Remaining part of previous story

Chapter ‘Al-‘A’raaf (The Heights) – Surah – 7)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahiminash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

164.  And when a community among them said: Why preach ye to a folk whom Allah is about to destroy or punish with an awful doom. They said: In order to be free from guilt before your Lord, and that haply they may ward off (evil).
164.  Wa  ‘iz  qaalat  ‘ummatum-min-hum  lima  ta-‘izuuna  qaw-ma-NIllaahu  muhlikuhum  ‘aw  mu-‘azzibuhum  ‘azaaban-  shadiidaa.  Qaaluu  ma’-ziratan  ‘ilaa  Rabbikum  wa  la-‘allahum  yattaquun.

Commentary

Ta-‘izuuna – (you preach), it is an aorist tense which has been made from va’z. Va’z means “to explain someone right for his good-will.

Ma’-ziratan – this word has the same meanings as of ‘uzr and it is another form of that word. ‘Uzr means “the proof of innocence, faultlessness”. Here it aims “to produce the proof of blamelessness” for which, another word is ‘etizar. On other occasions, the meanings of this word come as “to accept the proof” too.

When the people of ‘Iilah saw that huge numbers of fish come on the day of Sabbath, but on other days, they do not come so much, then they began to think: We should contrive in such a way that “the snake dies and the sticks even not broken”. There should not be disobedience openly; even then, we may possess the fish more than enough.

The people along them found out a trick that by digging large drains, they brought the water of the river and poured into the ponds. When they used to open the water of the river into the ponds, the fish used to come with water. On Saturday, they used to close the mouths of the drains. Then they used to catch the fish from ponds easily on Sunday.

The wise people said: It is a trick only. It means hunting clearly on the day of Sabbath. Fear Allah Almighty and don’t disobey Him. They caused to understand them for some days. When they saw that those unruly people do not listen to them, some of them became silent after being frustrated, but others continued to convince them.

It is commanded that it would be in the remembrance of the Jews that one community gave up causing to understand the disobedient people being frustrated and said to them who continued their duty to explain: Why do you try to explain those obstinate people? They will abstain never from their absurdities. Why do you try willing or not willing? It seems that either Allah Almighty will destroy them at once due to their stubbornness or He will cause to suffer them from any severe wrath.

Those people who were causing to understand; said: We shall not give up preaching them so that we may produce the proof of our faultlessness before Allah Almighty that; we tried our best to perform our duty, but they did not accept. We are blameless in this matter. So, we shall be free from guilt before Allah Almighty and be saved from His wrath with them.

In addition to this, we think that haply the fear is produced in their hearts due to our sayings and they abstain from their wicked deeds. It is not lawful to be frustrated in any condition from the Mercy of Allah Almighty.

Chapter ‘Al-‘A’raaf (The Heights) – Surah – 7)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahiminash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

163.  And ask them (O Muhammad) of the township that was by the sea. How they did break the Sabbath, how their big fish came unto them visibly upon their Sabbath day and on a day when they did not keep Sabbath came they not unto them. Thus did We try them for they were evil-livers.
163.  Was-‘alhum  ‘anil-qaryatillatii  kaanat  haazi-ratal-bahr.  ‘Iz  ya’-duuna  fis-Sabti  ‘iz  ta’—tii-him  hiitaanu-hum  yawma  Sabti-him  shurra-‘anw-wa  yaw-ma  laa  yas-bituuna,  laa  ta’-tiihim.  Kazaalika  nabluuhum  bimaa  kaanuu  yafsuquun.

Commentary

‘Al-qaryatu – (the township), many commentators have explained that this township was ‘Iilah, which was situated by the shore of Red Sea between Madian and Tur, and because the sea was near to them, therefore, these people were accustomed of fish hunting. To which incident it signifies, was happened during the period of Prophet David (peace be upon Him). Nowadays that place is called Aqbah where the township ‘Iilah was populated.

Haazi-ratal-bahri – (by the sea), the word haazirah is from hazuur, which means “to be in front, to be present”. Haazirah means “in front (of), opposite to, near, adjacent etc.” ‘Al-bahri aims “the Red Sea”. ‘As-Sabtu – as per Arabic language, it aims the day of Saturday. This day was prescribed for worship and observed as closed holiday against dealings and business for the Jews.

Hiitaanu – (the numbers of fish), this word is plural of huut. In Arabic, it means a fish. The word Shurra-‘an is plural of shaari’ which is subject from the word shara’Shara’ means to appear. Shaari’ is the thing which appears in abundance and may be seen by everyone openly. A wide road, which is visible to all, is called Shaari’ (highway, public road). Here it aims “the fish used to leap and jump in the water in abundance in a short while and those were very fat and fresh”.

