them into twelve tribes, nations. And We inspired Moses ,when his people
asked him for water, saying: Smite with thy staff the rock! And there gushed
forth therefrom twelve springs, so that each tribe knew their drinking-place.

Commentary
Qatta’-Naa – (We divided), it is a past tense, which has
been derived from the word taqtii-‘un, its origin is qata-‘a.
Qata-‘a means “to cut”. Taqtii-‘un means “to divide
after cutting”.
‘asbaatin – this word is plural of sabat. We
have discussed about this word in the last Section of previous Part – 1; ‘Alif
– Laaam – Miiim. Here it aims – the grand children of one grandfather.
Surname of Prophet Jacob (peace be upon Him) was Israel. He (peace be upon Him)
had twelve sons. Their children were called ‘asbaat; and they
became twelve tribes, which are famous as “The Children of Israel”.
‘Imbaja-sat – (gushed forth), it is also past tense,
origin of which is ‘ambajaas, and which has been derived from the
word bajasa – it means “appearance”. Actual meaning of ‘Ambajaas is
“To ooze, to percolate”. In such situation, the word ‘anfajarat has
been used in Surah Baqarah (Part – 2), which means “to flow
gently from pores. By mixing both words, it would be aimed “at first the water
began to ooze, then, after a while, it began to flow”.
In this verse, the same
kindnesses have been made known to the Children of Israel, which have been
reminded in many Surahs (Chapters). Purpose of reminding these
favors again and again to them; is that; it should be clear upon them well that
“denying from the belief in Muhammad, the Messenger of God (grace, glory,
blessings and peace be upon Him) is just like turning face from the Commands of
Allah Almighty, Who has bestowed them always.
It is commanded: To facilitate
them, We divided them in twelve big tribes and the children of twelve
grandfathers became twelve great nations separately. Once, when they were
thirsty in the jungle, We commanded to Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him): Smite
with thy staff the rock before thee. As soon as He (peace be upon Him) smote,
therefrom twelve springs appeared and gushed forth. Therefore, every tribe from
them took possession of one spring separately.
