Commentary

Hudnaaa – (we have turned), it is past tense, origin of which is Hawd. Hawd means “to turn easily unto any matter or thing. Another word Hawaadatun has been derived from it, which is used commonly in Arabic language, and which means “friendship, reconciliation and turning unto someone immediately”.

Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) supplicated in His prayer: O my Lord! If You had willed You had destroyed them along with Me (all of us) long before. And none of us had any courage to come here, but You regarded us with Kindness and I presented myself in Your Court with Your permission, with bringing those people along.

Will You destroy all of them now for the reason that some ignorant people from them have questioned for which they had not ability? This calamity is a trial from You. You sent down this mishap upon them and only You are; Who can help them, so that they may come out from this trouble, and they may be enriched with the blessing of Belief.

You can send astray by means of any ill-deed; whom You will, and guide unto the Straight Path; whom You will. Only You are our Protecting Friend, Guardian and Lord. You have complete control over us. Therefore, kindly forgive our mistakes and have mercy on us. You are real and actual Master of us all. Settle for us and give us chance of earning good name, honor and overcoming, and we may attain degree and respect on the Day of Resurrection also.

Supplication of Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) was accepted. Fault of those people was forgiven; they returned to conscious and rose again.