About stubbornness, fearlessness and obstinacy of a class from the Children of Israel has been described in this verse. Residents of ‘Iilah Township were very refractory and bold in breaking the Divine Law. It was a special command for the Children of Israel that they should do nothing on the day of Saturday save worship of God. So, besides other any kind of business or dealings, the fish hunting was prohibited too for them on Saturday.

The people of ‘Iilah were involved in this trial that during the days other than Sabbath (Saturday), either the fish did not come in the sea unto them or if came, that were very less in quantity. But on the day of Sabbath (Saturday) the sea was full of big fish. It was a test of their obedience. It is commanded in the verse that Allah Almighty involves the disobedient people in test and trial in the same way, so that they may be habituated of obedience and give up obstinacy.

Commentary

It is not known that what kind of adventure has fallen on the human being that he is provoked from that individual who advises him correctly, runs away from his well-wishers by charging them with different kinds of blames. And he commits against that whatever they say, and its only reason is not any other than one’s airs and stubbornness. After studying the circumstances of the Children of Israel, it has been clear.

These people were residents of Syria, where their forefather named Jacob (peace be upon Him), whose surname was Israel and who was grandson of Prophet Abraham (peace be upon Him), used to dwell. He (peace be upon Him) had twelve sons. One of them whose name was Joseph (peace be upon Him); reached Egypt by a strange way (full detail about Him will be discussed in Surah Joseph – Part 12 & 13). Gradually, He (peace be upon Him) became king of Egypt. He (peace be upon Him) called to bring His Father, Jacob (peace be upon Him), mother and all brothers, when famine occurred in Syria and arranged for them to live in Egypt.

After the death of Prophet Joseph (peace be upon Him), the empire of Egypt was lost from the control of the Children of Israel and actual natives of Egypt came in power. They began to tyrannize the Children of Israel very severely and made the entire nation their slaves.

At last, Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) came and brought the Children of Israel back to Syria again from Egypt. He (peace be upon Him) said to them: This country is your ancestral native land. Take its possession and dwell here comfortably. They said: That Township has been seized by very strong and tall people. We are unable to fight against them, drive them out and take possession of that place.

They were punished due to this disobedience and had to go through fruitless toil in the forests and wilderness for forty years and missed the right path in Tiyyah Valley. Those favors are being reminded here which were bestowed to them during their nomadic life. At last, when the period of wandering was over, at that time, Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) had departed and the Arihaa town was conquered by them under the command of Prophet Yusha’ (peace be upon Him).

The manners and methods mentioned in the previous verse, were for entering and living in the same town which were taught to them. But they were absolutely against the instructions and spoiled their work due to haughtiness. Instead of adopting humility and modesty, they made the arrogance and insolence their habit and began to prate absurdities.

At last, they were punished and severe plague spread into them. It is written that seventy thousand people died within only half a day. Our Lord! Save us from Your disobedience, protect us from every disaster and misfortune. Amen.

In fact we have much to learn from the story of the Children of Israel. Holy Qur’an has warned us by describing frequently their story that we should not approach too close to those matters in which the Jews were trapped, destroyed and doomed.

Commentary

The Children of Israel wandered nomadic in the wilderness of Sinai, which is called Tiyyah Valley also; for forty years after coming out from Egypt. It was a punishment against their disobedience. Mention of it has been passed in detail in Surah Baqarah and Surah Maa-‘idah. Allah Almighty bestowed them with many great favors in those days. The clouds overshadowed them in the sunlight. The water springs gushed forth from the rock for their drinking. The Manna and the Quails were provided for their food. But these people were accustomed of eating the esculent vegetables, greenness, pulses and grains. When they were fed up by taking food of one kind during wandering in the forest, then they were commanded on their request that they should go to the township and dwell there. The name of that township was “Arihaa”, which was situated near The Temple of Jerusalem”, a well populated and verdant township. Some scholars have told that it was The Temple of Jerusalem. The Children of Israel conquered this township during the period of Prophet Yusha’ (peace be upon Him) after the death of Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him).

It has been commanded in this verse: We ordered the Children of Israel that they should dwell in this township and allowed them to eat its productions as much as they wished but they should not be proud and arrogant. They should not enter the township like conquerors, crying out, playing on musical instruments and making a noise absurdly, on the contrary, they should enter in the condition of bowing their heads before Allah Almighty and feeling sorrow for their sins. If they will adopt such behavior; We shall be kind to them and forgive their errors, and We shall increase the reward of those, who will be right-doers. That is to say; instantly; one township has been conquered, if their character and behavior will remain correct, then they will be given some more townships. Moreover, the remuneration to the right-doers will be given on the Day of Resurrection separately.

Allah Almighty has promised with those people who follow the prescribed rules and regulations (prescribed by Allah Almighty) that they will be kept well in this world as well as they will be provided ease and comfort in the life after death.

