says: O Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him): Your Lord proclaimed clearly that He has predestinated the disgrace and the baseness for the Children of Israel for ever due to their rebellion and immorality. Such people will be born continuously in the world until the Judgment Day who will put them in difficulties and keep them bruised if they did not correct their behavior, and in addition, your Lord will punish them with severe wrath on the Day of Resurrection, because He is Swift in prosecution. Nothing can prevent Him from doing so. Besides this, verily He forgives the sins of those who repent and ward off evil, and He is most Merciful too and sends down His Mercy for them who put themselves right.

The history witnesses that the Children of Israel remained despised and loathed always due to the reason of their own wicked deeds. During the ancient times, they were ruined and destroyed by the Ionians, Bukht Nasar and many others. In the present era; Germany and Hungry etc. banished them, and now they have been living with the support of others. There will be no abode for them if their supporters leave them today. And this all has been described for the Muslims’ admonition and precept.

Allah Almighty has promised for the success and victory of the Muslims also at many places in Holy Qur’an, but with the condition that; if they will remain obedient of the Commands of Allah Almighty, then they will be provided with support and victory, because Islam is the name of God’s obedience. Without obedience; claim of being Muslim is hypocrisy only. And its punishment is the same as mentioned above.

Punishment for the disobedient - Quran Chapter 7 – 165 & 166 (Pt-9, Stg-2) (L-1044) -

Quran Chapter 7 – 165 & 166 (Pt-9, Stg-2) (L-1044) -

Punishment for the disobedient

Chapter ‘Al-‘A’raaf (The Heights) – Surah – 7)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahiminash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

165.  Then when they forgot that whereof they had been reminded, We rescued those who forbade wrong, and visited those who did wrong with dreadful punishment because they were evil-livers.

166.  So when they took pride in that which they had been forbidden, We said unto them: Be ye apes despised and loathed!
165.  Falammaa  nasuu  maa  zukkiruu  bihiii  ‘anjay-Nalla-ziina  yan-hawna  ‘anis-suuu-‘i  wa  ‘akhaz-Nallaziina  zalamuu  bi-‘azaabim-  ba-‘iisim- bimaa  kaanuu  yafsuquun.

166.  Falammaa  ‘ataw  ‘am-maa  nuhuu  ‘anhu  qulNaa  lahum  kuunuu  qiradatan  khaasi-‘iin.

Commentary

Ba-‘iisin – (dreadful, grievous, hard to bear), this word has been derived from baa-‘as. Baa-‘as means awe, harshness, severity, difficulty.

Khaasi-‘iin – (despised and loathed) this word is plural of khaasi-‘un, which has been made from khasun. Khasun means “avaunt, begone, curse”. Khaasi-‘un is that individual or animal which is driven out, reproved wherever it goes.

It was described in the previous verse that the wise individuals of ‘Iilah preached the people of ‘Iilah that the fish should not be caught on the day of Sabbath in any way. It is disobedience of Allah Almighty. But there was no actual value of the Command of Allah Almighty in their hearts.

They perceived it as: Our intention will be concealed due to our tricks, whereas Allah Almighty knows the condition of the hearts and He is Aware of the intention of everyone. No trick or plan can deceive Him. He loosened them that haply they may abstain from their unbecoming act after thinking but they ignored the advice. At last; what happened with them; has been mentioned here.

It is commanded that when they did not listen to those who preached them, even that some of preachers became silent being frustrated from their guidance, We rescued all of those who forbade them from wicked deeds. But We afflicted those disobedient people in severe wrath as punishment for their disobedience.

But when, even then they did not abstain from wrongdoing and their disobedience increased day by day; then We commanded: Be ye apes and taste the flavor of scorn, contempt and baseness. This incident has been mentioned in Surah Baqarah also and was explained clearly.

The Children of Israel knew and understood it properly. Accordingly, the mention of that incident exists in their Holy Books even till today. The human being should learn from this story that he should go on that Path without any kind of trick or deception; with pure intention, which Allah Almighty has fixed for him.

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

164.  And when a community among them said: Why preach ye to a folk whom Allah is about to destroy or punish with an awful doom. They said: In order to be free from guilt before your Lord, and that haply they may ward off (evil).
164.  Wa  ‘iz  qaalat  ‘ummatum-min-hum  lima  ta-‘izuuna  qaw-ma-NIllaahu  muhlikuhum  ‘aw  mu-‘azzibuhum  ‘azaaban-  shadiidaa.

Commentary

Ta-‘izuuna – (you preach), it is an aorist tense which has been made from va’z. Va’z means “to explain someone right for his good-will.

