Commentary
Jabbaariina – (a
giant people), it is plural of jabbaar, which is from jabar. Jabar means
‘use of power’ and Jabbaar means
Powerful.
It was discussed in the
previous lesson that twelve commanders from the Children of Israel were sent by
Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) to know correctly the circumstances
of Syria. After their return, ten of them terrified the Children of Israel
by telling them that the people of Syria looked as powerful as the
demons. Therefore, when Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) said to His people,
“Enter in the city like braves and conquer it, because Allah Almighty
has already established it for you. Take it in your possession”. Then they
denied very clearly.
The Children of Israel said, “O
Moses (peace be upon Him): The people dwell therein are very powerful and look
as beings
of human form but of extraordinary statures like demons. We will not go in till
they go forth from thence. However, when they go forth from thence, then we
will enter with great pleasure”. Their reply is telling clearly that those
persons, who had viewed those people (Syrians), they had praised well about the
city, but frightened the Children of Israel, whereas Moses (peace be upon Him)
had forbidden them to tell about the people. Nevertheless, two such persons out
of them even were, who acted upon the instruction of Prophet Moses (peace be
upon Him) and praised about the city before them. At that time, those two
persons encouraged the Children of Israel, after hearing their reply.
Allah Almighty
has praised those two persons in the verse and appointed them as pious men
only, and said, “Unto them Allah had been
gracious that they kept their footing on their treaty, which they promised with
Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him)”. At that time those two commanders said, “O
Children of Israel! Enter in the city by the gate unhesitatingly, fight against
them and do not fear”.