160b.  And We caused the clouds to overshadow them and sent down for them the Manna and the quails (saying): Eat of the good things wherewith We have provided you. They wronged Us not, but they were wont to wrong themselves.
160b.  Wa  zallalNaa  ‘alayhimul-gamaama  wa  ‘an-zalNaa  ‘alay-himul-Manna  was-Sal-waa.  Kuluu  min- tayyi-baati  maa  razaq-Naakum-  wa  maa  zalamuuNaa  wa  laakin  kaanuuu  ‘anfusahum  yaz-limuun.

Commentary

zallalNaa – (We arranged to overshadow them), origin of this word is tazliil which has been derived from the word zillatun. Zillatun means “a sunshade”, that is to say; such thing which overshadows upon any other. derived

Sal-waa – (we have recited this word in Surah Baqarah, which means “the Quail”). These birds used to assemble in the evening all around the Children of Israel in sufficient numbers. In the darkness, they used to catch them easily.

Manna – a sweet thing like taranjbin (Persian manna), which used to rain in abundance at night in the dew and they used to collect it in the morning.

It was told in the previous verse that twelve springs of water were flown in the jungle for the Children of Israel. In this verse, it is commanded that clouds were sent for them to be saved from the sunlight of summer season which remained over them as a shelter during the entire daylight and the Manna and the quails for their food.

In short, the water, the shelter and the food were arranged well for them in the wilderness and desert but they did not thank God and began to commit such kind of following works which were totally improper according to the circumstances:

·         They began to hoard their food for the next time. If the food is provided daily regularly in time then what is need to keep it for the next time. It is not sagacity to take stale food while the fresh food is available in time. But in accord with their old habit, they began to save the food. Consequently, that food was spoiled.

·         They began to demand different things like onion, garlic, pulse and wheat etc. in the wilderness, which was quite reason-less. According to Arabic language, such inopportune music is called tyranny.

It is commanded in the verse: They harmed themselves by saying so unwise and demanding such unseasonable things; instead of hurting Us, so they were called thankless, were impatient and in addition, they began to remain in the disposition of grief.

The human being should be thankful to Allah Almighty on that which He has given to him and he should not long for unnecessary things. Then he will see: how the life is comfortable? The behavior of the Children of Israel incurs warning for us. Those people were neither just patient nor grateful, so it was the reason that they were surrounded in many troubles.

These all matters have been reminded to them in the Holy Qur’an again and again, but defying the advice has become their addiction. Obstinacy and self-praise has become their national symbol. If they did not reap advantage from this remembrance of Holy Qur’an, they would suffer. We should be saved from such habits and reap benefit fully from the Revelations of Holy Qur’an.

160a.  And We divided them into twelve tribes, nations. And We inspired Moses ,when his people asked him for water, saying: Smite with thy staff the rock! And there gushed forth therefrom twelve springs, so that each tribe knew their drinking-place.
160a.  Wa  qatta’-Naahumus-natay- ‘ashrata  ‘asbaatan  ‘umamaa.  Wa  ‘aw-hay-Naaa  ‘ilaa  Muusaaa  ‘izis-tasqaahu  qawmuhuuu  ‘a-nizrib-bi-‘asaakal-hajar.  Fambaja-sat  minhusna-taa  ‘ashrata  ‘aynaa.  Qad  ‘alima  kullu  ‘unaasim-mashrabahum.

Commentary

Qatta’-Naa – (We divided), it is a past tense, which has been derived from the word taqtii-‘un, its origin is qata-‘a. Qata-‘a means “to cut”. Taqtii-‘un means “to divide after cutting”.

‘asbaatin – this word is plural of sabat. We have discussed about this word in the last Section of previous Part – 1; ‘Alif – Laaam – Miiim. Here it aims – the grand children of one grandfather. Surname of Prophet Jacob (peace be upon Him) was Israel. He (peace be upon Him) had twelve sons. Their children were called ‘asbaat; and they became twelve tribes, which are famous as “The Children of Israel”.

‘Imbaja-sat – (gushed forth), it is also past tense, origin of which is ‘ambajaas, and which has been derived from the word bajasa – it means “appearance”. Actual meaning of ‘Ambajaas is “To ooze, to percolate”. In such situation, the word ‘anfajarat has been used in Surah Baqarah (Part – 2), which means “to flow gently from pores. By mixing both words, it would be aimed “at first the water began to ooze, then, after a while, it began to flow”.

In this verse, the same kindnesses have been made known to the Children of Israel, which have been reminded in many Surahs (Chapters). Purpose of reminding these favors again and again to them; is that; it should be clear upon them well that “denying from the belief in Muhammad, the Messenger of God (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) is just like turning face from the Commands of Allah Almighty, Who has bestowed them always.

It is commanded: To facilitate them, We divided them in twelve big tribes and the children of twelve grandfathers became twelve great nations separately. Once, when they were thirsty in the jungle, We commanded to Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him): Smite with thy staff the rock before thee. As soon as He (peace be upon Him) smote, therefrom twelve springs appeared and gushed forth. Therefore, every tribe from them took possession of one spring separately.