Ma’-ziratan – this word has the same meanings as of ‘uzr and it is another form of that word. ‘Uzr means “the proof of innocence, faultlessness”. Here it aims “to produce the proof of blamelessness” for which, another word is ‘etizar. On other occasions, the meanings of this word come as “to accept the proof” too.

When the people of ‘Iilah saw that huge numbers of fish come on the day of Sabbath, but on other days, they do not come so much, then they began to think: We should contrive in such a way that “the snake dies and the sticks even not broken”. There should not be disobedience openly; even then, we may possess the fish more than enough.

The people along them found out a trick that by digging large drains, they brought the water of the river and poured into the ponds. When they used to open the water of the river into the ponds, the fish used to come with water. On Saturday, they used to close the mouths of the drains. Then they used to catch the fish from ponds easily on Sunday.

The wise people said: It is a trick only. It means hunting clearly on the day of Sabbath. Fear Allah Almighty and don’t disobey Him. They caused to understand them for some days. When they saw that those unruly people do not listen to them, some of them became silent after being frustrated, but others continued to convince them.

It is commanded that it would be in the remembrance of the Jews that one community gave up causing to understand the disobedient people being frustrated and said to them who continued their duty to explain: Why do you try to explain those obstinate people? They will abstain never from their absurdities. Why do you try willing or not willing? It seems that either Allah Almighty will destroy them at once due to their stubbornness or He will cause to suffer them from any severe wrath.

Those people who were causing to understand; said: We shall not give up preaching them so that we may produce the proof of our faultlessness before Allah Almighty that; we tried our best to perform our duty, but they did not accept. We are blameless in this matter. So, we shall be free from guilt before Allah Almighty and be saved from His wrath with them.

In addition to this, we think that haply the fear is produced in their hearts due to our sayings and they abstain from their wicked deeds. It is not lawful to be frustrated in any condition from the Mercy of Allah Almighty.

One more incident

Chapter ‘Al-‘A’raaf (The Heights) – Surah – 7)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahiminash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

163.  And ask them (O Muhammad) of the township that was by the sea. How they did break the Sabbath, how their big fish came unto them visibly upon their Sabbath day and on a day when they did not keep Sabbath came they not unto them. Thus did We try them for they were evil-livers.
163.  Was-‘alhum  ‘anil-qaryatillatii  kaanat  haazi-ratal-bahr.  ‘Iz  ya’-duuna  fis-Sabti  ‘iz  ta’—tii-him  hiitaanu-hum  yawma  Sabti-him  shurra-‘anw-wa  yaw-ma  laa  yas-bituuna,  laa  ta’-tiihim.  Kazaalika  nabluuhum  bimaa  kaanuu  yafsuquun.

Commentary

‘Al-qaryatu – (the township), many commentators have explained that this township was ‘Iilah, which was situated by the shore of Red Sea between Madian and Tur, and because the sea was near to them, therefore, these people were accustomed of fish hunting. To which incident it signifies, was happened during the period of Prophet David (peace be upon Him). Nowadays that place is called Aqbah where the township ‘Iilah was populated.

Haazi-ratal-bahri – (by the sea), the word haazirah is from hazuur, which means “to be in front, to be present”. Haazirah means “in front (of), opposite to, near, adjacent etc.” ‘Al-bahri aims “the Red Sea”. ‘As-Sabtu – as per Arabic language, it aims the day of Saturday. This day was prescribed for worship and observed as closed holiday against dealings and business for the Jews.

Hiitaanu – (the numbers of fish), this word is plural of huut. In Arabic, it means a fish. The word Shurra-‘an is plural of shaari’ which is subject from the word shara’Shara’ means to appear. Shaari’ is the thing which appears in abundance and may be seen by everyone openly. A wide road, which is visible to all, is called Shaari’ (highway, public road). Here it aims “the fish used to leap and jump in the water in abundance in a short while and those were very fat and fresh”.

About stubbornness, fearlessness and obstinacy of a class from the Children of Israel has been described in this verse. Residents of ‘Iilah Township were very refractory and bold in breaking the Divine Law. It was a special command for the Children of Israel that they should do nothing on the day of Saturday save worship of God. So, besides other any kind of business or dealings, the fish hunting was prohibited too for them on Saturday.

The people of ‘Iilah were involved in this trial that during the days other than Sabbath (Saturday), either the fish did not come in the sea unto them or if came, that were very less in quantity. But on the day of Sabbath (Saturday) the sea was full of big fish. It was a test of their obedience. It is commanded in the verse that Allah Almighty involves the disobedient people in test and trial in the same way, so that they may be habituated of obedience and give up obstinacy.
